The recent discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials has brought magnetism to the flatland. This has opened up exciting opportunities for the exploration of fundamental physics as well as for novel device applications. Here, we predict a new thermodynamically stable 2D magnetic material, K$_2$CoS$_2$, which retains its in-plane anti-ferromagnetic order down to the monolayer and bilayer limits. We find that the magnetic moments ($2.5 μ_B/$Co) are aligned along the intra-Co chains, from monolayer to bulk. The non-magnetic electronic spectrum of both the monolayer and bilayer films is found to host flat bands and van-Hove singularities, which in instrumental in giving rise to the the magnetic ground state. Based on classical Monte-Carlo simulations, we estimate the Neel temperature for the antiferromagnetic monolayer to be $\approx 15$K. Our study thus establishes that K$_2$CoS$_2$ hosts a robust antiferromagnetic state which persists from the monolayer limit to the bulk material.
We calculate axion potential in antiferromagnetic insulators from path integral. It is derived from the effective potential for the order parameter of the antiferromagnetic phase in insulators. Static and dynamical axions are defined consistently from the potential. Consequently antiferromagnetic/paramagnetic and topological/normal orders are classified. The dynamical axion is predicted in all phases and its mass turns out to be various values up to eV scale.
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on EuIn2As2 which is predicted to be an axion insulator in the antiferromagnetic state. By utilizing soft-x-ray and vacuum-ultraviolet photons, we revealed a three-dimensional hole pocket centered at the Gamma point of bulk Brillouin zone together with a heavily hole-doped surface state in the paramagnetic phase. Upon entering the antiferromagnetic phase, the band structure exhibits a marked reconstruction characterized by the emergence of a "M"-shaped bulk band near the Fermi level. The qualitative agreement with first-principles ban…
Recent advances in the physics of current-driven antiferromagnetic skyrmions have observed the absence of a Magnus force. We outline the symmetry reasons for this phenomenon, and show that this cancellation will fail in the case of spin polarized currents. Pairing micromagnetic simulations with semiclassical spin wave transport theory, we demonstrate that skyrmions produce a spin-polarized transverse magnon current, and that spin-polarized magnon currents can in turn produce transverse motion of antiferromagnetic skyrmions. We examine qualitative differences in the frequency dependence of the …
We demonstrate theoretically that the thermal Hall effect of magnons in collinear antiferromagnetic insulators is an indicator of magnetic and topological phase transitions in the magnon spectrum. The transversal heat current of magnons caused by a thermal gradient is calculated for an antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice. An applied magnetic field drives the system from the antiferromagnetic phase via a spin-flop phase into the field-polarized phase. Besides these magnetic phase transitions we find topological phase transitions within the spin-flop phase. Both types of transitions manifest …
Light enables ultrafast, direct and nonthermal control of the exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. We consider two-dimensional honeycomb lattices described by the Kane-Mele-Hubbard model at half filling and in the strongly correlated limit, i.e., the Mott insulator phase of a canted antiferromagnet. Based on Floquet theory, we demonstrate that by changing the amplitude and frequency of polarized laser pulses, one can tune the amplitudes and signs of and even the ratio between the exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya spin interactions. Furthermore, the renormalizations of the spin int…
Magnon spin transport in a metal-antiferromagnetic insulator-ferromagnetic insulator heterostructure is considered. The spin current is generated via the spin Seebeck effect and in the limit of clean sample where the effects of interface imperfections and lattice defects are excluded. For NiO as an antiferromagnetic insulator we have a magnetic order of antiferromagnetically combined planes which are internally in ferromagnetic order. We find that the sign of the spin current depends on the magnetization direction of the plane next to the metal resulting in an even-odd effect for the spin curr…
The anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is a quantum coherent transport phenomenon that conventionally vanishes at elevated temperatures because of thermal dephasing. Therefore, it is puzzling that the AHE can survive in heavy metal (HM)/antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator (AFMI) heterostructures at high temperatures yet disappears at low temperatures. In this paper, we report that an unconventional high-temperature AHE in HM/AFMI is observed only around the Néel temperature of AFM, with large anomalous Hall resistivity up to 40 n$Ω$ cm. This mechanism is attributed to the emergence of a noncollinear AF…
Magnons in antiferromagnetic insulators couple strongly to conduction electrons in adjacent metals. We show that this interfacial tie can lead to superconductivity in a tri-layer consisting of a metal sandwiched between two antiferromagnetic insulators. The critical temperature is closely related to the magnon gap, which can be in the THz range. We estimate the critical temperature in MnF$_2$-Au-MnF$_2$ to be on the order of 1 K. The Umklapp scattering at metal-antiferromagnet interfaces leads to a d-wave superconductive pairing, in contrast to the p-wave superconductivity mediated by magnons …
We investigate spin transport in two dimensional ferromagnetic (FTI) and antiferromagnetic (AFTI) topological insulators. In presence of an in plane magnetization AFTI supports zero energy modes, which enables topologically protected edge conduction at low energy. We address the nature of current-driven spin torque in these structures and study the impact of spin-independent disorder. Interestingly, upon strong disorder the spin torque develops an antidamping component (i.e. {\em even} upon magnetization reversal) along the edges, which could enable current-driven manipulation of the antiferro…
We study the temperature dependence of spin Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)/metal bilayer systems. We calculate the amplitude of the SMR signal by using a quantum Monte Carlo simulation and examine how the SMR depends on the amplitude of the spin, thickness of the AFI layer, and randomness of the exchange interactions. Our results for simple quantum spin models provide a useful starting point for understanding SMR measurements on atomic layers of magnetic compounds.
We report an experimental study of electron transport properties of MnSe/(Bi,Sb)2Te3 heterostructures, in which MnSe is an antiferromagnetic insulator, and (Bi,Sb)2Te3 is a three-dimensional topological insulator (TI). Strong magnetic proximity effect is manifested in the measurements of the Hall effect and longitudinal resistances. Our analysis shows that the gate voltage can substantially modify the anomalous Hall conductance, which exceeds 0.1 e2/h at temperature of 1.6 K and magnetic field of 5 T, even though only the top TI surface is in proximity to MnSe. This work suggests that heterost…
Antiferromagnets may exhibit spin superfluidity since the dipole interaction is weak. We seek to establish that this phenomenon occurs in insulators such as NiO, which is a good spin conductor according to previous studies. We investigate nonlocal spin transport in a planar antiferromagnetic insulator with a weak uniaxial anisotropy. The anisotropy hinders spin superfluidity by creating a substantial threshold that the current must overcome. Nevertheless, we show that applying a high magnetic field removes this obstacle near the spin-flop transition of the antiferromagnet. Importantly, the spi…
We search for dynamical magnetoelectric phenomena in three-dimensional correlated systems with spin-orbit coupling. We focus on the antiferromagnetic insulator phases where the dynamical axion field is realized by the fluctuation of the antiferromagnetic order parameter. It is shown that the dynamical chiral magnetic effect, an alternating current generation by magnetic fields, emerges due to the time dependences of the order parameter such as antiferromagnetic resonance. It is also shown that the anomalous Hall effect arises due to the spatial variations of the order parameter such as antifer…
Intrinsic magnetic topological insulator ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ is believed to be an axion insulator in its antiferromagnetic ground state. However, direct identification of axion insulators remains experimentally elusive because the observed vanishing Hall resistance, while indicating the onset of the axion field, is inadequate to distinguish the system from a trivial normal insulator. Using numerical Green's functions, we theoretically demonstrate the quantized magnetoelectric current in a tunnel junction of atomically thin ${\mathrm{MnBi}}_{2}{\mathrm{Te}}_{4}$ sandwiched be…
We investigate a new class of topological antiferromagnetic (AF) Chern insulators driven by electronic interactions in two-dimensional systems without inversion symmetry. Despite the absence of a net magnetization, AF Chern insulators (AFCI) possess a nonzero Chern number $C$ and exhibit the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE). Their existence is guaranteed by the bifurcation of the boundary line of Weyl points between a quantum spin Hall insulator and a topologically trivial phase with the emergence of AF long-range order. As a concrete example, we study the phase structure of the honeycomb …
A magnon Nernst effect, an antiferromagnetic analogue of the magnon Hall effect in ferromagnetic insulators, has been studied experimentally for a layered antiferromagnetic insulator MnPS3 in contact with two Pt strips. Thermoelectric voltage in the Pt strips grown on MnPS3 single crystals exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence at low temperatures, which cannot be explained by electronic origins in Pt but can be ascribed to the inverse spin Hall voltage induced by a magnon Nernst effect. Control of antiferromagnetic domains in the MnPS3 crystal by magnetoelectric cooling is found to mod…
Our joint theoretical and computer experimental study of heat-to-spin conversion reveals that noncollinear antiferromagnetic insulators are promising materials for generating magnon spin currents upon application of a temperature gradient: they exhibit spin Seebeck and spin Nernst effects. Using Kubo theory and spin dynamics simulations, we explicitly evaluate these effects in a single kagome sheet of potassium iron jarosite, KFe$_3$(OH)$_6$(SO$_4$)$_2$, and predict a spin Seebeck conversion factor of $0.2 μ\mathrm{V}/\mathrm{K}$ at a temperature of $20 \mathrm{K}$.
We theoretically investigate a pure spin Hall current driven by a longitudinal temperature gradient, i.e., the spin Nernst effect (SNE), in a paramagnetic state of a collinear antiferromagnetic insulator with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The SNE in a magnetic ordered state in such an insulator was proposed by Cheng {\it et al.} [R. Cheng, S. Okamoto, and D. Xiao, Phys. Rev. Lett. 117, 217202 (2016)]. Here we show that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction can generate a pure spin Hall current even without magnetic ordering. By using a Schwinger boson mean-field theory, we calculate t…
We propose a realization of the electric-field-induced antiferromagnetic resonance. We consider three-dimensional antiferromagnetic insulators with spin-orbit coupling characterized by the existence of a topological term called the $θ$ term. By solving the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation in the presence of the $θ$ term, we show that, in contrast to conventional methods using ac magnetic fields, the antiferromagnetic resonance state is realized by ac electric fields along with static magnetic fields. This mechanism can be understood as the inverse process of the dynamical chiral magnetic effec…
A theoretical formulation for spin transport through an antiferromagnetic (AF) insulator is presented in the case driven/detected by direct/inverse spin Hall effect in two heavy metal contacts. The spin signal is shown to be transferred by the ferromagnetic correlation function of the antiferromagnet, which is calculated based on a magnon representation. To cover high temperature regimes, we include an auxiliary field representing short AF correlations and a temperature-dependent damping due to magnon scattering. The diffusion length for spin is long close to the degeneracy of the two AF magno…
We study the effective interactions between Dirac fermions on the surface of a three-dimensional topological insulator due to the proximity coupling to the magnetic fluctuations in a ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic insulator. Our results show that the magnetic fluctuations can mediate attractive interactions between Dirac fermions of both Amperean and BCS type. In the ferromagnetic case, we find pairing between fermions with parallel momenta, so-called Amperean pairing, whenever the effective Lagrangian for the magnetic fluctuations does not contain a quadratic term. The pairing interaction…
The antiferromagnetic topological insulator MnBi2Te4 (MBT) exhibits an ideal platform to study exotic topological phenomena and magnetic properties. The transport signatures of magnetic phase transitions in the MBT family materials have been well-studied. However, their mechanical properties and magneto-mechanical coupling have not been well-explored. We use nanoelectromechanical systems to study the intrinsic magnetism in MBT thin flakes via their magnetostrictive coupling. We investigate mechanical resonance signatures of magnetic phase transitions from antiferromagnetic (AFM) to canted anti…
Antiferromagnetic topological insulators harbor topological in-gap surface states protected by an anti-unitary $S$ symmetry, which is broken by the inevitable presence of domain walls. Whether an antiferromagnetic topological insulator with domain walls is gapless and metallic on its topological surfaces remains to be elucidated. We show that a single non-statistical index characterizing the magnetic order of domain wall-decorated antiferromagnetic topological insulator, referred to as the Ising moment, determines the topological surface gap, which can be zero even when the $S$ symmetry is man…
In this Letter we present a comprehensive study of topological magnon bands and thermal Hall effect in non-collinear antiferromagnetic systems on the honeycomb lattice with an intrinsic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We theoretically show that the system possesses topological magnon bands with Chern number protected edge modes accompanied by a nonzero thermal magnon Hall effect. These features result from non-collinearity of the magnetic moments due to an applied out-of-plane magnetic field. Our results provide an experimental clue towards the realization of topological magnon transports i…
We investigate the nonequilibrium spin polarization due to a temperature gradient in antiferromagnetic insulators, which is the magnonic analogue of the inverse spin-galvanic effect of electrons. We derive a linear response theory of a temperature-gradient-induced spin polarization for collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnets, which comprises both extrinsic and intrinsic contributions. We apply our theory to several noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnetic insulators, i.e., to a one-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin chain, a single layer of kagome noncollinear antiferromagnet, e.g., $\text{KFe…
In this work, we theoretically study the magnon spin transport in easy-plane antiferromagnetic insulators in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. By exactly calculating the magnon spectrum, we find the band splitting due to the magnetic anisotropy can be fully compensated by the external field at a particular strength, which makes its dynamics nearly equivalent to an easy-axis antiferromagnet. As a result, the intrinsic magnon spin Hall effect due to the dipole-dipole interaction, previously predicted in easy-axis antiferromagnets is activated in easy-plane antiferromagnets. The compens…
Recently, the magnetic domain walls have been experimentally observed in antiferromagnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, where we find that the topological zero-line modes (ZLMs) appear along the domain walls. Here, we theoretically demonstrate that these ZLMs are layer-dependent in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ multilayers. For domain walls with out-of-plane ferromagnetism, we find that ZLMs are equally distributed in the odd-number layers. When domain walls possess in-plane magnetization, the ZLMs can also exist in even-number layers due to in-plane mirror-symmetry breaking. Moreover, the conducti…
The recent discovery of antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator (TI) MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has triggered great research efforts on exploring novel magnetic topological physics. Based on first-principles calculations, we find that the manipulation of magnetic orientation and order not only significantly affects material symmetries and orbital hybridizations, but also results in variant new magnetic topological phases in MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. We thus predict a series of unusual topological quantum phase transitions that are magnetically controllable in the material, including phase transitions from AFM…
We discuss several aspects of chiral optomagnonics in antiferromagnetic insulators by considering common symmetries between the electromagnetic field and spin excitations. This approach allows us to look at optical and magnetic materials from similar perspectives, and discuss useful analogies between them. We show that spin waves in collinear antiferromagnets and the electromagnetic field in vacuum are both invariant under the same eight-dimensional algebra of symmetry transformations. By such analogy, we can extend the concept of optical chirality to antiferromagnetic insulators, and demonstr…
The layer Hall effect describes electrons spontaneously deflected to opposite sides at different layers, which has been experimentally reported in the MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ thinfilms under perpendicular electric fields [Gao et al., Nature 595, 521 (2021)]. Here, we reveal a universal origin of the layer Hall effect in terms of the so-called hidden Berry curvature, as well as material design principles. Hence, it gives rise to zero Berry curvature in momentum space but nonzero layer-locked hidden Berry curvature in real space. We show that compared to that of a trivial insulator, the layer Hall effect…
We study superconductivity on the surface of a topological insulator, mediated by magnetic fluctuations in an adjacent ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic insulator. Superconductivity can arise from effective interactions between helical fermions induced by interfacial fermion-magnon interactions. For both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic insulators, these fermion-fermion interactions have the correct structure to facilitate pairing between particles located on the same side of the Fermi surface, also known as Amperean pairing. In antiferromagnets, the strength of the induced interactions ca…
Electrons and holes residing on the opposing sides of an insulating barrier and experiencing an attractive Coulomb interaction can spontaneously form a coherent state known as an indirect exciton condensate. We study a trilayer system where the barrier is an antiferromagnetic insulator. The electrons and holes here additionally interact via interfacial coupling to the antiferromagnetic magnons. We show that by employing magnetically uncompensated interfaces, we can design the magnon-mediated interaction to be attractive or repulsive by varying the thickness of the antiferromagnetic insulator b…
It is demonstrated theoretically that a thin layer of an anisotropic antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulator can effectively conduct spin current by excitation of a pair of evanescent AFM spin wave modes. The spin current flowing through the AFM is not conserved due to the interaction between the excited AFM modes and the AFM lattice, and, depending on the excitation conditions, can be either attenuated or enhanced. When the phase difference between the excited evanescent modes is close to $π/2$, there is an optimum AFM thickness for which the output spin current reaches a maximum, that can signific…
In the circular photogalvanic effect, circularly polarized light can produce a direct electron photocurrent in metals and the direction of the current depends on the polarization. We suggest that an analogous nonlinear effect exists for antiferromagnetic insulators wherein the total spin of light and spin waves is conserved. In consequence, a spin angular momentum is expected to be transfered from photons to magnons so that a circularly polarized electromagnetic field will generate a direct magnon spin current. The direction of the current is determined by the helicity of the light. We show th…
Spintronics uses spins, the intrinsic angular momentum of electrons, as an alternative for the electron charge. Its long-term goal is in the development of beyond-Moore low dissipation technology devices. Recent progress demonstrated the long-distance transport of spin signals across ferromagnetic insulators. Antiferromagnetically ordered materials are however the most common class of magnetic materials with several crucial advantages over ferromagnetic systems. In contrast to the latter, antiferromagnets exhibit no net magnetic moment, which renders them stable and impervious to external fiel…
We theoretically study the optical generation of dc spin current (i.e., a spin-current solar cell) in ordered antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic insulators, motivated by a recent study on the laser-driven spinon spin current in noncentrosymmetric quantum spin chains [H. Ishizuka and M. Sato, Phys. Rev. Lett. 122, 197702 (2019)]. Using a non-linear response theory for magnons, we analyze the dc spin current generated by a linearly-polarized electromagnetic wave (typically, terahertz or gigahertz waves). Considering noncentrosymmetric two-sublattice magnets as an example, we find a finite dc sp…
More than forty years ago, axion was postulated as an elementary particle with a low mass and weak interaction in particle physics to solve the strong $\mathcal{CP}$ (charge conjugation and parity) puzzle. Axions are also considered as a possible component of dark matter of the universe. However, the existence of axions in nature has not been confirmed. Interestingly, axions arise as pseudoscalar fields derived from the Chern-Simons theory in condensed matter physics. In antiferromagnetic insulators, the axion field can become dynamical induced by spin-wave excitations and exhibits rich exotic…
A two-dimensional time-reversal symmetric topological superconductor is a fully gapped system possessing a helical Majorana mode on the edges. This helical Majorana edge mode (HMEM), which is a Kramer's pair of two chiral Majorana edge modes in the opposite propagating directions, is robust under time-reversal symmetry protection. We propose a feasible setup and accessible measurement to provide the preliminary step of the HMEM realization by studying superconducting antiferromagnetic quantum spin Hall insulators. Since this antiferromagnetic topological insulator hosts a helical electron edge…
We propose a realization of chiral Majorana modes propagating on the hinges of a 3D antiferromagnetic topological insulator, which was recently theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the tetradymite-type $\mathrm{MnBi_2Te_4}$-related ternary chalgogenides. These materials consist of ferromagnetically ordered 2D layers, whose magnetization direction alternates between neighboring layers, forming an antiferromagnetic order. Besides surfaces with a magnetic gap, there also exsist gapless surfaces with a single Dirac cone, which can be gapped out when proximity coupled to an $s$-w…
The magnetic properties of the van der Waals magnetic topological insulators MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ and MnBi$_4$Te$_7$ are investigated by magneto-transport measurements. We evidence that the relative strength of the inter-layer exchange coupling J to the uniaxial anisotropy K controls a transition from an A-type antiferromagnetic order to a ferromagnetic-like metamagnetic state. A bi-layer Stoner-Wohlfarth model allows us to describe this evolution, as well as the typical angular dependence of specific signatures, such as the spin-flop transition of the uniaxial antiferromagnet and the switching fiel…
We theoretically investigate domain wall motion in an antiferromagnetic insulator layer caused by thermally generated spin currents in an adjacent spin-split superconductor layer. An uncompensated antiferromagnet interface enables the two crucial ingredients underlying the mechanism - spin splitting in the superconductor and absorption of spin currents by the antiferromagnet. Treating the superconductor using the quasiclassical theory and the antiferromagnet via Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert description, we find domain wall propagation along the thermal gradient with relatively large velocities $\si…
We study theoretically spin pumping in bilayers consisting of superconductors and antiferromagnetic insulators. We consider both compensated and uncompensated interfaces and include both the regular scattering channel and the Umklapp scattering channel. We find that at temperatures close to the critical temperatures and precession frequencies much lower than the gap, the spin-current is enhanced in superconductors as compared to normal metals. Otherwise, the spin-current is suppressed. The relevant precession frequencies where the spin-current in SC/AFI is enhanced compared to NM/AFI is much l…
