We briefly introduce tweed, which is found above the martensitic transition in a variety of shape-memory, high-T_c, and other materials. Based on our previous mapping of the problem onto a spin-glass model, we conjecture that the two-way shape-memory effect is due to tweed.
A basis for understanding and modelling glassy behaviour in martensitic alloys and relaxor ferroelectrics is discussed from the perspective of spin glasses.

We calculate the cohesive energies of Fe-based glass-forming alloys in the B-Fe-Y-Zr quaternary system. Our {\it ab-initio} calculations fully relax atomic positions and lattice parameters yielding enthalpies of mixing at T=0K. We examine both the known equilibrium and metastable phases as well as a selection of plausible structures drawn from related alloy systems. An archetypical spin-glass metallic alloy, Cu0.83Mn0.17, is studied by means of an ab-initio based approach. First-principles calculations are employed to obtain effective chemical, strain-induced and magnetic exchange interactions, as well as static atomic displacements, and the interactions are subsequently used in thermodynamic simulations. From the first glance, Ni-Zr system is the most natural object to expect the same behavior because nickel and copper are neighbours in the periodic table and have similar physicochemical properties. Prediction of the glass forming ability (GFA) of alloys remains a major challenge. We are not able to predict the composition dependence of the GFA of even binary alloys. To investigate the effect of each element's propensity to form particular crystal structures on glass formation, we focus on binary alloys composed of elements with the same size, but different atomic symmetries using the patchy-particle model. For mixtures with atomic symmetries that promote different crystal structures, the minimum critical cooling rate $R_c$ is only a factor of $5$ lower than that for the pure substances. …
The extraordinary Hall effect coefficients $R_s(T)$ of the canonical spin glass alloys ${\bf Au}Fe 8 at%$ and ${\bf Au}Mn 8 at%$ and of an archetype reentrant system ${\bf Au}Fe 18 at%$ were measured as functions of temperature. The data show a critical cusp-like term superimposed on a smooth background for the spin glasses, and change of sign with temperature for the reentrant. The results can be interpreted consistently by invoking a chiral Hall effect contribution as proposed by Kawamura.
A key property of glass forming alloys, the anomalously small volume difference with respect to the crystal, is shown to arise as a direct consequence of the soft repulsive potentials between metals. We examine the relation between the free volume per particle and the variance of the particle position, equivalent to a local Debye-Waller (DW) factor for a 2D glass-forming alloy using molecular dynamics simulations. We find that the latter quantity exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity despite involving trajectories two orders of magnitude shorter than those typically used to measure such heterogeneities.
