It is known that Euler numbers, defined as the Taylor coefficients of the tangent and secant functions, count alternating permutations in the symmetric group. Springer defined a generalization of these numbers for each finite Coxeter group by considering the largest descent class, and computed the value in each case of the classification. We consider here another generalization of Euler numbers for finite Coxeter groups, building on Stanley's result about the number of orbits of maximal chains of set partitions. We present a method to compute these integers and obtain the value in each case of the classification.
In this paper we prove the strong $q$-log-convexity of the Eulerian polynomials of Coxeter groups using their exponential generating functions. Our proof is based on the theory of exponential Riordan arraya and a criterion for determining the strong $q$-log-convexity of polynomials sequences, whose generating functions can be given by the continued fraction. As consequences, we get the strong $q$-log-convexity the Eulerian polynomials of type $A_n,B_n$, their $q$-analogous and the generalized Eulerian polynomials associated to the arithmetic progression $\{a,a+d,a+2d,a+3d,\ldots\}$ in a unifie…
We investigate Mahonian and Eulerian probability distributions given by inversions and descents in general finite Coxeter groups. We provide uniform formulas for the means and variances in terms of Coxeter group data in both cases. We also provide uniform formulas for the double-Eulerian probability distribution of the sum of descents and inverse descents. We finally establish necessary and sufficient conditions for general sequences of Coxeter groups of increasing rank under which Mahonian and Eulerian probability distributions satisfy central and local limit theorems.
We give a natural generalization of the Tutte-Coxeter graph in a natural way and prove that the Tutte-Coxeter graph is the only vertex-transitive (edge-transitive) graph among all generalized Tutte-Coxeter graphs.
For any Coxeter system $(W,S)$ of rank $n$, we introduce an abstract boolean complex (simplicial poset) of dimension $2n-1$ that contains the Coxeter complex as a relative subcomplex. Faces are indexed by triples $(I,w,J)$, where $I$ and $J$ are subsets of the set $S$ of simple generators, and $w$ is a minimal length representative for the parabolic double coset $W_I w W_J$. There is exactly one maximal face for each element of the group $W$. The complex is shellable and thin, which implies the complex is a sphere for the finite Coxeter groups. In this case, a natural refinement of the $h$-pol…
The classical Eulerian Numbers $A_{n,k}$ are known to be log-concave. Let $P_{n,k}$ and $Q_{n,k}$ be the number of even and odd permutations with $k$ excedances. In this paper, we show that $P_{n,k}$ and $Q_{n,k}$ are log-concave. For this, we introduce the notion of strong synchronisation and ratio-alternating which are motivated by the notion of synchronisation and ratio-dominance, introduced by Gross, Mansour, Tucker and Wang in 2014. We show similar results for Type B Coxeter Groups. We finish with some conjectures to emphasize the following: though strong synchronisation is stronger than …
A relationship between signed Eulerian polynomials and the classical Eulerian polynomials on $\mathfrak{S}_n$ was given by Désarménien and Foata in 1992, and a refined version, called signed Euler-Mahonian identity, together with a bijective proof were proposed by Wachs in the same year. By generalizing this bijection, in this paper we extend the above results to the Coxeter groups of types $B_n$, $D_n$, and the complex reflection group $G(r,1,n)$, where the `sign' is taken to be any one-dimensional character. Some obtained identities can be further restricted on some particular set of permuta…
We develop combinatorics of parabolic double cosets in finite Coxeter groups as a follow-up of recent articles by Billey-Konvalinka-Petersen-Slofstra-Tenner and Petersen. (1) We construct a double coset system as a generalization of a two-sided analogue of a Coxeter complex and present its order structure with its local dimension function on certain connected components. As applications of double cosets to Bruhat graphs, we also prove: (2) every parabolic double coset is regular, (3) invariance of degree on Bruhat graph on lower intervals as an analogy of the one for Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial…
The well-known Worpitzky identity provides a connection between two bases of $\mathbb{Q}[x]$: The standard basis $(x+1)^n$ and the binomial basis ${{x+n-i} \choose {n}}$, where the Eulerian numbers for the Coxeter group of type $A$ (the symmetric group) serve as the entries of the transformation matrix. Brenti has generalized this identity to the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$ (signed and even-signed permutations groups, respectively) using generating function techniques. Motivated by Foata-Schützenberger and Rawlings' proof for the Worpitzky identity in the symmetric group, we provide co…
We construct a poset from a simple acyclic digraph together with a valuation on its vertices, and we compute the values of its Möbius function. We show that the weak order on Coxeter groups of type A, B, affine A, and the flag weak order on the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \_r \wr S\_n$ introduced by Adin, Brenti and Roichman, are special instances of our construction. We conclude by associating a quasi-symmetric function to each element of these posets. In the $A$ and $\widetilde{A}$ cases, this function coincides respectively with the classical Stanley symmetric function, and with Lam's affine…
We classify a class of complex representations of an arbitrary Coxeter group via characters of the integral homology of certain graphs. Such representations can be viewed as a generalization of the geometric representation and correspond to the second-highest 2-sided cell in the sense of Kazhdan-Lusztig. We also give a description of the cell representation provided by this 2-sided cell, and find out all its simple quotients for simply laced Coxeter system with no more than one circuit in the Coxeter graph.
We generalize the Hopf algebras of free quasisymmetric functions, quasisymmetric functions, noncommutative symmetric functions, and symmetric functions to certain representations of the category of all finite Coxeter systems and its dual category. We investigate their connections with the representation theory of 0-Hecke algebras of finite Coxeter systems. Restricted to type B and D we obtain dual graded modules and comodules over the corresponding Hopf algebras in type A.
We consider a generalization of Eulerian numbers which count the number of placements of $cn$ "rooks" on an $n\times n$ board where there are exactly $c$ rooks in each row and each column, and exactly $k$ rooks below the main diagonal. The standard Eulerian numbers correspond to the case $c=1$. We show that for any $c$ the resulting numbers are symmetric and give generating functions of these numbers for small values of $k$.
Regarding Euler's odd-strict theorem, which is the most basic partition identity, A refinement was done by Sylvester, and it was generalized by Bessenrodt to the r-regular and r-class regular cases. In this paper, we focus on the periodicity of the exponent seen on the r-regular side in Bessenrodt's generalization, and further generalize from that point of view. At the end of this paper, we also introduce a partition identity when extended without regard to the periodicity of the exponent.
We consider a generalization of the fundamental theorem of finitely generated abelian groups for some non-abelian groups, which is called OGS. First, we consider the dihedral group, which is a non-abelian extension of an abelian group by an involution. Then, we focus on a special case, where the abelian group is cyclic, which is the two-generated Coxeter group I{2}(m). We mention interesting connections between the reduced Coxeter presentation and a particular OGS canonical presentation, which we call the standard OGS canonical presentation. These connections motivate us to offer a generalizat…
The three main objects in noncrossing Catalan combinatorics associated to a finite Coxeter system are noncrossing partitions, clusters, and sortable elements. The first two of these have known Fuss-Catalan generalizations. We provide new viewpoints for both and introduce the missing generalization of sortable elements by lifting the theory from the Coxeter system to the associated positive Artin monoid. We show how this new perspective ties together all three generalizations, providing a uniform framework for noncrossing Fuss-Catalan combinatorics. Having developed the combinatorial theory, we…
A classical result states that the parity balance of the number of excedances of all permutations (derangements, respectively) of length $n$ is the Euler number. In 2010, Josuat-Vergès gives a $q$-analogue with $q$ representing the number of crossings. We extend this result to the permutations (derangements, respectively) of type B and D. It turns out that the signed countings are related to the derivative polynomials of $\tan$ and $\sec$. Springer numbers defined by Springer can be regarded as an analogue of Euler numbers defined on every Coxeter group. In 1992 Arnol'd showed that the Springe…
In a recent work, Andrews gave analytic proofs of two conjectures concerning some variations of two combinatorial identities between partitions of a positive integer into odd parts and partitions into distinct parts discovered by Beck. Subsequently, using the same method as Andrews, Chern presented the analytic proof of another Beck's conjecture relating the gap-free partitions and distinct partitions with odd length. However, the combinatorial interpretations of these conjectures are still unclear and required. In this paper, motivated by Glaisher's bijection, we give the combinatorial proofs…
For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. …
In two papers, Little and Sellers introduced an exciting new combinatorial method for proving partition identities which is not directly bijective. Instead, they consider various sets of weighted tilings of a $1 \times \infty$ board with squares and dominoes, and for each type of tiling they construct a generating function in two different ways, which generates a $q$-series identity. Using this method, they recover quite a few classical $q$-series identities, but Euler's Pentagonal Number Theorem is not among them. In this paper, we introduce a key parameter when constructing the generating fu…
Involution words are variations of reduced words for twisted involutions in Coxeter groups. They arise naturally in the study of the Bruhat order, of certain Iwahori-Hecke algebra modules, and of orbit closures in flag varieties. Specifically, to any twisted involutions $x$, $y$ in a Coxeter group $W$ with automorphism $*$, we associate a set of involution words $\hat{\mathcal{R}}_*(x,y)$. This set is the disjoint union of the reduced words of a set of group elements $\mathcal{A}_*(x,y)$, which we call the atoms of $y$ relative to $x$. The atoms, in turn, are contained in a larger set $\mathca…
This article is concerned with the constants that appear in Harish-Chandra's character formula for stable discrete series of real reductive groups, although it does not require any knowledge about real reductive groups or discrete series. In Harish-Chandra's work the only information we have about these constants is that they are uniquely determined by an inductive property. Later Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson and Herb gave different formulas for these constants. In this article we generalize these formulas to the case of arbitrary finite Coxeter groups (in this setting, discrete series no longe…
We introduce new generalizations of the Bernoulli, Euler, and Genocchi polynomials and numbers based on the Carlitz-Tsallis degenerate exponential function and concepts of the Umbral Calculus associated with it. Also, we present generalizations of some familiar identities and connection between these kinds of Bernoulli, Euler, and Genocchi polynomials. Moreover, we establish a new analogue of the Euler identity for the degenerate Bernoulli numbers.
