The discovery of magic angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has unveiled a rich variety of superconducting, magnetic and topologically nontrivial phases. The existence of all these phases in one material, and their tunability, has opened new pathways for the creation of unusual gate tunable junctions. However, the required conditions for their creation - gate induced transitions between phases in zero magnetic field - have so far not been achieved. Here, we report on the first experimental demonstration of a device that is both a zero-field Chern insulator and a superconductor. The Chern insulator occurs near moire cell filling factor v = +1 in a hBN non-aligned MATBG device and manifests itself via an anomalous Hall effect. The insulator has Chern number C = +-1 and a relatively high Curie temperature of Tc = 4.5 K. Gate tuning away from this state exposes strong superconducting phases with critical temperatures of up to Tc = 3.5 K. In a perpendicular magnetic field above B > 0.5 T we observe a transition of the /C/= +1 Chern insulator from Chern number C = +-1 to C = 3, characterized by a quantized Hall plateau with Ryx = h/3e2. These observations show that interaction-induced symmetry breaking in MATBG leads to zero-field ground states that include almost degenerate and closely competing Chern insulators, and that states with larger Chern numbers couple most strongly to the B-field. By providing the first demonstration of a system that allows gate-induced transitions between magnetic and superconducting phases, our observations mark a major milestone in the creation of a new generation of quantum electronics.
We predict twisted double bilayer graphene to be a versatile platform for the realization of fractional Chern insulators readily targeted by tuning the gate potential and the twist angle. Remarkably, these topologically ordered states of matter, including spin singlet Halperin states and spin polarized states in Chern number $\mathcal C=1$ and $\mathcal{C}= 2$ bands, occur at high temperatures and without the need for an external magnetic field.
We consider magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at filling $ν=+3$, where experiments have observed a robust quantized anomalous Hall effect. This has been attributed to the formation of a valley- and spin-polarized Chern insulating ground state that spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry, and is stabilized by a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate. We identify three different types of domain wall, and study their properties and energetic selection mechanisms via theoretical arguments and Hartree-Fock calculations adapted to deal with inhomogeneous moiré systems. We comment on th…
Studies of twisted moiré systems have been mainly focused on two-dimensional (2D) materials such as graphene with Dirac points and transition-metal-dichalcogenide so far. Here we propose a twisted bilayer of 2D systems which feature stable quadratic-band-touching points and find exotic physics different from previously studied twisted moiré systems. Specifically, we show that exactly flat bands can emerge at magic angles and, more interestingly, each flat band exhibits a high Chern number ($C=\pm 2$). We further consider the effect of Coulomb interactions in such magic-angle twisted systems an…
Compared with twisted bilayer graphene, twisted double bilayer graphene (TDBG) provides another important platform to realize the moiré flat bands. In this paper, we first calculate the valley Chern number phase diagram of TDBG in the parameter space spanned by the twist angle and the interlayer electric potential. To include the effects of interactions, we then phenomenologically introduce the spin-splitting and valley-splitting. We find that when the valley splitting is larger than the bandwidth of the first conduction band so that a gap is opened and the spin splitting is relatively weak, t…
We analyze competition between different ordered states in bilayer graphene (BLG). Combining arguments based on SU(4) spin-valley flavor symmetry with a mean field analysis, we identify the lowest energy state with the anomalous Hall insulator (AHI). This state is an SU(4) singlet excitonic insulator with broken time reversal symmetry, exhibiting quantized Hall effect in the absence of external magnetic field. Applied electric field drives an Ising-type phase transition, restoring time reversal symmetry. Applied magnetic field drives a transition from the AHI state to a quantum Hall ferromagne…
We show that the flat bands in the chiral model of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene remain exactly flat in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This is shown by an exact mapping between the model and the lowest Landau level wavefunctions at an effective magnetic field, in which the external field is either augmented or reduced by one flux quantum per unit cell. When the external field reaches one flux quantum per unit cell, the model exhibits a topological phase transition. These findings allow us to analyze a Jain-series of Fractional Chern Insulators states in the exactly flat…
We propose a method for studying the strong interaction regimes in twisted bilayer graphene using hybrid Wannier functions, that are Wannier-like in one direction and Bloch-like in the other. We focus on the active bands as given by the continuum model proposed by Bistritzer and MacDonald, and discuss the properties of corresponding hybrid Wannier functions. We then employ the method for a study of the fillings of $\pm 3$ electrons per moiré cell using the Hartree-Fock method. We discuss at length different regimes under which a quantized anomalous Hall effect is seen in these two fillings.
We report the nanoscale imaging of Ti-doped bilayer calcium ruthenates during the Mott metal-insulator transition by microwave impedance microscopy. Different from a typical first-order phase transition where coexistence of the two terminal phases takes place, a new metallic stripe phase oriented along the in-plane crystalline axes emerges inside both the G-type antiferromagnetic insulating state and paramagnetic metallic state. The effect of this electronic state can be observed in macroscopic measurements, allowing us to construct a phase diagram that takes into account the energetically com…
We perform an extensive exact diagonalization study of interaction driven insulators in spin- and valley-polarized moiré flat bands of twisted bilayer graphene aligned with its hexagonal boron nitride substrate. In addition to previously reported fractional Chern insulator phases, we provide compelling evidence for competing charge-density-wave phases at multiple fractional fillings of a realistic single-band model. A thorough analysis at different interlayer hopping parameters, motivated by experimental variability, and the role of kinetic energy at various Coulomb interaction strengths highl…

We use a perturbative renormalization group approach with short-range continuum model interactions to analyze the competition between isotropic gapped and anisotropic gapless ordered states in bilayer graphene, commenting specifically on the role of exchange and on the importance of spin and valley flavor degeneracy. By comparing the divergences of the corresponding susceptibilities, we conclude that this approach predicts gapped states for flavor numbers N=1,2,4. We also comment briefly on the related gapped states expected in chiral (ABC) trilayer graphene.
We present a field theory of Jain's composite fermion model as generalised to the bilayer quantum Hall systems. We define operators which create composite fermions and write the Hamiltonian exactly in terms of these operators. This is seen to be a complexified version of the familiar Chern Simons theory. In the mean-field approximation, the composite fermions feel a modified effective magnetic field exactly as happens in usual Chern Simons theories, and plateaus are predicted at the same values of filling factors as Lopez and Fradkin and Halperin . But unlike normal Chern Simons theories, we o…
Fractional Chern insulators (FCIs) are lattice analogues of fractional quantum Hall states that may provide a new avenue toward manipulating non-abelian excitations. Early theoretical studies have predicted their existence in systems with energetically flat Chern bands and highlighted the critical role of a particular quantum band geometry. Thus far, however, FCI states have only been observed in Bernal-stacked bilayer graphene aligned with hexagonal boron nitride (BLG/hBN), in which a very large magnetic field is responsible for the existence of the Chern bands, precluding the realization of …
We construct a continuum model for the Moiré superlattice of twisted bilayer MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, and study the band structure of the bilayer in both ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases. We find the system exhibits highly tunable Chern bands with Chern number up to $3$. We show that a twist angle of $1^\circ$ turns the highest valence band into a flat band with Chern number $\pm1$ that is isolated from all other bands in both FM and AFM phases. This result provides a promising platform for realizing time-reversal breaking correlated topological phases, such as fractional Chern ins…
We study the fractional quantum Hall effect in the central Landau level of bilayer graphene. By tuning the external applied magnetic field and the electric bias between the two layers one can access a regime where there is a degeneracy between Landau levels with orbital characters corresponding to N=0 and N=1 Galilean Landau levels. While the Laughlin state is generically the ground state for filling $ν=1/3$ we find that it can be destroyed and replaced by a Wigner crystal at the same filling factor by tuning the bias and applied field. This competition does not take place at $ν=2/3$ where the…
Motivated by recent experiments [H. Zhou, \emph{et al.}, Science {\bf 375}, 774 (2022) and S. C. de la Barrera, \emph{et al.}, arXiv:2110.13907], here we propose a general mechanism for valley and/or spin degeneracy lifting of the electronic bands in doped Bernal bilayer graphene, subject to electric displacement ($D$) fields. A $D$-field induced layer polarization (LP), when accompanied by Hubbard repulsion driven layer antiferromagnet (LAF) and next-nearest-neighbor repulsion driven quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) orders, lifts the four-fold degeneracy of electronic bands, yielding a quarter me…
Quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) multilayers provide a platform of topological materials with high Chern numbers. We investigate the localization routes of bilayer QAH systems with Chern number C = 2 under strong disorder, by numerical simulations on their quantum transport properties and the Chern-Simons axion coupling. Compared to the single layer counterpart with C = 2, the localization trajectories present much richer behaviors, for example, the existence of the stable intermediate state with C = 1 can be tuned by model parameters. This state was always unstable in the single layer case. Furth…
We derive a general relation between the stacking vector ${\bf u}$ describing the relative shift of two layers of bilayer graphene and the Chern index. We find $C = ν- \text{sign}\left(|V_{AB}|-|V_{BA}|\right)$, where $ν$ is a valley index and $|V_{αβ}|$ the absolute value of stacking potentials that depend on ${\bf u}$ and that uniquely determine the interlayer interaction; AA stacking plays no role in the topological character. With this expression we show that while ideal and relaxed minimally twisted bilayer graphene appear so distinct as to be almost different materials, their Chern index…
We study the phase diagram of an effective model of competing nematic and antiferromagnetic orders of interacting electrons on the Bernal-stacked honeycomb bilayer, as relevant for bilayer graphene. In the noninteracting limit, the model features a semimetallic ground state with quadratic band touching points at the Fermi level. Taking the effects of short-range interactions into account, we demonstrate the existence of an extended region in the mean-field phase diagram characterized by coexisting nematic and antiferromagnetic orders. By means of a renormalization group approach, we reveal tha…
We implement a self-consistent Hartree-Fock approximation based on a microscopic model in real space, which allows us to consider the interplay between the Hubbard and the extended Coulomb interaction in twisted bilayer graphene at the magic angle. These two interactions tend to favor different symmetry breaking patterns, having therefore complementary roles in the regimes where one or the other dominates. We show that, for sufficiently large values of the on-site Hubbard repulsion, magic angle graphene has an antiferromagnetic ground state at the charge neutrality point, while at half-filling…
The interplay between strong electron-electron interactions and band topology can lead to novel electronic states that spontaneously break symmetries. The discovery of flat bands in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) with nontrivial topology has provided a unique platform in which to search for new symmetry-broken phases. Recent scanning tunneling microscopy and transport experiments have revealed a sequence of topological insulating phases in MATBG with Chern numbers $C=\pm 3, \, \pm 2, \, \pm 1$ near moiré band filling factors $ν= \pm 1, \, \pm 2, \, \pm 3$, corresponding to a simp…
In bilayer graphene rotationally faulted to theta=1.1 degrees, interlayer tunneling and rotational misalignment conspire to create a pair of low energy flat band that have been found to host various correlated phenomena at partial filling. Most work to date has focused on the zero magnetic field phase diagram, with magnetic field (B) used as a probe of the B=0 band structure. Here, we show that twisted bilayer graphene (tBLG) in a B as low as 2T hosts a cascade of ferromagnetic Chern insulators with Chern number |C|=1,2 and 3. We argue that the emergence of the Chern insulators is driven by th…
Performing a leading-order renormalization group analysis, here we compute the effects of generic local or short-range electronic interactions in monolayer and Bernal bilayer graphene. Respectively in these two systems chiral quasiparticles display linear and biquadratic band touching, leading to linearly vanishing and constant DOS. Consequently, the former system remains stable for weak enough local interactions, and supports a variety of ordered phases only beyond a critical strength of interactions. By contrast, ordered phases can nucleate for sufficiently weak interactions in bilayer graph…
Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MA-TBG) exhibits intriguing quantum phase transitions triggered by enhanced electron-electron interactions when its flat-bands are partially filled. However, the phases themselves and their connection to the putative non-trivial topology of the flat bands are largely unexplored. Here we report transport measurements revealing a succession of doping-induced Lifshitz transitions that are accompanied by van Hove singularities (VHS) which facilitate the emergence of correlation-induced gaps and topologically non-trivial sub-bands. In the presence of a magnetic…
Interactions among electrons and the topology of their energy bands can create novel quantum phases of matter. Most topological electronic phases appear in systems with weak electron-electron interactions. The instances where topological phases emerge only as a result of strong interactions are rare, and mostly limited to those realized in the presence of intense magnetic fields. The discovery of flat electronic bands with topological character in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has created a unique opportunity to search for new strongly correlated topological phases. Here we intr…
The advent of Moiré materials has galvanized interest in the nature of charge carriers in topological bands. In contrast to conventional materials where charge carriers are electron-like quasiparticles, topological bands allow for more exotic possibilities where charge is carried by nontrivial topological textures, such as skyrmions. However, the real space description of skyrmions is ill-suited to address the limit of small or `baby' skyrmions which consist of an electron and a few spin flips. Here, we study the formation of the smallest skyrmions -- spin polarons, formed as bound states of a…
We analyze the phase diagram of the Bilayer graphene (BLG) at zero temperature and doping. Assuming that at the high energies the electronic system of BLG can be described within a weak coupling theory (consistent with the experimental evidence), we systematically study the evolution of the couplings with going from high to low energies. The divergences of the couplings at some energies indicates the tendency towards certain symmetry breakings. Carrying out this program, we found that the phase diagram is determined by microscopic couplings defined on the short distances (initial conditions). …
Here, we propose quantum spin Hall-like phononic states in van der Waals bilayer systems with antiferromagnetic ordering. Antiferromagnetic ordering in bilayer systems with small interlayer interaction makes the total Chern number zero, where the Chern numbers for each layer are opposite to each other. In bilayer CrI3 where antiferromagnetic ordering has been experimentally demonstrated, we show that the quantum spin Hall-like states appear with spatially separated chiral edge modes.
Electronic states at domain walls in bilayer graphene are studied by analyzing their four and two band continuum models, by performing numerical calculations on the lattice, and by using quantum geometric arguments. The continuum theories explain the distinct electronic properties of boundary modes localized near domain walls formed by interlayer electric field reversal, by interlayer stacking reversal, and by simultaneous reversal of both quantities. Boundary mode properties are related to topological transitions and gap closures which occur in the bulk Hamiltonian parameter space. The import…
Because of its large density-of-states and the 2π Berry phase near its low-energy band-contact points, neutral bilayer graphene (BLG) at zero magnetic field (B) is susceptible to chiral-symmetry breaking, leading to a variety of gapped spontaneous quantum Hall states distinguished by valley and spin-dependent quantized Hall conductivities. Among these, the layer antiferromagnetic state, which has quantum valley Hall (QVH) effects of opposite sign for opposite spins, appears to be the thermodynamic ground state. Though other gapped states have not been observed experimentally at B=0, they can b…
Flat band moiré superlattices have recently emerged as unique platforms for investigating the interplay between strong electronic correlations, nontrivial band topology, and multiple isospin 'flavor' symmetries. Twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) is an especially rich system owing to its low crystal symmetry and the tunability of its bandwidth and topology with an external electric field. Here, we find that orbital magnetism is abundant within the correlated phase diagram of tMBG, giving rise to the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in correlated metallic states nearby most odd integer fillin…
