We investigate the geometric properties of lightlike surfaces in the Minkowski space $\R^{2,1}$, using Cartan's method of moving frames to compute a complete set of local invariants for such surfaces. Using these invariants, we give a complete local classification of lightlike surfaces of constant type in $\R^{2,1}$ and construct new examples of such surfaces.
A surface in the Lorentz-Minkowski $3$-space is generally a mixed type surface, namely, it has the lightlike locus. We study local differential geometric properties of such a locus on a mixed type surface. We define a frame field along a lightlike locus, and using it, we define two lightlike ruled surfaces along a lightlike locus which can be regarded as lightlike approximations of the surface along the lightlike locus. We study a relationship of singularities of these lightlike surfaces and differential geometric properties of the lightlike locus. We also consider the intersection curve of tw…

We characterize all ruled translating solitons in Minkowski 3-space. In contrast to the Euclidean space, we find ruled translating solitons that are not cylindrical. These surfaces appear when the vector field that defines the rulings, viewed as a curve, is a lightlike straight line. We also classify all cylindrical translating solitons, obtaining surfaces that can be considered as analogous to the grim reapers of Euclidean space, but also other surfaces which have no a counterpart in the Euclidean space.
In this paper, we extend the method developed in [17, 18] to curves in the Minkowski plane. The method proposes a way to study deformations of plane curves taking into consideration their geometry as well as their singularities. We deal in detail with all local phenomena that occur generically in 2-parameters families of curves. In each case, we obtain the geometry of the deformed curve, that is, information about inflections, vertices and lightlike points. We also obtain the behavior of the evolute/caustic of a curve at especial points and the bifurcations that can occur when the curve is def…
A canonical normal null direction on a spacelike surface in the four dimensional Minkowski space $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ is a parallel vector field $Z$ on $\mathbb{R}^{3,1}$ such that the normal component of $Z$ on the surface is a lightlike vector field. We describe the geometric properties of a spacelike surface endowed with a canonical normal null direction and we obtain some characterizations of these surfaces. Moreover, using their Gauss map we study other properties of these surface: the associated ellipse of curvature and their asymptotic directions. Finally, we give two different ways to cr…
In this work, we investigate the problem of finding surfaces in the Lorentz-Minkowski 3-space with prescribed skew ($S$) and mean ($H$) curvatures, which are defined through the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of the shape operator and its trace, respectively. After showing that $H$ and $S$ can be interpreted in terms of the expected value and standard deviation of the normal curvature seen as a random variable, we address the problem of prescribed curvatures for surfaces of revolution. For surfaces with a non-lightlike axis and prescribed $H$, the strategy consists in rewriting …

We give a unified description of tetrahedra with lightlike faces in 3d anti-de Sitter, de Sitter and Minkowski spaces and of their duals in 3d anti-de Sitter, hyperbolic and half-pipe spaces. We show that both types of tetrahedra are determined by a generalized cross-ratio with values in a commutative 2d real algebra that generalizes the complex numbers. Equivalently, tetrahedra with lightlike faces are determined by a pair of edge lengths and their duals by a pair of dihedral angles. We prove that the dual tetrahedra are precisely the generalized ideal tetrahedra introduced by Danciger. Final…
In this paper, we prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed lightlike directions in Minkowski space. This is equivalent to prove the existence of smooth, entire, strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces with prescribed Gauss map image. We also show that there doesn't exist any entire, convex, strictly spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurfaces. Moreover, we generalize the result in \cite{RWX} and construct strictly convex, spacelike, constant $σ_k$ curvature hypersurface with bounde…
