It is shown that a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of martensite and austenite phases around the room temperature can be obtained by a vacancy-tuning strategy in Mn-poor Mn1-xCoGe alloys (0 <= x <= 0.050). Based on this, a martensitic transformation from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with a large magnetization difference can be realized in this window. This gives rise to a magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation and a large magnetocaloric effect in the Mn1-xCoGe system. The decrease of the transformation temperature and of the thermal hysteresis of the transformation, as well as the stable Curie temperatures of martensite and austenite, are discussed on the basis of the Mn-poor Co-vacancy structure and the corresponding valence-electron concentration.
A brief qualitative mapping is given between austenite, tweed and twinned phases of martensite alloys and corresponding paramagnetic, spin glass and periodic phases in spin glass alloys.
Tailoring the phase stability and magnetic structure by combining the antiferromagnetic MnNiGe martensite with ferromagnetic MnFeGe austenite, a magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformation has been achieved in MnNi1-xFexGe system. The doped Fe enables the isolated structural and magnetic transitions of MnNiGe to coincide at room temperature and also establishes ferromagnetic couplings in six-Mn-centering-one-Fe-atom clusters. The ferromagnetic clusters transit the antiferromagnetic state in martensite to a ferromagnetic state and the alloys are further induced to a stronger ferromagnetic…
A coupling of the first-order paramagnetic-to-induced-ferromagnetic martensitic and the second-order antiferromagnetic-to-ferromagnetic metamagnetic transitions was found in MnNi0.8Fe0.2Ge alloy. Based on the coupling, a magneto-volume effect driven by the martensitic transition and a table-like magnetocaloric effect generated by the successive magnetic phase transitions arise collectively. By using the magneto-volume effect, the internal pressure stress in the volume-expansion martensitic transition was determined at 350 MPa. The magnetocaloric effect, with a wide working temperature range of…
A three-dimensional phase-field model is proposed for simulating the magnetic martensitic phase transformation. The model considers a paramagnetic cubic austenite to ferromagnetic tetragonal martensite transition, as it occurs in magnetic Heusler alloys like Ni2 MnGa, and is based on a Landau 2-3-4 polynomial with temperature dependent coefficients. The paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition is recaptured by interpolating the micromagnetic energy as a function of the order parameter for the ferroelastic domains. The model is numerically implemented in real space by finite element (FE) method. F…
The crystal structure and magnetoresponsive properties of Fe-doped MnCoGe alloys have been investigated using x-ray diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. By alloying the Fe-containing isostructure compounds into MnCoGe, a magnetostructural transition from paramagnetic austenite to ferromagnetic martensite with large magnetization difference can be realized in a temperature window between the Curie temperatures of the austenite and martensite, resulting in magnetic-field-induced martensitic transformations and large magnetic-entropy changes. A structural and magnetic phase diagram of Fe-…
The different contributions to the entropy change linked to the austenite-martensitic transition in a Ni-Mn-Sn metamagnetic shape memory alloy have been determined by combining different experimental techniques. The vibrational contribution has been inferred from the vibrational density of states of both the martensitic and austenite phases. This has been accomplished by combining time-of-flight neutron scattering measurements and ab-initio calculations. Further, the electronic part of the entropy change has also been calculated. Since the martensitic transformation takes place between two par…
Besides permitting an accurate determination of the ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition temperature and the characteristic temperatures for the beginning and end of the growth of martensite (austenite) phase at the expense of austenite (martensite) phase while cooling (heating), the results of an extensive ac susceptibility, sound velocity and internal friction investigation of the thermoelastic martensitic transformation in melt-quenched (site-disordered) Ni55Fe20Al25 alloy provide a clear experimental evidence for the following. Irreversible thermoelastic changes (thermal hysteres…
The crystal structures, martensitic structural transitions and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. In high-temperature paramagnetic state, the alloys undergo a martensitic structural transitions from the Ni2In-type hexagonal parent phase to the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic martensite. Both the martensitic transition temperature (TM) and Curie temperatures of martensite (T_C^M) decrease with increasing Fe content. The introduced Fe atoms establish ferromagnetic …
The non-stoichiometric Heusler alloy Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{36}$In$_{14}$ undergoes a martensitic phase transformation in the vicinity of 345 K, with the high temperature austenite phase exhibiting paramagnetic rather than ferromagnetic behavior, as shown in similar alloys with lower-temperature transformations. Suitably prepared samples are shown to exhibit a sharp transformation, a relatively small thermal hysteresis, and a large field-induced entropy change. We analyzed the magnetocaloric behavior both through magnetization and direct field-dependent calorimetry measurements. For measurements passin…
A systematic study of magnetic properties of Ni2+xMn1-xGa (0 \le x \le 0.19) Heusler alloys undergoing structural martensite-austenite transformations while in ferromagnetic state has been performed. From measurements of spontaneous magnetization, Ms(T), jumps ΔM at structural phase transitions were determined. Virtual Curie temperatures of the martensite were estimated from the comparison of magnetization in martensitic and austenitic phases. Both saturation magnetic moments in ferromagnetic state and effective magnetic moments in paramagnetic state of Mn and Ni atoms were estimated and the i…
We report a steplike lattice transformation of single crystalline (La$_{0.4}$Pr$_{0.6}$)$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_{2}$O$_{7}$bilayered manganite accompanied by both magnetization and magnetoresistive jumps, and examine the ultrasharp nature of the field-induced first-order transition from a paramagnetic insulator to a ferromagnetic metal phase accompanied by a huge decrease in resistance. Our findings support that the abrupt magnetostriction is closely related to an orbital frustration existing in the inhomogeneous paramagnetic insulating phase rather than a martensitic scenario between competing …
We report on measurements of the adiabatic temperature change in the inverse magnetocaloric Ni$_{50}$Mn$_{34}$In$_{16}$ alloy. It is shown that this alloy heats up with the application of a magnetic field around the Curie point due to the conventional magnetocaloric effect. In contrast, the inverse magnetocaloric effect associated with the martensitic transition results in the unusual decrease of temperature by adiabatic magnetization. We also provide magnetization and specific heat data which enable to compare the measured temperature changes to the values indirectly computed from thermodynam…
We have synthesized a nominal composition of Ni50Mn30Sn20 alloy using arc melting technique. Rietveld refinement confirms the austenite L21 structure in Fm-3m space group. Electrical resistivity has been found to clearly exhibiting two different phenomena viz. a magnetic transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic and a structural transition from austenite to martensitic phase. Thermo-magnetization measurements M(T) confirms ferromagnetic transition temperature TC at 222 K and martensitic transition starting at 127 K(MS). Magnetization measurement M(H) at 10 K confirms the ferromagnetic stat…
Ferromagnetic shape memory alloys Ni$_{2+x}$Mn$_{1-x}$Ga were studied in the range of compositions $0.16 \le x \le 0.36$. Experimental phase diagram, constructed from differential scanning calorimetry, transport and magnetic measurements, exhibits distinctive feature in a compositional interval $0.18 \le x \le 0.27$, where martensitic and magnetic transitions merge in a first-order magnetostructural phase transition ferromagnetic martensite $\leftrightarrow$ paramagnetic austenite. Observed in this interval of compositions a non-monotonous behavior of the magnetostructural phase transition tem…

Energetics of the fcc ($γ$) - bcc ($α$) lattice transformation by the Bain tetragonal deformation is calculated for both magnetically ordered and paramagnetic (disordered local moment) states of iron. The first-principle computational results manifest a relevance of the magnetic order in a scenario of the $γ$ - $α$ transition and reveal a special role of the Curie temperature of $α$-Fe, $T_C$, where a character of the transformation is changed. At a cooling down to the temperatures $T < T_C$ one can expect that the transformation is developed as a lattice instability whereas for $T > T_C$ it f…
Present work reports on the observation of multiple magnetic transitions in a Ni-excess ferromagnetic shape memory alloy with nominal composition Ni$_{2.048}$Mn$_{1.312}$In$_{0.64}$. The magnetization data reveal two distinct thermal hystereses associated with two different phase transitions at different temperature regions. The high temperature magnetic hysteresis is due to the martensitic phase transition whereas the low temperature hysteresis occurs around the magnetic anomaly signifying the transition from a paramagnetic-like state to the ferromagetic ground state within the martensite. Cl…
The magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in paramagnetic materials has been widely used for attaining very low temperatures by applying a magnetic field isothermally and removing it adiabatically. The effect can be exploited also for room temperature refrigeration by using recently discovered giant MCE materials. In this letter, we report on an inverse situation in Ni-Mn-Sn alloys, whereby applying a magnetic field adiabatically, rather than removing it, causes the sample to cool. This has been known to occur in some intermetallic compounds, for which a moderate entropy increase can be induced when a f…
