Superconducting devices, which rely on modulating a complex superconducting order parameter in a Josephson junction, have been developed for low power logic operations, high-frequency oscillators, and exquisite magnetic field sensors. Magnetic devices, which rely on the modulation of a local vector order parameter- the local magnetic moment, have been used as memory elements, high-frequency spin-transfer oscillators, and magnetic field sensors. In a hybrid superconducting-magnetic device, these two order parameters compete, with one type of order suppressing the other. Recent interest in ultra-low-power, high-density cryogenic memories has spurred new interest in merging superconducting and magnetic behavior so as to exploit these two competing order parameters to produce novel switching elements. Here, we describe a reconfigurable two-layer magnetic spin valve integrated within a Josephson junction. Our measurements separate the suppression in the superconducting coupling due to the exchange field in the magnetic layers, which causes depairing of the supercurrent, from the suppression due to the magnetic field generated by the magnetic layers. The exchange field suppression of the superconducting order parameter is a tunable and switchable behavior that is also scalable to nanometer device dimensions. These devices are the first to demonstrate nonvolatile, size-independent switching of the Josephson coupling, in both magnitude and phase, and they may allow for the first nanoscale superconducting memory devices.
The superconducting transition temperature (TC) in nanostructured Pb remains nearly constant as the particle size is reduced from 65 to 7nm, below which size the superconductivity is lost rather abruptly. In contrast, there is a large enhancement in the upper critical field (HC2) in the same size regime. We explore the origin of the unusual robustness of the TC over such a large particle size range in nanostructured Pb, by measuring the temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap in planar tunnel junctions of Al/Al2O3/nano-Pb. We show that below 22nm, the electron phonon coupling …
In europium-based iron pnictides superconducting Fe-planes can be influenced by a Zeeman field originated from the neighboring Eu-planes. The field tends to induce spin-density waves with a ferromagnetic average which coexists with the superconducting order by forming complementary patterns of the superconducting and magnetic order parameters in a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase and a two-dimensional textured-superconducting phase. The hard gap around the Fermi energy disappears in these fragile inhomogeneous superconducting states, which features, instead, V-shaped spin-resolved local …
Transition metal dichalcogenides like 2H-NbSe2 in their two-dimensional (2D) form exhibit Ising superconductivity with the quasiparticle spins are firmly pinned in the direction perpendicular to the basal plane. This enables them to withstand exceptionally high magnetic fields beyond the Pauli limit for superconductivity. Using field-angle-resolved magnetoresistance experiments for fields rotated in the basal plane we investigate the field-angle dependence of the upper critical field (Hc2), which directly reflects the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. We observe a six-fold nodal…
Artificially engineered topological superconductivity has emerged as a viable route to create Majorana modes, exotic quasiparticles which have raised great expectations for storing and manipulating information in topological quantum computational schemes. The essential ingredients for their realization are spin non-degenerate metallic states proximitized to an s-wave superconductor. In this context, proximity-induced superconductivity in materials with a sizable spin-orbit coupling has been heavily investigated in recent years. Although there is convincing evidence that superconductivity may i…
Unconventional superconductors represent one of the most intriguing quantum states of matter. In particular, multiorbital systems have the potential to host exotic non-unitary superconducting states. While the microscopic origin of non-unitarity is not yet fully solved, competing interactions are suggested to play a crucial role in stabilizing such states. The interplay between charge order and superconductivity has been a recurring theme in unconventionally superconducting systems, ranging from cuprate-based superconductors to dichalcogenide systems and even to twisted van der Waals materials…
In this paper we review several aspects of mesoscopic hybrid superconducting systems. In particular we consider charge and heat transport properties in hybrid superconducting-metal structures and the effect of charging energy in superconducting nanostructures.
The onset temperature of superconducting fluctuation Tonset of Bi2Sr2-xRxCuOy (R=La and Eu) was studied by measuring the Nernst effect. We found that Tonset has a x and R dependence that is quite different from both the pseudogap temperature T* and the critical temperature Tc. Our results support the picture that the incoherent superconductivity, which has been observed below Tonset, is qualitatively different from the pseudogap phenomenon that is characterized by T*. The experimentally obtained phase diagram indicates that the pseudogap state suppresses Tc and enhances superconducting fluctua…
Strongly interacting electrons in solid-state systems often display tendency towards multiple broken symmetries in the ground state. The complex interplay between different order parameters can give rise to a rich phase diagram. Here, we report on the identification of intertwined phases with broken rotational symmetry in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Using transverse resistance measurements, we find a strongly anisotropic phase located in a 'wedge' above the underdoped region of the superconducting dome. Upon crossing the superconducting dome, a reduction of the critical tempera…
We use neutron scattering to demonstrate that electron-doped superconducting Pr0.88LaCe0.12CuO4 in the underdoped regime is electronically phase separated in the ground state, showing the coexistence of a superconducting phase with a three-dimensional antiferromagnetically ordered phase and a quasi-two-dimensional spin density wave modulation. The Neel temperature of both antiferromagnetic phases decreases linearly with increasing superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and vanishes when optimal superconductivity is achieved. These results indicate that the electron-doped copper oxides are…
The composite material, consisting of metallic particles Ag5Pb2O6 diluted in insulating CuO matrix, has been investigated in a narrow concentration range separating ballistic tunnel transport from hopping conductivity. The formation of intergrain conducting bridges between metallic particles has been avoided by a careful metallurgic treatment. Resistivity is indicated by temperature dependence lnR~(T0/T)^1/2, and this dependence appeals an attention for possible one dimensional conductivity which could be looked upon as a property uniquely associated with an onset of the superconductivity exte…
We have studied the magnetic and superconducting properties of Ba(Fe$_{0.95}$Co$_{0.05}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ as a function of temperature and external magnetic field using neutron scattering and muon spin rotation. Below the superconducting transition temperature the magnetic and superconducting order parameters coexist and compete. A magnetic field can significantly enhance the magnetic scattering in the superconducting state, roughly doubling the Bragg intensity at 13.5 T. We perform a microscopic modelling of the data by use of a five-band Hamiltonian relevant to iron pnictides. In the supercond…
We present Raman scattering experiments in ${\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4}$ single crystals at various doping levels x and compare the results with theoretical predictions obtained assuming an interaction mediated by spin and charge fluctuations. The light-scattering selection rules allow us to disentangle their respective contributions. We find that the glue spectral function is spin-dominated at low doping while the contribution of charge fluctuations becomes dominant around optimal doping. This indicates that the fluctuations of a nearly ordered state with coexisting spin and charge order support …
We present neutron diffraction measurements on single crystal samples of non-superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCrx)2As2 as a function of Cr-doping for 0<=x<=0.47. The average SDW moment is independent of concentration for x<=0.2 and decreases rapidly for x>=0.3. For concentrations in excess of 30% chromium, we find a new G-type antiferromagnetic phase which rapidly becomes the dominant magnetic ground state. Strong magnetism is observed for all concentrations measured and competition between these ordered states and superconductivity naturally explains the absence of superconductivity in the Cr-doped ma…
Epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures are promising as a platform for gate-tunable superconducting electronics. Thus far, the superconducting properties in such hybrid systems have been predicted based on simplified hybridization models which neglect the electronic structure that can arise at the interface. Here, we demonstrate that the hybrid electronic structure derived at the interface between semiconducting black phosphorus and atomically thin films of lead can drastically modify the superconducting properties of the thin metallic film. Using ultra-low temperature scannin…
The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.945F_0.055 was studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p~2.4GPa by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and magnetization measurements. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic are…
We have measured the transport properties of two mesoscopic hybrid loops composed of a normal-metal arm and a superconducting arm. The samples differed in the transmittance of the normal/superconducting interfaces. While the low transmittance sample showed monotonic behavior in the low temperature resistance, magnetoresistance and differential resistance, the high transmittance sample showed reentrant behavior in all three measurements. This reentrant behavior is due to coherent Andreev reflection at the normal/superconducting interfaces. We compare the reentrance effect for the three differen…
We have studied the momentum dependence of the energy gap of Bi2(Sr,R)2CuOy by angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), particularly focusing on the difference between R=La and Eu. By comparing the gap function and characteristic temperatures between the two sets of samples, we show that there exist three distinct energy scales, Δpg, Δsc0, and Δeff sc0, which correspond to T* (pseudogap temperature), Tonset (onset temperature of fluctuating superconductivity), and Tc (critical temperature of coherent superconductivity). The results not only support the existence of a pseudogap state b…
In certain unconventional superconductors with sizable electronic correlations, the availability of closely competing pairing channels leads to characteristic soft collective fluctuations of the order parameters, which leave fingerprints in many observables and allow to scrutinize the phase competition. Superconducting layered materials, where electron-electron interactions are enhanced with decreasing thickness, are promising candidates to display these correlation effects. In this work, we report the existence of a soft collective mode in single-layer NbSe$_2$, observed as a characteristic r…

We study superconductivity in an ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture loaded into a square optical lattice subjected to a staggered flux. While the bosons form a superfluid at very low temperature and weak interaction, the interacting fermions experience an additional long-ranged attractive interaction mediated by phonons in the bosonic superfluid. This leads us to consider a generalized Hubbard model with on-site and nearest-neighbor attractive interactions, which give rise to two competing superconducting channels. We use the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory to determine the regimes where distinct s…
We report results from a systematic study of the competition of exotic triplet pair density wave (PDW) superconductivity (SC) with homogeneous (zero pair momentum) SC in strongly polarized media such as half metallic systems. From the two different PDW states allowed by symmetry in this background only one may dominate or even coexist with homogeneous SC. We propose a direct experimental identification of PDW SC in this context. Our results suggest that these exotic states may plausibly emerge in heterostructures involving proximity of SC with half-metallic CrO$_2$ where induced SC is establis…
We argue that spin-sensitive quasiparticle scattering may generate electron-hole imbalance in superconducting structures, such as, e.g., superconducting-normal hybrids with spin-active interfaces. We elucidate a transparent physical mechanism for this effect demonstrating that scattering rates for electrons and holes at such interfaces differ from each other. Explicitly evaluating the wave functions of electron-like and hole-like excitations in superconducting-normal bilayers we derive a general expression for the thermoelectric current and show that -- in the presence of electron-hole imbalan…
The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has unveiled a rich variety of superconducting, magnetic and topologically nontrivial phases. The existence of all these phases in one material, and their tunability, has opened new pathways for the creation of unusual gate tunable junctions. However, the required conditions for their creation - gate induced transitions between phases in zero magnetic field - have so far not been achieved. Here, we report on the first experimental demonstration of a device that is both a zero-field Chern insulator and a superconductor. The Chern ins…
We generalize the representation of the real time Green's functions introduced by Langreth and Nordlander [Phys. Rev. B 43 2541 (1991)] and Meir and Wingreen [Phys. Rev. Lett. 68 2512 (1992)] in stationary quantum transport in order to study problems with hybrid structures containing normal (N) and superconducting (S) pieces. We illustrate the treatment in a S-N junction under a stationary bias and investigate in detail the behavior of the equilibrium currents in a normal ring threaded by a magnetic flux with attached superconducting wires at equilibrium. We analyze the flux sensitivity of the…
We observe large amplitude changes in the resistance of ferromagnetic (F) wires at the onset of superconductivity of adjacent superconductors (S). New sharp peaks of large amplitude are found in the magnetoresistance of the F-wires. We discuss a new mechanism for the long-range superconducting proximity effect in F/S nanostructures based on the analysis of the topologies of actual Fermi-surfaces in ferromagnetic metals.
A hybrid ferromagnet-superconductor spin valve is proposed. Its operation relies on the interplay between nonequilibrium transport and proximity-induced exchange coupling in superconductors. Huge tunnel magnetoresistance values as large as some 10^6% can be achieved in suitable ferromagnet-superconductor combinations under proper voltage biasing. The controllable spin-filter nature of the structure combined with its intrinsic simplicity make this setup attractive for low-temperature spintronic applications where reduced power dissipation is an additional requirement.
We investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of competing coexisting superconducting (SC) and charge-density wave (CDW) orders in an attractive Hubbard model. A time-periodic laser field $\vec{A}(t)$ lifts the SC-CDW degeneracy, since the CDW couples linearly to the field ($\vec{A}$), whereas SC couples in second order ($\vec{A}^2$) due to gauge invariance. This leads to a striking resonance: When the photon energy is red-detuned compared to the equilibrium single-particle energy gap, CDW is enhanced and SC is suppressed, while this behavior is reversed for blue detuning. Both orders oscillate w…
Many recently discovered advanced materials, such as high-Tc cuprates, iron pnictides and several heavy-fermions, exhibit a rich phase diagram suggesting the presence of different competing interactions that would lead to various types of ordering. Nevertheless, there is not yet a clear unifying picture allowing the understanding of the detailed mechanisms that generate such competing interactions. Having such a picture, however, could quite well be at the very roots of the requirements for understanding high-Tc superconductivity in cuprates and pnictides, for instance. In this work we conside…
Epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor hybrid materials are an excellent basis for studying mesoscopic and topological superconductivity, as the semiconductor inherits a hard superconducting gap while retaining tunable carrier density. Here, we investigate double-quantum-dot devices made from InAs nanowires with a patterned epitaxial Al two-facet shell that proximitizes two gate-defined segments along the nanowire. We follow the evolution of mesoscopic superconductivity and charging energy in this system as a function of magnetic field and voltage-tuned barriers. Inter-dot coupling is varied f…
We present electrical transport experiments performed on submicron hybrid devices made of a ferromagnetic conductor (Co) and a superconducting (Al) electrode. The sample was patterned in order to separate the contributions of the Co conductor and of the Co-Al interface. We observed a strong influence of the Al electrode superconductivity on the resistance of the Co conductor. This effect is large only when the interface is highly transparent. We characterized the dependence of the observed resistance decrease on temperature, bias current and magnetic field. As the differential resistance of th…
We argue that electron-electron interactions fundamentally restrict the penetration length of Cooper pairs into a diffusive normal metal (N) from a superconductor (S). At low temperatures this Cooper pair dephasing length $L_φ$ remains finite and does not diverge at $T \to 0$. We evaluate the subgap conductance of NS hybrids in the presence of electron-electron interactions and demonstrate that this new length $L_φ$ can be directly extracted from conductance measurements in such structures.
Currently, the superconducting diode effect (SDE) is actively discussed due to large application potential in superconducting electronics. In particular, the superconducting hybrid structures based on three-dimensional (3D) topological insulators are among the best candidates due to the strongest spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Most of the theoretical studies of the SDE focus either on full numerical calculation, which is often rather complicated or on the phenomenological approach. In the present paper we perform a comparison of the linearized and nonlinear microscopic approaches in the supercondu…
Competing pairing channels have been proposed in superfluid $^3$He, in the high temperature cuprate superconductors, and pnictide superconductors. While strong experimental support exists for this in superfluid $^3$He, the case for superconductors is weaker. Here, we show that $A15$ superconductors provide a compelling example for competing superconducting order. We present microscopic arguments that $A15$ superconductors have a competing d-wave order in addition to usual s-wave superconductivity and show that this d-wave order provides a unifying explanation for a series of diverse experiment…

We have determined the superconducting and magnetic properties of a hydrothermally synthesized powder sample of tetragonal FeS using muon spin rotation (μSR). The superconducting properties are entirely consistent with those of a recently published study, showing fully gapped behavior and giving a penetration depth of λ_{ab} = 204(3) nm. However, our zero-field μSR data are rather different and indicate the presence of a small, non-superconducting magnetic phase within the sample. These results highlight that sample-to-sample variations in magnetism can arise in hydrothermally prepared phases,…
A superconducting quantum magnetometer based on magnetic flux-driven modulation of the density of states of a proximized metallic nanowire is theoretically analyzed. With optimized geometrical and material parameters transfer functions up to a few mV/Phi_0 and intrinsic flux noise ~10^{-9}Phi_0 Hz^{-1/2} below 1 K are achievable. The opportunity to access single-spin detection joined with limited dissipation (of the order of ~ 10^{-14} W) make this magnetometer interesting for the investigation of the switching dynamics of molecules or individual magnetic nanoparticles.
In complex transition metal oxides (TMO) an arrested electronic phase separation (PS) appears by tuning the system near a Lifshitz transition in multiband Hubbard models. The PS in La2CuO4+y near insulator to metal transition (IMT) is made of short range Charge Density Wave (CDW) order inhomogeneity coexisting with quenched lattice disorder. While at high doping y=0.1 percolation gives a single superconducting phase, near the IMT at y=0.06 two coexisting superconducting phases appear: the first one with a critical temperature Tc1=16 K and the second one with Tc2=29K. It is known that the two s…
In this work, we review and expand recent theoretical proposals for the realization of electronic thermal diodes based on tunnel-junctions of normal metal and superconducting thin films. Starting from the basic rectifying properties of a single hybrid tunnel junction, we will show how the rectification efficiency can be largely increased by combining multiple junctions in an asymmetric chain of tunnel-coupled islands. We propose three different designs, analyzing their performance and their potential advantages. Besides being relevant from a fundamental physics point of view, this kind of devi…
Within the Ginzburg-Landau model we study the critical field and temperature enhancement for crossing superconducting channels formed either along the sample edges or domain walls in thin-film magnetically coupled superconducting - ferromagnetic bilayers. The corresponding Cooper pair wave function can be viewed as a hybridization of two order parameter (OP) modes propagating along the boundaries and/or domain walls. Different momenta of hybridized OP modes result in the formation of vortex chains outgoing from the crossing point of these channels. Near this crossing point the wave functions o…
We have fabricated and studied a system of two tunable and coupled nonlinear superconducting resonators. The nonlinearity is introduced by galvanically coupled dc-SQUIDs. We simulate the system response by means of a circuit model, which includes an additional signal path introduced by the electromagnetic environment. Furthermore, we present two methods allowing us to experimentally determine the nonlinearity. First, we fit the measured frequency and flux dependence of the transmission data to simulations based on the equivalent circuit model. Second, we fit the power dependence of the transmi…
Nonlocal entanglement is crucial for quantum information processes. While nonlocal entanglement has been realized for photons, it is much more difficult to demonstrate for electrons. One approach that has been proposed is to use hybrid superconducting/normal-metal devices, where a Cooper pair splits into spin-entangled electrons in two spatially separated normal-metal leads. This process of nonlocal Andreev reflection is predicted to lead to a negative nonlocal resistance and positive current-current correlation. By cross-correlation measurements as well as measurements of the local and nonloc…
The ac Josephson effect in hybrid systems of a normal mesoscopic conductor coupled to two superconducting (S) leads is investigated theoretically. A general formula of the ac components of time-dependent current is derived which is valid for arbitrary interactions in the normal region. We apply this formula to analyze a S-normal-S system where the normal region is a noninteracting single level quantum dot. We report the physical behavior of time-averaged nonequilibrium distribution of electrons in the quantum dot, the formation of Andreev bound states, and ac components of the time-dependent c…
We propose a highly efficient thermoelectric diode device built from the coupling of a quantum dot with a normal or ferromagnetic electrode and a superconducting reservoir. The current shows a strongly nonlinear behavior in the forward direction (positive thermal gradients) while it almost vanishes in the backward direction (negative thermal gradients). Our discussion is supported by a gauge-invariant current-conserving transport theory accounting for electron-electron interactions inside the dot. We find that the diode behavior is greatly tuned with external gate potentials, Zeeman splittings…
We present studies of the photoexcited quasiparticle dynamics in Tl$_{2}$Ba$_{2}$Ca$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{y}$ (Tl-2223) using femtosecond optical techniques. Deep into the superconducting state (below 40 K), a dramatic change occurs in the temporal dynamics associated with photoexcited quasiparticles rejoining the condensate. This is suggestive of entry into a coexistence phase which, as our analysis reveals, opens a gap in the density of states (in addition to the superconducting gap), and furthermore, competes with superconductivity resulting in a depression of the superconducting gap.
Shot noise cross-correlations in normal metal-superconductor-normal metal structures are discussed at arbitrary interface transparencies using both the scattering approach of Blonder, Tinkham and Klapwik and a microscopic Green's function approach. Surprisingly, negative crossed conductance in such set-ups [R. Melin and D. Feinberg, Phys. Rev. B 70, 174509 (2004)] does not preclude the possibility of positive noise cross-correlations for almost transparent contacts. We conclude with a phenomenological discussion of interactions in the one dimensional leads connected to the superconductor, whic…
We propose a realization of flux qubit based on the hybrid ferromagnetic-superconducting device where the flux bias is induced purely by vector potential of the vanishing magnetic field. We support our conclusions with theoretical analysis and self-consistent three-dimensional simulations for material specific parameters.
Experimental evidence for the existence of a fluctuating charge-density wave order in the pseudogap regime of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ has renewed interest in its interplay with superconductivity. Here, we consider the problem within a nonlinear sigma model, which was recently proposed to describe the apparent competition between the two order parameters. In particular, we use a saddle-point approximation to calculate the properties of superconducting vortex excitations within such a model. In addition, we analytically calculate a collection of experimentally observable quantities, which probe b…
