Transition metal dichalcogenides like 2H-NbSe2 in their two-dimensional (2D) form exhibit Ising superconductivity with the quasiparticle spins are firmly pinned in the direction perpendicular to the basal plane. This enables them to withstand exceptionally high magnetic fields beyond the Pauli limit for superconductivity. Using field-angle-resolved magnetoresistance experiments for fields rotated in the basal plane we investigate the field-angle dependence of the upper critical field (Hc2), which directly reflects the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter. We observe a six-fold nodal symmetry superposed on a two-fold symmetry. This agrees with theoretical predictions of a nodal topological superconducting phase near Hc2, together with a nematic superconducting state. We demonstrate that in NbSe2 such unconventional superconducting states can arise from the presence of several competing superconducting channels.
We study the character of an Ising nematic quantum phase transition (QPT) deep inside a d-wave superconducting state with nodal quasiparticles in a two-dimensional tetragonal crystal. We find that, within a 1/N expansion, the transition is continuous. To leading order in 1/N, quantum fluctuations enhance the dispersion anisotropy of the nodal excitations, and cause strong scattering which critically broadens the quasiparticle (qp) peaks in the spectral function, except in a narrow wedge in momentum space near the Fermi surface where the qp's remain sharp. We also consider the possible existenc…

We propose a platform to realize nodal topological superconductors in a superconducting monolayer of MoX$_2$ (X$=$S, Se, Te) using an in-plane magnetic field. The bulk nodal points appear where the spin splitting due to spin-orbit coupling vanishes near the $\pm \boldsymbol{K}$ valleys of the Brillouin zone, and are six or twelve per valley in total. In the nodal topological superconducting phase, the nodal points are connected by flat bands of zero-energy Andreev edge states. These flat bands, which are protected by chiral symmetry, are present for all lattice-termination boundaries except zi…
Unconventional superconductivity often intertwines with various forms of order, such as the "nematic" order which breaks the rotational symmetry of the lattice. Investigation of these ordered phases sheds crucial light on the superconductivity itself. Here we report a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) study on RbFe2As2, a heavily hole-doped Fe-based superconductor (FeSC). We observe significant symmetry breaking in its electronic structure and magnetic vortex which differentiates the (π, π) and (π, -π) directions of the unfolded Brillouin zone (BZ). It is thus a novel nematic…
Superconductivity in FeSe has recently attracted a great deal of attention because it emerges out of an electronic nematic state of elusive character. Here we study both the electronic normal state and the superconducting gap structure using heat-capacity measurements on high-quality single crystals. The specific-heat curve, from 0.4 K to Tc = 9.1 K, is found to be consistent with a recent gap determination using Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference [P. O. Sprau et al., Science 357, 75 (2017)], however only if nodes are introduced on either the electron or the hole Fermi-surface sheets. Our a…
We present a detailed analysis on the hopping between monolayer CuO$_2$ and bulk CuO$_2$ plane in the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrate. With a two-band model, we demonstrate that the nodeless gap can only exist when the hole concentration in monolayer CuO$_2$ plane is very large or very small. We argued that the possible phase separation may play important role in the recent experimental observation of nodeless gap.
There is now copious direct experimental evidence of various forms of (short-range) charge order in underdoped cuprate high temperature superconductors, and spectroscopic signatures of a nodal-antinodal dichotomy in the structure of the single-particle spectral functions. In this context, we analyze the Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum in a superconducting nematic glass. The coincidence of the superconducting "nodal points" and the nematic "cold-spots" on the Fermi surface naturally accounts for many of the most salient features of the measured spectral functions (from angle-resolved photoemi…
Recently, Ising superconductors which possess in-plane upper critical fields much larger than the Pauli limit field are under intense experimental study. Many monolayer or few layer transition metal dichalcogenides are shown to be Ising superconductors. In this work, we show that in a wide range of experimentally accessible regimes where the in-plane magnetic field is higher than the Pauli limit field but lower than $H_{c2}$, a 2H-structure monolayer NbSe$_2$ or simiarly TaS$_2$ becomes a nodal topological superconductor. The bulk nodal points appear on the $Γ- M$ lines of the Brillouin zone w…
In contrast to bulk FeSe, which exhibits nematic order and low temperature superconductivity, atomic layers of FeSe reverse the situation, having high temperature superconductivity appearing alongside a suppression of nematic order. To investigate this phenomenon, we study a minimal electronic model of FeSe, with interactions that enhance nematic fluctuations. This model is sign problem free, and is simulated using determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). We developed a DQMC algorithm with parallel tempering, which proves to be an efficient source of global updates and allows us to access the r…
A nematic quantum critical point is anticipated to exist in the superconducting dome of some high-temperature superconductors. The nematic order competes with the superconducting order and hence reduces the superconducting condensate at $T = 0$. Moreover, the critical fluctuations of nematic order can excite more nodal quasiparticles out of the condensate. We address these two effects within an effective field theory and show that superfluid density $ρ^s(T)$ and superconducting temperature $T_c$ are both suppressed strongly by the critical fluctuations. The strong suppression of superconductiv…
We perform a non-perturbative analysis of the strong interaction between gapless nodal fermions and the nematic order parameter in two-dimensional d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors. We predict that the critical nematic fluctuation can generate a dynamical nodal gap if the fermion flavor N is smaller than a threshold N_c. Such gap generation leads to an additional is-wave Cooper pairing instability, which induces a fully gapped d_{x^2-y^2}+is superconducting dome in the vicinity of the nematic quantum critical point. The opening of a dynamical gap has important consequences, including the saturation …
A d-wave high temperature cuprate superconductor exhibits a nematic ordering transition at zero temperature. Near the quantum critical point, the coupling between gapless nodal quasiparticles and nematic order parameter fluctuation can result in unusual behaviors, such as extreme anisotropy of fermion velocities. We study the disorder effect on the nematic quantum critical behavior and especially on the flow of fermion velocities. The disorders that couple to nodal quasiparticles are divided into three types: random mass, random gauge field, and random chemical potential. A renormalization gro…
A nodeless $d$-wave state is likely in superconducting monolayer FeSe on SrTiO$_3$. The lack of nodes is surprising but has been shown to be a natural consequence of the observed small interband spin-orbit coupling. Here we examine the evolution from a nodeless state to the nodal state as this spin-orbit coupling is increased from a topological perspective. We show that this evolution depends strongly on the orbital content of the superconducting degrees of freedom. In particular, there are two $d$-wave solutions, which we call orbitally trivial and orbitally nontrivial. In both cases, the nod…
We investigate the states of triplet pairing in a candidate nematic superconductor versus typical material parameters, using the mean field theory for two- and three-dimensional tight-binding models with local triplet pairing in the $E_u$ representation. In the two-dimensional model, the system favors the fully gapped chiral state for weaker warping or lower filling level, while a nodal and nematic $Δ_{4x}$ state is favorable for stronger warping or higher filling, with the $d$-vector aligned along the principle axis. In the presence of lattice distortion, relative elongation along one of the …
At the nematic quantum critical point that exists in the $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave superconducting dome of cuprates, the massless nodal fermions interact strongly with the quantum critical fluctuation of nematic order. We study this problem by means of renormalization group approach and show that, the fermion damping rate $\left|\mathrm{Im}Σ^R(ω)\right|$ vanishes more rapidly than the energy $ω$ and the quasiparticle residue $Z_f\rightarrow 0$ in the limit $ω\rightarrow 0$. The nodal fermions thus constitute an unconventional non-Fermi liquid that represents an even weaker violation of Fermi liquid t…
The pairing mechanism in different classes of correlated materials, including iron based superconductors, is still under debate. For FeSe monolayers, uniform nematic fluctuations have been shown in a lattice Monte Carlo study to play a potentially important role. Here, using dynamical mean field theory calculations for the same model system, we obtain a similar phase diagram and provide an alternative interpretation of the superconductivity in terms of local orbital fluctuations and phase rigidity. Our study clarifies the relation between the superconducting order parameter, superfluid stiffne…
Monolayer NbSe$_2$ is a nodal topological Ising superconductor at magnetic in-plane fields exceeding the Pauli limit, with nodal points strictly on high symmetry lines in the Brillouin zone. Here, we use a combined numerical and group-theoretical approach in real-space to characterize the unconventional superconducting state in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. Even with a conventional pairing interaction, the superconducting state is intrinsically parity-mixed and robust against on-site disorder. The interplay between the Zeeman magnetic field, strong spin-orbit interaction, and ele…
Distinguishing nodal and nonunitary superconductivity in quasiparticle interference of an Ising superconductor with Rashba spin-orbit coupling: an example of NbSe$_2$
To understand the recently observed high temperature superconductivity in the monolayer CuO$_2$ grown on the Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ substrates, we propose a two band model of the hybridized oxygen $p_x$ and $p_y$ orbitals with the proximity effect of the substrate. We demonstrate that both the nodal and nodeless d-wave superconducting states can be induced by the proximity effect, depending on the strengths of the pairing parameters.
We present a microscopic calculation of the phase diagram of the Ising superconductor NbSe$_{2}$ in presence of both in-plane magnetic field and Rashba spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Repulsive interactions lead to two distinct instabilities, in singlet- and triplet- interaction channels. While we recover the previously predicted nodal topological superconducting state in the absence of Rashba SOC at large magnetic field with six pairs of nodes along \(Γ\)-\(M\) lines, a finite Rashba SOC breaks the symmetry that protects these nodes and therefore generally lifts them, resulting in a topologically …
We study odd-parity nematic superconductivity in doped topological insulators in presence of surface magnetic impurities. The peculiar surface subgap spectrum, characterized by a Majorana flatband, nodal cones and the surface states of the parent topological insulator, gives rise to an overall ferromagnetic RKKY interactions between the surface impurities. An additional coupling between the impurities and a preemptive chiral order parameter promote a surface time-reversal symmetry breaking solution at the surface of the system. We discuss the relevant scenarios and suggest to engineer surface …
Three-component fermion beyond the conventional Dirac Weyl Majorana classification attracts extensive attentions recently and many efforts have been paid to explore their superconductivity. Based on first-principles calculations, we systematically investigate the electron-phonon coupling (EPC) in the three-component fermion materials WN, WC and TaN. The EPC in pristine and pressured WC and TaN are to small to induce superconductivity. Electron doping can efficiently enhance the EPC strength and the predicted Tcs reach the value of experiments. Upon 0.6 electron/unitcell doping, the EPC strengt…
We present a theory for the onset of spin density wave order in the superconducting ground state of the cuprates. We compute the scaling dimensions of allowed perturbations of a `relativistic' fixed point with O(4)xO(3) symmetry, including those associated with the fermionic nodal Bogoliubov quasiparticles. Analyses of up to six loops show that all perturbations with square lattice symmetry are likely irrelevant. We demonstrate that the fermion spectral functions are primarily damped by the coupling to fluctuations of a composite field with Ising nematic order. We also discuss the influence of…
Over the past few years Fe chalcogenides (FeSe/Te) have advanced to the forefront of Fe-based superconductors (FeBS) research. The most intriguing results thus far are for intercalated and monolayer FeSe, however experimental studies are still inconclusive. Yet, bulk FeSe itself remains an unusual case when compared with pnictogen-based FeBS, and may hold clues to understanding the more exotic FeSe-derivatives. The FeSe phase diagram is unlike the pnictides: the orthorhombic distortion, which is likely to be of a "spin-nematic" nature in numerous pnictides, is not accompanied by magnetic order…
We show theoretically that a heterostructure of monolayer FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ - a superconducting quantum spin Hall material - with a monolayer of FeTe - a bicollinear antiferromagnet - realizes a higher order topological superconductor phase characterized by emergent Majorana zero modes pinned to the sample corners. We provide a minimal effective model for this system, analyze the origin of higher order topology, and fully characterize the topological phase diagram. Despite the conventional s-wave pairing, we find rather surprising emergence of a novel topological nodal superconductor in the p…
Superconductivity is significantly enhanced in monolayer FeSe grown on SrTiO3, but not for multilayer films, in which large strength of nematicity develops. However, the link between the high-transition temperature superconductivity in monolayer and the correlation related nematicity in multilayer FeSe films is not well understood. Here, we use low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy to study few-layer FeSe thin films grown by molecular beam epitaxy. We observe an incommensurate long-range smectic phase, which solely appears in bilayer FeSe films. The smectic order still locally exists a…
FeSe exhibits a novel ground state in which superconductivity coexists with a nematic order in the absence of any long-range magnetic order. Here we report an angle-resolved photoemission study on the superconducting gap structure in the nematic state of FeSe$_{0.93}$S$_{0.07}$, without the complication caused by Fermi surface reconstruction induced by magnetic order. We found that the superconducting gap shows a pronounced 2-fold anisotropy around the elliptical hole pocket near the Z point of the Brillouin zone, with gap minima at the endpoints of its major axis, while no detectable gap was …
We review all symmetry-allowed spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconducting (SC) order parameters in graphene ($s$-wave, $d$-wave, $p$-wave, and $f$-wave) generated by generic onsite, nearest-neighbor (NN), and next-to-nearest-neighbor (NNN) pairing interactions in a tight-binding model. For each pairing channel, we calculate both the band structure and the dependence of the density of states on energy, chemical potential, and on the pairing strength. In particular, we distinguish between nodal superconducting states and fully gapped states and study the dependence of gap closing points on th…
We investigate the competition between d-wave superconductivity and nematic order in high-$T_c$ superconductor, and examine the role played by gapless fermionic degrees of freedom. Apart from the competitive interaction with the superconducting order parameter, the nematic order parameter couples strongly to gapless nodal quasiparticles. The interplay of these two kinds of interactions is analyzed by means of renormalization group method. In case the fermionic degree of freedom are entirely neglected, the competitive interaction between two bosonic order parameters is strongly relevant, and ca…
We study theoretically the topological surface states (TSSs) and the possible surface Andreev bound states (SABSs) of Cu$_{x}$Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ which is known to be a topological insulator at $x=0$. The superconductivity (SC) pairing of this compound is assumed to have the broken spin-rotation symmetry, similar to that of the A-phase of $^{3}$He as suggested by recent nuclear-magnetic resonance experiments. For both spheroidal and corrugated cylindrical Fermi surfaces with the hexagonal warping terms, we show that the bulk SC gap is rather anisotropic; the minimum of the gap is negligibly small…
FeSe is a unique member of the family of iron-based superconductors, not only because of the high values of $T_{c}$ in FeSe monolayer, but also because in bulk FeSe superconductivity emerges inside a nematic phase without competing with long-range magnetic order. Near $T_{c}$, superconducting order necessarily has $s+d$ symmetry, because nematic order couples linearly the $s$-wave and $d$-wave harmonics of the superconducting order parameter. Here we argue that the near-degeneracy between $s$-wave and $d$-wave pairing instabilities in FeSe, combined with the sign-change of the nematic order pa…
We show that electron-phonon coupling can induce strong electron pairing in an FeSe monolayer on a SrTiO3 substrate (experimental indications for superconducting Tc are between 65 and 109K). The role of the SrTiO3 substrate in increasing the coupling is two-fold. First, the interaction of the FeSe and TiO2 terminated face of SrTiO3 prevents the FeSe monolayer from undergoing a shear-type (orthorhombic, nematic) structural phase transition. Second, the substrate allows an anti-ferromagnetic ground state of FeSe which opens electron-phonon coupling channels within the monolayer that are prevente…
Monolayer superconducting transition metal dichalcogenide NbSe$_2$ is a candidate for a nodal topological superconductor by magnetic field. Because of the so-called Ising spin-orbit coupling that strongly pins the electron spins to the out-of-plane direction, Cooper pairs in monolayer superconductor NbSe$_2$ are protected against an applied in-plane magnetic field much larger than the Pauli limit. In monolayer NbSe$_2$, in addition to the Fermi pockets at the corners of Brillouin zone with opposite crystal momentum similar to other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, there is an e…
Recently it was discovered that superconductivity in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is strongly affected by an out-of-plane spin-orbit coupling (SOC). In addition, new techniques of fabricating 2d ferromagnets on van der Waals materials are rapidly emerging. Combining these breakthroughs, we propose a realization of nodal topological superconductivity in TMDs by fabricating nanostructured ferromagnets with an in-plane magnetization on the top surface. The proposed procedure does not require application of external magnetic fields and applies to monolayer and multilayer (bulk) systems.…
The origin of the high-temperature superconducting state observed in FeSe thin films, whose phase diagram displays no sign of magnetic order, remains a hotly debated topic. Here we investigate whether fluctuations arising due to the proximity to a nematic phase, which is observed in the phase diagram of this material, can promote superconductivity. We find that nematic fluctuations alone promote a highly degenerate pairing state, in which both $s$-wave and $d$-wave symmetries are equally favored, and $T_{c}$ is consequently suppressed. However, the presence of a sizable spin-orbit coupling or …
We consider the most energetically favorable symmetry-allowed spin-singlet and spin-triplet superconducting pairing symmetries in monolayer and few-layer graphene, and for each calculate the energy spectrum in the presence of a scalar or magnetic impurity. We find that two doubly degenerate subgap states exist for scalar impurities for all types of pairing, except for the spin-singlet $s$-wave state. For magnetic impurities, two or four subgap states may form depending on the order parameter symmetry. We find that the spin polarization of these states allows one to distinguish between spin-sin…
Spontaneous symmetry breaking has been a paradigm to describe the phase transitions in condensed matter physics. In addition to the continuous electromagnetic gauge symmetry, an unconventional superconductor can break discrete symmetries simultaneously, such as time reversal and lattice rotational symmetry. In this work we report a characteristic in-plane 2-fold behaviour of the resistive upper critical field and point-contact spectra on the superconducting semimetal PbTaSe2 with topological nodal-rings, despite its hexagonal lattice symmetry (or D_3h in bulk while C_3v on surface, to be preci…
Superconductivity originates from pairing of electrons. Pairing channel on Fermi surface and pairing glue are thus two pivotal issues for understanding a superconductor. Recently, high-temperature superconductivity over 40 K was found in electron-doped FeSe superconductors including K$_x$Fe$_{2-y}$Se$_2$, Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe, and 1 monolayer FeSe thin film. However, their pairing mechanism remains controversial. Here, we studied the systematic evolution of electronic structure in potassium-coated FeSe single crystal. The doping level is controlled precisely by in situ evaporating potass…
Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) offer a unique platform to study unconventional superconductivity, owing to the presence of strong spin-orbit coupling and a remarkable stability to an in-plane magnetic field. A recent study found that when an in-plane field applied to a superconducting monolayer TMD is increased beyond the Pauli critical limit, a quantum phase transition occurs into a topological nodal superconducting phase which hosts Majorana flat bands. We study the current-phase relation of this nodal superconductor in a Josephson junction geometry. We find that the nodal supercond…
A recent experiment on Nb-doped Bi2Se3 showed that zero field magnetization appears below the superconducting transition temperature. This gives evidence that the superconducting state breaks time-reversal symmetry spontaneously and possibly be in the chiral topological phase. This is in sharp contrast to the Cu-doped case which is possibly in the nematic phase and breaks rotational symmetry spontaneously. By deriving the free energy of the system from a microscopic model, we show that the magnetic moments of the Nb atoms can be polarized by the chiral Cooper pairs and enlarge the phase space …
Twisted bilayers of nodal superconductors were recently proposed as a promising platform to host superconducting phases that spontaneously break time-reversal symmetry. Here we extend this analysis to twisted multilayers, focusing on two high-symmetry stackings with alternating ($\pm θ$) and constant ($θ$) twist angles. In analogy to alternating-twist multilayer graphene, the former can be mapped to twisted bilayers with renormalized interlayer couplings, along with a remnant gapless monolayer when the number of layers $L$ is odd. In contrast, the latter exhibits physics beyond twisted bilayer…
Performing a leading-order renormalization group analysis, here we compute the effects of generic local or short-range electronic interactions in monolayer and Bernal bilayer graphene. Respectively in these two systems chiral quasiparticles display linear and biquadratic band touching, leading to linearly vanishing and constant DOS. Consequently, the former system remains stable for weak enough local interactions, and supports a variety of ordered phases only beyond a critical strength of interactions. By contrast, ordered phases can nucleate for sufficiently weak interactions in bilayer graph…
Ferromagnetism and superconductivity are generally considered to be antagonistic phenomena in condensed matter physics. Here, we theoretically study the interplay between the ferromagnetic and superconducting orders in a recent discovered monolayered CoSb superconductor with an orthorhombic symmetry and net magnetization, and demonstrate the pairing symmetry of CoSb as a candidate of non-unitary superconductor with time-reversal symmetry breaking. By performing the group theory analysis and the first-principles calculations, the superconducting order parameter is suggested to be a triplet pair…

We propose an SU(4) spin-valley-fermion model to investigate the superconducting instabilities of twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). In this approach, bosonic fluctuations associated with an emergent SU(4) symmetry, corresponding to combined rotations in valley and spin spaces, couple to the low-energy fermions that comprise the flat bands. These fluctuations are peaked at zero wave-vector, reflecting the "ferromagnetic-like" SU(4) ground state recently found in strong-coupling solutions of microscopic models for TBG. Focusing on electronic states related to symmetry-imposed points of the Fermi s…
Under what conditions does a superconductor inherit topologically protected nodes from its parent normal state? In the context of Weyl semimetals with broken time-reversal symmetry, the pairing order parameter is classified by monopole harmonics and necessarily nodal [Li and Haldane, Phys. Rev. Lett., 120, 067003 (2018)]. Here, we show that a similar conclusion could also apply to 2D Dirac semimetals, although the conditions for the existence of nodes are more complex, depending on the pairing matrix structure in the valley and sublattice space. We analytically and numerically analyze the Bogo…
Magnet$/$superconductor hybrids (MSHs) hold the promise to host emergent topological superconducting phases. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) magnetic systems in proximity to s-wave superconductors have shown evidence of gapped topological superconductivity with zero-energy end states and chiral edge modes. Recently, it was proposed that the bulk transition-metal dichalcogenide 4Hb$-$TaS$_2$ is a gapless topological nodal-point superconductor (TNPSC). However, there has been no experimental realization of a TNPSC in a MSH system yet. Here we present the discovery of TNPSC in …
Motivated by the strong, low temperature damping of nodal quasiparticles observed in some cuprate superconductors, we study quantum phase transitions in d_{x^2-y^2} superconductors with a spin-singlet, zero momentum, fermion bilinear order parameter. We present a complete, group-theoretic classification of such transitions into 7 distinct cases (including cases with nematic order) and analyze fluctuations by the renormalization group. We find that only 2, the transitions to d_{x^2-y^2}+is and d_{x^2-y^2} + i d_{xy} pairing, possess stable fixed points with universal damping of nodal quasiparti…
