In this paper we consider an intrinsic point of view to describe the equations of motion for higher-order variational problems with constraints on higher-order trivial principal bundles. Our techniques are an adaptation of the classical Skinner-Rusk approach for the case of Lagrangian dynamics with higher-order constraints. We study a regular case where it is possible to establish a symplectic framework and, as a consequence, to obtain a unique vector field determining the dynamics. As an interesting application we deduce the equations of motion for optimal control of underactuated mechanical systems defined on principal bundles.
The Luttinger-Ward functional was proposed more than five decades ago to provide a link between static and dynamic quantities in a quantum many-body system. Despite its widespread usage, the derivation of the Luttinger-Ward functional remains valid only in the formal sense, and even the very existence of this functional has been challenged by recent numerical evidence. In a simpler and yet highly relevant regime, namely the Euclidean lattice field theory, we rigorously prove that the Luttinger-Ward functional is a well-defined universal functional over all physical Green's functions. Using the…
In the Hamiltonian formalism, and in the presence of a symmetry Lie group, a variational reduction procedure has already been developed for Hamiltonian systems without constraints. In this paper we present a procedure of the same kind, but for the entire class of the higher order constrained systems (HOCS), described in the Hamiltonian formalism. Last systems include the standard and generalized nonholonomic Hamiltonian systems as particular cases. When restricted to Hamiltonian systems without constraints, our procedure gives rise exactly to the so-called Hamilton-Poincaré equations, as expec…
A Lagrangian formalism for variational second-order delay ordinary differential equations (DODEs) is developed. The Noether operator identity for a DODE is established, which relates the invariance of a Lagrangian function with the appropriate variational equations and the conserved quantities. The identity is used to formulate Noether-type theorems that give the first integrals for DODE with symmetries. Relations between the invariance of the variational second-order DODEs and the invariance of the Lagrangian functions are also analyzed. Several examples illustrate the theoretical results.
The aim of this work is to study, from an intrinsic and geometric point of view, second-order constrained variational problems on Lie algebroids, that is, optimization problems defined by a cost functional which depends on higher-order derivatives of admissible curves on a Lie algebroid. Extending the classical Skinner and Rusk formalism for the mechanics in the context of Lie algebroids, for second-order constrained mechanical systems, we derive the corresponding dynamical equations. We find a symplectic Lie subalgebroid where, under some mild regularity conditions, the second-order constrain…
In this paper we combine two main topics in mechanics and optimal control theory: contact Hamiltonian systems and Pontryagin Maximum Principle. As an important result, among others, we develop a contact Pontryagin Maximum Principle that permits to deal with optimal control problems with dissipation. We also consider the Herglotz optimal control problem, which is simultaneously a generalization of the Herglotz variational principle and an optimal control problem. An application to the study of a thermodynamic system is provided.
In this paper, we analyze the variation of the gravitational action on a bounded region of spacetime whose boundary contains segments with various characters, including null. We develop a systematic approach to decompose the derivative of metric variations into orthogonal and tangential components with respect to the boundary and express them in terms of variations of geometric objects associated with the boundary hypersurface. We suggest that a double-foliation of spacetime provides a natural and useful set-up for treating the general problem and clarifies the assumptions and results in speci…
The present article is devoted to the construction of a unified formalism for Palatini and unimodular gravity. The basic idea is to employ a relationship between unified formalism for a Griffiths variational problem and its classical Lepage-equivalent variational problem. As a way to understand from an intuitive viewpoint the Griffiths variational problem approach considered here, we may say the variations of the Palatini Lagrangian are performed in such a way that the so called metricity condition, i.e. (part of) the condition ensuring that the connection is the Levi-Civita connection for the…
This work applies the contact formalism of classical mechanics and classical field theory, introduced by Herglotz and later developed in the context of contact geometry, to describe electromagnetic systems with dissipation. In particular, we study an electron in a non-perfect conductor and a variation of the cyclotron radiation. In order to apply the contact formalism to a system governed by the Lorentz force, it is necessary to generalize the classical electromagnetic gauge and add a term in the Lagrangian. We also apply the k-contact theory for classical fields to model the behaviour of elec…
We express covariance of the Batalin-Vilkovisky formalism in classical mechanics by means of the Maurer-Cartan equation in a curved Lie superalgebra, defined using the formal variational calculus and Sullivan's Thom-Whitney construction. We use this framework to construct a Batalin-Vilkovisky canonical transformation identifying the Batalin-Vilkovisky formulation of the spinning particle with an AKSZ field theory.
