We obtain constraints on the mixing of vector-like quarks coupling predominantly to the third generation. We consider all (seven) relevant types of vector-like quarks, individually. The constraints are derived from oblique corrections and Z -> b bbar measurements at LEP and SLC. We investigate the implications of these constraints on LHC phenomenology, concerning the decays of the heavy quarks and their single production. We also explore indirect effects of heavy quark mixing in top and bottom couplings. A remarkable effect is the possibility of explaining the anomalous forward-backward asymmetry in Z -> b bbar at LEP, with a hypercharge -5/6 doublet. We also study the impact of the new quarks on single Higgs production at the LHC and Higgs decay.
The dark photon is a massive hypothetical particle that interacts with the Standard Model by kinetically mixing with the visible photon. For small values of the mixing parameter, dark photons can evade cosmological bounds to be a viable dark matter candidate. Due to the similarities with the electromagnetic signals generated by axions, several bounds on dark photon signals are simply reinterpretations of historical bounds set by axion haloscopes. However, the dark photon has a property that the axion does not: an intrinsic polarisation. Due to the rotation of the Earth, accurately accounting f…
The vector meson $ω$-$ϕ$ mixing is studied in two alternative scenarios with different numbers of mixing angles, i.e., the one-mixing-angle scenario and the two-mixing-angle scenario, in both the octect-singlet mixing scheme and the quark flavor mixing scheme. Concerning the reproduction of experimental data and the $Q^2$ behavior of transition form factors, one-mixing-angle scenario in the quark flavor scheme performs better than that in the octet-singlet scheme, while the two-mixing-angle scenario works well for both mixing schemes. The difference between the two mixing angles in the octet-s…
Starting from a new zeroth order basis for quark mixing (CKM) matrix based on the quark-lepton complementarity and the tri-bimaximal pattern of lepton mixing, we derive a triminimal parametrization of CKM matrix with three small angles and a CP-violating phase as its parameters. This new triminimal parametrization has the merits of fast convergence and simplicity in application. With the quark-lepton complementary relations, we derive relations between the two unified triminimal parametrizations for quark mixing obtained in this work and for lepton mixing obtained by Pakvasa-Rodejohann-Weiler.…
We argue why vector-like quarks are usually expected to mix predominantly with the third generation, and discuss about the expected size of this mixing and its naturalness.
Flavor physics is about particle mass-degeneracy-deviations (DMD) and mixing and especially about hierarchies of those deviations. On the one hand there is no established theory of particle flavor at present; on the other hand there are growing data indications on interesting empirical flavor regularities that are described here by two semi-empirical rules: quadratic DMD-hierarchy and Dirac-Majorana DMD-duality rules. First rule unites neutrino solar-atmospheric hierarchy parameter with charged lepton (CL) and quark mass-ratio hierarchies and simultaneously unites the hierarchies in the mixing…
Parametrization of the quark and lepton mixing matrices is the first attempt to understand the mixing of fermions. In this work, we parameterize the quark and lepton matrices with the help of quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) in a tri-bimaximal pattern of lepton mixing matrix. In this way, we combine the parametrization of the two matrices with each other. We apply this new parametrization to several physical quantities, and show its simplicity in the expression of, e.g., the Jarlskog parameter of CP violation.
The "texture zero mass matrices" for the quarks and leptons describe very well the flavor mixing of the quarks and leptons. We can calculate the angles of the unitarity triangle. We expect the angle alpha of the unitarity triangle to be 90 degrees. The masses of the neutrinos can be calculated - they are very small, the largest neutrino mass is 0.05 eV. We calculated the matrix element of the mixing matrix, relevant for the reactor mixing angle. It can be measured in the near future in the DAYA BAY experiment.
The origin of small mixing among the quarks and a large mixing among the neutrinos has been an open question in particle physics. In order to answer this question, we postulate general relations among the quarks and the leptonic mixing angles at a high scale, which could be the scale of Grand Unified Theories. The central idea of these relations is that the quark and the leptonic mixing angles can be unified at some high scale either due to some quark-lepton symmetry or some other underlying mechanism and as a consequence, the mixing angles of the leptonic sector are proportional to that of th…
We propose a new relation between quark mixing matrix and lepton mixing matrix. Since the parameters in the quark sector are well determined, we employ them to describe the mixing of leptons. Phenomenologically, we study the neutrino oscillation probabilities for different channels, which can be measured precisely in forthcoming reactor and accelerator experiments. As an example of the applicability of our assumption, CP violation in the lepton sector is also discussed. In the latest T2K experiment, the range of the mixing angle $θ_{13}$ is measured, and our prediction of $θ_{13}$ is compatibl…
A brief overview of flavour-changing phenomena is presented. The main topics discussed are the universality and Lorentz structure of the leptonic charged-current couplings, our present knowledge of the quark-mixing matrix and the future prospects for CP--violation studies.
We calculate the quark flavor mixing matrix $V$ based on the Hermitian quark mass matrices $M^{}_{\rm u}$ and $M^{}_{\rm d}$ with vanishing $(1,1)$, $(1,3)$ and $(3,1)$ entries. The popular leading-order prediction $|V^{}_{ub}/V^{}_{cb}| \simeq \sqrt{m^{}_u/m^{}_c}$ is significantly modified, and the result agrees with the current experimental value. We find that behind the strong {\it mass} hierarchy of up- or down-type quarks is the weak {\it texture} hierarchy of $M^{}_{\rm u}$ or $M^{}_{\rm d}$ characterized by an approximate seesaw-like relation among its $(2,2)$, $(2,3)$ and $(3,3)$ elem…
We examine experimental constraints on scharm-stop flavor mixing in the minimal supersymmetric standard model, which arise from the experimental bounds on squark and Higgs boson masses, the precision measurements of W-boson mass and the effective weak mixing angle, as well as the experimental data on B_s-\bar B_s mixing and b -> s gamma. We find that the combined analysis can put rather stringent constraints on \tilde{c}_L-\tilde{t}_L and \tilde{c}_L-\tilde{t}_R mixings. As an illustration for the effects of such constraints, we examine various top-quark flavor-changing neutral-current process…
Three schemes of quark mixings (oscillations) together with their mixing matrices (analogous to Kabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrices) are considered. In these schemes quark transitions are virtual since quark masses are different. Two of them belong to the so called mass mixing schemes (mixing parameters are expressed by elements of mass matrices) and the third scheme belongs to the charge mixings one (mixing parameters are expressed through charges). For these schemes the expressions for transition probabilities between $d, s, b$ quarks are obtained. The analysis of situation with the quark mix…
It is shown that phenomenologically favorable expressions of quark mixing angles through the ratios of current quark masses may be derived as stable points of certain 4-th power in CKM matrix flavor-invariant potentials built with traces of 3x3 quark up and down mass matrices.
In this paper, we show how the mixing angles of the standard parameterization add when multiplying the quark and leptonic mixing matrices, i.e., we derive explicit sum rules for the quark and leptonic mixing angles. In this connection, we also discuss other recently proposed sum rules for the mixing angles assuming bimaximal fermion mixing. In addition, we find that the present experimental and phenomenological data of the mixing angles naturally fulfill our sum rules, and thus, give rise to bilarge or bimaximal fermion mixing.
Flavor nonconserving and CP violating effects of the quark mixings are investigated in electroweak models incorporating singlet quarks. Especially, the D^0 - {\bar D}^0 mixing and the neutron electric dipole moment, which are mediated by the up-type quark couplings to the neutral Higgs fields, are examined in detail for reasonable ranges of the quark mixings and the singlet Higgs mass scale. These neutral Higgs contributions are found to be comparable to or smaller than the experimental bounds even for the case where the singlet Higgs mass scale is of the order of the electroweak scale and a s…
Aspects of the quark mixings and flavor changing interactions are investigated in electroweak models with singlet quarks. The effects on the ordinary quark mixing are determined in terms of the quark masses and the parameters describing the mixing between the ordinary quarks q and the singlet quarks Q (q-Q mixing). Some salient features arise in the flavor changing interactions through the q-Q mixing. The unitarity of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix within the ordinary quark sector is violated, and the flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC's) appear both in the gauge and scalar cou…
We argue that there exists simple relation between the quark and lepton mixings which supports the idea of grand unification and probes the underlying robust bi-maximal fermion mixing structure of still unknown flavor physics. In this framework the quark mixing matrix is a parameter matrix describing the deviation of neutrino mixing from exactly bi-maximal, predicting theta_{sol}+theta_C=pi/4, where theta_C is the Cabibbo angle, theta_{atm}+theta_{23}^{CKM}=pi/4 and theta_{13}^{MNS} ~ theta_{13}^{CKM} ~ O(lambda^3), in a perfect agreement with experimental data. Both non-Abelian and Abelian fl…
We discuss some new invariants of quark mixing and show their usefulness with a simple example. We also present some other new tools for analyzing quark mixing.
Based on a supersymmetric Yukawaon model with O(3) family symmetry, possible forms of quark and lepton mixing matrices are systematically investigated under a condition that the up-quark mass matrix form leads to the observed nearly tribimaximal mixing in the lepton sector. Although the previous model could not provide a good fitting of the observed quark mixing, the present model can give a reasonably good fitting not for lepton mixing but also the quark mixing by using a different origin of the $CP$ violation from one in the previous model.
The recent experimental data on mixing angles for quarks and neutrino have been discussed. Quarks mixing angles are calculated in the phenomenological approach of Fritzsch-Scadron-Delbourgo-Rupp (FSDR approach) using mass values of light and heavy constituent quarks. The neutrino mixing angles have been calculated with the high degree of precision with the help of the hypothesis of quarks and neutrino mixing angles complementarity, the results obtained do not contradict with the present experimental data.
We present a unified parametrization of quark and lepton mixing matrices. By using some simple relations between the mixing angles of quarks and leptons, i.e., the quark-lepton complementarity, we parametrize the lepton mixing matrix with the Wolfenstein parameters $λ$ and $A$ of the quark mixing matrix. It is shown that the Wolfenstein parameter $λ$ can measure both the deviation of the quark mixing matrix from the unit matrix, and the deviation of the lepton mixing matrix from the exactly bimaximal mixing pattern.
The neutrino mixing matrix has been measured to be of a form consistent with tribimaximal mixing, while the quark mixing matrix is almost diagonal. A scheme based on flavour A_4 symmetry for understanding these patterns simultaneously is presented.
Models with new vector-like quarks can produce observable quark mixing effects which are forbidden in the Standard Model. We classify all such models and write down the effective Lagrangian that results from integrating out the new quarks. We study the relations between neutral and charged currents and discuss how to distinguish among the different possibilities.
We comment on the exponential parameterization of the quark mixing matrix, by stressing that it naturally incorporates the Cabibbo structure and the hierarchical features of the Wolfenstein form. We extend our results to the neutrino mixing and introduce an exponential generator of the tribimaximal matrix.
We introduce two new sets of invariant functions of quark mass matrices, which express the constraints on these mass matrices due to knowledge of the quark mixing matrix. These invariants provide a very simple method to test candidate forms for mass matrices.
The fact that quarks of the same electric charge possess a mass hierarchy is a big puzzle in particle physics, and it must be highly correlated with the hierarchy of quark flavor mixing. This review article is intended to provide a brief description of some important issues regarding quark masses, flavor mixing and CP violation. A comparison between the salient features of quark and lepton flavor mixing structures is also made.
New dynamical mechanism of quark mass generations and mixing is demonstrated in the examples of three and four generations. In the framework of the new mixing pattern, called the coherent mixing, the CKM elements are predicted compatible with experimental data for three generations, and are strongly constrained for four generations.
Flavor mixing and the quark mass spectrum are intimately related. In view of the observed strong hierarchy of the quark and lepton masses and of the flavor mixing angles it is argued that the description of flavor mixing must take this into account. One particular interesting way to describe the flavor mixing emerges, which is particularly suited for models of quark mass matrices based on flavor symmetries. We conclude that the unitarity triangle important for $B$ physics should be close to or identical to a rectangular triangle. $CP$ violation is maximal in this sense.
For the purpose of deriving the observed nearly tribimaximal neutrino mixing, a possible quark mass matrix model is investigated based on a yukawaon model. The neutrino mass matrix is related to the up-quark mass matrix. Five observable quantities (2 up-quark mass ratios and 3 neutrino mixing parameters) are excellently fitted by two parameters (one parameter in the up-quark mass matrix and another one in the neutrino mass matrix). Also, the CKM mixing parameters and down-quark mass ratios are given under the other 2 parameters.
We investigate the current renormalization prescriptions of quark mixing matrix and found that there is gauge dependence in the imaginary part of physical amplitude $W^{+}\to u_i \bar{d}_j$ in two main renormalization prescriptions. Our conclusion may affect the renormalization of the quark mixing matrix and indicates that it needs more investigation about the gauge independence in quark mixing matrix renormalization.
We discuss the special class of models where nearly maximal neutrino mixing is produced through the see-saw mechanism, starting from only nearly diagonal matrices for charged leptons, Dirac neutrinos and Majorana right-handed neutrinos.
We propose a mass matrix model that gives a unified description of quark and lepton with the same texture form based on a flavor 2 <-> 3 symmetry. The model is in contrast with the conventional picture that the mass matrix forms in the quark sector will take somewhat different structures from those in the lepton sector. By investigating possible types of assignment for masses, we find that our quark mass matrices can lead to small CKM quark mixings which are consistent with experimental values. We also find some phase-parameter-independent relations among CKM quark mixing matrix elements.
Quark flavor mixing may originate in the soft breaking of horizontal symmetries. Those symmetries, which in the simplest case are three family U(1) groups, are obeyed only by the dimension-4 Yukawa couplings and lead, when unbroken, to the absence of mixing. Their breaking may arise from the dimension-3 mass terms of SU(2)-singlet vector-like quarks. Those gauge-singlet mass terms break the horizontal symmetries at a scale much higher than the Fermi scale, yet softly, leading to quark mixing while the quark masses remain unsuppressed.
I review the present state of our knowledge about the masses and weak mixing elements of the u, d, s quarks. This is the written version of lectures given in the 1993 Theoretical Advanced Study Institute (TASI).
For the purpose of deriving the observed nearly tribimaximal neutrino mixing, a possible yukawaon model in the quark sector is investigated. Five observable quantities (2 up-quark mass ratios and 3 neutrino mixing parameters \sin^2 2θ_{atm}, \tan^2θ_{solar} and |U_{13}|) are excellently fitted by two parameters (one in the up-quark sector and another one in the right-handed Majorana neutrino sector).
It is shown that an idea proposed in 1996 that relates in a qualitatively correct way the inter-family mass hierarchies of the up quarks, down quarks, charged leptons, and neutrinos, can be combined with a predictive scheme recently proposed for relating quark mixing and neutrino mixing. In the resulting model, the entire flavor structure of the quarks and leptons is expressible in terms of two "master matrices": a diagonal matrix that gives the inter-family mass ratios, and an off-diagonal matrix that controls all flavor mixing.
Combined analysis of recent measured $\bs$ mixing and $B \to X_s γ$ decays provides constraints on the anomalous $\bar{t}sW$ couplings. We discuss the perspectives to examine the anomalous $\bar{t}sW$ couplings through CKM-suppressed $ t \to s W$ decays at the LHC.
Although tribimaximal mixing (TBM) and quark-lepton complementarity (QLC) are both compatible with experimental data within one standard deviation ($ 1 σ$), the TBM and QLC assumptions are mutually exclusive by $56 σ$.
We discuss the formulas for one-to-one correspondence between the two popular parametrizations of the quark mixing matrix and the confidence limits for the mixing parameters.
We investigate a scenario in which the CKM matrix arises from leptoquark--down quark mixing in a particular standard--like superstring model. We find that for some choices of F and D flat directions realistic quark mixing can be obtained without any phenomenological problems. This scenario predicts a symmetric (in absolute value) CKM matrix.
We perform an analysis of general quark mass matrices in the general nearest neighbor interaction form. Excellent agreement with experiment is realized with this general texture, which is neither hermitian nor real-symmetric. We then propose a new class of quark mass matrices that contain no additional parameters other than the quark masses themselves, and thus possess calculability, i.e., ensure a relationship between the six quark masses and four flavor-mixing parameters of the Standard Model.
I analyze $D$-$\ol D$ mixing using the techniques of heavy quark effect field theory. The analysis suggests that the there may be important cancellations among the dispersive effects of different kinds of final states, so that the total mixing may be considerably smaller than previous estimates.
We calculate the contributions of the vector-like quark model to $\BsBs$ mixing, taking into account the constraints from the decay $B\to X_sγ$. In this model the neutral bosons mediate flavor-changing interactions at the tree level. However, $\BsBs$ mixing is dominated by contributions from the box diagrams with the top quark and the extra up-type quark. In sizable ranges of the model parameters, the mixing parameter $x_s$ is much different from the standard model prediction.
The top quark mass and the flavor mixing are studied in the context of a Seesaw model of Quark Masses based on the gauge group $SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)$. Six isosinglet quarks are introduced to give rise to the mass hierarchy of ordinary quarks. In this scheme, we reexamine a mechanism for the generation of the top quark mass. It is shown that, in order to prevent the Seesaw mechanism to act for the top quark, the mass parameter of its isosinglet partner must be much smaller than the breaking scale of $SU(2)_R$. As a result the fourth lightest up quark must have a mass of the order …
A simple breaking of the subnuclear democracy of the quarks leads to a mixing between the second and the third family, in agrement with observation. Introducing the mixing between the first and the second family, one finds an interesting pattern of maximal CP--violation as well as a complete determination of the elements of the CKM matrix and of the unitarity triangle.
The importance of exchange currents, and of conserving isotopic spin at both the quark and baryon levels in application of the chiral quark model to any calculation of baryon magnetic moments is emphasized.
In view of the observed strong hierarchy of the quark and lepton masses and of the flavor mixing angles it is argued that the description of flavor mixing must take this into account. One particular interesting way to describe the flavor mixing, which, however, is not the one used today, emerges, which is best suited for models of quark mass matrices based on flavor symmetries. We conclude that the unitarity triangle important for $B$ physics should be close to or identical to a rectangular triangle. CP violation is maximal in this sense.
The universality hypothesis for quark and lepton mixing matrices (CKM and MNS) is further developed. This hypothesis explains why the CKM is almost diagonal whereas the MNS is almost maximally mixed. If this hypothesis is true, the Dirac CP violating phase of the MNS mixing matrix is bounded around $π$ or 0. Quark-lepton mass matrices which realizes this hypothesis are constructed, showing simple power law relations among mass matrices for up-type, down-type quarks and neutrinos.
We present some new mathematical tools which help to derive information about the quark mass matrices directly from experimental data and to elucidate the structure of these mass matrices.
A multiflavor model for dynamical chiral breaking reveals a solution highly suitable for stimulation of flavor mass hierarchy and mixings. The mechanism triggering the both phenomena simultaneously suppresses flavor changings. Thus, the main features of the observed quark system may spontaneously appear as inherent properties of a specific ground state.
We present a detailed study on triminimal parametrizations of quark and lepton mixing matrices with different basis matrices. We start with a general discussion on the triminimal expansion of the mixing matrix and on possible unified quark and lepton parametrization using quark-lepton complementarity (QLC). We then consider several interesting basis matrices and compare the triminimal parametrizations with the Wolfenstein-like parametrizations. The usual Wolfenstein parametrization for quark mixing is a triminimal expansion around the unit matrix as the basis. The corresponding QLC lepton mixi…
The nonleading corrections in the inverse mass of the heavy charmed quark to the effective local ΔS=2 Lagrangian of K^0-anti K^0 mixing are calculated within the standard model.
We present the realization of a mechanism that generates all mases and mixing angles by using the top quark as seed in the context of an anomaly free abelian extension of the standard model.
We present a largely model independent analysis of the lighter Heavy Quarkonium Hybrids based on the strong coupling regime of Potential Non-Relativistic QCD (pNRQCD). We calculate the spectrum at leading order, including the mixing of static hybrid states. We use potentials that fulfill the required short and long distance theoretical constraints and fit well the available lattice data. We argue that the decay width to the lower lying Heavy Quarkonia can be reliably estimated in some cases, and provide results for a selected set of decays. We also consider the mixing with Heavy Quarkonium sta…
We study the numerical effects of several renormalization schemes of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix on the top-quark decay widths. We then employ these results to infer the relative shifts in the CKM parameters |V_{tq}|^2 due to the quark mixing renormalization corrections, assuming that they are determined directly from the top-quark partial decay widths, without imposing unitarity constraints. We also discuss the implications of these effects on the ratio R = Gamma(t -> Wb) / Gamma_t and the determination of |V_{tb}|^2.
The quark mixing matrix is parameterised such that its "Cabibbo substructure" is emphasised. One can choose one of the parameters to be an arbitrarily chosen angle of the unitarity triangle, for example the angle $β$ (also called $Φ_1$).
The existence of new quarks may lead to their mixing with ordinary quarks. We are particularly interested in studying the consequences such mixings could have upon the electromagnetic current. We find that new strong flavor and parity violating electromagnetic interactions may exist. To be specific, for our analysis we work with the model: $SU_2 \otimes U_1 \otimes \hat{SU}_2 \otimes \hat{U}_1$, which doubles the standard electroweak sector, both in gauge bosons and in quarks.
In a nonrelativistic constituent quark model we find a constraint on the mixing angle of the strange axial-vector mesons, $35^o\stackrel{<}{\sim } θ_K\stackrel{<}{\sim }55^o,$ determined solely by two parameters: the mass difference of the $a_1$ and $b_1$ mesons and the ratio of the constituent quark masses.
