We study numerically the axisymmetric relativistic Bondi-Hoyle accretion of a supersonic ideal gas onto a fixed Schwarzschild background space-time described with horizon penetrating coordinates. We verify that a nearly stationary shock cone forms and that the properties of the shock cone are consistent with previous results in Newtonian gravity and former relativistic studies. The fact that the evolution of the gas is tracked on a spatial domain that contains a portion of the inner part of the black hole avoids the need to impose boundary conditions on a time-like boundary as done in the past. Thus, our approach contributes to the solution to the Bondi-Hoyle accretion problem at the length scale of the accretor in the sense that the gas is genuinely entering the black hole. As an astrophysical application, we study for a set of particular physical parameters, the spectrum of the shock cone vibrations and their potential association with QPO sources.
Previously unexplored accretion regimes associated with the rotation of accreting matter, namely the perturbations of a quasi-spherical subsonic settling flow and Bondi-Hoyle accretion in the presence of axial rotation, are considered within the framework of ideal hydrodynamics. For subsonic settling accretion, the perturbations are shown to grow rapidly as the gravitating center is approached, so that the flow in the inner regions can no longer be considered as quasi-spherical. For Bondi-Hoyle accretion, a vacuum cylindrical cavity is shown to be formed at large distances from the gravitating…
In this paper we present a fully relativistic study of axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamic Bondi--Hoyle accretion onto a moving Kerr black hole. The equations of general relativistic magnetohydrodynamics are solved using high resolution shock capturing methods. In this treatment we consider the ideal MHD limit. The parameters of interest in this study are the adiabatic constant $Γ$, the asymptotic speed of sound $c_{s}^{\infty}$, and the plasma beta parameter $β_{P}$. We focus the investigation on the parameter regime in which the flow is supersonic, or when $v_\infty \ge c_{s}^{\infty}$. In some…
In this work, we present, for the first time, a numerical study of the Bondi-Hoyle accretion with density gradients in the fully relativistic regime. In this context, we consider accretion onto a Kerr Black Hole (BH) of a supersonic ideal gas, which has density gradients perpendicular to the relative motion. The set of parameters of interest in this study are the Mach number, M, the spin of the BH, a, and the density-gradient parameter of the gas, ρ . We show that, unlike in the Newtonian case, all the studied cases, especially those with density gradient, approach a stationary flow pattern. T…
Detonation initiation in a reactive medium can be achieved by an externally created shock wave. Supersonic flow onto a gravitating center, known as Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion, is a natural shock wave creating process, but, to our knowledge, a reactive medium has never been considered in the literature. Here, we conduct an order of magnitude analysis to investigate under which conditions the shock-induced reaction zone recouples to the shock front. We derive three semianalytical criteria for self-sustained detonation ignition. We apply these criteria to the special situation where a …
Bondi-Hoyle accretion configurations occur as soon as a gravitating body is immersed in an ambient medium with a supersonic relative velocity. From wind-accreting X-ray binaries to runaway neutron stars, such a regime has been witnessed many times and is believed to account for shock formation, the properties of which can be only marginally derived analytically. In this paper, we present the first results of the numerical characterization of the stationary flow structure of Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto a compact object, from the large scale accretion radius down to the vicinity of the compact bo…
An ultrarelativistic relativistic study of axisymmetric Bondi--Hoyle accretion onto a moving Kerr black hole is presented. The equations of general relativistic hydrodynamics are solved using high resolution shock capturing methods. In this treatment we consider the ultrarelativistic limit wherein one may neglect the baryon rest mass density. This approximation is valid in the regime where the internal energy of the system dominates over the rest mass energy contribution from the baryons. The parameters of interest in this study are the adiabatic constant $Γ$, and the asymptotic speed of the f…
The numerical investigation of Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto a moving black hole has a long history, both in Newtonian and in general-relativistic physics. By performing new two-dimensional and general-relativistic simulations onto a rotating black hole, we point out a novel feature, namely, that quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) are naturally produced in the shock cone that develops in the downstream part of the flow. Because the shock cone in the downstream part of the flow acts as a cavity trapping pressure perturbations, modes with frequencies in the integer ratios 2:1 and 3:1 are easily pro…
We present a new code for performing general-relativistic radiation-hydrodynamics simulations of accretion flows onto black holes. The radiation field is treated in the optically-thick approximation, with the opacity contributed by Thomson scattering and thermal bremsstrahlung. Our analysis is concentrated on a detailed numerical investigation of hot two-dimensional, Bondi-Hoyle accretion flows with various Mach numbers. We find significant differences with respect to purely hydrodynamical evolutions. In particular, once the system relaxes to a radiation-pressure dominated regime, the accretio…
We study the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole (BH), which is surrounded by rigid and small, randomly distributed, bodies. These bodies are idealized representations of substructure like stars passing close to the BH, bubbles created by stellar winds or cold clumps. We explore cases where the filling factor of these bodies is small. The flow is assumed to be adiabatic and move supersonically towards the black hole. The interaction with these rigid obstacles transforms ram pressure of the flow into thermal pressure through bow shocks, slowing down the f…

We use 2D (axisymmetric) and 3D hydrodynamic simulations to study Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion with and without transverse upstream gradients. We mainly focus on the regime of high (upstream) Mach number, weak upstream gradients and small accretor size, which is relevant to neutron star (NS) accretion in wind-fed Supergiant X-ray binaries (SgXBs). We present a systematic exploration of the flow in this regime. When there are no upstream gradients, the flow is always stable regardless of accretor size or Mach number. For finite upstream gradients, there are three main types of behavior…
Merging supermassive black hole-black hole (BHBH) binaries produced in galaxy mergers are promising sources of detectable gravitational waves. If such a merger takes place in a gaseous environment, there is a possibility of a simultaneous detection of electromagnetic and gravitational radiation, as the stirring, shock heating and accretion of the gas may produce variability and enhancements in the electromagnetic flux. Such a simultaneous detection can provide a wealth of opportunities to study gravitational physics, accretion physics, and cosmology. We investigate this scenario by performing …
In this paper, the numerical investigation of a Bondi-Hoyle accretion around a non-rotating black hole in a novel four dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity is investigated by solving the general relativistic hydrodynamical equations using the high resolution shock capturing scheme. For this purpose, the accreated matter from the wind-accreating X-ray binaries falls towards the black hole from the far upstream side of the domain, suphersonically. We study the effects of Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant $α$ in 4D EGB gravity on the accreated matter and shock cones created in the downstream re…
Axisymmetric MHD simulations are used to investigate the Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto an isolated magnetized neutron star moving supersonically (with Mach number of 3) through the interstellar medium. The star is assumed to have a dipole magnetic field aligned with its motion and a magnetospheric radius R_m less then the accretion radius R_BH, so that the gravitational focusing is important. We find that the accretion rate to a magnetized star is smaller than that to a non-magnetized star for the parameters considered. Close to the star the accreting matter falls to the star's surface along the …
An isolated star moving supersonically through a uniform gas accretes material from its gravitationally-induced wake. The rate of accretion is set by the accretion radius of the star and is well-described by classical Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton theory. Stars, however, are not born in isolation. They form in clusters where they accrete material that is influenced by all the stars in the cluster. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of clusters of individual accretors embedded in a uniform-density wind in order to study how the accretion rates experienced by individual cluster member…
Understanding the physical structures of the accreated matter very close to the black hole in quasars and active galactic nucleus (AGNs) is an important milestone to constrain the activities occurring in their centers. In this paper, we numerically investigate the effects of the asymptotic velocities on the physical structures of the accretion disk around the Kerr and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) rapidly rotating black holes. The Bondi-Hoyle accretion is considered with a falling gas towards the black hole in upstream region of the computational domain. The shock cones are naturally produced in…
Binary stars are common. While only those with small separations may exchange gas with one another, even the widest binaries interact with their gaseous surroundings. Drag forces and accretion rates dictate how these systems are transformed by these interactions. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton flows, in which a binary moves supersonically relative to a homogeneous medium, using the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. We simulate a range of values of the initial semi-major axis of the orbit relative to the gravitational focusing impact parameter …

Three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations of wandering intermediate-mass black holes considering the anisotropic radiation and dust sublimation
We model, for the first time, the Bondi-Hoyle accretion of a fluid with velocity gradients onto a Kerr black hole, by numerically solving the fully relativistic hydrodynamics equations. Specifically, we consider a supersonic ideal gas, which has velocity gradients perpendicular to the relative motion. We measure the mass and specific angular accretion rates to illustrate whether the fluid presents unstable patterns or not. The initial parameters, we consider in this work, are the velocity gradient $ε_{v}$, the black hole spin $a$, the asymptotic Mach number ${\cal M}_{\infty}$ and adiabatic in…
Whilst in galaxy-size simulations, supermassive black holes (SMBH) are entirely handled by sub-grid algorithms, computational power now allows the accretion radius of such objects to be resolved in smaller scale simulations. In this paper, we investigate the impact of resolution on two commonly used SMBH sub-grid algorithms; the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) formula for accretion onto a point mass, and the related estimate of the drag force exerted onto a point mass by a gaseous medium. We find that when the accretion region around the black hole scales with resolution, and the BHL formula is ev…
Several processes may limit the accretion rate onto a super-massive black hole (SMBH). Two processes that are commonly considered (e.g., for sub-grid prescriptions) are Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion and the Eddington limit. A third one is AGN wind feedback. It has been long suggested that such a wind feedback regulates the final SMBH mass, however, it has been shown recently that AGN winds can also regulate the average accretion rate at a level consistent with observations of high redshift AGNs. In this paper we study the effect of wind feedback on the accretion rate using 2D, high resolutio…
Starting from the assumption that there is a large population (> 10^8) of isolated, stellar-mass black holes (IBH) distributed throughout our galaxy, we consider the detectable signatures of accretion from the interstellar medium (ISM) that may be associated with such a population. We simulate the nearby (radius 250 pc) part of this population, corresponding to the closest ~35 000 black holes, using current best estimates of the mass distribution of stellar mass black holes combined with two models for the velocity distribution of stellar-mass IBH which bracket likely possibilities. We distrib…
Steady state, spherically symmetric accretion flows are well understood in terms of the Bondi solution. Spherical symmetry however, is necessarily an idealized approximation to reality. Here we explore the consequences of deviations away from spherical symmetry, first through a simple analytic model to motivate the physical processes involved, and then through hydrodynamical, numerical simulations of an ideal fluid accreting onto a Newtonian gravitating object. Specifically, we consider axisymmetric, large-scale, small amplitude deviations in the density field such that the equatorial plane is…
We study numerically the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle accretion of an ideal gas onto a Kerr fixed background space-time on the equatorial plane with s-lab symmetry. We use both Kerr-Schild (KS) and Boyer-Lindquist (BL) coordinates. We particularly focus on the study of the flip-flop motion of the shock cone formed when the gas is injected at supersonic speed. The development of the flip-flop instability of the shock cone in the relativistic regime was reported recently for the first time. We reproduce the flip-flop behaviour found in the past when BL coordinates are used, and perform similar numer…
A compact object moving relative to surrounding gas accretes material and perturbs the density of gas in its vicinity. In the classical picture of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion, the perturbation takes the form of an overdense wake behind the object, which exerts a dynamical friction drag. We use hydrodynamic simulations to investigate how the accretion rate and strength of dynamical friction are modified by the presence of outflow from the compact object. We show that the destruction of the wake by an outflow reduces dynamical friction, and reverses its sign when the outflow is strong enough…
We study a slightly rotating accretion flow onto a black hole, using the fully three dimensional (3-D)numerical simulations. We consider hydrodynamics of an inviscid flow, assuming a spherically symmetric density distribution at the outer boundary and a small, latitude-dependent angular momentum. We investigate the role of the adiabatic index and gas temperature, and the flow behaviour due to non-axisymmetric effects. Our 3-D simulations confirm axisymmetric results: the material that has too much angular momentum to be accreted forms a thick torus near the equator and the mass accretion rate …
We carry out a time dependent numerical simulation where both the hydrodynamics and the radiative transfer are coupled together. We consider a two-component accretion flow in which the Keplerian disk is immersed inside an accreting low angular momentum flow (halo) around a black hole. The injected soft photons from the Keplerian disk are reprocessed by the electrons in the halo. We show that in presence of an axisymmetric soft-photon source, the spherically symmetric Bondi flow losses its symmetry and becomes axisymmetric. The low angular momentum flow was observed to slow down close to the ax…
The existence of intermediate-mass ($\sim 10^3 M_\odot$) black holes in the center of globular clusters has been suggested by different observations. The X-ray sources observed in NGC 6388 and in G1 in M31 could be interpreted as being powered by the accretion of matter onto such objects. In this work we explore a scenario in which the black hole accretes from the cluster interstellar medium, which is generated by the mass loss of the red giants in the cluster. We estimate the accretion rate onto the black hole and compare it to the values obtained via the traditional Bondi-Hoyle model. Our re…
In this paper, a Bondi-Hoyle accretion onto the rotating black hole in Einstein-Gauss Bonnet gravity is studied. By injecting the gas from the upstream region of the computational domain, we have found the occurrence of the stable shock cones in the downstream region. The dynamical structures and oscillation properties of these shock cones strongly depend on the black hole spin parameter $a$ and Gauss-Bonnet coupling constant alpha. It is found that the various values of alpha can lead the different amounts of matter to pile up close to the black hole horizon, higher alpha causes bigger oscill…
We investigate a possibility to find an accreting isolated black hole (IBH) with mass $1-100~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ within Central Galactic Molecular Zone (CMZ) in the submillimetre and IR spectral range with help of planned space observatories James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Millimetron (MM). We assume the spherical mode of accretion. We develop the simplest possible quantitative model of the formation of radiation spectrum in this range due to synchrotron emission and show that it fully agrees with the more complicated model of Ipser and Price 1982 for expected values of accretion rate. I…
We present a novel analytic model of relativistic wind accretion on to a Schwarzschild black hole. This model constitutes a general relativistic extension of the classical model of wind accretion by Bondi, Hoyle, and Lyttleton (BHL). As in BHL, this model is based on the assumptions of steady state, axisymmetry, and ballistic motion. Analytic expressions are provided for the wind streamlines while simple numerical schemes are presented for calculating the corresponding accretion rate and density field. The resulting accretion rate is greater in the relativistic model when compared to the Newto…
X-shaped radio galaxies (XRGs) produce misaligned X-shaped jet pairs and make up $\lesssim10\%$ of radio galaxies. XRGs are thought to emerge in galaxies featuring a binary supermassive black hole ($\rm SMBH$), $\rm SMBH$ merger, or large-scale ambient medium asymmetry. We demonstrate that XRG morphology can naturally form without such special, preexisting conditions. Our 3D general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulation for the first time follows magnetized rotating gas from outside the $\rm SMBH$ sphere of influence of radius $R_{\rm B}$ to the $\rm SMBH$ of gravitational radius…
Scalar fields pervade theoretical physics and are a fundamental ingredient to solve the dark matter problem, to realize the Peccei-Quinn mechanism in QCD or the string-axiverse scenario. They are also a useful proxy for more complex matter interactions, such as accretion disks or matter in extreme conditions. Here, we study the collision between scalar "clouds" and rotating black holes. For the first time we are able to compare analytic estimates and strong field, nonlinear numerical calculations for this problem. As the black hole pierces through the cloud it accretes according to the Bondi-H…
Accretion onto a supermassive black hole of a rotating inflow is a particularly difficult problem to study because of the wide range of length scales involved. There have been broadly utilized analytic and numerical treatments of the global properties of accretion flows, but detailed numerical simulations are required to address certain critical aspects. We use the ZEUS code to run hydrodynamical simulations of rotating, axisymmetric accretion flows with Bremsstrahlung cooling, considering solutions for which the centrifugal balance radius significantly exceeds the Schwarzschild radius, with a…
We study the properties of rotating accretion flows onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs) using axisymmetric two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations with radiative cooling and BH feedback. The simulations resolve the accretion dynamics of gas outside from the BH influence radius through an inner accretion disk. For lower Bondi accretion rates in units of the Eddington rate ($\dot{M}_{\rm B}\ll 10^{-3}~\dot{M}_{\rm Edd}$), the BH feeding is suppressed due to turbulent motion by several orders of magnitudes from the Bondi rate. Thus, the radiative luminosity results in as low as $\sim 10^{-10…
We study accretion environments of active galactic nuclei when a super-massive black hole wanders in a circum-nuclear region and passes through an interstellar medium there. It is expected that a Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton type accretion of the interstellar matter takes place and an accretion stream of matter trapped by the black hole gravitational field appears from a tail shock region. Since the trapped matter is likely to have a certain amount of specific angular momentum, the accretion stream eventually forms an accretion ring around the black hole. According to the recent study, the accretion …
Active galactic nuclei (AGN) are powered by the accretion of disks of gas onto supermassive black holes (SMBHs). Stars and stellar remnants orbiting the SMBH in the nuclear star cluster (NSC) will interact with the AGN disk. Orbiters plunging through the disk experience a drag force and, through repeated passage, can have their orbits captured by the disk. A population of embedded objects in AGN disks may be a significant source of binary black hole mergers, supernovae, tidal disruption events and embedded gamma-ray bursts. For two representative AGN disk models we use geometric drag and Bondi…
We investigate low-density accretion flows onto massive black holes (BHs) with masses of $\gtrsim 10^5~M_\odot$ orbiting around in the outskirts of their host galaxies, performing three-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations. Those wandering BHs are populated via ejection from the galactic nuclei through multi-body BH interactions and gravitational wave recoils associated with galaxy and BH coalescences. We find that when a wandering BH is fed with hot and diffuse plasma with density fluctuations, the mass accretion rate is limited at $\sim 10-20\%$ of the canonical Bondi-Hoyle-Littleton rate …
