We introduce on any smooth oriented minimal surface in Euclidean $3$-space a meromorphic quadratic differential, $P$, which we call the entropy differential. This differential arises naturally in a number of different contexts. Of particular interest is the realization of its real part as a conservation law for a natural geometric functional -- which is, essentially, the entropy of the Gauss curvature. We characterize several classical surfaces -- including Enneper's surface, the catenoid and the helicoid -- in terms of $P$. As an application, we prove a novel curvature estimate for embedded minimal surfaces with small entropy differential and an associated compactness theorem.
We prove that, among metrics on a compact quotient of $\left(\mathbb{H}^2\right)^n$ (product of hyperbolic planes) of prescribed total volume, the product of hyperbolic metrics has minimal volume entropy.
We establish isosystolic inequalities for a class of manifolds which includes the aspherical manifolds. In particular, we relate the systolic volume of aspherical manifolds first to their minimal entropy, then to the algebraic entropy of their fundamental groups.
In this paper we continue our study of equivariant minimal Lagrangian surfaces in $\mathbb{C} P^2$, characterizing the rotationally equivariant cases and providing explicit formulae for relevant geometric quantities of translationally equivariant minimal Lagrangian surfaces in terms of Weierstrass elliptic functions.
The Besson-Courtois-Gallot theorem is proven for noncompact finite volume Riemannian manifolds. In particular, no bounded geometry assumptions are made. This proves the minimal entropy conjecture for nonuniform rank one lattices.
We prove minimal entropy rigidity for complete, finite volume manifolds locally isometric to a product of rank one symmetric spaces of dimension at least 3: the locally symmetric metric uniquely minimizes (normalized) entropy among all Riemannian metrics. The corresponding theorem is true for maps into these spaces as well.
Let (T^2, g) be a two-dimensional Riemannian torus. In this paper we prove that the topological entropy of the geodesic flow restricted to the set of initial conditions of minimal geodesics vanishes, independent of the choice of the Riemannian metric.
We construct compact arbitrary Euler characteristic orientable and non-orientable minimal surfaces in the Berger spheres. Besides we show an interesting family of surfaces that are minimal in every Berger sphere, characterizing them by this property. Finally we construct, via the Daniel correspondence, new examples of constant mean curvature surfaces in the products S^2 x R, H^2 x R and in the Heisenberg group with many symmetries.
Let (M,g) be a compact Riemannian manifold of hyperbolic type, i.e M is a manifold admitting another metric of strictly negative curvature. In this paper we study the geodesic flow restricted to the set of geodesics which are minimal on the universal covering. In particular for surfaces we show that the topological entropy of the minimal geodesics coincides with the volume entropy of (M, g) generalizing work of Freire and Mane.
We show vanishing results about the infimum of the topological entropy of the geodesic flow of homogeneous smooth four manifolds. We prove that any closed oriented geometric four manifold has zero minimal entropy if and only if it has zero simplicial volume. We also show that if a four manifold M admits a geometric decomposition, in the sense of Thurston, and does not have geometric pieces modelled on hyperbolic four-space, the complex hyperbolic plane or the product of two hyperbolic planes, then M admits an F-structure. It follows that M has zero minimal entropy and collapses with curvature …
We show that if the variety of minimal rational tangents (VMRT) of a uniruled projective manifold at a general point is projectively equivalent to that of a symplectic or an odd-symplectic Grassmannian, the germ of a general minimal rational curve is biholomorphic to the germ of a general line in a presymplectic Grassmannian. As an application, we characterize symplectic and odd-symplectic Grassmannians, among Fano manifolds of Picard number 1, by their VMRT at a general point and prove their rigidity under global Kähler deformation. Analogous results for $G/P$ associated with a long root were…
We consider the minimal entropy problem, namely the question of whether there exists a smooth metric of minimal entropy, for certain classes of 3-manifolds. Among other resulsts, we show that if M is a closed, orientable, geometrizable 3-manifold with zero simplicial volume, then the minimal entropy can be solved for M if and only if M admits a metric modelled on 4 of the 8 standard 3-dimensional geometries, namely $S^3$, $S^2\times R$, $E^3$, or Nil.
On a Riemannian 2-torus $(T^2,g)$ we study the geodesic flow in the case of low complexity described by zero topological entropy. We show that this assumption implies a nearly integrable behavior. In our previous paper \cite{GK} we already obtained that the asymptotic direction and therefore also the rotation number exists for all geodesics. In this paper we show that for all $r \in \mathbb{R} \cup \{\infty\}$ the universal cover $\Br^2$ is foliated by minimal geodesics of rotation number $r$. For irrational $r \in \mathbb{R}$ all geodesics are minimal, for rational $r \in \mathbb{R} \cup \{\i…
We compute the Minimal Entropy of every closed, orientable $3$-manifold, showing that its cube equals the sum of the cubes of the minimal entropies of each hyperbolic component arising from the $JSJ$ decomposition of each prime summand. As a consequence we show that the cube of the Minimal Entropy is additive with respect to both the prime and the $JSJ$ decomposition, thus concluding that for closed orientable $3$-manifolds the cube of the Minimal Entropy is proportional to the simplicity volume. This answers a conjecture asked by Anderson and Paternain for irreducible manifolds.
We show that if a closed manifold M admits an F-structure (possibly of rank 0) then its minimal entropy vanishes. In particular, this is the case if M admits a non-trivial circle action. As a corollary we obtain that the simplicial volume of a colsed manifold admitting an F-structure is zero. We also show that if M admits an F-structure then it collapses with curvature bounded from below. This is turn implies that M collapses with bounded scalar curvature or, equivalently, its Yamabe invariant is non-negative. We show that F-structures of rank zero appear rather frequently:every compact comple…
In 2004, Taubes introduced the space of minimal hyperbolic germs with elements consisting of the first and second fundamental form of an equivariant immersed minimal disk in hyperbolic 3-space. Herein, we initiate a further study of this space by studying the behavior of a dynamically defined function which records the entropy of the geodesic flow on the associated Riemannian surface. We provide a useful estimate on this function which, in particular, yields a new proof of Bowen's theorem on the rigidity of the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set of quasi-Fuchsian groups. These follow from ne…
We show that the minimal volume entropy of closed manifolds remains unaffected when nonessential manifolds are added in a connected sum. We combine this result with the stable cohomotopy invariant of Bauer-Furuta in order to present an infinite family of four-manifolds with the following properties: 1) They have positive minimal volume entropy. 2) They satisfy a strict version of the Gromov-Hitchin-Thorpe inequality, with a minimal volume entropy term. 3) They nevertheless admit infinitely many distinct smooth structures for which no compatible Einstein metric exists.
The change in Holographic entanglement entropy (HEE) for small fluctuations about pure anti De Sitter (AdS) is obtained by a perturbative expansion of the area functional in terms of the change in the bulk metric and the embedded extremal surface. However, it is known that change in the embedding appears in second order or higher. It was shown that these changes in the embedding can be calculated in the $2+1$ dimensional case by solving a generalized geodesic deviation equation. We generalize this result to arbitrary dimensions by deriving an inhomogeneous form of the Jacobi equation for minim…
For closed odd-dimensional manifolds with sectional curvature less or equal than -1, we define the minimal surface entropy that counts the number of surface subgroups. It attains the minimum if and only if the metric is hyperbolic. Moreover, we compute the entropy associated with other locally symmetric spaces and cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
