We show that if a closed manifold M admits an F-structure (possibly of rank 0) then its minimal entropy vanishes. In particular, this is the case if M admits a non-trivial circle action. As a corollary we obtain that the simplicial volume of a colsed manifold admitting an F-structure is zero. We also show that if M admits an F-structure then it collapses with curvature bounded from below. This is turn implies that M collapses with bounded scalar curvature or, equivalently, its Yamabe invariant is non-negative. We show that F-structures of rank zero appear rather frequently:every compact complex elliptic surface admits one as well as any simply connected 5-manifold. We use these results to study the minimal entropy problem. We show the following two theorems: suppose M is obtained by taking connected sums of copies of CP^2 (with any orintation), S^2 \times S^2 and the K3 surface. Then M has zero minimal entropy. Moreover, M admits a metric with zero topological entropy if and only if M is diffeomorphic to S^4, CP^2, S^2 \times S^2, CP^2#CP^2 or CP^2#(-CP^2). Finally, suppose that M is a closed simply connected 5-manifold. Than M has zero minimal entropy. Moreover, M admits a metric with zero topological entropy if and only if M is diffeomorphic to S^5, S^3 \times S^2, the non-trivial S^3-bundle over S^2 or the Wu manifold SU(3)/SO(3).
We provide a direct proof of a non-collapsing estimate for compact hypersurfaces with positive mean curvature moving under the mean curvature flow: Precisely, if every point on the initial hypersurface admits an interior sphere with radius inversely proportional to the mean curvature at that point, then this remains true for all positive times in the interval of existence.
We provide several characterisations of collapsing and noncollapsing in convex ancient mean curvature flow, establishing in particular that collapsing occurs if and only if the flow is asymptotic to at least one Grim hyperplane. As a consequence, we rule out collapsing singularity models in $(n-1)$-convex mean curvature flow (even when the initial datum is only immersed). Explicit counterexamples show that $(n-1)$-convexity is optimal. We are also able to rule out collapsing singularity models for suitably pinched solutions of higher codimension.
Cheeger and Gromov showed that F-structures are related to collapse with a double-sided curvature bound. We define fibered F-structures and extend some of the Cheeger-Gromov results to the setting of collapse with a lower bound on the curvature operator.
We prove an optimal control on the time-dependent measure of a measurable set under a reparametrized Lagrangian mean curvature flow of almost calibrated submanifolds in a Calabi-Yau manifold. Moreover we give a classification of those Lagrangian translating solitons in $\mathbb{C}^m$ that evolve by this reparametrized flow
We obtain new topological information about the local structure of collapsing under a lower sectional curvature bound. As an application we prove a new sphere theorem and obtain a partial result towards the conjecture that not every Alexandrov space can be obtained as a limit of a sequence of Riemannian manifolds with sectional curvature bounded from below.
In the present paper, we determine the topologies of three-dimensional closed Alexandrov spaces which converge to lower dimensional spaces in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology.
We survey some recent developments in the study of collapsing Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature bounded below, especially the locally bounded Ricci covering geometry and the Ricci flow smoothing techniques. We then prove that if a Calabi-Yau manifold is sufficiently volume collapsed with bounded diameter and sectional curvature, then it admits a Ricci-flat Kähler metrictogether with a compatible pure nilpotent Killing structure: this is related to an open question of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov.
In this paper, an n-dimensional complete open manifold with nonnegative Ricci curvature and collapsing volume has been investigated. If its radial sectional curvature bounded from below, it shows that such a manifold is of finite topological type under some restrictions shown below.
We provide a quantitative obstruction to collapsing surfaces of genus at least 2 under a lower curvature bound and an upper diameter bound. Keywords: curvature; diameter; volume; filling radius; systole; Gromov-Hausdorff distance
We show that for certain locally collapsing initial data with Ricci curvature bounded below, one could start the Ricci flow for a definite period of time. This provides a Ricci flow smoothing tool, with which we find topological conditions that detect the collapsing infranil fiber bundles over controlled Riemannian orbifolds among those locally collapsing regions with Ricci curvature bounded below. In the appendix, we also provide a local distance distortion estimate for certain Ricci flows with collapsing initial data.
We study the line bundle mean curvature flow on Kähler surfaces under the hypercritical phase and a certain semipositivity condition. We naturally encounter such a condition when considering the blowup of Kähler surfaces. We show that the flow converges smoothly to a singular solution to the deformed Hermitian-Yang-Mills equation away from a finite number of curves of negative self-intersection on the surface. As an application, we obtain a lower bound of a Kempf-Ness type functional on the space of potential functions satisfying the hypercritical phase condition.
Consider a closed Riemannian $n$-manifold $M$ admitting a negatively curved Riemannian metric. We show that for every Riemannian metric on $M$ of sufficiently small volume, there is a point in the universal cover of $M$ such that the volume of every ball of radius $r \geq 1$ centered at this point is greater or equal to the volume of the ball of the same radius in the hyperbolic $n$-space. We also give an interpretation of this result in terms of macroscopic scalar curvature. This result, which holds more generally in the context of polyhedral length spaces, is related to a question of Guth. I…
In this note we will show the almost maximal volume entropy rigidity for manifolds with lower integral Ricci curvature bound in the non-collapsing case: Given $n, d, p>\frac{n}{2}$, there exist $δ(n, d, p), ε(n, d, p)>0$, such that for $δ<δ(n, d, p)$, $ε<ε(n, d, p)$, if a compact $n$-manifold $M$ satisfies that the integral Ricci curvature has lower bound $\bar k(-1, p)\leq δ$, the diameter $diam(M)\leq d$ and volume entropy $h(M)\geq n-1-ε$, then the universal cover of $M$ is Gromov-Hausdorff close to a hyperbolic space form $\Bbb H^k$, $k\leq n$; If in addition the volume of $M$, $vol(M)\geq…
We show some results for the $L^2$ curvature flow linked by the theme of addressing collapsing phenomena. First we show long time existence and convergence of the flow for $SO(3)$-invariant initial data on $S^3$, as well as a long time existence and convergence statement for three-manifolds with initial $L^2$ norm of curvature chosen small with respect only to the diameter and volume, which are both necessary dependencies for a result of this kind. In the critical dimension $n = 4$ we show a related low-energy convergence statement with an additional hypothesis. Finally we exhibit some finite …
We study sequences of 3-dimensional solutions to the Ricci flow with almost nonnegative sectional curvatures and diameters tending to infinity. Such sequences may arise from the limits of dilations about singularities of Type IIb. In particular, we study the case when the sequence collapses, which may occur when dilating about infinite time singularities. In this case we classify the possible Gromov-Hausdorff limits and construct 2-dimensional virtual limits. The virtual limits are constructed using Fukaya theory of the limits of local covers. We then show that the virtual limit arising from a…
We construct a compact, convex ancient solution of mean curvature flow in $\mathbb R^{n+1}$ with $O(1)\times O(n)$ symmetry that lies in a slab of width $π$. We provide detailed asymptotics for this solution and show that, up to rigid motions, it is the only compact, convex, $O(n)$-invariant ancient solution that lies in a slab of width $π$ and in no smaller slab.
We consider embedded hypersurfaces evolving by fully nonlinear flows in which the normal speed of motion is a homogeneous degree one, concave or convex function of the principal curvatures, and prove a non-collapsing estimate: Precisely, the function which gives the curvature of the largest interior sphere touching the hypersurface at each point is a subsolution of the linearized flow equation if the speed is concave. If the speed is convex then there is an analogous statement for exterior spheres. In particular, if the hypersurface moves with positive speed and the speed is concave in the pri…
In this paper, which is a sequel to math.DG/9902111, we analyze the limit of the p-form Laplacian under a collapse with bounded sectional curvature and bounded diameter to a singular limit space. As applications, we give results about upper and lower bounds on the j-th eigenvalue of the p-form Laplacian, in terms of sectional curvature and diameter.
In my talk I will discuss the following results which were obtained in joint work with Wilderich Tuschmann. 1. For any given numbers $m$, $C$ and $D$, the class of $m$-dimensional simply connected closed smooth manifolds with finite second homotopy groups which admit a Riemannian metric with sectional curvature $\vert K \vert\le C$ and diameter $\le D$ contains only finitely many diffeomorphism types. 2. Given any $m$ and any $δ>0$, there exists a positive constant $i_0=i_0(m,δ)>0$ such that the injectivity radius of any simply connected compact $m$-dimensional Riemannian manifold with finite …
It was recently proved that embedded solutions of Euclidean hypersurface flows with speeds given by concave (convex), degree one homogeneous functions of the Weingarten map are interior (exterior) non-collapsing. These results were subsequently extended to hypersurface flows in the sphere and hyperbolic space. In the first part of the paper, we show that locally convex solutions are exterior non-collapsing for a larger class of speed functions than previously considered; more precisely, we show that the previous results hold when convexity of the speed function is relaxed to inverse-concavity.…
Let g_t be a family of constant scalar curvature metrics on the total space of a Riemannian submersion obtained by shrinking the fibers of an original metric g, so that the submersion collapses as t approaches 0 (i.e., the total space converges to the base in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense). We prove that, under certain conditions, there are at least 3 unit volume constant scalar curvature metrics in the conformal class [g_t] for infinitely many t's accumulating at 0. This holds, e.g., for homogeneous metrics g_t obtained via Cheeger deformation of homogeneous fibrations with fibers of positive sc…
This manuscript studies manifolds-with-boundary collapsing in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology. The main aim is an understanding of the relationship of the topology and geometry of a limiting sequence of manifolds-with-boundary to that of a limit space, which is presumed to be without geodesic terminals. The main result establishes a disc bundle structure for any manifold-with-boundary having two-sided bounds on sectional curvature and second fundamental form, and a lower bound on intrinsic injectivity radius, which is sufficiently close in the Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a closed manifold. The …
Let $(\M^n, g_{ij})$ be a complete Riemammnian manifold. For some constants $p,\ r>0$, define $\displaystyle k(p,r)=\sup_{x\in M}r^2\left(\oint_{B(x,r)}|Ric^-|^p dV\right)^{1/p}$, where $Ric^-$ denotes the negative part of the Ricci curvature tensor. We prove that for any $p>\frac{n}{2}$, when $k(p,1)$ is small enough, certain Li-Yau type gradient bound holds for the positive solutions of the heat equation on geodesic balls $B(O,r)$ in $\M$ with $0<r\leq 1$. Here the assumption that $k(p,1)$ being small allows the situation where the manifolds is collapsing. Recall that in \cite{ZZ}, certain L…
We analyze the limit of the p-form Laplacian under a collapse, with bounded sectional curvature and bounded diameter, to a smooth limit space. As an application, we characterize when the p-form Laplacian has small positive eigenvalues in a collapsing sequence.
In this paper, the relationship between the existence of special lagrangian submanifolds and the collapsing of Calabi-Yau manifolds is studied. First, special lagrangian fibrations are constructed on some regions of bounded curvature and sufficiently collapsed in Ricci-flat Calabi-Yau manifolds. Then, in the opposite direction,it is shown that the existence of special lagrangian submanifolds with small volume implies the collapsing of some regions in the ambient Calabi-Yau manifolds.
We construct F-structures on a Bott manifold and on some other manifolds obtained by Kummer-type constructions. We also prove that if M=E#X, where E is a fiber bundle with structure group G and a fiber admitting a G-invariant metric of non-negative sectional curvature and X admits an F-structure with one trivial covering, then one can construct on M a sequence of metrics with sectional curvature uniformly bounded from below and volume tending to zero (i.e. $Vol_K$ (M)=0). As a corollary we prove that all the elements in the Spin cobordism group can be represented by manifolds M with $Vol_K$ (M…
We consider Riemannian 4-manifolds that Gromov-Hausdorff converge to a lower dimensional limit space, with the Ricci tensor going to zero. Among other things, we show that if the limit space is two dimensional then under some mild assumptions, the limiting four dimensional geometry away from the curvature blowup region is semiflat Kaehler.
We analyze the limit of the spectrum of a geometric Dirac-type operator under a collapse with bounded diameter and bounded sectional curvature. In the case of a smooth limit space B, we show that the limit of the spectrum is given by the spectrum of a certain first-order differential operator on B, which can be constructed using superconnections. In the case of a general limit space X, we express the limit operator in terms of a transversally elliptic operator on a G-space Y, with X = Y/G. As an application, we give a characterization of manifolds which do not admit uniform upper bounds, in te…
In the last two decades, one of the most important developments in Riemannian geometry is the collapsing theory of Cheeger-Fukaya-Gromov. A Riemannian manifold is called (sufficiently) collapsed if its dimension looks smaller than its actual dimension while its sectional curvature remains bounded (say a very thin flat torus looks like a circle in a bared eyes). We will survey the development of collapsing theory and its applications to Riemannian geometry since 1990. The common starting point for all of these is the existence of a singular fibration structure on collapsed manifolds. However, n…
In this paper we study collapsing sequences M_{i}-> X of Riemannian manifolds with curvature bounded or bounded away from a controlled subset. We introduce a structure over X which in an appropriate sense is dual to the N-structure of Cheeger, Fukaya and Gromov. As opposed to the N-structure, which live over the M_{i} themselves, this structure lives over X and allows for a convenient notion of global convergence as well as the appropriate background structure for doing analysis on X. This structure is new even in the case of uniformly bounded curvature and as an application we give a generali…
We give a purely geometrical smooth characterization of closed infrasolv manifolds and orbifolds by showing that, up to diffeomorphism, these are precisely the spaces which admit a collapse with bounded curvature and diameter to compact flat orbifolds. Moreover, we distinguish irreducible smooth fake tori geometrically from standard ones by proving that the former have non-vanishing D-minimal volume.
We consider the mean curvature evolution of rotationally symmetric surfaces. Using numerical methods, we detect critical behavior at the threshold of singularity formation resembling the one of gravitational collapse. In particular, the mean curvature simulation of a one-parameter family of initial data reveals the existence of a critical initial surface that develops a degenerate neckpinch. The limiting flow of the Type II singularity is accurately modeled by the rotationally symmetric translating soliton.
In this short note, exploits of constructions of $\mathcal{F}$-structures coupled with technology developed by Cheeger-Gromov and Paternain-Petean are seen to yield a procedure to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, Yamabe invariant and to study collapsing with bounded sectional curvature on inequivalent smooth structures and inequivalent PL-structures within a fixed homeomorphism class. We compute these fundamental Riemannian invariants for every high-dimensional smooth manifold on the homeomorphism class of any smooth manifold that admits a Riemannian metric of zero sectional curvature.…
By Cheeger-Colding's almost splitting theorem, if a domain in a Ricci flat manifold is pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff close to a lower dimensional Euclidean domain, then there is a harmonic almost splitting map. We show that any eigenfunction of the Laplace operator is almost constant along the fibers of the almost splitting map, in the $L^2$-average sense. This generalizes an estimate of Fukaya in the case of collapsing with bounded diameter and sectional curvature.
This short note studies the collapsing behavior of the Kähler-Ricci flow on a compact Kähler manifold X admitting a holomorphic submersion X -> B where B is a Kähler manifold of lower dimension than X. We give cohomological and curvature conditions under which the fibers collapse at the optimal rate ~(T-t)^{1/2}
Let (M^n_i,g_i,p_i) be a sequence of smooth pointed complete n-dimensional Riemannian Manifolds with uniform bounds on the sectional curvatures and let (X,d,p) be a metric space such that (M^n_i,g_i,p_i) -> (X,d,p) in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense. Let O \subseteq X be the set of points x \in X such that there exists a neighborhood of x which is isometric to an open set in a Riemannian orbifold and let B = O^c be the complement set. Then we have the sharp estimates dim_Haus(B) \leq min{n-5, dim_Haus(X)-3}, and further for arbitrary x \in X we have that x \in O iff a neighborhood of x has bounded …
Soap films hanging from a wire frame are studied in the framework of capillarity theory. Minimizers in the corresponding variational problem are known to consist of positive volume regions with boundaries of constant mean curvature/pressure, possibly connected by "collapsed" minimal surfaces. We prove here that collapsing only occurs if the mean curvature/pressure of the bulky regions is negative, and that, when this last property holds, the whole soap film lies in the convex hull of its boundary wire frame.
We discover a bifurcation of the perturbations of non-generic closed self-shrinkers. If the generic perturbation is outward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from outside; if the generic perturbation is inward, then the next mean curvature flow singularity is cylindrical and collapsing from inside.
Motivated by the torus stability problem, in this work we study Kähler metrics with almost non-negative scalar curvature on complex torus. We prove that after passing to a subsequence, non-collapsing sequence of Kähler metrics with almost non-negative scalar curvature will converge to flat torus weakly.
We prove a formula involving the scalar curvature of a Riemannian manifold endowed with a distribution in terms of an adapted orthonormal frame for its tangent bundle. Using the formula, we then investigate the effect of collapsing the metric along the distribution on the scalar curvature. This result contributes to the question of finding a positive scalar curvature metric on a Riemannian manifold.
In this work we prove convergence results of sequences of Riemannian $4$-manifolds with almost vanishing $L^2$-norm of a curvature tensor and a non-collapsing bound on the volume of small balls. In Theorem 1.1, we consider a sequence of closed Riemannian $4$-manifolds, whose $L^2$-norm of the Riemannian curvature tensor tends to zero. Under the assumption of a uniform non-collapsing bound and a uniform diameter bound, we prove that there exists a subsequence that converges with respect to the Gromov-Hausdorff topology to a flat manifold. In Theorem 1.2, we consider a sequence of closed Riemann…
This is an expositiry article on collapsing theory in Riemannian geometry written for the Modern Encyclopedia of Mathematical Physics (MEMPhys). We focus on describing the geometric and topological structure of collapsed/non-collapsed regions in Riemannian manifold under various curvature assumptions. Numerous applications of collapsing theory to Riemannian geometry are NOT discussed in this survey.
This note is a continuation of the author's paper \cite{Li}. We prove that if the metric $g$ of a 4-manifold has bounded Ricci curvature and the curvature has no local concentration everywhere, then it can be smoothed to a metric with bounded sectional curvature. Here we don't assume the bound for local Sobolev constant of $g$ and hence this smoothing result can be applied to the collapsing case.
Let $(M,g)$ be a complete noncompact non-collapsing $n$-dimensional riemannian manifold, whose complex sectional curvature is bounded from below and scalar curvature is bounded from above. Then ricci flow with above as its initial data, has at most one solution in the class of complete riemannian metric with complex sectional curvature bounded from below.
We prove that metric measure spaces obtained as limits of closed Riemannian manifolds with Ricci curvature satisfying a uniform Kato bound are rectifiable. In the case of a non-collapsing assumption and a strong Kato bound, we additionally show that for any $α\in (0,1)$ the regular part of the space lies in an open set with the structure of a $\mathcal{C}^α$-manifold.
We develop a structure theory for non-collapsed Ricci shrinkers without any curvature condition. As applications, we obtain some curvature estimates of the Ricci shrinkers depending only on the non-collapsing constant.
Restrictions are obtained on the topology of a compact divergence-free null hypersurface in a four-dimensional Lorentzian manifold whose Ricci tensor is zero or satisfies some weaker conditions. This is done by showing that each null hypersurface of this type can be used to construct a family of three-dimensional Riemannian metrics which collapses with bounded curvature and applying known results on the topology of manifolds which collapse. The result is then applied to general relativity, where it implies a restriction on the topology of smooth compact Cauchy horizons in spacetimes with vario…
For collapsing sequences of Riemannian manifolds which satisfy a uniform lower Ricci curvature bound it is shown that there is a sequence of scales such that for a set of good base points of large measure the pointed rescaled manifolds subconverge to a product of a Euclidean and a compact space. All Euclidean factors have the same dimension, all possible compact factors satisfy the same diameter bounds and their dimension does not depend on the choice of the base point (along a fixed subsequence).
