Flat band moiré superlattices have recently emerged as unique platforms for investigating the interplay between strong electronic correlations, nontrivial band topology, and multiple isospin 'flavor' symmetries. Twisted monolayer-bilayer graphene (tMBG) is an especially rich system owing to its low crystal symmetry and the tunability of its bandwidth and topology with an external electric field. Here, we find that orbital magnetism is abundant within the correlated phase diagram of tMBG, giving rise to the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in correlated metallic states nearby most odd integer fillings of the flat conduction band, as well as correlated Chern insulator states stabilized in an external magnetic field. The behavior of the states at zero field appears to be inconsistent with simple spin and valley polarization for the specific range of twist angles we investigate, and instead may plausibly result from an intervalley coherent (IVC) state with an order parameter that breaks time reversal symmetry. The application of a magnetic field further tunes the competition between correlated states, in some cases driving first-order topological phase transitions. Our results underscore the rich interplay between closely competing correlated ground states in tMBG, with possible implications for probing exotic IVC ordering.
The discovery of monolayer graphene has initiated two fertile fields in modern condensed matter physics, Dirac semimetals and atomically-thin layered materials. When these trends meet again in transition metal compounds, which possess spin and orbital degrees of freedom and strong electron correlations, more exotic phenomena are expected to emerge in the cross section of topological states of matter and Mott physics. Here, we show by using ab initio calculations that a monolayer form of transition metal trichalcogenides (TMTs), which has a honeycomb network of transition metal cations, may exh…
We present a detailed study on the microscopic origin of magnetism in suspended and dielectrically embedded CrI$_3$ monolayer. To this end, we down-fold two distinct minimal generalized Hubbard models with different orbital basis sets from \emph{ab initio} calculations using the constrained random phase approximation. Within mean-field approximation, we show that these models are capable of describing the formation of localized magnetic moments in CrI$_3$ and of reproducing electronic properties of full \emph{ab initio} calculations. We utilize the magnetic force theorem to study microscopic m…
Based on first-principles calculations, the evolution of the electronic and magnetic properties of transition metal dihalides MX$_2$ (M= V, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; X = Cl, Br, I) is analyzed from the bulk to the monolayer limit. A variety of magnetic ground states is obtained as a result of the competition between direct exchange and superexchange. The results predict that FeX$_2$, NiX$_2$, CoCl$_2$ and CoBr$_2$ monolayers are ferromagnetic insulators with sizable magnetocrystalline anisotropies. This makes them ideal candidates for robust ferromagnetism at the single layer level. Our results also hig…
Two-dimensional (2D) magnets have great potentials for applications in next-generation information devices. Since the recent experimental discovery of intrinsic 2D magnetism in monolayer CrI$_3$ and few-layer Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, intensive studies have been stimulated in pursuing more 2D magnets and revealing their intriguing physical properties. In comparison to the magnetism based on $3d$ electrons, $4f$ electrons can provide larger magnetic moments and stronger spin-orbit coupling, but have been much less studied in the 2D forms. Only in very recent years, some exciting results have been obt…
Achieving multiferroic two-dimensional (2D) materials should enable numerous functionalities in nanoscale devices. Until now, however, predicted 2D multiferroics are very few and with coexisting yet only loosely coupled (type-I) ferroelectricity and magnetism. Here, a type-II multiferroic MXene Hf$_{2}$VC$_{2}$F$_{2}$ monolayer is identified, where ferroelectricity originates directly from its magnetism. The noncollinear Y-type spin order generates a polarization perpendicular to the spin helical plane. Remarkably, the multiferroic transition is estimated to occur above room temperature. Our i…
The monolayer halides CrX$_3$ (X=Cl, Br, I) attract significant attention for realizing 2D magnets with genuine long-range order (LRO), challenging the Mermin-Wagner theorem. Here, we show that monolayer CrCl$_3$ has the unique benefit of exhibiting tunable magnetic anisotropy upon applying a compressive strain. This opens the possibility to use CrCl$_3$ for producing and studying both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic 2D Ising-type LRO as well as the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) regime of 2D magnetism with quasi-LRO. Using state-of-the-art density functional theory, we explain how …
Motivated by the recent wealth of exotic magnetic phases emerging in two-dimensional frustrated lattices, we investigate the origin of possible magnetism in the monolayer family of triangular lattice materials $MX_2$ ($M$={V, Mn, Ni}, $X$={Cl, Br, I}). We first show that consideration of general properties such as filling and hybridization enables to formulate trends for the most relevant magnetic interaction parameters. In particular, we observe that the effects of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) can be effectively tuned through the ligand elements as the considered 3$d$ transition metal ions do no…
Spin $\frac{1}{2}$ honeycomb materials have gained substantial interest due to their exotic magnetism and possible application in quantum computing. However, in all current materials out-of-plane interactions are interfering with the in-plane order, hence a true 2D magnetic honeycomb system is still of demand. Here, we report the exfoliation of the magnetic semiconductor $α$-RuCl$_3$ into the first halide monolayers and the magnetic characterization of the spin $\frac{1}{2}$ honeycomb arrangement of turbostratically stacked RuCl$_3$ monolayers. The exfoliation is based on a reductive lithiatio…
How magnetism emerges in low-dimensional materials such as transition metal dichalcogenides at the monolayer limit is still an open question. Herein, we present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of single crystal and monolayer VSe$_{2}$, both experimentally and \emph{ab initio}. Magnetometry, X-ray magnetic circular dichrosim (XMCD) and \emph{ab initio} calculations demonstrate that the charge density wave in bulk stoichiometric VSe$_{2.0}$ causes a structural distortion with a strong reduction in the density of sates at the Fermi level, prompting the system towards a non-magnet…
It is shown that a strong impurity potential induces short-range antiferromagnetic (ferrimagnetic) order around itself in a Hubbard model on a half-filled honeycomb lattice. This implies that short-range magnetic order is induced in monolayer graphene by a nonmagnetic defect such as a vacancy with full hydrogen termination or a chemisorption defect.
To understand the magnetism of VSe$_2$, whose monolayer form has recently been reported to be a room temperature ferromagnet, Here, the combined method of conventional density functional theory with dynamical mean-field theory has been adopted. This higher-level computation method enables us to resolve many of existing controversies and contradictions in between theory and experiment. First of all, this new approach is shown to give the correct magnetic properties of both bulk and two-dimensional limit of VSe$_2$ which demonstrates its superiority to the conventional methods. The results demon…

The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has brought magnetism to the flatland. This has opened up exciting opportunities for the exploration of fundamental physics as well as for novel device applications. Here, we predict a new thermodynamically stable 2D magnetic material, K$_2$CoS$_2$, which retains its in-plane anti-ferromagnetic order down to the monolayer and bilayer limits. We find that the magnetic moments ($2.5 μ_B/$Co) are aligned along the intra-Co chains, from monolayer to bulk. The non-magnetic electronic spectrum of both the monolayer and bilayer films is …
Magnetic anisotropy is crucially important for the stabilization of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism, which is rare in nature but highly desirable in spintronics and for advancing fundamental knowledge. Recent works on CrI$_3$ and CrGeTe$_3$ monolayers not only led to observations of the long-time-sought 2D ferromagnetism, but also revealed distinct magnetic anisotropy in the two systems, namely Ising behavior for CrI$_3$ versus Heisenberg behavior for CrGeTe$_3$. Such magnetic difference strongly contrasts with structural and electronic similarities of these two materials, and understanding it …
Based on first principle calculations we have investigated the evolution of magnetism in free-standing monolayer FeSe with respect to lattice constant and magnetism in bulk FeSe. The computational results show that the magnetic order in free-standing monolayer FeSe will change from anti-ferromagnetic pair-checkboard order to stripe collinear order along with enlarging lattice constant. The magnetic order in bulk FeSe will change from stripe collinear order to anti-ferromagnetic pair-checkboard order only if structure reconstruction is allowed. We use J$_1$-J$_2$-K$_1$ model to fit the calculat…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) are a rich family of two-dimensional materials displaying a multitude of different quantum ground states. In particular, d$^3$ TMDCs are paradigmatic materials hosting a variety of symmetry broken states, including charge density waves, superconductivity, and magnetism. Among this family, NbSe$_2$ is one of the best-studied superconducting materials down to the monolayer limit. Despite its superconducting nature, a variety of results point towards strong electronic repulsions in NbSe$_2$. Here, we control the strength of the interactions experimentally v…
We report a study of electronic transport in van der Waals heterostructures composed of flakes of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator a-RuCl_3 placed on top of monolayer graphene Hall bars. While the zero-field transport shows a strong resemblance to that of isolated graphene, we find a consistently $p$-type Hall effect suggestive of multiband conduction, along with a non-monotonic and gate-voltage-dependent excursion of the resistivity at low temperatures that is reminiscent of transport in the presence of a magnetic phase transition. We interpret these data as evidence for charge transfer f…
