We study a slightly rotating accretion flow onto a black hole, using the fully three dimensional (3-D)numerical simulations. We consider hydrodynamics of an inviscid flow, assuming a spherically symmetric density distribution at the outer boundary and a small, latitude-dependent angular momentum. We investigate the role of the adiabatic index and gas temperature, and the flow behaviour due to non-axisymmetric effects. Our 3-D simulations confirm axisymmetric results: the material that has too much angular momentum to be accreted forms a thick torus near the equator and the mass accretion rate is lower than the Bondi rate.
In our previous study of the 3-D accretion flows, for gamma=5/3, we found that the inner torus precessed, even for axisymmetric conditions at large radii. The present study shows that the inner torus precesses also for other values of the adiabatic index: gamma=4/3, 1.2 and 1.01. However, the time for the precession to set increases with decreasing gamma. In particular, for gamma=1.01 we find that depending on the outer boundary conditions, the torus may shrink substantially due to the strong inflow of the non-rotating matter and the precession will have insufficient time to develop. On the other hand, if the torus is supplied by the continuous inflow of the rotating material from the outer radii, its inner parts will eventually tilt and precess, as it was for the larger gamma's.
We study the role of adiabatic index in determining the critical points in the transonic low angular momentum accretion flow onto a black hole. We present the general relativistic 2D hydrodynamic simulations of axisymmetric, inviscid accretion flows in a fixed Kerr black hole gravitational field. A relativistic fluid where its bulk velocity is comparable to the speed of light, flowing in the accretion disk very close to the horizon can be described by an adiabatic index of 4/3 < γ < 5/3. The time dependent evolution of the shock position and respective effects on mass accretion rate and oscill…
We investigated accretion on to black holes in presence of viscosity and cooling, by employing an equation of state with variable adiabatic index and multi-species fluid. We obtained the expression of generalized Bernoulli parameter which is a constant of motion for an accretion flow in presence of viscosity and cooling. We obtained all possible transonic solutions for a variety of boundary conditions, viscosity parameters and accretion rates. We identified the solutions with their positions in the parameter space of generalized Bernoulli parameter and the angular momentum on the horizon. We s…
We investigate a relativistic fluid jet driven by radiation from a shocked accretion disc around a non-rotating black hole approximated by Paczyński-Wiita potential. The sub-Keplerian and Keplerian accretion rates control the shock location and therefore, the radiation field around the accretion disc. We compute the radiative moments with full special relativistic transformation. The effect of a fraction of radiation absorbed by the black hole has been approximated, over and above the special relativistic transformations. We show that the radiative moments around a super massive black hole are…
We have investigated the influence of X-ray irradiation on the vertical structure of the outer accretion disk in low-mass X-ray binaries by performing a self-consistent calculation of the vertical structure and X-ray radiation transfer in the disk. Penetrating deep into the disk, the field of scattered X-ray photons with energy $E\gtrsim10$\,keV exerts a significant influence on the vertical structure of the accretion disk at a distance $R\gtrsim10^{10}$\,cm from the neutron star. At a distance $R\sim10^{11}$\,cm, where the total surface density in the disk reaches $Σ_0\sim20$\,g\,cm$^{-2}$, X…
The turbulence and spatial nonuniformity of the guide magnetic field cause two competitive effects, namely, the scattering effect and the adiabatic focusing effect, respectively. In this work, we numerically solve the five-dimensional Fokker-Planck transport equation to investigate the radial evolutions of these important effects undergone by the solar energetic particles (SEPs) propagating through interplanetary space. We analyze the interplay process between the scattering and adiabatic focusing effects in the context of three-dimensional propagation, with special attention to the scenario o…
We study the adiabatic accretion process of ordinary baryonic gas onto spherically symmetric black holes in Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory, with two parameters $α$ and $β$ in the coupling term. Especially, we demonstrate the range of the transonic points in terms of the charge-to-mass ratio squared and the dimensionless coordinate radius, in two important classes of black holes as examples. Further, we find that the two coupling parameters give modifications to the mass accretion rate at different orders of the sound speed at infinity. We also present their different effects on the temperature…
We investigate the alignment processes of spinning black holes and their surrounding warped accretion disks in a frame of two different types of feeding at the outer boundaries. We consider (1) fixed flows in which gas is continually fed with a preferred angular momentum, and (2) free flows in which there is no gas supply and the disks diffuse freely at their outer edges. As expected, we find that for the cases of fixed flows the black hole disk systems always end up aligning on timescales of several 1e6 yr, irrespective of the initial inclinations. If the initial inclination angles are larger…
The mass accretion rate of transonic spherical accretion flow onto compact objects such as black holes is known as the Bondi accretion rate(Mdot_B), which is determined only by the density and the temperature of gas at the outer boundary. But most work on disc accretion has taken the mass flux to be a given with the relation between that parameter and external conditions left uncertain. Within the framework of a slim alpha disk, we have constructed global solutions of the rotating, viscous hot accretion flow and determined its mass accretion rate as a function of density, temperature, and angu…
We present analytical solutions for the thermodynamic (temperature, pressure, density, etc.) properties of thin accretion flows in the region within the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a Kerr black hole, the first analytical solutions of their kind. These solutions are constructed in the adiabatic limit and neglect radiative losses, an idealisation valid for a restricted region of parameter space. We highlight a number of remarkable properties of these solutions, including that these solutions cool for radii $r_I/2 < r < r_I$, before increasing in temperature for $0 < r < r_I/2$, ind…

We present the relativistic 2D and 3D GRMHD simulation of axisymmetric, inviscid, hydrodynamic accretion flows in a fixed Kerr black hole gravitational field. The flow is having low angular momentum with respect to Keplerian one. A relativistic fluid where its bulk velocity is comparable to the speed of light, flowing in the accretion disk very close to the horizon should be described by adiabtic index: 4=3 < g < 5=3 .The time dependent evolution of shock position and respective effect on mass accretion rate and oscillation frequency with varying adiabatic index has been studied. Here we prese…
Winds are commonly observed in luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs). A plausible model of those winds is magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) disc winds. In the case of disc winds from a thin accretion disc, isothermal or adiabatic assumption is usually adopted in such MHD models. In this work we perform two-dimensional MHD simulations implementing different thermal treatments (isothermal, adiabatic and radiative) to study their effects on winds from a thin accretion disc. We find that both the isothermal model and the adiabatic model overestimate the temperature, underestimate the power of disc winds,…
The UV emission from X-ray binaries, is more likely to be produced by reprocessing of X-rays by the outer regions of an accretion disk. The structure of the outer disk may be altered due to the presence of X-ray irradiation and we discuss the physical regimes where this may occur and point out certain X-ray binaries where this effect may be important. The long term X-ray variability of these sources is believed to be due to stochastic fluctuations in the outer disk, which propagate inwards giving rise to accretion rate variation in the X-ray producing inner regions. The X-ray variability will …
Cosmology models predict that external accretion shocks form in the outer region of galaxy clusters due to supersonic gas infall from filaments and voids in the cosmic web. They are characterized by high sonic and Alfvénic Mach numbers, $M_s\sim10-10^2$ and $M_A\sim10^2-10^3$, and propagate into weakly magnetized plasmas of $β\equiv P_g/P_B\gtrsim10^2$. Although strong accretion shocks are expected to be efficient accelerators of cosmic rays (CRs), nonthermal signatures of shock-accelerated CRs around clusters have not been confirmed, and detailed acceleration physics at such shocks has yet to…
We study the relativistic, time-independent, low angular momentum, inviscid, advective accretion flow around Kerr black hole. Considering the relativistic equation of state (REoS), we examine the transonic properties of the flow and find that there exists an upper bound of the location of the physically accepted critical point ($r^{\rm max}_{\rm out}$). However, no such limit exists when an ideal gas equation of state (IEoS) is assumed to describe the flow. Further, we calculate the global accretion solutions that contain shock waves and separate the domain of parameter space in angular moment…
Hercules X-1 is a nearly edge-on accreting X-ray pulsar with a warped accretion disk, precessing with a period of about 35 days. The disk precession allows for unique and changing sightlines towards the X-ray source. To investigate the accretion flow at a variety of sightlines, we obtained a large observational campaign on Her X-1 with XMM-Newton (380 ks exposure) and Chandra (50 ks exposure) for a significant fraction of a single disk precession cycle, resulting in one of the best datasets taken to date on a neutron star X-ray binary. Here we present the spectral analysis of the High State hi…
The broad-line region (BLR) disappears in many low-luminosity AGNs, the reason of which is still controversial. The BLRs in AGNs are believed to be associated with the outflows from the accretion disks. Most of the low-luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) contain advection dominated accretion flows (ADAFs), which are very hot and have a positive Bernoulli parameter. ADAFs are therefore associated with strong outflows. We estimate the cooling of the outflows from the ADAFs, and find that the gases in such hot outflows always cannot be cooled efficiently by bremsstrahlung radiation. The ADAF may co-exist wi…

Nowhere is black hole feedback seen in sharper relief than in the Perseus cluster of galaxies. Owing to a combination of astrophysical and instrumental challenges, however, it can be difficult to study the black hole accretion that powers feedback into clusters of galaxies. Recent observations with Hitomi have resolved the narrow Fe K-alpha line associated with accretion onto the black hole in NGC 1275 (3C 84), the active galaxy at the center of Perseus. The width of that line indicates the fluorescing material is located 6-45 pc from the black hole. Here, we report on a specialized Chandra im…
Optical emission from actively accreting X-ray binaries is dominated by X-ray reprocessing on the outer disk. In the regime of supercritical accretion, strong radiation will power a massive wind that is optically thick and nearly spherical, and will occult the central hard X-rays from irradiating the outer disk. Instead, thermal emission from the wind will act as a new source of irradiation. Here, we construct a self-irradiation model, in which the inner disk (within the wind photosphere) is completely blocked by the wind, the middle part (between the wind photosphere and scattersphere) is hea…
This paper deals with the viscous accretion flow of modified Chaplygin gas towards a black hole as the central gravitating object. Modified Chaplygin gas is a particular type of dark energy model which mimics of radiation era to phantom era depending on the different values of its parameters. We compare the drak energy accretion with the flow of adiabatic gas. An accretion disc flow around a black hole is an example of a transonic flow. To make the model, we consider three components of Navier Stokes' equation, the equation of continuity and the modified Chaplygin gas's equation of state. As a…
Continuing our study of the role and evolution of accretion disc winds in the microquasar GRS 1915+105, we present high-resolution spectral variability analysis of the beta and gamma states with the Chandra High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer. By tracking changes in the absorption lines from the accretion disc wind, we find new evidence that radiation links the inner and outer accretion discs on a range of time-scales. As the central X-ray flux rises during the high-luminosity gamma state, we observe the progressive over-ionization of the wind. In the beta state, we argue that change…
We report 235 GHz linear and circular polarization (LP and CP) detections of Sgr A* at levels of $\sim10\%$ and $\sim-1\%$, respectively, using ALMA. We describe the first full-Stokes modeling of an observed submillimeter flare with an adiabatically-expanding synchrotron hotspot using a polarized radiative transfer prescription. Augmented with a simple full-Stokes model for the quiescent emission, we jointly characterize properties of both the quiescent and variable components by simultaneously fitting all four Stokes parameter light curves. The hotspot has magnetic field strength $71$ G, radi…
We study the global solutions of slowly rotating accretion flows around the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of an elliptical galaxy. The velocity of accreted gas surrounding the black hole is initially subsonic and then falls onto the black hole supersonically, so accretion flow must be transonic. We numerically solve equations from the Bondi radius to near the black hole. The focus of our discussion will be on the properties of slightly rotating accretion flows in which radiative losses have been ignored. This study discusses how outer boundary conditions (the temperature and specific …
Neutrino-dominated accretion flows (NDAFs) around rotating stellar-mass black holes are plausible candidates for the central engines of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We investigate one-dimensional global solutions of NDAFs, taking account of general relativity in Kerr metric, neutrino physics and nucleosynthesis more precisely than previous works. We calculate sixteen solutions with different characterized accretion rates and black hole spins to exhibit the radial distributions of various physical properties in NDAFs. \iffalse We find that the gas pressure and the neutrino cooling always become dom…
The aberrated radiation pressure at the inner edge of the accretion disk around an astrophysical black hole imparts a relative azimuthal velocity on the electrons with respect to the ions which gives rise to a ring electric current that generates large scale poloidal magnetic field loops. This is the Cosmic Battery established by Contopoulos and Kazanas in 1998. In the present work we perform realistic numerical simulations of this important astrophysical mechanism in advection-dominated accretion flows-ADAF. We confirm the original prediction that the inner parts of the loops are continuously…
We take the vertical distribution of the radial and azimuthal velocity into account in spherical coordinates, and find that the analytic relation c_{s0}/(v_K Θ) = [(γ-1)/(2γ)]^{1/2} is valid for both geometrically thin and thick accretion flows, where c_{s0} is the sound speed on the equatorial plane, v_K is the Keplerian velocity, Θis the half-opening angle of the flow, and γis the adiabatic index.
The presence of radiatively driven outflows is well established in ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). These outflows are optically thick and can reprocess a significant fraction of the accretion luminosity. Assuming isotropic emission, escaping radiation from the outflow's photosphere has the potential to irradiate the outer disc. Here, we explore how the atmosphere of the outer disc would respond to such irradiation, and specifically whether unstable heating may lead to significant mass loss via thermally-driven winds. We find that, for a range of physically relevant system parameters, this …
Flickering, and more specifically aperiodic broad-band variability, is an important phenomenon used in understanding the geometry and dynamics of accretion flows. Although the inner regions of accretion flows are known to generate variability on relatively fast timescales, the broad-band variability generated in the outer regions have mostly remained elusive due to their long intrinsic variability timescales. Ultra-compact AM CVn systems are relatively small when compared to other accreting binaries and are well suited to search and characterise low frequency variability. Here we present the f…
We present global solutions of optically thin, two-temperature black hole accretion disks incorporating magnetic fields. We assume that the πϕ-component of the Maxwell stress is proportional to the total pressure, and prescribe the radial dependence of the magnetic flux advection rate in order to complete the set of basic equations. We obtained magnetically supported (low-β) disk solutions, whose luminosity exceeds the maximum luminosity for an advection-dominated accretion flow (ADAF), L > 0.4 α^2 L_Edd, where L_Edd is the Eddington luminosity. The accretion flow is composed of the outer ADAF…
In our recent paper, we have obtained a model solution to the problem of radiation-inefficient accretion flows (RIAFs) in a global magnetic field (so called, resistive RIAF model), which is asymptotically exact in outer regions of such flows forming accretion disks. When extrapolated inwardly, the model predicts a local enhancement of the vertical Poynting flux within a small radius that may be regarded as the disk inner-edge. This fact has been interpreted as the origin of power source for the astrophysical jets observationally well-known to be ejected from this type of accretion disks. Since…
Observations of black hole X-ray binaries and active galactic nuclei indicate that the accretion flows around black holes are composed of hot and cold gas, which have been theoretically described in terms of either a hot geometrically thick corona lying above and below a cold geometrically thin disk or an inner advection dominated accretion flow connected to an outer thin disk. This article reviews the accretion flows around black holes, with an emphasis on the physics that determines the configuration of hot and cold accreting gas, and how the configuration varies with the accretion rate and …
The dissociation and ionization of hydrogen, during the formation of giant planets via core accretion, reduces the effective adiabatic index $γ$ of the gas and could trigger dynamical instability. We generalize the analysis of Chandrasekhar, who determined that the threshold for instability of a self-gravitating hydrostatic body lies at $γ=4/3$, to account for the presence of a planetary core, which we model as an incompressible fluid. We show that the dominant effect of the core is to stabilize the envelope to radial perturbations, in some cases completely (i.e. for all $γ> 1$). When instabil…
We revisit Bondi accretion - steady-state, adiabatic, spherical gas flow onto a Schwarzschild black hole at rest in an asymptotically homogeneous medium - for stiff polytropic equations of state (EOSs) with adiabatic indices $Γ> 5/3$. A general relativistic treatment is required to determine their accretion rates, for which we provide exact expressions. We discuss several qualitative differences between results for soft and stiff EOSs - including the appearance of a minimum steady-state accretion rate for EOSs with $Γ\geq 5/3$ - and explore limiting cases in order to examine these differences.…
We study the relativistic Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion onto a Schwarzschild black hole (BH), which is surrounded by rigid and small, randomly distributed, bodies. These bodies are idealized representations of substructure like stars passing close to the BH, bubbles created by stellar winds or cold clumps. We explore cases where the filling factor of these bodies is small. The flow is assumed to be adiabatic and move supersonically towards the black hole. The interaction with these rigid obstacles transforms ram pressure of the flow into thermal pressure through bow shocks, slowing down the f…
(Abridged) We test how accurately the smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) numerical technique can follow spherically-symmetric Bondi accretion. Using the 3D SPH code GADGET-3, we perform simulations of gas accretion onto a central supermassive black hole (SMBH) of mass 10^8 M_sun within the radial range of 0.1 - 200 pc. We carry out simulations without and with radiative heating by a central X-ray corona and radiative cooling. For an adiabatic case, the radial profiles of hydrodynamical properties match the Bondi solution, except near the inner and outer radius of the computational domain. W…
We reformulate the adiabatic inflow-outflow (ADIOS) model for radiatively inefficient accretion flows, treating the inflow and outflow zones on an equal footing. For purely adiabatic flows (i.e., with no radiative losses), we show that the mass flux in each zone must satisfy Mdot ~ R^n with n=1, in contrast to previous work in which 0<n< 1 is a free parameter but in rough agreement with numerical simulations. We also demonstrate that the resulting two-zone ADIOS models are not dynamically self-consistent without the introduction of an energy source close in to the central regions of the flow; …
We present fast (~200s sampling) ugriz photometry of the low mass AGN NGC 4395 with the Liverpool Telescope, followed by very fast (3s sampling) us, gs, rs, is and zs simultaneous monitoring with HiPERCAM on the 10.4m GTC. These observations provide the fastest ever AGN multiband photometry and very precise lag measurements. Unlike in all other AGN, gs lags us by a large amount, consistent with disc reprocessing but not with reprocessing in the Broad Line Region (BLR). There is very little increase in lag with wavelength at long wavelengths, indicating an outer edge (Rout) to the reprocessor. …
Luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN) and X-Ray binaries (XRBs) often contain geometrically thin, radiatively cooled accretion discs. According to theory, these are -- in many cases -- initially highly misaligned with the black hole equator. In this work, we present the first general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic simulations of very thin (h/r~0.015-0.05) accretion discs around rapidly spinning (a~0.9) black holes and tilted by 45-65 degrees. We show that the inner regions of the discs with h/r<0.03 align with the black hole equator, though out to smaller radii than predicted by analytic wor…
We formulate and solve the problem of spherically symmetric, steady state, adiabatic accretion onto a Schwarzschild-like black hole obtained recently. We derive the general analytic expressions for the critical points, the critical velocity, the critical speed of sound, and subsequently the mass accretion rate. The case for polytropic gas is discussed in detail. We find the parameter characterizing the breaking of Lorentz symmetry will slow down the mass accretion rate, while has no effect on the gas compression and the temperature profile below the critical radius and at the event horizon.
We present an analytic solution for accretion of a gaseous medium with adiabatic equation of state onto a charged dilaton black hole which moves at a constant velocity. We determine the four-velocity of accreted flow and find that it possesses axial symmetry. We obtain the particle number density and the accretion rate which depend on the mass, the magnetic charge, and the dilation of black hole, meaning that these parameters take important roles in the process of accretion. Possible theoretical and observational constraints on the parameter related to the dilation are discussed. The results m…
During the accretion phase of a core-collapse supernovae, large amplitude turbulence is generated by the combination of the standing accretion shock instability and convection driven by neutrino heating. The turbulence directly affects the dynamics of the explosion, but there is also the possibility of an additional, indirect, feedback mechanism due to the effect turbulence can have upon neutrino flavor evolution and thus the neutrino heating. In this paper we consider the effect of turbulence during the accretion phase upon neutrino evolution, both numerically and analytically. Adopting repre…
