We study the effect of uniaxial pressure on the magnetic hysteresis loops of the single-molecule magnet Mn_{12}-Ac. We find that the application of pressure along the easy axis increases the fields at which quantum tunneling of magnetization occurs. The observations are attributed to an increase in the molecule's magnetic anisotropy constant D of 0.142(1)%/kbar. The increase in D produces a small, but measurable increase in the effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal. Density-functional theory calculations also predict an increase in the barrier with applied pressure.
Micromagnetic small-angle neutron scattering theory is well established for analyzing spin-misalignment scattering data of bulk ferromagnets. Here, this theory is extended to allow for a global uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (texture) of the material, in addition to the already included random zero-average local anisotropy. Macroscopic cross-sections and spin-misalignment response functions are computed analytically for several practically relevant mutual anisotropy and external magnetic field orientations in both parallel and perpendicular scattering geometries for field magnitudes both above a…
We report on a strain-induced and temperature dependent uniaxial anisotropy in V$_{2}$O$_{3}$/Ni hybrid thin films, manifested through the interfacial strain and sample microstructure, and its consequences on the angular dependent magnetization reversal. X-ray diffraction and reciprocal space maps identify the in-plane crystalline axes of the V$_{2}$O$_{3}$; atomic force and scanning electron microscopy reveal oriented rips in the film microstructure. Quasi-static magnetometry and dynamic ferromagnetic resonance measurements identify a uniaxial magnetic easy axis along the rips. Comparison wit…
The structure of stable magnetic solitons of various orders in soft magnetic nanotube with uniaxial magnetic anisotropy has been studied using numerical simulation. Solitons of even order are immobile in axially applied magnetic field. Odd solitons show decreased mobility with respect to that of head-to head domain wall. Solitons of various orders can participate in nanotube magnetization reversal process. Various coalescence and decomposition processes in soliton assembly are considered. It is shown that the general magnetization state of magnetic nanotube consists of chains of magnetic solit…

We have performed micromagnetic simulations to study the formation of skyrmions in ferromagnetic elements with different shapes having perpendicular anisotropy. The strength of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (D) and uniaxial anisotropy (K) are varied to elucidate the regime in which skyrmion formation can take place. It is found that for a certain combination of D and K skyrmion formation does not happen. Further we also observed that for large D and small K values, finite size effect dominates which in turn hinders formation of typical N'eel (spherical) skyrmions. However the resulting mag…
The influence of the crystal structure inhomogeneities on the magnetic properties of cobalt nanoparticles with different aspect ratio and spherical nanoparticles of chromium dioxide, cobalt ferrite and magnetite has been studied by means of numerical simulation. The polycrystalline nanoparticles are modeled by means of subdivision of the nanoparticle volume into tightly bound single-crystal granules with randomly distributed directions of the easy anisotropy axes. The probability of appearance of quasi uniform and vortex states in sufficiently large assemblies of polycrystalline nanoparticles …
We study speed and skew deflection-angle dependence on skyrmion deformations of a tightly bound two-skyrmion state in a synthetic ferrimagnet. We condsider here, an in-plane uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy-term in order to induce lateral shape distortions and an overall size modulation of the skyrmions due to a reduction of the effective out-of-plane anisotropy, thus affecting the skyrmion speed, skew-deflection and inducing anisotropy in these quantities with respect to the driving current-angle. Because of frustrated dipolar interactions in a synthetic ferrimagnet, sizeable skyrmion d…
We study the magnetic anisotropy which arises at the interface between a thin film ferromagnet and a 3-d Rashba material. The 3-d Rashba material is characterized by the spin-orbit strength $α$ and the direction of broken bulk inversion symmetry $\hat n$. We find an in-plane uniaxial anisotropy in the $\hat{z}\times\hat{n}$ direction, where $\hat z$ is the interface normal. For realistic values of $α$, the uniaxial anisotropy is of a similar order of magnitude as the bulk magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Evaluating the uniaxial anisotropy for a simplified model in 1-d shows that for small band f…
Analytical solution has been found for the second-order effective anisotropy of magnetic nanoparticles of a cubic shape due to the surface anisotropy (SA) of the Néel type. Similarly to the spherical particles, for the simple cubic lattice the grand-diagonal directions $\left(\pm1,\pm1,\pm1\right)$ are favored by the effective cubic anisotropy but the effect is twice as strong. Uniaxial core anisotropy and applied magnetic field cause screening of perturbations from the surface at the distance of the domain-wall width and reduce the effect of SA near the energy minima. However, screening disap…
We revisit the uniaxially strained graphene immersed in a uniform homogeneous magnetic field orthogonal to the layer in order to describe the time evolution of coherent states build from a semi-classical model. We consider the symmetric gauge vector potential to render the magnetic field, and we encode the tensile and compression deformations on an anisotropy parameter $ζ$. After solving the Dirac-like equation with an anisotropic Fermi velocity, we define a set of matrix ladder operators and construct electron coherent states as eigenstates of a matrix annihilation operator with complex eigen…
Observation of magnetic domains is important in understanding the magnetic properties of magnetic materials and devices. In this study, we report that the magnetic domains of M-type hexaferrites with uniaxial anisotropy can be visualized via small-angle electron diffraction and Foucault imaging. The position of the diffraction pattern spots has the same period as that of magnetic domains in a Sc-substituted hexaferrite (BaFe$_{12-x-δ}$Sc$_x$Mg$_δ$O$_{19}$). Conversely, the spots were observed four times longer than the period of magnetic domains in hexaferrite without substitution (BaFe$_{12}$…

Using micromagnetic simulation, we show that in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy (IPUA) can be used to obtain FAN-OUT, AND and OR gates in an array of coupled disks with magnetic vortex configuration. First, we studied the influence of the direction of application of the IPUA on the energy transfer time (τ) between two identical coupled nanodisks. We found that when the direction of the IPUA is along the x axis the magnetic interaction increases, allowing shorter values of τ, while the IPUA along the y direction has the opposite effect. The magnetic interactions between the nanodisks along x…
We study uniaxially strained graphene under the influence of non-uniform magnetic fields perpendicular to the material sample with a coordinate independent strain tensor. For that purpose, we solve the Dirac equation with anisotropic Fermi velocity and explore the conditions upon which such an equation possesses a supersymmetric structure in the quantum mechanical sense through examples. Working in a Laudau-like gauge, wave functions and energy eigenvalues are found analytically in terms of the magnetic field intensity, the anisotropy scales and other relevant parameters that shape the magneti…
We demonstrate the interplay between quantum well states in Pd and the magnetic anisotropy in Pd/Co/Cu(001) by combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and magneto optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements. Low temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals occupied and unoccupied quantum well states (QWS) in atomically flat Pd films on Co/Cu(001). These states give rise to sharp peaks in the differential conductance spectra. A quantitative analysis of the spectra reveals the electronic dispersion of the Pd(001) d-band ($Δ$$_5$-type) along the $Γ$-X direction. \textit{In-situ} MOKE ex…
