We take the vertical distribution of the radial and azimuthal velocity into account in spherical coordinates, and find that the analytic relation c_{s0}/(v_K Θ) = [(γ-1)/(2γ)]^{1/2} is valid for both geometrically thin and thick accretion flows, where c_{s0} is the sound speed on the equatorial plane, v_K is the Keplerian velocity, Θis the half-opening angle of the flow, and γis the adiabatic index.
If accretion disc contains weak frozen-in entangled magnetic fields, their dynamical effect may be important inside the last stable orbit because of the decompression near the sonic point. Here, I consider the radial and vertical structure of a nearly free-falling flow inside the last stable orbit of a thin disc around a Kerr black hole. The thickness of such a flow is determined primarily by the vertical stress created by radial and azimuthal magnetic fields. The thickness is predicted to oscillate vertically around its equilibrium value determined by the magnetic field balance with gravity. …
X-ray reverberation in AGN, believed to be the result of the reprocessing of corona photons by the underlying accretion disk, has allowed us to probe the properties of the inner-most regions of the accretion flow and the central black hole. This process is modeled via raytracing in the Kerr metric, with the disk thickness almost ubiquitously assumed to be negligible (razor-thin) and the corona commonly approximated as a point source located along the polar axis (a lamppost). In this work, we use the new raytracing suite, Fenrir, to explore the effect that accretion disk geometry has on reverbe…
The evolution of the magnetic field from the large-scale dynamo is considered a central feature of the accretion disk around a black hole. The resulting low-frequency oscillations introduced from the growth and decay of the field strength, along with the change in field orientation, play an integral role in the accretion disk behavior. Despite the importance of this process and how commonly it is invoked to explain variable features, it still remains poorly understood. We present a study of the dynamo using a suite of four global, high-resolution, MHD accretion disk simulations. We systematica…
General relativistic, axisymmetric flow of low angular momentum accretion around a Kerr black hole can have certain geometric configuration where the flow is maintained in hydrostatic equilibrium along the vertical direction (direction orthogonal to the equatorial plane of the flow). The flow thickness for such accretion models becomes a function of the local radial distance measured from the black hole horizon. There are three types of functions defined in the literature which resemble the thickness of the flow for such a configuration. We formulate the equations governing the steady state as…
The analysis of the thermal spectrum of geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disks of black holes, the so-called continuum-fitting method, is one of the leading techniques for measuring black hole spins. Current models normally approximate the disk as infinitesimally thin, while in reality the disk thickness is finite and increases as the black hole mass accretion rate increases. Here we present an XSPEC model to calculate the multi-temperature blackbody spectrum of a thin accretion disk of finite thickness around a Kerr black hole. We test our new model with an RXTE observation of…
Polish doughnuts (PDs) are geometrically thick disks that rotate with super-Keplerian velocities in their innermost parts, and whose long and narrow funnels along rotation axes collimate the emerging radiation into beams. In this paper we construct an extremal family of PDs that maximize both geometrical thickness and radiative efficiency. We then derive upper limits for these quantities and subsequently for the related ability to collimate radiation. PDs with such extreme properties may explain the observed properties of the ultraluminous X-ray sources without the need for the black hole mass…
A two dimensional numerical model in the axisymmetric approximation that describes the flow structure in the magnetosphere of the white dwarf in the EX Hya system has been developed. Results of simulations show that the accretion in EX Hya proceeds via accretion columns, that are not closed and have curtain-like shapes. The thickness of the accretion curtains depends only weakly on the thickness of the accretion disk. This thickness developed in the simulations does not agree with observations. It is concluded that the main reason for the formation of thick accretion curtains in the used model…
By taking into account the effect of toroidal magnetic field and its correspond heating, we determine the thickness of advection-dominated accretion flows. We consider an axisymetric, rotating, steady viscous-resistive, magnetized accretion flow under an advection dominated stage. The dominant mechanism of energy dissipation is assumed to be turbulence viscosity and magnetic diffusivity. We adopt a self-similar assumption in the radial direction to obtain the dynamical quantities, that is, radial, azimuthal, sound and Alfv\' en velocities. Our results show the vertical component of magnetic fo…
The thickness of a slim disk is determined by the balance between the radiation force and the vertical component of the gravity of the black hole (BH). It was found that vertical gravity increases with the disk height, and it will decrease with the disk height if the disk thickness is above a critical value, which implies that gas at the disk surface may be driven into outflows by radiation force when the disk thickness surpasses the critical value. In this work, we derive a global solution to a slim disk with radiation-driven outflows. We find that the outflows are driven from the disk surfac…
We present the effects of ordered large scale magnetic field on the structure of supercritical accretion flow in the presence of outflow. In the cylindrical coordinates ($r, φ,z$), We write the 1.5 dimensional, the steady state ($\frac{\partial}{\partial t}=0$) and axisymmetric ($\frac{\partial}{\partial φ}=0$) inflow-outflow equations by using the self similar solutions. Also a model for radiation pressure supported accretion flow threaded by both toroidal and vertical components of magnetic field has been formulated. For studying the outflows, we adopt a radius dependent mass accretion rate …
X-ray reflection spectroscopy is a powerful tool for probing the strong gravity region of black holes and can be used for testing general relativity in the strong field regime. Simplifications of the available relativistic reflection models limit the capability of performing accurate measurements of the properties of black holes. In this paper, we present an extension of the model RELXILL_NK in which the accretion disk has a finite thickness rather than being infinitesimally thin. We employ the accretion disk geometry proposed by Taylor & Reynolds (2018) and we construct relativistic reflectio…
Force due to the self-gravity of the disc in the vertical direction is considered to study its possible effects on the structure of a magnetized advection-dominated accretion disc. We present steady-sate self similar solutions for the dynamical structure of such a type of the accretion flows. Our solutions imply reduced thickness of the disc because of the self-gravity. It also imply that the thickness of the disc will increase by adding the magnetic field strength.
Magnetically arrested accretion flows are thought to fuel some of the supermassive black holes and to power their relativistic jets. We calculate and study a time sequence of linear and circular polarimetric images of numerical, high resolution and long duration simulations of magnetically dominated flows to investigate observational signatures of strong magnetic fields near the event horizon of a non-rotating black hole. We find that the magnitude of resolved linear and circular polarizations is rather sensitive to the assumption of the coupling of electron and ions in the accretion flow. Mod…
Hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamic simulations of hot accretion flow have indicated that there is an inward decreasing of mass accretion rate with decreasing radius. Consequently, we have a flatter density profile ($ρ\propto r^{-p}$ with $p\propto 1.5-s$ in the case of $\dot{M}\propto r^{s}$, $0 \leq s<1$) compared to the case of a constant accretion rate (($ρ\propto r^{-\frac{3}{2}}$). In order to describe this behavior two models have been proposed: inflow-outflow solution and convection-dominated accretion flows. We have studied the properties of a hot accretion flow in the presence of c…
Much of the parameter space relevant to the evolution of astrophysical circumbinary accretion discs remains unexplored. We have carried out a suite of circumbinary disc simulations surveying both disc thickness and kinematic viscosity, using both constant-$ν$ and constant-$α$ prescriptions. We focus primarily on disc aspect ratios between $0.1$ and $0.033$, and on viscosities between $ν=0.0005$ and $ν=0.008$ (in units of binary semi-major axis and orbital frequency), and specialise to circular equal-mass binaries. Both factors strongly influence the evolution of the binary semi-major axis: at …
In a previous paper, we presented an extension of our reflection model RELXILL_NK to include the finite thickness of the accretion disk following the prescription in Taylor & Reynolds (2018). In this paper, we apply our model to fit the 2013 simultaneous observations by NuSTAR and XMM-Newton of the supermassive black hole in MCG-06-30-15 and the 2019 NuSTAR observation of the Galactic black hole in EXO 1846-031. The high-quality data of these spectra had previously led to precise black hole spin measurements and very stringent constraints on possible deviations from the Kerr metric. We find th…
The relativistically-broadened reflection spectrum, observed in both AGN and X-ray binaries, has proven to be a powerful probe of the properties of black holes and the environments in which they reside. Being emitted from the inner-most regions of the accretion disk, this X-ray spectral component carries with it information not only about the plasma that resides in these extreme conditions, but also the black hole spin, a marker of the formation and accretion history of these objects. The models currently used to interpret the reflection spectrum are often simplistic, however, approximating th…

The present study examines self-similarity evolution of advection dominated accretion flow (ADAF) in the presence of a toroidal magnetic field. In this research, it was assumed that the angular momentum transport is due to viscous turbulence and $α$-prescription was used for kinematics coefficient of viscosity. In order to solve the integrated equations which govern the dynamical behavior of the accretion flow, self-similar solution was used. The solutions show that the behavior of physical quantities in a dynamical ADAF are different from steady accretion flow and a disk with polytropic appro…

Low angular momentum, general relativistic, axially symmetric accretion of hydrodynamic fluid onto Schwarzschild black holes may undergo more than one critical transition. To obtain the stationary integral solutions corresponding to such multi-critical accretion flow, one needs to employ numerical solutions of the corresponding fluid dynamics equations. In the present work, we develop a {\it{completely analytical}} solution scheme which may be used to find several trans-critical flow behaviours of aforementioned accretion, without explicitly solving the flow equations numerically. We study all…
Many statistical properties of the aperiodic variability observed in X-ray radiation from accreting compact objects can be naturally explained by the propagating fluctuations model. This considers variations in mass accretion rate to be stirred up throughout the accretion flow. Variations from the outer regions of the accretion flow will propagate towards the central object, modulating the variations from the inner regions and eventually modulating the radiation, giving rise to the observed linear RMS-flux relation and also Fourier frequency dependent time lags. Previous treatments of this mod…
The standard general relativistic model of a razor-thin accretion disk around a black hole, developed by Novikov & Thorne (NT) in 1973, assumes the shear stress vanishes at the radius of the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) and that, outside the ISCO, the shear stress is produced by an effective turbulent viscosity. However, astrophysical accretion disks are not razor-thin, it is uncertain whether the shear stress necessarily vanishes at the ISCO, and the magnetic field, which is thought to drive turbulence in disks, may contain large-scale structures that do not behave like a simple loc…
We present a relativistic model for the stationary axisymmetric accretion flow of a rotating cloud of non-interacting particles falling onto a Kerr black hole. Based on a ballistic approximation, streamlines are described analytically in terms of timelike geodesics, while a simple numerical scheme is introduced for calculating the density field. A novel approach is presented for describing all of the possible types of orbit by means of a single analytic expression. This model is a useful tool for highlighting purely relativistic signatures in the accretion flow dynamics coming from a strong gr…
When an accretion disk surrounds a binary rotating in the same sense, the binary exerts strong torques on the gas. Analytic work in the 1D approximation indicated that these torques sharply diminish or even eliminate accretion from the disk onto the binary. However, recent 2D and 3D simulational work has shown at most modest diminution. We present new MHD simulations demonstrating that for binaries with mass ratios of 1 and 0.1 there is essentially no difference between the accretion rate at large radius in the disk and the accretion rate onto the binary. To resolve the discrepancy with earlie…
We develop the theoretical model for the analytic description of hydrodynamic jets from protostellar disks employing the Beltrami-Bernoulli flow configuration of disk-jet structure. For this purpose we extend the standard turbulent viscosity prescription and derive several classes of analytic solutions using the flow parametrization in self-similar variables. Derived solutions describe the disk-jet structure, where for the first time jet properties are analytically linked with the properties of the accretion disk flow. The ratio of the jet ejection and disk accretion velocities is controlled b…
The existence of outflow in accretion flows is confirmed by observations and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) simulations. In this paper, we study outflows of accretion flows in the presence of resistivity and toroidal magnetic field. The mechanism of energy dissipation in the flow is assumed to be the viscosity and the magnetic diffusivity due to turbulence in the accretion flow. It is also assumed that the magnetic diffusivity and the kinematic viscosity are not constant and vary by position and $α$-prescription is used for them. The influence of outflow emanating from accretion disc is considered…
Emission from an accretion disc around compact objects, such as neutron stars and black holes, is expected to be significantly polarized. The polarization can be used to put constraints on geometrical and physical parameters of the compact sources -- their radii, masses and spins -- as well as to determine the orbital parameters. The radiation escaping from the innermost parts of the disc is strongly affected by the gravitational field of the compact object and relativistic velocities of the matter. The straightforward calculation of the observed polarization signatures involves computationall…
We investigated a semi-analytic and numerical model to study the geometrically thin and optically thick accretion disk around Maclaurin spheroid (MS). The main interest is in the inner region of the so called α-disk, α being the viscosity parameter. Analytical calculations are done assuming radiation pressure and gas pressure dominated for close to Eddington mass accretion rate and $\dot{M}\lesssim 0.1\dot{M_{Edd}}$ respectively. We found that the change in eccentricity of MS gives a change at high frequency region in the emitted spectra. We found that disk parameters are dependent on eccentri…
We study the accretion flow from a counter-rotating torus orbiting a central Kerr black hole (BH). We characterize the flow properties at the turning point of the accreting matter flow from the orbiting torus, defined by the condition $u^ϕ= 0$ on the flow torodial velocity. The counter-rotating accretion flow and jet-like flow turning point location along BH rotational axis is given. Some properties of the counter-rotating flow thickness and counter-rotating tori energetics are studied. The maximum amount of matter swallowed by the BH from the counter-rotating tori is determined by the backgrou…
We study how axisymmetric magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) accretion flows depend on gamma adiabatic index in the polytropic equation of state. This work is an extension of Moscibrodzka & Proga (2008), where we investigated the gamma dependence of 2-D Bondi-like accretion flows in the hydrodynamical (HD) limit. Our main goal is to study if simulations for various gamma can give us insights into to the problem of various modes of accretion observed in several types of accretion systems such as black hole binaries (BHB), active galactic nuclei (AGN), and gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We find that for gamm…
A stellar mass black hole (BH) surrounded by a neutrino-dominated accretion flow (NDAF) has been discussed in a number of works as the central engine of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). It is widely believed that NDAF cannot liberate enough energy for bright GRBs. However, these works have been based on the assumption of "no torque" boundary condition, which is invalid when the disk is magnetized. In this paper, we present both numerical and analytical solutions for NDAFs with non-zero boundary stresses, and reexamine their properties. We find that NDAF with such boundary torque can be powerful enough…
Turbulent state of spectrally stable shear flows may be developed and sustained according to the bypass scenario of transition. If it works in non-magnetised boundless and homogeneous quasi-Keplerian flow, transiently growing shearing vortices should supply turbulence with energy. Employing the large shearing box approximation, as well as a set of global disc models, we study the optimal growth of the shearing vortices in such a flow in the whole range of azimuthal length-scales, $λ_y$, as compared to the flow scale-height, $H$. It is shown that with the account of the viscosity the highest po…
We consider spherically symmetric accretion onto a small, possibly primordial, black hole residing at the center of a neutron star governed by a cold nuclear equation of state (EOS). We generalize the relativistic Bondi solution for such EOSs, approximated by piecewise polytropes, and thereby obtain analytical expressions for the steady-state matter profiles and accretion rates. We compare these rates with those found by time-dependent, general relativistic hydrodynamical simulations upon relaxation and find excellent agreement. We consider several different candidate EOSs, neutron star masses…
We present analytical solutions for the thermodynamic (temperature, pressure, density, etc.) properties of thin accretion flows in the region within the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a Kerr black hole, the first analytical solutions of their kind. These solutions are constructed in the adiabatic limit and neglect radiative losses, an idealisation valid for a restricted region of parameter space. We highlight a number of remarkable properties of these solutions, including that these solutions cool for radii $r_I/2 < r < r_I$, before increasing in temperature for $0 < r < r_I/2$, ind…
We apply the theory of algebraic polynomials to analytically study the transonic properties of general relativistic hydrodynamic axisymmetric accretion onto non-rotating astrophysical black holes. For such accretion phenomena, the conserved specific energy of the flow, which turns out to be one of the two first integrals of motion in the system studied, can be expressed as a 8$^{th}$ degree polynomial of the critical point of the flow configuration. We then construct the corresponding Sturm's chain algorithm to calculate the number of real roots lying within the astrophysically relevant domain…
We construct a general relativistic model for the accretion flow of a rotating finite cloud of non-interacting particles infalling onto a Schwarzschild black hole. The streamlines start at a spherical shell, where boundary conditions are fixed, and are followed down to the point at which they either cross the black hole horizon or become incorporated into an equatorial thin disc. Analytic expressions for the streamlines and the velocity field are given, in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions, under the assumptions of stationarity and ballistic motion. A novel approach allows us to describe all …
For axially symmetric accretion maintained in hydrostatic equilibrium along the vertical direction, we investigate how the characteristic features of the embedded acoustic geometry depends on the background Kerr metric, and how such dependence is governed by three different expressions of the thickness of the matter flow. We first obtain the location of the sonic points and stationary shock between the sonic points. We then linearly perturb the flow to obtain the corresponding metric elements of the acoustic space-time. We thus construct the causal structure to establish that the sonic points …
An axion cloud surrounding a supermassive black hole can be naturally produced through the superradiance process. Its existence can be examined by the axion induced birefringence effect. It predicts an oscillation of the electric vector position angle of linearly polarized radiations. Stringent constraints of the existence of the axion in a particular mass window has been obtained based on the recent Event Horizon Telescope measurement on M87$^\star$. The future Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations will be able to measure the vicinity of many supermassive black holes, thus it …
