If Gamma is a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in a semisimple Lie group whose real rank is greater than 1, we show Gamma contains a subgroup that is isomorphic to a nonuniform, irreducible lattice in either SL(3,R), SL(3,C), or a direct product SL(2,R)^m x SL(2,C)^n$, with m + n > 1. (In geometric terms, this can be interpreted as a statement about the existence of totally geodesic subspaces of finite-volume, noncompact, locally symmetric spaces of higher rank.) Zimmer's conjecture for actions of $\mathrm{SL}(m,\mathbb{Z})$

We prove Zimmer's conjecture for $C^2$ actions by finite-index subgroups of $\mathrm{SL}(m,\mathbb{Z})$ provided $m>3$. The method utilizes many ingredients from our earlier proof of the conjecture for actions by cocompact lattices in $\mathrm{SL}(m,\mathbb{R})$ but new ideas are needed to overcome the lack of compactness of the space $(G \times M)/Γ$ (admitting the induced $G$-action). Non-compactness allows both measures and Lyapunov exponents to escape to infinity under averaging and a number of algebraic, geometric, and dynamical tools are used control this escape. Counting closed geodesics on rank one manifolds

We establish a precise asymptotic formula for the number of homotopy classes of periodic orbits for the geodesic flow on rank one manifolds of nonpositive curvature. This extends a celebrated result of G. A. Margulis to the nonuniformly hyperbolic case and strengthens previous results by G. Knieper. We also establish some useful properties of the measure of maximal entropy.

Higher-rank instanton cohomology and the quilted Atiyah-Floer conjecture

Given a closed, connected, oriented 3-manifold with positive first Betti number, one can define an instanton Floer group as well as a quilted Lagrangian Floer group. The quilted Atiyah-Floer conjecture states that these cohomology groups are isomorphic. We initiate a program for proving this conjecture.

Counter-Examples to a generalised Toral Rank Conjecture

The toral rank conjecture speculates that the sum of the Betti numbers of a compact manifold admitting a free action of a torus of rank $r$ is bounded from below by $2^r$. Clearly, such an action yields a torus bundle, and, more generally, the same cohomological bound is conjectured for total spaces of suitable topological torus fibrations by Félix--Oprea--Tanré. In this article we show that this generalised toral rank conjecture cannot hold by providing various different counter-examples to it (for each rank $r\geq 5$).
