Artificially engineered topological superconductivity has emerged as a viable route to create Majorana modes, exotic quasiparticles which have raised great expectations for storing and manipulating information in topological quantum computational schemes. The essential ingredients for their realization are spin non-degenerate metallic states proximitized to an s-wave superconductor. In this context, proximity-induced superconductivity in materials with a sizable spin-orbit coupling has been heavily investigated in recent years. Although there is convincing evidence that superconductivity may indeed be induced, it has been difficult to elucidate its topological nature. In this work, we systematically engineer an artificial topological superconductor by progressively introducing superconductivity (Nb) into metals with strong spin-orbital coupling (Pt) and 3D topological surface states (Bi2Te3). Through a longitudinal study of the character of superconducting vortices within s-wave superconducting Nb and proximity-coupled Nb/Pt and Nb/Bi2Te3, we detect the emergence of a zero-bias peak that is directly linked to the presence of topological surface states. Supported by a detailed theoretical model, our results are rationalized in terms of competing energy trends which are found to impose an upper limit to the size of the minigap separating Majorana and trivial modes, its size being ultimately linked to fundamental materials properties.
We show that odd-parity superconductivity occurs in multilayer Rashba systems without requiring spin-triplet Cooper pairs. A pairing interaction in the spin-singlet channel stabilizes the odd-parity pair-density-wave (PDW) state in the magnetic field parallel to the two-dimensional conducting plane. It is shown that the layer-dependent Rashba spin-orbit coupling and the orbital effect play essential roles for the PDW state in binary and tricolor heterostructures. We demonstrate that the odd-parity PDW state is a symmetry-protected topological superconducting state characterized by the one-dime…

The unique physical properties make the SC/FM heterostructures as promising platforms for future superconducting spintronics and quantum computation applications. In this article, we review important research progress of SC/FM heterostructures from superconducting spintronics to quantum computation, and it is or…
Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and FMR were measured in heterostructure OC/V/Fe, were OC=Fe/Cr/Fe. Giant oscillations of Tc depending on a Cr-thickness were detected. Probable reasons of Tc-oscillation are discussed - periodic cancellation of pair-breacking exchange fields in superconducting V-layer or in fragment Fe/Cr/Fe.
Recently thermally created pure spin currents were predicted for Zeeman-split superconductor/normal metal heterostructures. Here it is shown that this "thermospin" current can lead to an accumulation of a pure spin imbalance in a system. The thermally induced spin imbalance can reach the value of Zeeman splitting of the superconducting DOS and strongly influences superconductivity in the heterostructure. Depending on the temperature difference between the superconductor and the normal reservoir it can enhance the critical temperature of the superconductor or additionally suppress the zero-temp…
Heterostructures allow the realization of electronic states that are difficult to obtain in isolated systems. Exemplary is the case of quasi-one-dimensional heterostructures formed by a superconductor and a semiconductor with spin-orbit coupling in which Majorana zero-energy modes can be realized. We study the effect of a single impurity on the spectrum of superconducting heterostructures. We find that the coupling between the superconductor and the semiconductor can strongly affect the impurity-induced states and may induce additional subgap bound states that are not present in isolated unifo…
Motivated by the recent findings of unconventional superconductivity in $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures, we study the effect of interface induced Rashba spin orbit coupling on the conductance of a three terminal "T" shape superconducting device. We calculate the differential conductance for this device within the quasi-classical formalism that includes the mixing of triplet-singlet pairing due to the Rashba spin orbit coupling. We discuss our result in the light of the conductance spectra reported by Chiu {\it et al.} for $\mathrm{CoSi_2 / TiSi_2}$ heterostructures.
The charge distribution is a basic aspect of electrical transport. In this work we investigate the self-consistent charge response of normal-superconducting heterostructures. Of interest is the variation of the charge density due to voltage changes at contacts and due to changes in the potential. We present response functions in terms of functional derivatives of the scattering matrix. We discuss corrections to the Lindhard function due to the proximity of the superconductor. We use these results to find the dynamic conductance matrix to lowest order in frequency. We illustrate similarities an…
Due to the lack of a net magnetization both at the interface and in the bulk, antiferromagnets with compensated interfaces may appear incapable of influencing the phase transition in an adjacent superconductor via the spin degree of freedom. We here demonstrate that such an assertion is incorrect by showing that proximity-coupling a compensated antiferromagnetic layer to a superconductor-ferromagnet heterostructure introduces the possibility of controlling the superconducting phase transition. The superconducting critical temperature can in fact be modulated by rotating the magnetization of th…
Interference of proximity induced superconducting correlations in mesoscopic metallic rings is sensitive to the magnetic flux $Φ$ inside these rings. This is the reason for magnetoconductance oscillations in such systems. We detected experimentally and explained theoretically a novel effect: the phase of these oscillations can switch between 0 and $π$ depending on the resistance of intermetallic interfaces and temperature. The effect is due to a nontrivial interplay between the proximity induced enhancement of the local conductivity and the proximity induced suppression of the density of state…
Superconducting spin valves based on the superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) proximity effect are considered to be a key element in the emerging field of superconducting spintronics. Here, we demonstrate the crucial role of the morphology of the superconducting layer in the operation of a multilayer S/F1/F2 spin valve. We study two types of superconducting spin valve heterostructures, with rough and with smooth superconducting layers, using transmission electron microscopy in combination with transport and magnetic characterization. We find that the quality of the S/F interface is not critical fo…
We have performed angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) on Cux(PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6 (CPSBS; x = 1.47), a superconductor derived from a topological insulator heterostructure, to elucidate the electronic states relevant to the occurrence of possible unconventional superconductivity. Upon Cu intercalation into the parent compound (PbSe)5(Bi2Se3)6, we observed a distinct energy shift of the bulk conduction band due to electron doping. Photon-energy dependent ARPES measurements of CPSBS revealed that the observed bulk band forms a cylindrical electronlike Fermi surface at the Brillouin-zone …
Considering a $d$-wave superconductor being in proximity to a two-dimensional Weyl model, a topological superconductor with gapless edge states may be realized. We here demonstrate that the system can become topologically trivial when an additional d-density-wave order is also included. The edge states become gapped and may be detected in experiments. For this, the d-density-wave order can be detected experimentally, so that different scenarios for the pseudogap in high-T$_c$ superconductors may be distinguished. Moreover, this method may be used to detect various hidden orders through putting…

We present a fully first-principles method for superconducting thin films. The layer dependent phonon spectrum is calculated to determine the layer dependence of the electron-phonon coupling for such systems, which is coupled to the Kohn-Sham-Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, and it is solved in a parameter free way. The theory is then applied to different surface facets of niobium slabs and to niobium-gold heterostructures. We investigate the dependence of the transition temperature on the thickness of the slabs and the inverse proximity effect observed in thin superconducting heterostructures.
Electronic spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is essential for various newly discovered phenomena in condensed-matter systems. In particular, one-dimensional topological heterostructures with SOC have been widely investigated in both theory and experiment for their distinct transport signatures indicating the presence of emergent Majorana fermions. However, a general framework for the SOC-affected transport in superconducting heterostructures, especially with the consideration of interfacial effects, has not been developed even regardless of the topological aspects. We hereby provide one for an effecti…
A novel state is predicted for a S/F heterostructure. It is shown that the equilibrium F/S bilayer can be in a bistable state: one state is ground and the other is metastable. One of these states is always normal and the other is superconducting. One can switch between these states by an external control parameter, for example, by an applied magnetic field. This phenomenon can manifest itself through the hysteresis behavior upon varying the applied magnetic field or, even, temperature. It can also lead to transition of the heterostructure into the superconducting state upon increase of the tem…
The prediction of material-specific properties of superconducting systems such as the electronic structure and the transition temperature is one of the major challenge in modern solid-state physics. In this paper we present the first material specific calculations of realistic superconductor -- normal metal heterostructures using density functional theory. In particular, we calculate the quasiparticle spectrum of different normal metal overlayers on a Nb(100) host. We find that the Andreev reflection leads to the formation of momentum dependent quasiparticle bands in the normal metal. As a con…
We report an investigation of current transport in Nb/Au/CaSrCuO/YBaCuO heterostructures including an antiferromagnetic interlayer (CaSrCuO). Epitaxial thin films of YBaCuO and CaSrCuO were grown by laser ablation on NdGaO substrates; the thicknesses of CaSrCuO films were 20 and 50 nm, and x=0.15 or 0.5. Our experimental results show that the superconducting current transport is increased in the Nb/Au/CaSrCuO/YBaCuO heterostructures in comparison with the ones observed in previously studied Nb/Au/YBaCuO heterostructures. It was found that the critical current of the structure is very sensitive…
The quasiclassical theory in terms of equations for the Green's functions (Eilenberger equations) is generalized in order to allow for quantitative description of the magneto-electric effects and proximity-induced triplet correlations in the presence of spin-orbit coupling in hybrid superconducting systems. The formalism is valid under the condition that the spin-orbit coupling is weak with respect to the Fermi energy, but exceeds the superconducting energy scale considerably. On the basis of the derived formalism it is shown that the triplet correlations in the spin-orbit coupled normal metal…
Modern Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are commonly fabricated from either Al or Nb electrodes, with an in-situ oxidation process to create a weak link between them. However, common problems of such planar nano- and micro-SQUIDs are hysteretic current-voltage curves, and a shallow flux modulation depth. Here, we demonstrate the formation of both Josephson junctions and SQUIDs using a dry transfer technique to stack and deterministically misalign flakes of NbSe$_{2}$; allowing one to overcome these issues. The Josephson dynamics of the resulting twisted NbSe$_{2}$-NbSe$_{2…
Using the nonequilibrium theory of superconductivity with the tunnel Hamiltonian, we consider a mesoscopic NISINISIN heterostructure, i.e., a structure consisting of five intermittent normal-metal (N) and superconducting (S) regions separated by insulating tunnel barriers (I). Applying the bias voltage between the outer normal electrodes one can drive the central N island very far from equilibrium. Depending on the resistance ratio of outer and inner tunnel junctions, one can realize either effective electron cooling in the central N island or create highly nonequilibrium energy distributions …
We predict parametrically strong enhancement of the thermoelectric effect in metallic bilayers consisting of two superconductors separated by a spin-active interface. The physical mechanism for such an enhancement is directly related to electron-hole imbalance generated by spin-sensitive quasiparticle scattering at the interface between superconducting layers. We explicitly evaluate the thermoelectric currents flowing in the system and demonstrate that they can reach maximum values comparable to the critical ones for superconductors under consideration.
Oxide heterostructures have repeatedly been shown to display apical properties at the interfaces, some of which favorable to the formation of two-dimensional electron systems, as well as high transition temperature superconductivity. In this study, we propose a novel heterostructure to potentially achieve near room-temperature superconductivity, via the carrier injection in cuprate interfaces with ferro-electrics. Using a digital design approach guided by density-functional theory, the systems of XTiO3/XCuO3/XTiO3 are thoroughly examined, confirming the formation of a two-dimensional electron …
We report on structural, DC, X-ray and neutron studies of hybrid superconducting mesa-heterostructures with a cuprate antiferromagnetic interlayer Ca1-xSrxCuO2 (CSCO). The upper electrode was bilayer Nb/Au superconductor and copper oxide superconductor YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) was the bottom electrode. It was experimentally shown that during the epitaxial growth of the two films YBCO and CSCO a charge carrier doping takes place in the CSCO interlayer with a depth about 20 nm. The conductivity of the doped part of CSCO layer is close to the metal type, while the reference CSCO film, deposited directly …
Heterostructures composed of ferromagnetic La0.7Sr0.3MnO3, ferromagnetic SrRuO3, and superconducting YBa2Cu3Ox were studied experimentally. Structures of composition Au/La0.7Sr0.3MnO3/SrRuO3/YBa2Cu3Ox were prepared by pulsed laser deposition, and their high quality was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and reflectometry. A non-collinear magnetic state of the heterostructures was revealed by means of SQUID magnetometry and polarized neutron reflectometry. We have further observed superconducting currents in mesa-structures fabricated by deposition of a second superconducting Nb layer on top of the…
We argue that Coulomb interaction can strongly influence non-local electron transport in normal-superconducting-normal structures and emphasize direct relation between Coulomb effects and non-local shot noise. In the tunneling limit non-local differential conductance is found to have an S-like shape and can turn negative at non-zero bias. At high transmissions crossed Andreev reflection yields positive noise cross-correlations and Coulomb anti-blockade of non-local electron transport.
Superconducting devices, which rely on modulating a complex superconducting order parameter in a Josephson junction, have been developed for low power logic operations, high-frequency oscillators, and exquisite magnetic field sensors. Magnetic devices, which rely on the modulation of a local vector order parameter- the local magnetic moment, have been used as memory elements, high-frequency spin-transfer oscillators, and magnetic field sensors. In a hybrid superconducting-magnetic device, these two order parameters compete, with one type of order suppressing the other. Recent interest in ultra…
The superconducting transition temperature (TC) in nanostructured Pb remains nearly constant as the particle size is reduced from 65 to 7nm, below which size the superconductivity is lost rather abruptly. In contrast, there is a large enhancement in the upper critical field (HC2) in the same size regime. We explore the origin of the unusual robustness of the TC over such a large particle size range in nanostructured Pb, by measuring the temperature dependence of the superconducting energy gap in planar tunnel junctions of Al/Al2O3/nano-Pb. We show that below 22nm, the electron phonon coupling …
In proximity to an s-wave superconductor, a one- or two-dimensional, electron- or hole-doped semiconductor with a sizable spin-orbit coupling and a Zeeman splitting can support a topological superconducting (TS) state. The semiconductor TS state has Majorana fermions as localized zero-energy excitations at order parameter defects such as vortices and sample edges. Here we examine the effects of quenched disorder from the semiconductor surface on the stability of the TS state in both electron- and hole-doped semiconductors. By considering the interplay of broken time reversal symmetry (due to Z…
High-temperature cuprate superconductors-based van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures hold high technological promise. One of the obstacles hindering progress is the detrimental effect of disorder on the properties of Josephson junctions (JJ) realized by the vdW devices. Here we report the new method of fabricating twisted vdW heterostructures made of Bi2Sr2CuCa2O8+d, crucially improving the JJ characteristics, pushing them up to those of the intrinsic JJs in bulk samples. The method combines a cryogenic stacking using a solvent-free stencil mask technique and covering interface by the insulatin…
The interplay of a potential and magnetic disorder in superconductors remains an active field of research for decades. Within the framework of the Usadel equation, we study the local density of states near a solitary classical magnetic impurity in a dirty superconducting film. We find that a potential disorder results in broadening of the delta-function in the local density of states at the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) energy. This broadening is proportional to the square root of a normal-state spreading resistance of the film. We demonstrate that mesoscopic fluctuations caused by a potential disord…
It is well-known that the ground state of homogeneous superconducting systems with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in the presence of the Zeeman field is the so-called helical state, which is characterized by the phase modulation of the order parameter, but zero supercurrent density. In this work we investigate the realization of the helical state in a hybrid system with spatially separated superconductivity and exchange field by considering S/F bilayer on top of a 3D topological insulator. This system is characterized by strong spin-momentum locking and, consequently, provides the most favorable co…
Current noise provides useful information on correlations important for transport properties of mesoscopic systems. Of particular interest, both experimentally and theoretically, are heterostructures of normal metals and superconductors. We use an extended Keldysh-Green's function approach to calculate the current correlations fully accounting for the superconducting proximity effect. The shot noise in diffusive wires shows a reentrant behaviour, similar to the reentrance effect of the conductance. At intermediate energies the effective charge (the ratio of the differential noise and different…
When two superconductors are connected across a ferromagnet, the spin configuration of the transferred Cooper pairs can be modulated due to magnetic exchange interaction. The resulting supercurrent can reverse its sign across the Josephson junction (JJ) [1-4]. Here we demonstrate Josephson phase modulation in van der Waals heterostructures when Cooper pairs from superconducting NbSe$_2$ tunnel through atomically thin magnetic insulator (MI) Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Employing a superconducting quantum interference device based on MI JJs, we probe a doubly degenerate non-trivial JJ phase ($ϕ$) origin…
We observe proximity-induced superconductivity in the \textit{in situ} prepared heterostructures constructed by topological insulator Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films and high-temperature cuprate superconductors Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$. The superconducting gap maximum is about 7.6 meV on the surface of Bi$_{2}$Te$_{3}$ thin films with a thickness of two quintuple layers, and the gap value decreases with an increase in the film thickness. Moreover, the quasiparticle interference data show a clear evidence of a twofold symmetric superconducting gap with gap minima along one pair of the pr…
We study non-equilibrium quantum transport of spin, heat, and charge in diffusive heterostructures including both superconductors and materials with spin-dependent fields, such as textured ferromagnets and spin-orbit coupled materials. Using the quasiclassical theory of superconductivity, we derive a general analytical formula for the zero-temperature charge conductance valid in the non-linear regime. The analytical results are in excellent agreement with previous numerical calculations at small but finite temperatures. We predict a strong deviation between the conductance spectra and local de…
We introduce a two-dimensional Chern insulator in proximity to a $d$-wave pseudogap state of the high-T$_c$ superconducting material as an effective platform to realize the higher order topological system. The proximity-induced $d$-density-wave (DDW) order in the Chern insulator layer serves as an effective mass. The edge states will be fully gapped by this DDW order. In the real space, the sign of the DDW order parameter changes at the system corners due to the $d$-wave factor, leading to the gapless corner states, indicating that this system may be in a higher order topological state. The hi…
We present the generalized quasiclassical theory of the long-range superconducting proximity effect in heterostructures with strong ferromagnets, where the exchange splitting is of the order of Fermi energy. In the ferromagnet the propagation of spin-triplet Cooper pairs residing on the spin-split Fermi surfaces is shown to be governed by the spin-dependent Abelian gauge field which results either from the spin-orbital coupling or from the magnetic texture. The additional gauge field enters into the quasiclassical equations in superposition with the usual electromagnetic vector potential and r…
We study the quantum many-body instabilities of interacting electrons with SU(2)$\times$SU(2) symmetry in spin and orbital degrees of freedom on the triangular lattice near van-Hove filling. Our work is motivated by effective models for the flat bands in hexagonal moiré heterostructures like twisted bilayer boron nitride and trilayer graphene-boron nitride systems. We consider an extended Hubbard model including onsite Hubbard and Hund's couplings, as well as nearest-neighbor exchange interactions and analyze the different ordering tendencies with the help of an unbiased functional renormaliza…
Superconductor/ferromagnet (S/F) proximity effect theory predicts that the superconducting critical temperature of the F1/F2/S or F1/S/F2 trilayers for the parallel orientation of the F1 and F2 magnetizations is smaller than for the antiparallel one. This suggests a possibility of a controlled switching between the superconducting and normal states in the S layer. Here, using the spin switch design F1/F2/S theoretically proposed by Oh et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 71, 2376 (1997)], that comprises a ferromagnetic bilayer separated by a non-magnetic metallic spacer layer as a ferromagnetic component…
We report the violation of the Pauli limit due to intrinsic spin-orbit coupling in SrTiO3 heterostructures. Via selective doping down to a few nanometers, a two-dimensional superconductor is formed, geometrically suppressing orbital pair-breaking. The spin-orbit scattering is exposed by the robust in-plane superconducting upper critical field, exceeding the Pauli limit by a factor of 4. Transport scattering times several orders of magnitude higher than for conventional thin film superconductors enables a new regime to be entered, where spin-orbit coupling effects arise non-perturbatively.
We present the Usadel theory describing the superconducting proximity effect in heterostructures with a half-metallic layer. It is shown that the full spin polarization inside the half-metals gives rise to the giant triplet spin-valve effect in superconductor (S) - ferromagnet (F) - half-metal (HM) trilayers as well as to the $φ_0$-junction formation in the S/F/HM/F/S systems. In addition, we consider the exactly solvable model of the S/F/HM trilayers of atomic thickness and demonstrate that it reproduces the main features of the spin-valve effect found within the Usadel approach. Our results …
We discuss how complex-oxide heterostructures that include high-Tc superconducting cuprates can be used to realize an array of sub-millimeter cavities that support Josephson plasmon polaritons. These cavities have several attractive features for new types of light matter interaction studies and we show that they promote "ultrastrong" coupling between THz frequency radiation and Josephson plasmons. Cavity electrodynamics of Josephson plasmons allows to manipulate the superconducting order-parameter phase coherence. As an example, we discuss how it could be used to cool superconducting phase flu…

In europium-based iron pnictides superconducting Fe-planes can be influenced by a Zeeman field originated from the neighboring Eu-planes. The field tends to induce spin-density waves with a ferromagnetic average which coexists with the superconducting order by forming complementary patterns of the superconducting and magnetic order parameters in a Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov phase and a two-dimensional textured-superconducting phase. The hard gap around the Fermi energy disappears in these fragile inhomogeneous superconducting states, which features, instead, V-shaped spin-resolved local …
