We have studied the momentum dependence of the energy gap of Bi2(Sr,R)2CuOy by angleresolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), particularly focusing on the difference between R=La and Eu. By comparing the gap function and characteristic temperatures between the two sets of samples, we show that there exist three distinct energy scales, Δpg, Δsc0, and Δeff sc0, which correspond to T* (pseudogap temperature), Tonset (onset temperature of fluctuating superconductivity), and Tc (critical temperature of coherent superconductivity). The results not only support the existence of a pseudogap state below T* that competes with superconductivity but also the duality of competition and superconducting fluctuation at momenta around the antinode below Tonset.
Meingast, et al. suggest that in YBCO the pseudogap is associated with preformed pairs. It is shown that in underdoped cuprates there is evidence for two pseudogaps, and superconducting fluctions terminate at the smaller pseudogap.
The single-particle excitations, which initiate the pseudogap in the cuprate superconductors at some temperature T^*, relate to specific local spectral features of resonant pairing, where charge carriers get momentarily trapped on dynamically deformable molecular Cu-O-Cu clusters. We show how those local excitations evolve into dispersive branches with a characteristic "S"-like shape for three-peak structured ingap excitations in the cuprates' pseudogap phase, when we consider a lattice of such clusters. This feature should be detectable in "momentum distribution curve" ARPES analysis.
We report on a direct test of pairing fluctuations in the pseudogap regime of underdoped superconducting cuprates using a Josephson junction. In this experiment, the coupling between a rigid superconducting pair field and pairing fluctuations produces a strong specific signature in the current-voltage characteristics. Our results show that fluctuations survive only close to Tc (T-Tc<15K) and therefore cannot be responsible for the opening of the pseudogap at high temperature.
The pseudogap is a key property of the cuprate superconductors, whose understanding should illuminate the pairing mechanism. Recent experimental data support a close connection between the pseudogap and an oxygen-driven C4 symmetry breaking within the CuO2 plane unit cell. We show by means of the theory of the order parameter phase fluctuations that the temperature of "closing" (or "opening") of the gap (and pseudogap) in the electron spectra of superconductors with anisotropic order parameter takes place within a finite temperature range. Every Fourier-component of the order parameter has its own critical temperature.
Motivated by a recent experiment by Bergeal et al., we reconsider incoherent pair tunneling in a cuprate junction formed from an optimally doped superconducting lead and an underdoped normal metallic lead. We study the impact of the pseudogap on the pair tunneling by describing fermions in the underdoped lead with a model self-energy that has been developed to reproduce photoemission data. It is argued that the dominant feature of the phase diagram of the high $T_c$ cuprates is the crossover to the pseudogap phase in the energy (temperature) region $E (T^*)$. We argue that this scale is determined by the effective antiferromagnetic interaction which we calculate to be $J_{eff} = J_{\rm superexchange} - xt$ where $x$ is the hole percentage and $t$ the hopping integral.
Using a scenario of a hybridized mixture of localized bipolarons and conduction electrons, we demonstrate for the latter the simultaneous appearance of a pseudogap and of strong incoherent contributions to their quasi-particle spectrum which arise from phonon shake-off effects. This can be traced back to temporarily fluctuating local lattice deformations, giving rise to a double-peak structure in the pair distribution function, which should be a key feature in testing the origin of these incoherent contributions, recently seen in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).

Planar oxygen nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxation and shift data from all cuprate superconductors available in the literature are analyzed. They reveal a temperature independent pseudogap at the Fermi surface, which increases with decreasing doping in family specific ways, i.e., for some materials the pseudogap is substantial at optimal doping while for others it is nearly closed at optimal doping. ARPES measurements on underdoped cuprates above the superconducting transition temperature exhibit the unique phenomenon of Fermi arcs, gapless arcs of Fermi surface around the nodal points of the superconducting gap, which terminate before reaching the antinodes. We show that this phenomenon is easily explained (including its temperature dependence and observed hole-electron asymmetry) as the natural consequence of a time-fluctuating d-wave gap.
We experimentally study transport and intrinsic tunneling characteristics of a single-layer cuprate Bi(2+x)Sr(2-y)CuO(6+delta) with a low superconducting critical temperature Tc < 4 K. It is observed that the superconducting energy, critical field and fluctuation temperature range are scaling down with Tc, while the corresponding pseudogap characteristics have the same order of magnitude as for high-Tc cuprates with 20 to 30 times higher Tc. The observed disparity of the superconducting and pseudogap scales clearly reveals their different origins.
The electronic structure of the high-T_c cuprates is studied on the basis of both "large-U" and "small-U" orbitals. A striped structure is obtained, and three types of carriers: polaron-like "stripons" carrying charge, "quasielectrons'' carrying charge and spin, and "svivons" carrying spin and lattice distortion. Anomalous properties of the cuprates and specifically their transport properties are derived. Evidence is presented from NMR 1/T1T and ARPES data for the sudden disappearance of 2D antiferromagnetic (AF) correlations in the lightly overdoped region (p=0.19) at the T=0 metal-insulator transition where the pseudogap energy falls to zero. AF fluctuations thus appear to be intimately associated with the pseudogap and serve primarily to weaken superconductivity, strongly reducing the condensation energy and superfluid density.

We calculate the diffusion thermoelectric power of high-Tc cuprates using the resonating-valence-bond spin-liquid model developed by Yang, Rice and Zhang (YRZ). In this model, reconstruction of the energy-momentum dispersion results in a pseudogap in the density of states that is heavily asymmetric about the Fermi level. The subsequent asymmetry in the spectral conductivity is found to account for the large magnitude and temperature dependence of the thermopower observed in underdoped cuprates. We show that a simple 2D electron system on a square lattice with hoping between more than nearest neighbors exhibits in the presence of electron spin exchange interaction properties strikingly similar to those observed in the underdoped cuprates It is a normal state pseudogap, its behaviour with doping and T, a form of the spectrum around (0,π) etc. The motor is the electronic topological transition which due to two-dimensionality gets new features with respect to well-studied 3D case.
We propose a hybridization phenomenology to describe the pseudogap state of the underdoped cuprates. We show how a momentum independent pseudogap opens asymmetrically from the Fermi-surface but symmetric to the zeroes of the hybridized bonding dispersion, which results in false d-wave characteristics of the pseudogap at the Fermi level. The asymmetric tunneling in cuprate superconductors is studied based on the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. We combine neutron scattering (INS) and NMR/NQR nuclear spin lattice relaxation rate data to deduce the existence of a new contribution to the magnetic response (dynamic susceptibility) in cuprate superconductors. This contribution, which has yet to be observed with INS, is shown to embody the magnetic pseudogap effects. As such, it explains the long-standing puzzle of pseudogap effects missing from cuprate INS data, dominated by stripe fluctuations, for the dynamic susceptibility at low energies. The evidence for the spin density wave (SDW) nature of the pseudogap in HTSC cuprates is presented from resistive and direct gap measurements (ARPES, tunneling experiments, etc.). Its d-wave symmetry mimics the symmetry of the order parameter measured in the SC state. The magnetic phase $H-T$ diagram for HTSC cuprates is formed. The possible influence of an additional (SDW) order parameter on the vortex structure in the applied magnetic field is analysed. The behavior is discussed in terms of itinerant electron systems with interplay between superconductivity and magnetism.
We derive the fermionic contribution to the longitudinal and Hall conductivities within a Kubo formalism, using a phenomenological Greens function which has been previously developed to describe photoemission data in the pseudogap phase of the cuprates. We find that the in-plane electrical and thermal conductivities are metallic-like, showing a universal limit behavior characteristic of a d-wave spectrum as the scattering rate goes to zero. Underdoped cuprates exhibit a normal-state pseudogap, and their spins and doped carriers tend to spatially separate into 1- or 2-D stripes. Some view these as central to superconductivity, others as peripheral and merely competing. Using La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$Cu$_{1-y}$Zn$_y$O$_4$ we show that an oxygen isotope effect in $T_c$ and in the superfluid density can be used to distinguish between the roles of stripes and pseudogap and also to detect the presence of impurity scattering. We conclude that stripes and pseudogap are distinct, and both compete and coexist with superconductivity.
A pairing gap and coherence are the two hallmarks of superconductivity. In a classical BCS superconductor they are established simultaneously at Tc. We present a model for the combined nematic and `smectic' or stripe-like orders seen in recent scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) experiments in cuprates. We model the stripe order as an electronic charge density wave with associated Peierls distortion -- a `Pomeranchuk wave'. Disorder restricts this primary order to nanoscale domains, while secondary coupling to strain generates nematic order with considerably longer range.
Using an energy-momentum dispersion for Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 obtained from angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy we show that the shrinking Fermi arc model of the pseudogap is inconsistent with Raman scattering below Tc and specific heat near T*. By simulating the quasiparticle energy dispersion curves we show that Fermi arcs are an artifact of a T-dependent scattering rate.
We propose a new approach to the pseudogap problem in cuprates. Hole-doped cuprates display a broad plateau in the susceptibility centered near $(π,π)$. Competition between the softening of different $q$-modes on this plateau leads to anomalously slow growth of magnetic correlations with reducing temperature -- i.e., extended ranges of short-range correlations. The plateau arises from competition between Fermi- surface nesting and a `hidden' Van Hove singularity (VHS) nesting, associated with a bulk contribution to the susceptibility. Within a two component approach to high Tc copper oxides including polaronic couplings, we identify the pseudogap phase as the onset of polaron ordering. This ordering persists in the superconducting phase. A huge isotope effect on the pseudogap onset temperature is predicted and in agreement with experimental data. The anomalous temperature dependence of the mean square copper oxygen ion displacement observed above, at and below Tc stems from an s-wave superconducting component of the order parameter, whereas a pure d-wave order parameter alone can be excluded.
To understand the interplay of d-wave superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in the cuprates, we consider a two-dimensional extended Hubbard model with nearest neighbor attractive interaction. After providing a brief genealogy of our recently proposed model for High-Tc cuprates, we investigate the details of the microscopic mechanism that produces an attractive interaction between neighboring holes. We show that a peculiar arrangement of the $p_x$ and $p_y$ oxygen orbitals makes the mutual magnetic interaction of the holes with the localized copper ions to produce a net attractive interaction between themselves, which is responsible for the emergence of a superconducting phase. We use Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) to study the relationship between the pseudogap, pairing and Fermi arcs in cuprates. High quality data measured over a wide range of dopings reveals a consistent picture of Fermiology and pairing in these materials. We propose a possible scenario for the new metallic conductivity of underdoped and optimally doped cuprates. Charge carriers are assumed to be large polarons which form a Fermi-liquid and Cooper-like pairs below a crossover tempurature $T^{\ast}$. We use the Boltzmann equation to calculate the conductivity of self-trapped carriers and the resistivity $ρ$ as a function of temperature and doping for different cuprates. We show that various anomalies in $ρ(T)$ below $T^{\ast}$ are caused by the competing Fermi-liquid and BCS-like precursor pairing effects. Our results for $ρ$ fit well with existi…
Analysis of the resistivity data recently reported by Kondo et al. [1] for (Bi,Pb)2(Sr,La)2CuO{6-delta} (Bi2201) single-crystals has been performed within our model developed to study pseudogap (PG) in high-Tc superconductors (HTS's). The model is based on an assumption of the existence of local pairs in HTS's at temperatures well above Tc. Comparative analysis of our results and results of ARPES experiments reported by Kondo et al. suggests the local pairs to be one of the possible reason of the PG formation.

We express the superconducting gap, $Δ(T)$, in terms of thermodynamic functions in both $s$- and d-wave symmetries. Applying to Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ and Y$_{0.8}$Ca$_{0.2}$Ba$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ we find that for all dopings $Δ(T)$ persists, as a partial gap, high above $T_c$ due to strong superconducting fluctuations. Therefore in general two gaps are present above $T_c$, the superconducting gap and the pseudogap, effectively reconciling two highly polarized views concerning pseudogap physics.
In this paper we deduce transport properties in the presence of a pseudogap associated with precursor superconductivity. Our theoretical analysis is based on the widely adopted self energy expression reflecting this normal state gap, which has appeared in interpretations of photoemission and in other experiments. Thus, it should be generally applicable. Here we address THz conductivity $σ(ω) = σ_1(ω) + i σ_2(ω)$ measurements in the underdoped high temperature superconductors and arrive at reasonable agreement between theory and recent experiment for both $σ_1$ and $σ_2$ above and below $T_c$.

We calculate the c-axis infrared conductivity $σ_c(ω)$ in underdoped cuprate superconductors for spinfluctuation exchange scattering within the CuO$_2$-planes including a phenomenological d-wave pseudogap of amplitude $E_g$. For temperatures decreasing below a temperature $T^* \sim E_g/2$, a gap for $ω< 2E_g$ develops in $σ_c(ω)$ in the incoherent (diffuse) transmission limit. The resistivity shows 'semiconducting' behavior, i.e. it increases for low temperatures above the constant behavior for $E_g=0$. A possible explanation for the existence of the cuprate "pseudogap" state is that it is a d-wave superconductor without quantum phase rigidity. Transport and thermodynamic studies provide compelling evidence that supports this proposal, but few spectroscopic explorations of it have been made. One spectroscopic signature of d-wave superconductivity is the particle-hole symmetric "octet" of dispersive Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference modulations. A consistent microscopic theory of pseudogap phenomena and novel Bose-liquid superconductivity (superfluidity) is presented, based on the fact that in high-$T_c$ cuprates and related systems the energy $\varepsilon_A$ of the effective attraction between fermions is comparable with their Fermi energy $\varepsilon_F$ and the bosonic Cooper pairs are formed above $T_c$ and then a part of such Cooper pairs condense into a Bose superfluid at $T_c$. One of the puzzling characteristics of the pseudogap phase of high-$T_c$ cuprates is the nodal-antinodal dichotomy. While the nodal quasiparticles have a Fermi liquid behaviour, the antinodal ones show non-Fermi liquid features and an associated pseudogap. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and electronic Raman scattering are two valuable tools which have shown universal features which are rather material-independent, and presumably intrinsic to the pseudogap phase.
