Partitioning at phase boundaries of complex steels is important for their properties. We present atom probe tomography results across martensite / austenite interfaces in a precipitation-hardened maraging TRIP steel (12.2 Mn, 1.9 Ni, 0.6 Mo, 1.2 Ti, 0.3 Al; at.%). The system reveals compositional changes at the phase boundaries: Mn and Ni are enriched while Ti, Al, Mo, and Fe are depleted. More specific, we observe up to 27 at.% Mn in a 20 nm layer at the phase boundary. This is explained by the large difference in diffusivity between martensite and austenite. The high diffusivity in martensite leads to a Mn-flux towards the retained austenite. The low diffusivity in the austenite does not allow accommodation of this flux. Consequently, the austenite grows with a Mn-composition given by local equilibrium. The interpretation is based on DICTRA and mixed-mode diffusion calculations (using a finite interface mobility).
Ni-Mn-Ga films in the austenite and the martensite structures at room temperature have been obtained using the DC magnetron sputtering technique. Two elaboration processes were studied. A first batch of samples was deposited using a resist sacrificial layer in order to release the film from the substrate before vacuum annealing. This process leads to polycrystalline films with a strong (022) fiber texture. The martensitic phase transformation of such polycrystalline freestanding films has been studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy. A second batch of samples was grown epitaxially …
Tailoring the phase stability and magnetic structure by combining the antiferromagnetic MnNiGe martensite with ferromagnetic MnFeGe austenite, a magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation has been achieved in MnNi1-xFexGe system. The doped Fe enables the isolated structural and magnetic transitions of MnNiGe to coincide at room temperature and also establishes ferromagnetic couplings in six-Mn-centering-one-Fe-atom clusters. The ferromagnetic clusters transit the antiferromagnetic state in martensite to a ferromagnetic state and the alloys are further induced to a stronger ferromagnetic…
Austenite reversion during tempering of a Fe-13.6Cr-0.44C (wt.%) martensite results in an ultrahigh strength ferritic stainless steel with excellent ductility. The austenite reversion mechanism is coupled to the kinetic freezing of carbon during low-temperature partitioning at the interfaces between martensite and retained austenite and to carbon segregation at martensite-martensite grain boundaries. An advantage of austenite reversion is its scalability, i.e., changing tempering time and temperature tailors the desired strength-ductility profiles (e.g. tempering at 400°C for 1 min. produces a…
A three-dimensional phase-field model is proposed for simulating the magnetic martensitic phase transformation. The model considers a paramagnetic cubic austenite to ferromagnetic tetragonal martensite transition, as it occurs in magnetic Heusler alloys like Ni2 MnGa, and is based on a Landau 2-3-4 polynomial with temperature dependent coefficients. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition is recaptured by interpolating the micromagnetic energy as a function of the order parameter for the ferroelastic domains. The model is numerically implemented in real space by finite element (FE) method. F…
Neutron diffraction measurements, performed in presence of an external magnetic field, have been used to show structural evidence for the kinetic arrest of the first-order phase transition from the high temperature austenite phase to the low temperature martensite phase in the magnetic shape memory alloy Ni37Co11Mn42.5Sn9.5 and the formation of a glass-like arrested state (GLAS). The CHUF (cooling and heating under unequal fields) protocol has been used to establish phase coexistence of metastable and equilibrium states of GLAS in the neutron diffraction patterns. We also explore the field-tem…
Besides permitting an accurate determination of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition temperature and the characteristic temperatures for the beginning and end of the growth of martensite (austenite) phase at the expense of austenite (martensite) phase while cooling (heating), the results of an extensive ac susceptibility, sound velocity and internal friction investigation of the thermoelastic martensitic transformation in melt-quenched (site-disordered) Ni55Fe20Al25 alloy provide a clear experimental evidence for the following. Irreversible thermoelastic changes (thermal hysteres…
A formerly developed method aimed at determining the constituents of a merged X-ray pattern doublet was applied to estimate the fact that low-carbon martensite with high concentration of strong carbide-forming elements possesses abnormally small tetragonality(c/a < 1). The article treats the nature of carbide-forming and non-carbide-forming steel components influence on the tetragonality of martensite.
This work integrates in-situ neutron diffraction and crystal plasticity finite element modeling to study the kinematic stability of retained austenite in high carbon bearing steels. The presence of a kinematically metastable retained austenite in bearing steels can significantly affect the macro-mechanical and micro-mechanical material response. Mechanical characterization of metastable austenite is a critical component in accurately capturing the micro-mechanical behavior under typical application loads. Traditional mechanical characterization techniques are unable to discretely quantify the …
The nucleation of bcc austenite in a single crystal of a mechanically stabilized 2H-martensite of Cu-Al-Ni shape-memory alloy is studied. The nucleation process is induced by localized heating and observed by optical microscopy. It is observed that nucleation occurs after a time delay and that the nucleation points are always located at one of the corners of the sample (a rectangular bar in the austenite), regardless of where the localized heating is applied. Using a simplified nonlinear elasticity model, we propose an explanation for the location of the nucleation points, by showing that the …
This work explains the occurrence of transformation-induced plasticity via stress-assisted martensite, when designing ultrafine-grained duplex steels. It is found that, when the austenite is reduced to a fine scale of about 300 nm, the initial deformation-induced microstructure can be dominated by parallel lamellae of epsilon martensite or mechanical twinning, which cannot efficiently provide nucleation sites for strain-induced martensite. Hence, alpha martensite nucleation occurs independently by a stress-assisted process that enhances transformation-induced plasticity in ultrafine-grained au…
We have studied the phase volume fraction related magnetoresistance (MR) across the first order martensite transformation (MT) of Ni44Cu2Mn43In11 alloy. Within the metastability of MT, an isothermal application of magnetic field converts the martensite into austenite. The field induced austenite phase fraction (fIA) at any temperature depends on the availability and instability of martensite phase fraction (fM ) at that temperature. This fIA is found to contribute most significantly to the observed giant MR while the contribution from pure martensite and austenite phase fraction is negligible.…
The forward transformation from face centered cubic austenite to body centered cubic/tetragonal martensite in ferrous alloys can significantly in- fluence the microstructure and mechanical properties of the material. Inferring possible high temperature crystal orientations from observations of ambient temperature transformation microstructures is hindered by parent austenite- twin interactions and scatter in the orientation relationship. This creates a major limitation for studying variant selection phenomena and characteriz- ing microstructural response to high temperature thermomechanical pr…
This work presents a detailed experimental-numerical analysis of a low-carbon dual-phase steel microstructure, revealing evidence of significant anisotropic plastic deformation in lath martensite. A careful determination of the habit plane orientations in the present martensitic variants demonstrates that the observed traces of plastic slip coincide with the directions of the corresponding habit planes. To study the local lath martensite plastic activity, a dedicated substructure-enriched crystal plasticity based model is exploited. Compared with conventional bcc crystal plasticity, the model …
A compositionally-graded steel composed of martensite with 0.4%C on the centre and bainite with 0.1%C on the surface was manufactured by partial decarburization. It is reported that the as quenched material can be cold rolled up to an equivalent strain of 1.5 without cracks. The mechanical properties of the cold-rolled material exhibits up to 2.5 GPa strength and ductility. A simple mechanical model is developed to predict the stress state after rolling of the graded structure explaining the good ductility of the present high strength materials.
Stabilization of Martensite and Austenite Phases and Realization of Two-way Martensitic Transition in Co-Ni-Ga Ferromagnetic Shape Memory Alloy Nanoparticles
Understanding the mechanism of martensitic transformation is of great importance in developing advanced high strength steels, especially TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels. The TRIP effect leads to enhanced work-hardening rate, postponed onset of necking and excellent formability. In-situ transmission electron microscopy has been performed to systematically investigate the dynamic interactions between dislocations and alpha martensite at microscale. Local stress concentrations, e.g. from notches or dislocation pile-ups, render free edges and grain boundaries favorable nucleation s…
Temperature and misorientation-dependent austenite nucleation at ferrite grain boundaries in a medium manganese steel: role of misorientation-dependent grain boundary segregation
The induction hardening behavior of a new, hot-rolled 0.4 wt.% carbon steel with the two different starting microstructures of upper and lower bainite has been simulated using a Gleeble 3800. The effect of heating rate in the range 1 - 500 °C/s on austenite grain size distribution has been rationalized. Dilatometry together with Scanning Electron Microscopy combined with Electron Backscatter Diffraction analyses and thermodynamic simulations provide insight into the austenite formation mechanisms that operate at different heating rates. Two main mechanisms of austenite formation during re-aust…
Transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) behavior was studied in steel with composition Fe-0.07C-2.85Si-15.3Mn-2.4Al-0.017N that exhibited two TRIP mechanisms. The initial microstructure consisted of both ε- and α-martensites with 27% retained austenite. TRIP behavior in the first 5% strain was predominately austenite transforming to ε-martensite (Stage I), but upon saturation of Stage I, the ε-martensite transformed to α-martensite (Stage II). Alloy segregation also affected the TRIP behavior with alloy rich regions producing TRIP just prior to necking. This behavior was explained by first pr…
NiTi is the most used shape-memory alloy, nonetheless, a lack of understanding remains regarding the associated structures and transitions, including their barriers. Using a generalized solid-state nudge elastic band (GSSNEB) method implemented via density-functional theory, we detail the structural transformations in NiTi relevant to shape memory: those between body-centered orthorhombic (BCO) groundstate and a newly identified stable austenite ("glassy" B2-like) structure, including energy barriers (hysteresis) and intermediate structures (observed as a kinetically limited R-phase), and betw…
The locally varying tetragonality in martensite grains of a high-carbon steel (1.2 mass percent C) was resolved by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) with a spatial resolution in the order of 100nm. Compared to spatially integrating X-ray diffraction, which yielded an average tetragonality of c/a=1.05, the EBSD measurements in the scanning electron microscope allowed to image a local variation of the lattice parameter ratio c/a in the range of 1.02 $\leq$ c/a $\leq$ 1.07. The local variation of tetragonality is confirmed by two different EBSD data analysis approaches based on the fitting …
The martensitic start temperature ($M_{\text{s}}$) is a technologically fundamental characteristic of high-temperature shape memory alloys. We have recently shown [Phys. Rev. B 94, 224104 (2016)] that the two key features in describing the composition dependence of $M_\text{s}$ are the $T=0$ K phase stability and the difference in vibrational entropy which, within the Debye model, is directly linked to the elastic properties. Here, we use density functional theory together with special quasi-random structures to study the elastic properties of disordered martensite and austenite Ti-Ta alloys a…
Mechanical properties of steels are significantly enhanced by retained austenite. Particularly, it has been shown that a recently developed heat-treatment technique called Quenching and Partitioning (Q\&P) stabilises austenite effectively. In the present work, the phase-field approach is adopted to simulate the phase transformation and carbon diffusion, which respectively accompanies the quenching and partitioning process of the polycrystalline Fe-C system. By incorporating the chemical driving-force from the CALPHAD database, the elastic phase-field model, which recovers the sharp-interface s…
A novel concept of varying the strain hardening rate of a medium Mn steel with 8 wt\% Mn by varying the duration of the intercritical anneal after hot rolling was explored. It was found that the stability of the austenite phase showed an inverse square root relationship with intercritical annealing duration and that the maximum strain hardening rate showed a linear relationship with austenite stability. The change in austenite stability was attributed to continuous Mn enrichment with increasing intercritical annealling duration. Twinned martensite was also found to be the most likely product o…
Effectiveness of galaxite (Al2O3MnO) and manganese oxide (MnO2) in nucleating acicular ferrite was demonstrated in a steel with composition of Fe-13.92Mn-4.53Al-1.28Si-0.11C. The hot rolled and quenched steel had a duplex microstructure of delta-ferrite and partially transformed austenite. Thermal treatments were used to manipulate the concentration and type of oxides and the ferrite plate density was found to correlate with inclusions of low misfit. Both bainitic and acicular ferrite were observed and the prior austenite had a grain diameter of 16.5 micrometers. Upon tensile testing the retai…
We carried out magneto-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) and magnetization measurements on a single crystal of Ni2.00Mn1.16Ga0.84 in a longitudinal geometry. While there had been reports of polar geometry measurements so far, we show that - against earlier predictions - surface magnetic states of the martensite and the austenite can be also probed efficiently via longitudinal MOKE. A single variant magnetic state, which occurs at room temperature, is characterized by ferromagnetic hysteresis loops similar to standard ferromagnets. Temperature dependencies of Kerr rotation were found to be linearly pr…
7M orthorhombic modulated structure in the martensite phase of Ni1.8Pt0.2MnGa is reported by powder neutron diffraction study, which indicates that it is likely to exhibit magnetic field induced strain. The change in the unit cell volume is less than 0.5% between the austenite and martensite phases, as expected for a volume conserving martensite transformation. The magnetic structure analysis shows that the magnetic moment in the martensite phase is higher compared to Ni2MnGa, which is in good agreement with magnetization measurement.
Medium-Mn steels exhibit excellent mechanical properties and lower production costs compared to high-Mn steels, which makes them a potential material for future application in the automotive industry. Intercritical annealing (ICA) after cold rolling allows to control the stacking fault energy (SFE) of austenite, the fraction of ferrite and reverted austenite, and the element partitioning (especially Mn). Although Mn deteriorates the corrosion behavior of Fe-Mn-Al alloys, the influence of austenite fraction and element partitioning of Mn on the electrochemical corrosion behavior has not been in…
Phase-field simulations of the martensitic transformation (MT) in the austenitic matrix, which has already undergone the plastic deformation, are carried out. For this purpose the elasto-plastic phase-field approach of incoherent MT developed in the previous work [Kundin et. al. J. Mech. and Phys. Solids 59 (2011) 2012] is used. The evolution equation for the dislocation density field is extended by taking into account the thermal and athermal annihilation of the dislocations in the austenitic matrix and the athermal annihilation at the transformation front. It is shown that the plastic deform…
A novel medium Mn steel of composition Fe-12Mn-4.8Al-2Si-0.32C-0.3V was manufactured with 1.09 GPa yield strength, 1.26 GPa tensile strength and 54% elongation. The thermomechanical process route was designed to be industrially translatable and consists of hot and then warm rolling before a 30 min intercritical anneal. The resulting microstructure comprised of coarse elongated austenite grains in the rolling direction surrounded by necklace layers of fine austenite and ferrite grains. The tensile behaviour was investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and the evolution of microstructure stud…
Hydrogen embrittlement mechanisms of steels have been studied for several decades. Understanding hydrogen diffusion behavior in steels is crucial towards both developing predictive models for hydrogen embrittlement and identifying mitigation strategies. However, because hydrogen has a low atomic mass, it is extremely challenging to detect by most analytical methods. In recent years, cryogenic-transfer atom probe tomography (APT) of electrochemically-deuterium-charged steels has provided invaluable qualitative analysis of nanoscale deuterium traps such as carbides, dislocations, grain boundarie…
The article focuses on the effect of alloying and microstructure on formability of advanced high strength steels (AHSSs) processed via quenching and partitioning (Q&P). Three different Q&P steels with different combination of alloying elements and volume fraction of retained austenite are subjected to uniaxial tensile and Nakajima testing. Tensile mechanical properties are determined, and the forming limit diagrams (FLDs) are plotted. Microstructure of the tested samples is analyzed, and dramatic reduction of retained austenite fraction is detected. It is demonstrated that all steels are able …
Modulated phases occur in numerous functional materials like giant ferroelectrics and magnetic shape memory alloys. To understand the origin of these phases, we review and generalize the concept of adaptive martensite. As a starting point, we investigate the coexistence of austenite, adaptive 14M phase and tetragonal martensite in Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape memory alloy epitaxial films. The modulated martensite can be constructed from nanotwinned variants of a tetragonal martensite phase. By combining the concept of adaptive martensite with branching of twin variants, we can explain key features …
The irreversibility of the martensite transition in magnetic shape memory alloys (MSMAs) with respect to external magnetic field is one of the biggest challenges that limits their application as giant caloric materials. This transition is a magneto-structural transition that is accompanied with a steep drop in magnetization (i.e., 'delta M') around the martensite start temperature (Ms) due to the lower magnetization of the martensite phase. In this communication, we show that 'delta M' around Ms in Mn rich Ni-Mn based MSMAs gets suppressed by two orders of magnitude in crushed powders due to t…
An effective scheme of isostructural alloying was applied to establish a Curie-temperature window in isostructural MnNiGe-CoNiGe system. With the simultaneous accomplishment of decreasing structural-transition temperature and converting antiferromagnetic martensite to ferromagnetic state, a 200 K Curie-temperature window was established between Curie temperatures of austenite and martensite phases. In the window, a first-order magnetostructural transition between paramagnetic austenite and ferromagnetic martensite occurs with a sharp jump in magnetization, showing a magnetic entropy change as …
The formation of modified Z-phase in a 12Cr1MoV (German grade: X20) tempered martensite ferritic (TMF) steel subjected to interrupted long-term creep-testing at 550$^{\circ}$C and 120 MPa was investigated. Quantitative volumetric measurements collected from thin-foil and extraction replica samples showed that modified Z-phase precipitated in both the uniformly-elongated gauge ($f_v$: 0.23 $\pm$ 0.02 %) and thread regions ($f_v$: 0.06 $\pm$ 0.01 %) of the sample that ruptured after 139 kh. The formation of modified Z-phase was accompanied by a progressive dissolution of MX precipitates, which d…
The onset of plasticity in quenched martensitic microstructures is characterized by a low initial yield stress followed by an extremely strong initial hardening response, and then a sudden hardening saturation. Literature attributes this behavior to residual stresses and dislocations inherited from the martensitic transformation, or to microstructural heterogeneities causing strength differences among the grains. Here, we argue that orientation-dependent yielding of lath martensite due to inter-lath sliding, which induces a substructure boundary sliding mechanism, may also contribute significa…
In this paper, we present temperature and field dependent neutron diffraction (ND) study to unravel the structural and the magnetic properties in Ni50Mn38Sb12 Heusler system. This alloy shows martensitic transition from high temperature austenite cubic phase to low temperature martensite orthorhombic phase on cooling. At 3 K, the lattice parameters and magnetic moments are found to be almost insensitive to field. Just below the martensitic transition temperature, the martensite phase fraction is found to be 85%. Upon applying the field, the austenite phase becomes dominant, and the field induc…
A systematic study of magnetic properties of Ni2+xMn1-xGa (0 \le x \le 0.19) Heusler alloys undergoing structural martensite-austenite transformations while in ferromagnetic state has been performed. From measurements of spontaneous magnetization, Ms(T), jumps ΔM at structural phase transitions were determined. Virtual Curie temperatures of the martensite were estimated from the comparison of magnetization in martensitic and austenitic phases. Both saturation magnetic moments in ferromagnetic state and effective magnetic moments in paramagnetic state of Mn and Ni atoms were estimated and the i…
The crystal structure and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. By alloying the Fe-containing isostructure compounds into MnCoGe, a magnetostructural transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with large magnetization difference can be realized in a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of the austenite and martensite, resulting in magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformations and large magnetic-entropy changes. A structural and magnetic phase diagram of Fe-…
Materials which can undergo extremely fast displacive transformations as well as very slow diffusive transformations are studied using a Ginzburg-Landau framework to understand the physics behind microstructure formation and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams. This simple model captures the essential features of alloys such as steels and predicts the formation of mixed microstructures by an interplay between diffusive and displacive mechanisms. The intrinsic volume changes associated with the transformations stabilize mixed microstructures such as martensite-retained austenite (res…
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…

Numerous full-field numerical methods exist concerning the digital description of polycrystalline materials and the modeling of their evolution during thermomechanical treatments. However, these strategies are globally dedicated to the modeling of recrystallization and grain growth for single-phase materials, or to the modeling of phase transformations without considering recrystallization and related phenomena. A generalized numerical framework capable of making predictions in a multi-phase polycrystalline context while respecting the concomitance of the different microstructural mechanisms i…
Shape memory alloys inherit their macroscopic properties from their mesoscale microstructure originated from the martensitic phase transformation. In a cubic to orthorhombic transition, a single variant of marten- site can have a compatible (exact) interface with the austenite for some special lattice parameters in contrast to conventional austenite/twinned martensite interface with a transition layer. Experimentally, the phase compat- ibility results in a dramatic drop in thermal hysteresis and gives rise to very stable functional properties over cycling. Here, we investigate the microstructu…
It is shown that a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of martensite and austenite phases around the room temperature can be obtained by a vacancy-tuning strategy in Mn-poor Mn1-xCoGe alloys (0 <= x <= 0.050). Based on this, a martensitic transformation from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with a large magnetization difference can be realized in this window. This gives rise to a magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation and a large magnetocaloric effect in the Mn1-xCoGe system. The decrease of the transformation temperature and of the thermal hysteresis…
A model of pearlite colony formation in carbon steels with ab-initio parameterization is proposed. The model describes the process of decomposition of austenite and cementite formation through a metastable intermediate structure by taking into account the increase of the magnetic order under the cooling. Autocatalytic mechanism of pearlite colony formation and the conditions for its implementation have been analyzed. We demonstrate that pearlite with lamellar structure is formed by autocatalytic mechanism when thermodynamic equilibrium between the initial phase (austenite) and the products of …
The large magnetocaloric effect in Heusler alloys showing martensite phase transformation puts them forward as efficient materials for magnetic refrigeration. However, irreversibility of the magnetocaloric cooling cycle is a major challenge for real applications. This irreversibility is directly linked to the thermal hysteresis at the first-order martensite phase transition. Therefore, minimizing the hysteresis is essential in order to achieve reversibility. Here we show a large reduction in the thermal hysteresis at the martensite transition in the Ni$_{2}$Mn$_{1.4}$In$_{0.6}$ and Ni$_{1.8}$C…
In the present work, the aspects of magnetic and structural properties of Ni-Mn-Ga alloys are described in the framework of fist-principles approach and mapped into ternary composition diagrams. The stable atomic arrangement and magnetic alignment for compositions with cubic austenite and tetragonal martensite structures across phase diagrams are predicted. It is shown that Ni- and Ga-rich compositions possess the regular Heusler structure in contrast to Mn-rich compositions with inverse Heusler structure as favorable one. Compositions with unstable austenite structure are concentrated in the …
Entropy barriers and ageing states appear in martensitic structural-transition models, slowly re-equilibrating after temperature quenches, under Monte Carlo dynamics. Concepts from protein folding and ageing harmonic oscillators turn out to be useful in understanding these nonequilibrium evolutions. We show how the athermal, non-activated delay time for seeded parent-phase austenite to convert to product-phase martensite, arises from an identified entropy barrier in Fourier space. In an ageing state of low Monte Carlo acceptances, the strain structure factor makes constant-energy searches for …
