A black hole (BH) travelling through a uniform, gaseous medium is described by Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion. If the medium is magnetized, then the black hole can produce relativistic outflows. We performed the first 3D, general-relativistic magnetohydrodynamics simulations of BHL accretion onto rapidly rotating black holes using the code H-AMR, where we mainly varied the strength of a background magnetic field that threads the medium. We found that the ensuing accretion continuously drags to the BH the magnetic flux, which accumulates near the event horizon until it becomes dynamically important. Depending on the strength of the background magnetic field, the BHs can sometimes launch relativistic jets with high enough power to drill out of the inner accretion flow, become bent by the headwind, and escape to large distances. While for stronger background magnetic fields the jets are continuously powered, at weaker field strengths they are intermittent, turning on and off depending on the fluctuating gas and magnetic flux distributions near the event horizon. We find that our jets reach extremely high efficiencies of $\sim100-300\%$, even in the absence of an accretion disk. We also calculated the drag forces exerted by the gas onto to the BH, finding that the presence of magnetic fields causes drag forces to be much less efficient than in unmagnetized BHL accretion, and sometimes become negative, accelerating the BH rather than slowing it down. Our results extend classical BHL accretion to rotating BHs moving through magnetized media and demonstrate that accretion and drag are significantly altered in this environment.
We investigate the Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion of dusty-gas for the case where the central source is the black hole accretion disk. By solving the equation of motion taking into account the radiation force which is attenuated by the dust absorption, we reveal the steady structure of the flow around the central object. We find that the mass accretion rate tends to increase with an increase of the optical thickness of the flow and the gas can accrete even if the disk luminosity exceeds the Eddington luminosity for the dusty-gas, since the radiation force is weakened by the attenuation via the dust…
We use 2D (axisymmetric) and 3D hydrodynamic simulations to study Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion with and without transverse upstream gradients. We mainly focus on the regime of high (upstream) Mach number, weak upstream gradients and small accretor size, which is relevant to neutron star (NS) accretion in wind-fed Supergiant X-ray binaries (SgXBs). We present a systematic exploration of the flow in this regime. When there are no upstream gradients, the flow is always stable regardless of accretor size or Mach number. For finite upstream gradients, there are three main types of behavior…
An isolated star moving supersonically through a uniform gas accretes material from its gravitationally-induced wake. The rate of accretion is set by the accretion radius of the star and is well-described by classical Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton theory. Stars, however, are not born in isolation. They form in clusters where they accrete material that is influenced by all the stars in the cluster. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of clusters of individual accretors embedded in a uniform-density wind in order to study how the accretion rates experienced by individual cluster member…
Binary stars are common. While only those with small separations may exchange gas with one another, even the widest binaries interact with their gaseous surroundings. Drag forces and accretion rates dictate how these systems are transformed by these interactions. We perform three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton flows, in which a binary moves supersonically relative to a homogeneous medium, using the adaptive mesh refinement code FLASH. We simulate a range of values of the initial semi-major axis of the orbit relative to the gravitational focusing impact parameter …
Detonation initiation in a reactive medium can be achieved by an externally created shock wave. Supersonic flow onto a gravitating center, known as Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) accretion, is a natural shock wave creating process, but, to our knowledge, a reactive medium has never been considered in the literature. Here, we conduct an order of magnitude analysis to investigate under which conditions the shock-induced reaction zone recouples to the shock front. We derive three semianalytical criteria for self-sustained detonation ignition. We apply these criteria to the special situation where a …

Three-dimensional radiation hydrodynamics simulations of wandering intermediate-mass black holes considering the anisotropic radiation and dust sublimation
Several processes may limit the accretion rate onto a super-massive black hole (SMBH). Two processes that are commonly considered (e.g., for sub-grid prescriptions) are Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion and the Eddington limit. A third one is AGN wind feedback. It has been long suggested that such a wind feedback regulates the final SMBH mass, however, it has been shown recently that AGN winds can also regulate the average accretion rate at a level consistent with observations of high redshift AGNs. In this paper we study the effect of wind feedback on the accretion rate using 2D, high resolutio…
We compute the forces, torque and rate of work on the companion-core binary due to drag in global simulations of common envelope (CE) evolution for three different companion masses. Our simulations help to delineate regimes when conventional analytic drag force approximations are applicable. During and just prior to the first periastron passage of the in-spiral phase, the drag force is reasonably approximated by conventional analytic theory and peaks at values proportional to the companion mass. Good agreement between global and local 3D "wind tunnel" simulations, including similar net drag fo…
We use the stellar evolution code MESA to study the negative jet feedback mechanism in common envelope jets supernovae (CEJSNe) where a neutron star (NS) launches jets in the envelope of a red supergiant (RSG), and find that the feedback reduces the mass accretion rate to be $χ_{\rm j} \simeq 0.04-0.3$ times the mass accretion rate without the operation of jets. We mimic the effect of the jets on the RSG envelope by depositing the energy that the jets carry into the envelope zones outside the NS orbit. The energy deposition inflates the envelope, therefore reducing the density in the NS vicini…
Whilst in galaxy-size simulations, supermassive black holes (SMBH) are entirely handled by sub-grid algorithms, computational power now allows the accretion radius of such objects to be resolved in smaller scale simulations. In this paper, we investigate the impact of resolution on two commonly used SMBH sub-grid algorithms; the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) formula for accretion onto a point mass, and the related estimate of the drag force exerted onto a point mass by a gaseous medium. We find that when the accretion region around the black hole scales with resolution, and the BHL formula is ev…
We study accretion environments of active galactic nuclei when a super-massive black hole wanders in a circum-nuclear region and passes through an interstellar medium there. It is expected that a Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton type accretion of the interstellar matter takes place and an accretion stream of matter trapped by the black hole gravitational field appears from a tail shock region. Since the trapped matter is likely to have a certain amount of specific angular momentum, the accretion stream eventually forms an accretion ring around the black hole. According to the recent study, the accretion …
We present a novel analytic model of relativistic wind accretion on to a Schwarzschild black hole. This model constitutes a general relativistic extension of the classical model of wind accretion by Bondi, Hoyle, and Lyttleton (BHL). As in BHL, this model is based on the assumptions of steady state, axisymmetry, and ballistic motion. Analytic expressions are provided for the wind streamlines while simple numerical schemes are presented for calculating the corresponding accretion rate and density field. The resulting accretion rate is greater in the relativistic model when compared to the Newto…
The accretion process in a typical S-type symbiotic star, targeting~AG Draconis, is investigated through 3D hydrodynamical simulations using the FLASH code. Regardless of the wind velocity of the giant star, an accretion disk surrounding the white dwarf is always formed. In the wind models faster than the orbital velocity of the white dwarf, the disk size and accretion rate are consistent with the predictions under the Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton (BHL) condition. In slower wind models, unlike the BHL predictions, the disk size does not grow and the accretion rate increases to a considerably higher l…
Accretion disks surrounding compact objects, and other environmental factors, deviate satellites from geodetic motion. Unfortunately, setting up the equations of motion for such relativistic trajectories is not as simple as in Newtonian mechanics. The principle of general (or Lorentz) covariance and the mass-shell constraint make it difficult to parametrize physically adequate 4-forces. Here, we propose a solution to this old problem. We apply our framework to several conservative and dissipative forces. In particular, we propose covariant formulations for Hooke's law and the constant force, a…
A compact object moving relative to surrounding gas accretes material and perturbs the density of gas in its vicinity. In the classical picture of Bondi-Hoyle-Lyttleton accretion, the perturbation takes the form of an overdense wake behind the object, which exerts a dynamical friction drag. We use hydrodynamic simulations to investigate how the accretion rate and strength of dynamical friction are modified by the presence of outflow from the compact object. We show that the destruction of the wake by an outflow reduces dynamical friction, and reverses its sign when the outflow is strong enough…
We investigate a possibility to find an accreting isolated black hole (IBH) with mass $1-100~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ within Central Galactic Molecular Zone (CMZ) in the submillimetre and IR spectral range with help of planned space observatories James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and Millimetron (MM). We assume the spherical mode of accretion. We develop the simplest possible quantitative model of the formation of radiation spectrum in this range due to synchrotron emission and show that it fully agrees with the more complicated model of Ipser and Price 1982 for expected values of accretion rate. With the goal of providing more accurate and realistic estimates of the secular behavior of the mass accretion and drag rates in the "common-envelope" scenario encountered when a black hole or a neutron star moves in the stellar envelope of a red supergiant star, we have carried out the first general relativistic simulations of the accretion flow onto a nonrotating black hole moving supersonically in a medium with regular but different density gradients. The simulations reveal that the supersonic motion always rapidly reaches a stationary state and it produces a shock cone in the downstream pa…
