Let $K$ be a number field of degree $n$ with ring of integers $O_K$. By means of a criterion of Gilmer for polynomially dense subsets of the ring of integers of a number field, we show that, if $h\in K[X]$ maps every element of $O_K$ of degree $n$ to an algebraic integer, then $h(X)$ is integral-valued over $O_K$, that is $h(O_K)\subset O_K$. A similar property holds if we consider the set of all algebraic integers of degree $n$ and a polynomial $f\in\mathbb{Q}[X]$: if $f(α)$ is integral over $\mathbb{Z}$ for every algebraic integer $α$ of degree $n$, then $f(β)$ is integral over $\mathbb{Z}$ for every algebraic integer $β$ of degree smaller than $n$. This second result is established by proving that the integral closure of the ring of polynomials in $\mathbb{Q}[X]$ which are integer-valued over the set of matrices $M_n(\mathbb{Z})$ is equal to the ring of integral-valued polynomials over the set of algebraic integers of degree equal to $n$.
The paper studies some properties of the ring of integer-valued quasi-polynomials. On this ring, theory of generalized Euclidean division and generalized GCD are presented. Applications to finite simple continued fraction expansion and Smith normal form of integral matrices with integer parameters are also given.
We present a dimension formula for spaces of vector-valued modular forms of integer weight in case the associated multiplier system has finite image, and discuss the weight distribution of the module generators of holomorphic and cusp forms, as well as the duality relation between cusp forms and holomorphic forms for the contragredient.
Let $s_0,s_1,s_2,\ldots$ be a sequence of rational numbers whose $m$th divided difference is integer-valued. We prove that $s_n$ is a polynomial function in $n$ if $s_n \ll θ^n$ for some positive number $θ$ satisfying $θ< e^{1 + \tfrac{1}{2} + \cdots+ \tfrac{1}{m}} -1$.
In this exposition we discuss the theory of algebraic extensions of valued fields. Our approach is mostly through Galois theory. Most of the results are well-known, but some are new. No previous knowledge on the theory of valuations is needed.
It is well known, that if polynomial with rational coefficients of degree $n$ takes integer values in points $0,1,...,n$ then it takes integer values in all integer points. Are there sets of $n+1$ points with the same property in other integral domains? We show that answer is negative for the ring of Gaussian integers $\mathbb{Z}[i]$ when $n$ is large enough. Also we discuss the question about minimal possible size of set, such that if polynomial takes integer values in all points of this set then it is integer-valued.
An integer--valued function is an entire function which maps the nonnegative integers $\mathbb N$ to the integers. An example is $2^z$. A Hurwitz function is an entire function having all derivatives taking integer values at $0$. An example is ${\mathrm e}^z$. Lower bound for the growth order of such functions have a rich history. Many variants have been considered: for instance, assuming that the first $k$ derivatives at the integers are integers, or assuming that the derivatives at $k$ points are integers. These as well as and many other variants have been considered. We survey some of them.
We give two variations on a result of Wilkie's on unary functions defianble in $\mathbb{R}_{an,\exp}$ that take integer values at positive integers. Provided that the functions grows slower than the function $2^x$, Wilkie showed that is must be eventually equal to a polynomial. We show the same conclusion under a stronger growth condition but only assuming that the function takes values sufficiently close to a integers at positive integers. In a different variation we show that it suffices to assume that the function takes integer values on a sufficiently dense subset of the positive integers(…
Using the following $_4F_3$ transformation formula $$ \sum_{k=0}^{n}{-x-1\choose k}^2{x\choose n-k}^2=\sum_{k=0}^{n}{n+k\choose 2k}{2k\choose k}^2{x+k\choose 2k}, $$ which can be proved by Zeilberger's algorithm, we confirm some special cases of a recent conjecture of Z.-W. Sun on integer-valued polynomials.
Let D be a Krull domain and Int(D) the ring of integer-valued polynomials on D. For any f in Int(D), we explicitly construct a divisor homomorphism from [f], the divisor-closed submonoid of Int(D) generated by f, to a finite sum of copies of (N_0,+). This implies that [f] is a Krull monoid. For V a discrete valuation domain, we give explicit divisor theories of various submonoids of Int(V). In the process, we modify the concept of polynomial closure in such a way that every subset of D has a finite polynomially dense subset. The results generalize to Int(S,V), the ring of integer-valued polyno…
In this paper we show that any Bohr-zero non-periodic set $B$ of traceless integer valued matrices, denoted by $Λ$, intersects non-trivially the conjugacy class of any matrix from $Λ$. As a corollary, we obtain that the family of characteristic polynomials of $B$ contains all characteristic polynomials of matrices from $Λ$. The main ingredient used in this paper is an equidistribution result for an $SL_d(\mathbf{Z})$ random walk on a finite-dimensional torus deduced from Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes work.
In this paper, we study the derivatives of an integer-valued polynomial of a given degree. Denoting by $E_n$ the set of the integer-valued polynomials with degree $\leq n$, we show that the smallest positive integer $c_n$ satisfying the property: $\forall P \in E_n, c_n P' \in E_n$ is $c_n = \mathrm{lcm}(1 , 2 , \dots , n)$. As an application, we deduce an easy proof of the well-known inequality $\mathrm{lcm}(1 , 2 , \dots , n) \geq 2^{n - 1}$ ($\forall n \geq 1$). In the second part of the paper, we generalize our result for the derivative of a given order $k$ and then we give two divisibilit…
Recently, Z.-W. Sun introduced two kinds of polynomials related to the Delannoy numbers, and proved some supercongruences on sums involving those polynomials. We deduce new summation formulas for squares of those polynomials and use them to prove that certain rational sums involving even powers of those polynomials are integers whenever they are evaluated at integers. This confirms two conjectures of Z.-W. Sun. We also conjecture that many of these results have neat $q$-analogues.
The PSLQ algorithm computes integer relations for real numbers and Gaussian integer relations for complex numbers. We endeavour to extend PSLQ to find integer relations consisting of algebraic integers from some quadratic extension fields (in both the real and complex cases). We outline the algorithm, discuss the required modifications for handling algebraic integers, problems that have arisen, experimental results, and challenges to further work.
The paper assesses the top number of integer solutions for algebraic Diophantine Thue diagonal equation of the degree $n \geq 2$ and number of variables $k > 2$ and equations with explicit variable in the case when the coefficients of the equation are of the opposite signs. The author found integer conversions that maintain the asymptotic behavior of the number of integer solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation in the case of the conversion equation to diagonal form. The paper considers the estimation of the number of integer solutions for some types of algebraic Diophantine equations with…
This paper investigates the upper bound of the number of integer (natural) solutions of inhomogeneous algebraic Diophantine diagonal equations with integer coefficients without a free member via the circle method of Hardy and Littlewood. Author found the upper bound of the number of natural solutions of inhomogeneous algebraic Diophantine diagonal equations with explicit variable. He developed a method in the paper, which allows you to perform the low estimate of the number of natural (integer) solutions of algebraic Diophantine equation with integer coefficients. Author obtained a lower estim…
Let $n$ and $m$ be positive integers such that $n<m$. In this paper we compute the density of rectangular unimodular $n$ by $m$ matrices over the ring of algebraic integers of a number field.
In the paper, we study the asymptotic distribution of real algebraic integers of fixed degree as their na\"ıve height tends to infinity. For an arbitrary interval $I \subset \mathbb{R}$ and sufficiently large $Q>0$, we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of algebraic integers $α\in I$ of fixed degree $n$ and na\"ıve height $H(α)\le Q$. In particular, we show that the real algebraic integers of degree $n$, with their height growing, tend to be distributed like the real algebraic numbers of degree $n-1$. However, we reveal two symmetric "plateaux", where the distribution of real algebrai…
The paper presents a new generalized integer orthogonal transformation which consists of a well known orthogonal transform followed by stretching the basis vectors maintaining the asymptotic behavior of the number of integer solutions for algebraic Diophantine equation. The author shows the properties of this transformation and he receives the algorithm for finding the matrix elements of a generalized integer orthogonal transformation for algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order to diagonal form. The article includes examples illustrating the reduction of algebraic equations of the s…
Let $k$ be a number field. For $\mathcal{H}\rightarrow \infty$, we give an asymptotic formula for the number of algebraic integers of absolute Weil height bounded by $\mathcal{H}$ and fixed degree over $k$.
The author showed that any homogeneous algebraic Diophantine equation of the second order can be converted to a diagonal form using an integer non-orthogonal transformation maintaining asymptotic behavior of the number of its integer solutions. In this paper, we consider the transformation to the diagonal form of a wider class of algebraic second-order Diophantine equations, and also we consider the conditions for converting higher order algebraic Diophantine equations to this form. The author found an asymptotic estimate for the number of integer solutions of the diagonal Thue equation of odd…
We obtain results bounding the degree of the series $\sum_{n=1}^{\infty} 1/α_n$, where $\{α_n\}$ is a sequence of algebraic integers satisfying certain algebraic conditions and growth conditions. Our results extend results of Erdős, Hančl and Nair.
Algebraic integers in totally imaginary quartic number fields are not discrete in the complex plane under a fixed embedding, which makes it impossible to visualize all integers in the plane, unlike the quadratic imaginary algebraic integers. In this note we consider a naturally occurring discrete subset of the algebraic integers with similar properties as lattices. For the fifth cyclotomic field, we investigate those integers with absolute values under a fixed embedding in a given bound. We show that such integers form a discrete set in the complex plane. It is observed that this subset has qu…
In the paper, we study the asymptotic distribution of real algebraic integers of fixed degree as their naive height tends to infinity. Let $I \subset \mathbb{R}$ be an arbitrary bounded interval, and $Q$ be a sufficiently large number. We obtain an asymptotic formula for the count of algebraic integers $α$ of fixed degree $n$ and naive height $H(α)\le Q$ lying in $I$. In this formula, we estimate the order of the error term from above and below. We show that algebraic integers of degree $n$ are distributed asymptotically like algebraic numbers of degree $(n-1)$ as the upper bound $Q$ of height…
In arXiv:1302.4423, Salez proved that every totally real algebraic integer is the eigenvalue of some tree. We define the "arboreal height" of a totally real algebraic integer $λ$ to be the minimal height of a rooted tree having $λ$ as an eigenvalue. In this paper, we prove several results about totally real algebraic integers of arboreal height $2$: We show that all real quadratic integers have arboreal height $\le 2$. We characterize the totally real cubic integers of arboreal height $2$. Finally, we prove that every totally irrational real number field is generated (as a ring over $\mathbb{Q…
We show that the set of algebraic extensions $F$ of $\mathbb{Q}$ in which $\mathbb{Z}$ or the ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_F$ are definable is meager in the set of all algebraic extensions.
