A new kind of mechanism of lasing is investigated experimentally. It is quite different from the traditional laser with cavity and the random laser with random scattering. In this mechanism, the intensity-dependent refractive index effect and thermal lensing effects of the pump beam induce a large gradient of the refractive index in the gain material, which forms a passive equivalent boundary that provides the feedback in the lasing system. A real lasing system, a liquid disk laser, is performed, it achieves 2-D omnidirectional radiation with a high efficiency of 28%, its radiation spectral property can be explained by resonant Raman scattering.
Single-mode operation is a desirable but elusive property for lasers operating at high pump powers. Typically, single-mode lasing is attainable close to threshold, but increasing the pump power gives rise to multiple lasing peaks due to inter-modal gain competition. We propose a laser with the opposite behavior: multi-mode lasing occurs at low output powers, but pumping beyond a certain value produces a single lasing mode, with all other candidate modes experiencing negative effective gain. This behavior arises in a lattice of coupled optical resonators with non-fine-tuned asymmetric couplings…
We simulate the pump-probe experiments of lasing in molecular nitrogen ions with particular interest on the effects of rotational wave-packet dynamics. Our computations demonstrate that the coherent preparation of rotational wave packets in N$_2^+$ by an intense short non-resonant pulse results in a modulation of the subsequent emission from $B^2Σ_u^+ \rightarrow X^2Σ_g^+$ transitions induced by a resonant seed pulse. We model the dynamics of such pumping and emission using density matrix theory to describe the N$_2^+$ dynamics and the Maxwell wave equation to model the seed pulse propagation.…
The simultaneous existence of coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing is one of the most intriguing features of non-Hermitian photonics. However, the link between CPA lasing and PT symmetry breaking at the exceptional point (EP) needs clarification. In this paper, we study the manifestations of the CPA-laser effect in a PT-symmetric multilayer loss-gain structure using both the transfer-matrix method and numerical simulations of the Maxwell-Bloch equations. We show that the maximal contrast between absorption and amplification at different phase relations between the input waves is reache…
In a non-Hermitian optical system with loss and gain, an exceptional point (EP) will arise under specific parameters where the eigenvalues and eigenstates exhibit simultaneous coalescence. Here we report a dynamical switching of lasing behavior in a non-Hermitian system composed of coupled microcavities by modulating the EPs. Utilizing the effect of gain, loss and coupling on the eigenstates of coupled microcavities, the evolution path of the eigenvalues related to the laser emission characteristics can be modulated. As a result, the lasing emission property of the coupled cavities exhibits an…
We theoretically and numerically investigate the scattering behavior of a periodic parity-time (PT)-symmetric waveguide network composed of a finite number of unit cells. Specifically, we put forward rigorous and formally exact expressions for wave propagation, bi-directional reflectionless, and coherent perfect absorption and lasing (CPAL) occuring in a finite periodic optical waveguide network. Through the use of the generalized parametric space derived from observation of PT-symmetric transfer matrix, Lorentz reciprocity theorem and non-imaginary Bloch phase, we observe that when the unit c…
We report on lasing at visible wavelengths in arrays of ferromagnetic Ni nanodisks overlaid with an organic gain medium. We demonstrate that by placing an organic gain material within the mode volume of the plasmonic nanoparticles both the radiative and, in particular, the high ohmic losses of Ni nanodisk resonances can be compensated. Under increasing pump fluence, the systems exhibit a transition from lattice-modified spontaneous emission to lasing, the latter being characterized by highly directional and sub-nanometer linewidth emission. By breaking the symmetry of the array, we observe tun…
In comparison with conventional lasers, topological lasers are more robust and can be immune to disorder or de-fects if lasing occurs in topologically protected states. Previously reported topological lasers were almost exclu-sively based on the first-order photonic topological insulators. Here, we show that lasing can be achieved in the zero-dimensional corner state in a second-order photonic topological insulator, which is based on Kagome wave-guide array with a rhombic configuration. If gain is present in the corner of the structure, where topological corner state resides, stable lasing in …
Non-Hermitian photonic systems with loss and gain attract much attention due to their exceptional abilities in molding the flow of light. Introducing asymmetry to the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric system with perfectly balanced loss and gain, we reveal the mechanism of transition from the quasibound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) to the simultaneous coherent perfect absorption (CPA) and lasing in a layered structure comprising epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) media. Two types of asymmetry (geometric and non-Hermitian) are analyzed with the scattering matrix technique. The effect of the CPA-lasing associ…
A theory of lasing in an optically thin layer of active centers disposed at a metal surface is developed from first principles. The approach is based on a rigorous account of the local field in a close vicinity of a reflective surface which provides a feedback for dipole oscillations in active centers. It is demonstrated that the gain medium thickness plays a crucial role in the lasing condition and controls a switching from conventional lasing to lasing without inversion. The numerical calculations are carried out for erbium doped glass bordering a gold surface where radiation at telecom wave…
Recently, optical bound states in continuum in various passive photonic crystals have been identified and similar structures incorporated with optical gain have been reported to exhibit lasing. However, no explicit control over the type of lasing BIC has been reported. In this work, we utilize all four fundamental BICs related to the lowest energy Gamma-point of a square photonic crystal lattice. We identify the associated topological charges from experimentally obtained dispersions, finite element method simulations, as well as from spherical decomposition method based on the microscopic pola…
The CPA-laser is a coexisting state of coherent perfect absorption and lasing that was proposed in parity-time ($\cal PT$) symmetric photonic systems. In this work we show that the spectral signature of a CPA-laser displayed by the singular value spectrum of the scattering matrix ($S$) can be orders of magnitude wider than that displayed by the eigenvalue spectrum of $S$. Since the former reflects how strongly light can be absorbed or amplified and the latter announces the spontaneous symmetry breaking of $S$, these contrasting spectral signatures indicate that near perfect absorption and extr…

We propose an incident direction independent wave propagation generated by properly assembling different unidirectional destructive interferences (UDIs), which is a consequence of the appropriate match between synthetic magnetic fluxes and the incident wave vector. Single-direction lasing at spectral singularity is feasible without introducing nonlinearity. UDI allows unidirectional lasing and unidirectional perfect absorption; when they are combined in a parity-time symmetric manner, the spectral singularities vanish with bounded reflections and transmissions. Furthermore, the simultaneous un…
In standard lasers, light amplification requires population inversion between an upper and a lower state to break the reciprocity between absorption and stimulated emission. However, in a medium prepared in a specific superposition state, quantum interference may fully suppress absorption while leaving stimulated emission intact, opening the possibility of lasing without inversion. Here we show that lasing without inversion arises naturally during propagation of intense femtosecond laser pulses in air. It is triggered by the combination of molecular ionization and molecular alignment, both una…
Here we report a random lasing based sensor which shows pH sensitivity exceeding by 2-orders of magnitude that of a conventional fluorescence sensor. We explain the sensing mechanism as related to gain modifications and lasing threshold nonlinearities. A dispersive diffusive lasing theory matches well the experimental results, and allow us to predict the optimal sensing conditions and a maximal sensitivity as large as 200 times that of an identical fluorescence-based sensor. The simplicity of operation and high sensitivity make it promising for future biosensing applications.
The ability to control the laser modes within a subwavelength resonator is of key relevance in modern optoelectronics. This work deals with the theoretical research on optical properties of a PT--symmetric nano--scaled dimer formed by two dielectric wires, one is with loss and the other with gain, wrapped with graphene sheets. We show the existence of two non--radiating trapped modes which transform into radiating modes by increasing the gain--loss parameter. Moreover, these modes reach the lasing condition for suitable values of this parameter, a fact that makes these modes to achieve an ultr…
Harmonic frequency combs, in which the lasing modes are separated by a period of tens of free spectral ranges from each other, have been recently discovered in quantum cascade lasers (QCLs). There is an ongoing debate how the harmonic combs can be formed and stable under continuous pumping. Here we reproduce the harmonic state of lasing in QCLs by space-time-domain numerical simulations and show that the corresponding optical wave has a frequency-modulated (FM) nature, with the fundamental beat note in the electron population being suppressed. To understand the physics behind the formation and…
In sufficiently strong scattering media, light transport is suppressed and modes are exponentially localized. Anderson-like localized states have long been recognized as potential candidate for high-Q optical modes for low-threshold, cost effective random lasers. Operating in this regime remains however a challenge since Anderson localization is difficult to achieve in optics and nonlinear mode interaction compromise its observation. Here, we exhibit individually each lasing mode of a low-dimension solid-state random laser by applying a non-uniform optical gain. By undoing gain competition and…
Random lasers are unique systems where lasing occurs due to repetitive scattering in a disordered nanostructure. Previous descriptions of random lasing are numerous, however a full time-dependent theory that describes the introduction of gain directly from first principles is lacking in the literature. This letter will present an analytic self-consistent time-dependent theory of random lasing that contains the results from the well-known steady-state ab-initio laser theory. This theory can also describe a number of temporal phenomena that have been observed in previous experiments and facilita…
