The ability to control the laser modes within a subwavelength resonator is of key relevance in modern optoelectronics. This work deals with the theoretical research on optical properties of a PT--symmetric nano--scaled dimer formed by two dielectric wires, one is with loss and the other with gain, wrapped with graphene sheets. We show the existence of two non--radiating trapped modes which transform into radiating modes by increasing the gain--loss parameter. Moreover, these modes reach the lasing condition for suitable values of this parameter, a fact that makes these modes to achieve an ultra high quality factor that is manifested on the response of the structure when it is excited by a plane wave. Unlike other mechanism that transform trapped modes into radiating modes, we show that the variation of gain--loss parameter in the balanced loss--gain structure here studied leads to a variation in the phase difference between induced dipole moments on each wires, without appreciable variation in the modulus of these dipole moments. We provide an approximated method that reproduces the main results provided by the rigorous calculation. Our theoretical findings reveal the possibility to develop unconventional optical devices and structures with enhanced functionality.
On-chip light sources are critical for the realization of fully integrated photonic circuitry. So far, semiconductor miniaturized lasers have been mainly limited to sizes on the order of a few microns. Further reduction of sizes is challenging fundamentally due to the associated radiative losses. While using plasmonic metals helps to reduce radiative losses and sizes, they also introduce Ohmic losses hindering real improvements. In this work, we show that, making use of quasi-bound states in the continuum, or supercavity modes, we circumvent these fundamental issues and realize the smallest pu…
Plasmonic nanolasers have ultrahigh lasing thresholds, especially those devices for which all three dimensions are truly subwavelength. Because of a momentum mismatch between the propagating light and localized optical field of the subwavelength nanocavity, poor optical pumping efficiency is another important reason for the ultrahigh threshold but is normally always ignored. Based on a cavity-embedded nanoantenna array design, we demonstrate a room-temperature low-threshold plasmonic nanolaser that is robust, reproducible, and easy-to-fabricate using chemical-template lithography. The mode vol…
We demonstrate theoretically that a subwavelength spherical dielectric nanoparticle coated with a gain shell forms a nanolaser. Lasing modes of such a nanolaser are associated with the Mie resonances of the nanoparticle. We establish a general condition for the lasing threshold and show that the use of high refractive index dielectric media allows for lasing with a threshold significantly lower than that for nanolasers incorporating lossy plasmonic metals.
Recent years have witnessed growing interest in the development of small-footprint lasers for potential applications in small-volume sensing and on-chip optical communications. Surface-plasmons, electromagnetic modes evanescently confined to metal-dielectric interfaces, offer an effective route to achieving lasing at nanometer-scale dimensions when resonantly amplified in contact with a gain-medium. Here, we achieve visible frequency ultra-narrow linewidth lasing at room-temperature by leveraging surface plasmons propagating in an open Fabry-Perot cavity formed by a flat metal surface coated w…
The strong electric and magnetic resonances in dielectric subwavelength structures have enabled unique opportunities for efficient manipulation of light-matter interactions. Besides, the dramatic enhancement of nonlinear light-matter interactions near so-called bound states in the continuum (BICs) has recently attracted enormous attention due to potential advancements in all-optical and quantum computing. However, the experimental realizations and the applications of high- Q factor resonances in dielectric resonances in the visible regime have thus far been considerably limited. In this work, …
Conventional nano-photonic schemes minimise multiple scattering to realise a miniaturised version of beam-splitters, interferometers and optical cavities for light propagation and lasing. Here instead, we introduce a nanophotonic network built from multiple paths and interference, to control and enhance light-matter interaction via light localisation. The network is built from a mesh of subwavelength waveguides, and can sustain localised modes and mirror-less light trapping stemming from interference over hundreds of nodes. With optical gain, these modes can easily lase, reaching $\sim$100 pm …
Recently emerged dielectric resonators and metasurfaces offer a low-loss platform for efficient manipulation of electromagnetic waves from microwave to visible. Such flat meta-optics can focus electromagnetic waves, generate structured beams and vortices, enhance local fields for sensing as well as provide additional functionalities for advanced MRI machinery. Recent advances are associated with exotic optical modes called bound states in the continuum, which can give rise to extremely large quality factors and supercavity lasing. Here, we experimentally demonstrate subwavelength active superc…
Integrated optomechanical cavities stand as a promising means to interface mechanical motion and guided optical modes. State-of-the-art demonstrations rely on optical and mechanical modes tightly confined of in micron-scale areas to achieve strong optomechanical coupling. However, the need for tight optomechanical confinement and the general use of suspended devices hinders interaction with external devices, limiting the potential for the implementation of complex circuits. Here, we propose and demonstrate a new approach for optomechanical cavities coupling free-propagating surface acoustic wa…

Laser science has tackled physical limitations to achieve higher power, faster and smaller light sources. The quest for ultra-compact laser that can directly generate coherent optical fields at the nano-scale, far beyond the diffraction limit of light, remains a key fundamental challenge. Microscopic lasers based on photonic crystals, micro-disks, metal clad cavities and nanowires can now reach the diffraction limit, which restricts both the optical mode size and physical device dimension to be larger than half a wavelength. While surface plasmons are capable of tightly localizing light, ohmic…
For dielectric multilayered metamaterials, the effective-parameter representation is known to be insensitive to geometrical features occurring at deeply subwavelength scales. However, recent studies on periodic and aperiodically ordered geometries have shown the existence of certain critical parameter regimes where this conventional wisdom is upended, as the optical response of finite-size samples may depart considerably from the predictions of standard effective-medium theory. In these regimes, characterized by a mixed evanescent/propagating light transport, different classes of spatial (dis)…

In order to construct a dielectric analog of spaser, we study theoretically and experimentally several configurations of cluster-based unit cells for an all-dielectric metasurface characterized by resonant conditions of the trapped mode excitation. Excitation of the trapped mode is realized by either specific displacement of particles in the cluster, or perturbation of the equidistantly spaced particles by off-centered round holes or coaxial-sector notches. It turns out that the latter approach is more advantageous for enhancement of electric near-field with homogeneous distribution in-plane o…
Defect modes in two-dimensional periodic photonic structures have found use in a highly diverse set of optical devices. For example, photonic crystal cavities confine optical modes to subwavelength volumes and can be used for Purcell enhancement of nonlinearity, lasing, and cavity quantum electrodynamics. Photonic crystal fiber defect cores allow for supercontinuum generation and endlessly-single-mode fibers with large cores. However, these modes are notoriously fragile: small changes in the structure can lead to significant detuning of resonance frequency and mode volume. Here, we show that a…
