A compositionally-graded steel composed of martensite with 0.4%C on the centre and bainite with 0.1%C on the surface was manufactured by partial decarburization. It is reported that the as quenched material can be cold rolled up to an equivalent strain of 1.5 without cracks. The mechanical properties of the cold-rolled material exhibits up to 2.5 GPa strength and ductility. A simple mechanical model is developed to predict the stress state after rolling of the graded structure explaining the good ductility of the present high strength materials.
A formerly developed method aimed at determining the constituents of a merged X-ray pattern doublet was applied to estimate the fact that low-carbon martensite with high concentration of strong carbide-forming elements possesses abnormally small tetragonality(c/a < 1). The article treats the nature of carbide-forming and non-carbide-forming steel components influence on the tetragonality of martensite.
This work explains the occurrence of transformation-induced plasticity via stress-assisted martensite, when designing ultrafine-grained duplex steels. It is found that, when the austenite is reduced to a fine scale of about 300 nm, the initial deformation-induced microstructure can be dominated by parallel lamellae of epsilon martensite or mechanical twinning, which cannot efficiently provide nucleation sites for strain-induced martensite. Hence, alpha martensite nucleation occurs independently by a stress-assisted process that enhances transformation-induced plasticity in ultrafine-grained au…
This work presents a detailed experimental-numerical analysis of a low-carbon dual-phase steel microstructure, revealing evidence of significant anisotropic plastic deformation in lath martensite. A careful determination of the habit plane orientations in the present martensitic variants demonstrates that the observed traces of plastic slip coincide with the directions of the corresponding habit planes. To study the local lath martensite plastic activity, a dedicated substructure-enriched crystal plasticity based model is exploited. Compared with conventional bcc crystal plasticity, the model …
Partitioning at phase boundaries of complex steels is important for their properties. We present atom probe tomography results across martensite / austenite interfaces in a precipitation-hardened maraging TRIP steel (12.2 Mn, 1.9 Ni, 0.6 Mo, 1.2 Ti, 0.3 Al; at.%). The system reveals compositional changes at the phase boundaries: Mn and Ni are enriched while Ti, Al, Mo, and Fe are depleted. More specific, we observe up to 27 at.% Mn in a 20 nm layer at the phase boundary. This is explained by the large difference in diffusivity between martensite and austenite. The high diffusivity in martensit…
Transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) behavior was studied in steel with composition Fe-0.07C-2.85Si-15.3Mn-2.4Al-0.017N that exhibited two TRIP mechanisms. The initial microstructure consisted of both ε- and α-martensites with 27% retained austenite. TRIP behavior in the first 5% strain was predominately austenite transforming to ε-martensite (Stage I), but upon saturation of Stage I, the ε-martensite transformed to α-martensite (Stage II). Alloy segregation also affected the TRIP behavior with alloy rich regions producing TRIP just prior to necking. This behavior was explained by first pr…
The locally varying tetragonality in martensite grains of a high-carbon steel (1.2 mass percent C) was resolved by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) with a spatial resolution in the order of 100nm. Compared to spatially integrating X-ray diffraction, which yielded an average tetragonality of c/a=1.05, the EBSD measurements in the scanning electron microscope allowed to image a local variation of the lattice parameter ratio c/a in the range of 1.02 $\leq$ c/a $\leq$ 1.07. The local variation of tetragonality is confirmed by two different EBSD data analysis approaches based on the fitting …
Austenite reversion during tempering of a Fe-13.6Cr-0.44C (wt.%) martensite results in an ultrahigh strength ferritic stainless steel with excellent ductility. The austenite reversion mechanism is coupled to the kinetic freezing of carbon during low-temperature partitioning at the interfaces between martensite and retained austenite and to carbon segregation at martensite-martensite grain boundaries. An advantage of austenite reversion is its scalability, i.e., changing tempering time and temperature tailors the desired strength-ductility profiles (e.g. tempering at 400°C for 1 min. produces a…
Understanding the mechanism of martensitic transformation is of great importance in developing advanced high strength steels, especially TRansformation-Induced Plasticity (TRIP) steels. The TRIP effect leads to enhanced work-hardening rate, postponed onset of necking and excellent formability. In-situ transmission electron microscopy has been performed to systematically investigate the dynamic interactions between dislocations and alpha martensite at microscale. Local stress concentrations, e.g. from notches or dislocation pile-ups, render free edges and grain boundaries favorable nucleation s…
In particular types of layer- or lamellar-like microstructures such as pearlite and lath martensite, plastic slip occurs favorably in directions parallel to inter-lamellar boundaries. This may be due to the interplay between morphology and crystallographic orientation or, more generally, due to constraints imposed on the plastic slip due to the lamellar microstructural geometry. This paper proposes a micromechanics based, computationally efficient, scale independent model for particular type of lamellar microstructures containing softer lamellae, which are sufficiently thin to be considered as…
The formation of modified Z-phase in a 12Cr1MoV (German grade: X20) tempered martensite ferritic (TMF) steel subjected to interrupted long-term creep-testing at 550$^{\circ}$C and 120 MPa was investigated. Quantitative volumetric measurements collected from thin-foil and extraction replica samples showed that modified Z-phase precipitated in both the uniformly-elongated gauge ($f_v$: 0.23 $\pm$ 0.02 %) and thread regions ($f_v$: 0.06 $\pm$ 0.01 %) of the sample that ruptured after 139 kh. The formation of modified Z-phase was accompanied by a progressive dissolution of MX precipitates, which d…
The onset of plasticity in quenched martensitic microstructures is characterized by a low initial yield stress followed by an extremely strong initial hardening response, and then a sudden hardening saturation. Literature attributes this behavior to residual stresses and dislocations inherited from the martensitic transformation, or to microstructural heterogeneities causing strength differences among the grains. Here, we argue that orientation-dependent yielding of lath martensite due to inter-lath sliding, which induces a substructure boundary sliding mechanism, may also contribute significa…
Materials which can undergo extremely fast displacive transformations as well as very slow diffusive transformations are studied using a Ginzburg-Landau framework to understand the physics behind microstructure formation and time-temperature-transformation (TTT) diagrams. This simple model captures the essential features of alloys such as steels and predicts the formation of mixed microstructures by an interplay between diffusive and displacive mechanisms. The intrinsic volume changes associated with the transformations stabilize mixed microstructures such as martensite-retained austenite (res…
A metastable austenitic Fe-Cr-Ni steel was processed by selective laser melting with low power, resulting in nearly random crystallographic texture. In-situ tensile loading and neutron diffraction experiments were undertaken and the results indicate high ductility, despite the presence of porosity, and pronounced strain-induced martensitic transformation. A secondary hardening is observed in the mechanical data due to the martensite carrying significant load, upon its formation. The pronounced martensitic transformation is discussed with respect to the initial and the evolving deformation text…
My scientific activities aim at understand and predict the mechanical behaviour of steels, from fundamental mechanisms to macroscopic deformation. This manuscript is dedicated to the TWIP effect (TWinning Induced Plasticity) of high manganese austenitic steels and DP effect (Dual-Phase) in more conventional Ferrite-Martensite steels.
This work integrates in-situ neutron diffraction and crystal plasticity finite element modeling to study the kinematic stability of retained austenite in high carbon bearing steels. The presence of a kinematically metastable retained austenite in bearing steels can significantly affect the macro-mechanical and micro-mechanical material response. Mechanical characterization of metastable austenite is a critical component in accurately capturing the micro-mechanical behavior under typical application loads. Traditional mechanical characterization techniques are unable to discretely quantify the …
Effectiveness of galaxite (Al2O3MnO) and manganese oxide (MnO2) in nucleating acicular ferrite was demonstrated in a steel with composition of Fe-13.92Mn-4.53Al-1.28Si-0.11C. The hot rolled and quenched steel had a duplex microstructure of delta-ferrite and partially transformed austenite. Thermal treatments were used to manipulate the concentration and type of oxides and the ferrite plate density was found to correlate with inclusions of low misfit. Both bainitic and acicular ferrite were observed and the prior austenite had a grain diameter of 16.5 micrometers. Upon tensile testing the retai…
The article focuses on the effect of alloying and microstructure on formability of advanced high strength steels (AHSSs) processed via quenching and partitioning (Q&P). Three different Q&P steels with different combination of alloying elements and volume fraction of retained austenite are subjected to uniaxial tensile and Nakajima testing. Tensile mechanical properties are determined, and the forming limit diagrams (FLDs) are plotted. Microstructure of the tested samples is analyzed, and dramatic reduction of retained austenite fraction is detected. It is demonstrated that all steels are able …
A double shear theory is introduced that predicts the commonly observed {5 5 7} habit planes in low-carbon steels. The novelty of this theory is that no parameter fitting is necessary. Instead, the shearing systems are chosen in analogy to the original (single shear) phenomenological theory of martensite crystallography as those that are macroscopically equivalent to twinning. Out of all the resulting double shear theories, the ones leading to certain {h h k} habit planes naturally arise as those having small shape strain magnitude and satisfying a condition of maximal compatibility, thus maki…
This work focuses on the effect of soaking time on the microstructure during ultrafast heat treatment of a 50% cold rolled low carbon steel with initial ferritic-pearlitic microstructure. Dilatometry analysis was used to estimate the effect of heating rate on the phase transformation temperatures and to select an appropriate inter-critical temperature for final heat treatments. A thorough qualitative and quantitative microstructural characterization of the heat treated samples is performed using a wide range of characterization techniques. A complex multiphase, hierarchical microstructure cons…
Effect of ECAP and heat treatment on mechanical properties, stress relaxation behavior and corrosion resistance of a 321-type austenitic steel with increased delta-ferrite content
In this work, we investigate the sensitivity of the microstructure and mechanical properties of an ultrafast heat treated low carbon-steel to the peak temperature. In all studied cases, the steel was heated within the intercritical temperature range (i.e. between the AC1 and AC3 temperatures). Both the peak temperature and soaking time were varied, and their effect on the size, the fraction of individual microstructural constituents and their tensile mechanical response were investigated. It is shown that the increasing peak temperature and soaking time promote austenite formation and recrysta…
Exploiting Landau's theory of phase transformations, defining an original order parameter and using the phenomenological transformation temperatures, it is reported that it is possible to describe in a global approach the conditions for the formation of each phase (ferrite, bainite, martensite) from austenite during cooling in steel. It allowed to propose a new rigorous classification of the different thermodynamic conditions controlling each phase tranformation. In a second step, the approach predicts naturally the effect of cooling rate on the bainite start temperature. Finally perspectives …
This study presents experimental and computational analyses of the phase composition and mechanical behavior of a functionally graded material (FGM) grading from 100 vol% 304L stainless steel (SS304L) to 100 vol% Ni-20Cr (NiCr) in 10 vol% increments. The mechanical behavior of the FGM was evaluated by extracting tensile specimens from SS304L-rich and NiCr-rich regions of the FGM, with the former behaving in a ductile manner and the latter being relatively brittle. The brittle response of the NiCr-rich sample was explained by the presence of the eutectic FCC+BCC phase in this sample, as identif…
For the first time, cyclic re-austenitization is carried out for additively manufactured high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels in order to refine the microstructure by reducing the prior austenite grain (PAG) size. In this work, HSLA-100 steels processed using laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) technique are subjected to several cycles of re-austenitization using quenching dilatometry. Microstructure characterization for every cycle revealed the presence of bainite, martensite and martensite/austenite (M/A) islands. From the analysis of the dilatometry curves and extensive microstructure character…
A medium Mn steel of composition Fe-4.8Mn-2.8Al-1.5Si-0.51C (wt.\%) was processed to obtain two different microstructures representing two different approaches in the hot rolling mill, resulting in equiaxed vs. a mixed equiaxed and lamellar microstructures. Both were found to exhibit a simultaneous TWIP$+$TRIP plasticity enhancing mechanism where deformation twins and $α'$-martensite formed independently of twinning with strain. Interrupted tensile tests were conducted in order to investigate the differences in deformation structures between the two microstructures. A constitutive model was us…
A novel medium manganese steel named Novalloy with composition Fe-8.3Mn-3.8Al-1.8Si-0.5C-0.06V-0.05Sn was developed and thermomechanically processed through hot rolling and intercritical annealing. The steel possessed a yield strength of 1 GPa, tensile strength of 1.13 GPa and ductility of 41\%. In order to study the effect of cold rolling after intercritical annealing on subsequent tensile properties, the steel was further cold rolled up to 20\% reduction. After cold rolling, it was observed that the strain hardening rate increased continuously with increasing cold rolling reduction but witho…
A novel medium Mn steel of composition Fe-12Mn-4.8Al-2Si-0.32C-0.3V was manufactured with 1.09 GPa yield strength, 1.26 GPa tensile strength and 54% elongation. The thermomechanical process route was designed to be industrially translatable and consists of hot and then warm rolling before a 30 min intercritical anneal. The resulting microstructure comprised of coarse elongated austenite grains in the rolling direction surrounded by necklace layers of fine austenite and ferrite grains. The tensile behaviour was investigated by in-situ neutron diffraction and the evolution of microstructure stud…
In this study, a post-heat treatment design for additively manufactured copper-bearing high-strength low-alloy (HSLA)-100 steel is performed by understanding the process-structure-property relationships. Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is designed to reduce the porosity from 3% to less than 1% for the HSLA-100 steel processed by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). Quenching dilatometry is employed to design the HIP parameters with the optimized cooling rate for the maximum amount of martensite transformed after HIP. Afterward, a post-heat treatment step with cyclic re-austenitization is introduced fo…
The effect of finish rolling temperature (FRT) on the austenite- () to-bainite () phase transformation is quantitatively investigated in high-strength C-Mn steels. In particular, the present study aims to clarify the respective contributions of the conditioning during the hot rolling and the variant selection (VS) during the phase transformation to the inherited texture. To this end, an alternative crystallographic reconstruction procedure, which can be directly applied to experimental electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) mappings, is developed by combining the best features of the existing…

Ductile damage in sheet steels is caused by voids. It is crucial for product design to predict the distribution of voids in bent components. Since the void volume fraction is a state variable in the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model, it is applied to predict the evolution of voids in bending. Material parameters are identified based on force-displacement curves of a dual phase steel and also through statistical microstructural information obtained from panoramic scanning-electron microscopy images. The void volume fraction and particular void populations of GTN-model are determined with a…
A 10 wt.% nickel-steel has been developed for high pressures and low-temperature applications, due to its high strength, excellent toughness, and low ductile-to-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). Under dynamic loading conditions this steel is, however, prone to shear localization that manifests as adiabatic shear bands (ASBs). The temperature increases and thermoplastic microstructural evolution in the ASB are studied in detail, from the macroscopic length scale to the atomic-scale employing correlative electron-backscatter diffraction (EBSD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and at…
The High Nitrogen Martensitic Stainless Steel (HNMS) was subjected to three different austenitizing cycles of 1050$^\circ$C, 1075$^\circ$C and 1100$^\circ$C followed by subzero treatment at -70$^\circ$C. The fraction of retained austenite has been reduced after sub-zero treatment as revealed by microstructural evolution. The material was subsequently tempered at different temperatures ranging from 180$^\circ$C to 650$^\circ$C and the change in micro-structure, hardness, tensile strength and toughness were investigated after each heat treatment cycle. Optical microscopy, electron microscopy wit…
Steel sheets are manufactured from slabs produced in continuous casting, which inevitably results in a porous initial microstructure. These pores are nuclei for ductile damage and need to be closed during rolling in regard of the strict performance requirements of todays advanced high strength steels. Due to the beneficial shape factor of the roll gap, recrystallization and high diffusion rates pore closure and elimination occurs primarily during hot rolling. In this paper, relevant influencing factors on pore closure are investigated based on representative volume elements (RVE). First, the l…

During the strip rolling process, a considerable amount of the forces of the material pressure cause elastic deformation on the work-roll, i.e., the deflection process. The uncontrollable amount of the work-roll deflection leads to the high deviations in the permissible thickness of the plate along its width. In the context of the Austenitic Stainless Steels (ASS), due to the instability of the Austenite phase in a cold temperature, cold deformation leads to the production of Strain-Induced Martensite (SIM), which improves the mechanical properties. It leads to the hardening of the ASS 316L du…
Metastable alloys with transformation/twinning-induced plasticity (TRIP/TWIP) can overcome the strength-ductility trade-off in structural materials. Originated from the development of traditional alloys, the intrinsic stacking fault energy (ISFE) has been relied to tailor TRIP/TWIP in high-entropy alloys (HEA), but with limited quantitative success. Herein, we demonstrate a new strategy for designing metastable HEAs and validate its effectiveness by discovering seven new alloys with experimentally observed metastability for TRIP/TWIP. We propose unstable fault energies as the more effective de…
