We prove the following result: Let $(\mathcal{O},g_0)$ be a complete, connected 3-orbifold with uniformly positive scalar curvature, with bounded geometry, and containing no bad 2-suborbifolds. Then there is a finite collection $\mathcal{F}$ of spherical 3-orbifolds, such that $\mathcal{O}$ is diffeomorphic to a (possibly infinite) orbifold connected sum of copies of members in $\mathcal{F}$. This extends work of Perelman and Bessi$\grave{e}$res-Besson-Maillot. The proof uses Ricci flow with surgery on complete 3-orbifolds, and are along the lines of the author's previous work on 4-orbifolds with positive isotropic curvature.
In this paper we give sufficient conditions on a compact orbifold with an extremal Kaehler metric to admit a resolution with an extremal Kaehler metric. We also complete the Kaehler constant scalar curvature case.
In this paper, given a compact Kcsc orbifolds of any dimension and with nontrivial holomorphic vector fields, we find sufficient conditions on the position of singular points in order to admit a Kcsc desingularization, generalizing the result of the first author with F. Pacard in the case of blowing up smooth points. A series of explicit examples are discussed.
We prove the following result: Let $(X,g_0)$ be a complete, connected 4-manifold with uniformly positive isotropic curvature and with bounded geometry. Then there is a finite collection $\mathcal{F}$ of manifolds of the form $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{R} /G$, where $G$ is a discrete subgroup of the isometry group of the round cylinder $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{R}$ on which $G$ acts freely, such that $X$ is diffeomorphic to a possibly infinite connected sum of $\mathbb{S}^4,\mathbb{RP}^4$ and members of $\mathcal{F}$. This extends recent work of Chen-Tang-Zhu and Huang. We also extend the a…
We show that a Laplace isospectral family of two dimensional Riemannian orbifolds, sharing a lower bound on sectional curvature, contains orbifolds of only a finite number of orbifold category diffeomorphism types. We also show that orbifolds of only finitely many orbifold diffeomorphism types may arise in any collection of 2-orbifolds satisfying lower bounds on sectional curvature and volume, and an upper bound on diameter. An argument converting spectral data to geometric bounds shows that the first result is a consequence of the second.
We prove that any asymptotically locally Euclidean scalar-flat Kähler 4-orbifold whose isometry group contains a 2-torus is isometric, up to an orbifold covering, to a quaternionic-complex quotient of a $k$-dimensional quaternionic vector space by a $(k-1)$-torus. In order to do so, we first prove that any compact anti-self-dual 4-orbifold with positive Euler characteristic whose isometry group contains a 2-torus is conformally equivalent, up to an orbifold covering, to a quaternionic quotient of $k$-dimensional quaternionic projective space by a $(k-1)$-torus.
One of the main methods of constructing new spaces with positive or almost positive curvature is the study of biquotients first studied in detail by Eschenburg. We classify orbifold biquotients of the Lie Group $SU(3)$, and construct a new example of a 5-dimensional orbifold with almost positive curvature. Furthermore, we extend the work of Florit and Ziller on the geometric properties of the orbifolds $SU(3)//T^2$.
We characterize Riemannian orbifolds with an upper curvature bound in the Alexandrov sense as reflectofolds, i.e. Riemannian orbifolds all of whose local groups are generated by reflections, with the same upper bound on the sectional curvature. Combined with a result by Lytchak--Thorbergsson this implies that a quotient of a Riemannian manifold by a closed group of isometries has locally bounded curvature (from above) in the Alexandrov sense if and only if it is a reflectofold.
We construct bi-Lipschitz embeddings into Euclidean space for manifolds and orbifolds of bounded diameter and curvature. The distortion and dimension of such embeddings is bounded by diameter, curvature and dimension alone. Our results also apply for bounded subsets of complete Riemannian manifolds, and complete flat and elliptic orbifolds. Our approach is based on analysing the structure of a bounded curvature manifold at various scales by specializing methods from collapsing theory to a certain class of model spaces.
We show that any collection of n-dimensional orbifolds with sectional curvature and volume uniformly bounded below, diameter bounded above, and with only isolated singular points contains orbifolds of only finitely many orbifold homeomorphism types. This is a generalization to the orbifold category of a similar result for manifolds proven by Grove, Petersen, and Wu. It follows that any Laplace isospectral collection of orbifolds with sectional curvature uniformly bounded below and having only isolated singular points also contains only finitely many orbifold homeomorphism types. The main steps…
We embed polarised orbifolds with cyclic stabiliser groups into weighted projective space via a weighted form of Kodaira embedding. Dividing by the (non-reductive) automorphisms of weighted projective space then formally gives a moduli space of orbifolds. We show how to express this as a reductive quotient and so a GIT problem, thus defining a notion of stability for orbifolds. We then prove an orbifold version of Donaldson's theorem: the existence of an orbifold Kahler metric of constant scalar curvature implies K-semistability. By extending the notion of slope stability to orbifolds we there…
We study the prescribed scalar curvature problem in a conformal class on orbifolds with isolated singularities. We prove a compactness theorem in dimension $4$, and an existence theorem which holds in dimensions $n \geq 4$. This problem is more subtle than the manifold case since the positive mass theorem does not hold for ALE metrics in general. We also determine the $\rm{U}(2)$-invariant Leray-Schauder degree for a family of negative-mass orbifolds found by LeBrun.
We consider smooth solutions (M,g(t)), 0 <= t <T, to Ricci flow on compact, connected, four dimensional manifolds without boundary. We assume that the scalar curvature is bounded uniformly, and that T is finite. In this case, we show that the metric space (M,d(t)) associated to (M,g(t)) converges uniformly in the C^0 sense to (X,d), as t approaches T, where (X,d) is a C^0 Riemannian orbifold with at most finitely many orbifold points. Estimates on the rate of convergence near and away from the orbifold points are given. We also show that it is possible to continue the flow past (X,d) using the…
We show that a simply-connected closed four-dimensional Ricci flow whose Ricci curvature is uniformly bounded below and whose volume does not approach zero must converge to a $C^{0}$ orbifold at any finite-time singularity, so has an extension through the singularity via orbifold Ricci flow. Moreover, a Type-I blowup of the flow based at any orbifold point converges to a flat cone in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense, without passing to a subsequence. In addition, we prove $L^{p}$ bounds for the curvature tensor on time-slices for any $p<2$. In higher dimensions, we show that every singular point of …
We consider the $G$-invariant spectrum of the Laplacian on an orbit space $M/G$ where $M$ is a compact Riemannian manifold and $G$ acts by isometries. We generalize the Sunada-Pesce-Sutton technique to the $G$-invariant setting to produce pairs of isospectral non-isometric orbit spaces. One of these spaces is isometric to an orbifold with constant sectional curvature whereas the other admits non-orbifold singularities and therefore has unbounded sectional curvature. We therefore show that constant sectional curvature and the presence of non-orbifold singularities are inaudible to the G-invaria…
We study the geometry and topology of Riemannian 3-orbifolds which are locally volume collapsed with respect to a curvature scale. We show that a sufficiently collapsed closed 3-orbifold without bad 2-suborbifolds either admits a metric of nonnegative sectional curvature or satisfies Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture. We also prove a version with boundary. Kleiner and Lott independently proved similar results.
We first show that a Laplace isospectral family of Riemannian orbifolds, satisfying a lower Ricci curvature bound, contains orbifolds with points of only finitely many isotropy types. If we restrict our attention to orbifolds with only isolated singularities, and assume a lower sectional curvature bound, then the number of singular points in an orbifold in such an isospectral family is universally bounded above. These proofs employ spectral theory methods of Brooks, Perry and Petersen, as well as comparison geometry techniques developed by Grove and Petersen.
Given a (possibly singular) Riemannian foliation $\mathcal{F}$ with closed leaves on a compact manifold $M$ with an adapted metric, we investigate the wave trace invariants for the basic Laplacian about a non-zero period. We compare them to the wave invariants of the underlying Riemannian orbifold that exists when the leaves in the regular region are identified to points, equipped with the metric that is transverse to the leaves of the foliation. Recalling that the basic Laplacian differs from the underlying orbifold Laplacian by a term that is the mean curvature vector field associated to the…
The class of Riemannian orbifolds of dimension n defined by a lower bound on the sectional curvature and the volume and an upper bound on the diameter has only finitely many members up to orbifold homeomorphism. Furthermore, any class of isospectral Riemannian orbifolds with a lower bound on the sectional curvature is finite up to orbifold homeomorphism.
This work proves certain general orbifold compactness results for spaces of Riemannian metrics, generalizing earlier results along these lines for Einstein metrics or metrics with bounded Ricci curvature. This is then applied to prove such compactness for spaces of Bach-flat (for example half-conformally flat) metrics on 4-manifolds, and related results for metrics which are critical points of other natural Riemannian functionals on the space of metrics.
Let a compact Lie group act isometrically on a non-collapsing sequence of compact Alexandrov spaces with fixed dimension and uniform lower curvature and upper diameter bounds. If the sequence of actions is equicontinuous and converges in the equivariant Gromov--Hausdorff topology, then the limit space is equivariantly homeomorphic to spaces in the tail of the sequence. As a consequence, the class of Riemannian orbifolds of dimension $n$ defined by a lower bound on the sectional curvature and the volume and an upper bound on the diameter has only finitely many members up to orbifold homeomorphi…
We prove that the quotient space of a variationally complete group action is a good Riemannian orbifold. The result is generalized to singular Riemannian foliations without horizontal conjugate points.
In this paper we consider the Boothby-Wang construction over twist 1 stage 3 Bott orbifolds given in terms of the log pair $(S_{\bf n},Δ_{\bf m})$. We give explicit constant scalar curvature (CSC) Sasaki metrics either directly from CSC Kähler orbifold metrics or by using the weighted extremal approach of Apostolov and Calderbank. The Sasaki 7-manifolds (orbifolds) are finitely covered by compact simply connected manifolds (orbifolds) with the rational homology of the 2-fold connected sum of $S^2\times S^5$.
We prove the following result: Let $(X,g_0)$ be a complete, connected 4-manifold with uniformly positive isotropic curvature and with bounded geometry. Then there is a finite collection $\mathcal{F}$ of manifolds of the form $\mathbb{S}^3 \times \mathbb{R} /G$, where $G$ is a fixed point free discrete subgroup of the isometry group of the standard metric on $\mathbb{S}^3\times \mathbb{R}$, such that $X$ is diffeomorphic to a (possibly infinite) connected sum of copies of $\mathbb{S}^4,\mathbb{RP}^4$ and/or members of $\mathcal{F}$. This extends recent work of Chen-Tang-Zhu and Huang. We also e…
We consider the self-dual conformal classes on n#CP^2 discovered by LeBrun. These depend upon a choice of n points in hyperbolic 3-space, called monopole points. We investigate the limiting behavior of various constant scalar curvature metrics in these conformal classes as the points approach each other, or as the points tend to the boundary of hyperbolic space. There is a close connection to the orbifold Yamabe problem, which we show is not always solvable (in contrast to the case of compact manifolds). In particular, we show that there is no constant scalar curvature orbifold metric in the c…
We apply the Berglund-Hübsch transpose rule from BHK mirror symmetry to show that to an $n-1$-dimensional Calabi-Yau orbifold in weighted projective space defined by an invertible polynomial, we can associate four (possibly) distinct Sasaki manifolds of dimension $2n+1$ which are $n-1$-connected and admit a metric of positive Ricci curvature. We apply this theorem to show that for a given K3 orbifold, there exists four seven dimensional Sasakian manifolds of positive Ricci curvature, two of which are actually Sasaki-Einstein.
We study the size of the isometry group Isom(M, g) of Riemannian manifolds (M, g) as g varies. For M not admitting a circle action, we show that the order of Isom(M, g) can be universally bounded in terms of the bounds on Ricci curvature, diameter, and injectivity radius of M. This generalizes results known for negative Ricci curvature to all manifolds. More generally we establish a similar universal bound on the index of the deck group pi_1(M) in the isometry group Isom(X, g) of the universal cover X in the absence of suitable actions by connected groups. We apply this to characterize locally…
We discuss the behaviour of the bottom of the spectrum of scalar Schrödinger operators under Riemannian coverings of orbifolds. We apply our results to geometrically finite and to conformally compact orbifolds.
Let (M^n_i,g_i,p_i) be a sequence of smooth pointed complete n-dimensional Riemannian Manifolds with uniform bounds on the sectional curvatures and let (X,d,p) be a metric space such that (M^n_i,g_i,p_i) -> (X,d,p) in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense. Let O \subseteq X be the set of points x \in X such that there exists a neighborhood of x which is isometric to an open set in a Riemannian orbifold and let B = O^c be the complement set. Then we have the sharp estimates dim_Haus(B) \leq min{n-5, dim_Haus(X)-3}, and further for arbitrary x \in X we have that x \in O iff a neighborhood of x has bounded …
We present an analytic construction of complete non-compact 8-dimensional Ricci-flat manifolds with holonomy Spin(7). The construction relies on the study of the adiabatic limit of metrics with holonomy Spin(7) on principal Seifert circle bundles over asymptotically conical G2 orbifolds. The metrics we produce have an asymptotic geometry, so-called ALC geometry, that generalises to higher dimensions the geometry of 4-dimensional ALF hyperkähler metrics. We apply our construction to asymptotically conical G2 metrics arising from self-dual Einstein 4-orbifolds with positive scalar curvature. As …
We show that on Kahler manifolds with negative first Chern class, the sequence of algebraic metrics introduced by H. Tsuji converges uniformly to the Kahler-Einstein metric. For algebraic surfaces of general type and orbifolds with isolated singularities, we prove a convergence result for a modified version of Tsuji's iterative construction.
We discuss positive closed currents and Fubini-Study currents on orbifolds, as well as Bergman kernels of singular Hermitian orbifold line bundles. We prove that the Fubini-Study currents associated to high powers of a semipositive singular line bundle converge weakly to the curvature current on the set where the curvature is strictly positive, generalizing a well-known theorem of Tian. We include applications to the asymptotic distribution of zeros of random holomorphic sections.
The aim of this thesis is to construct new examples of compact orbifolds $\mathcal{O}^4(Θ)$ which admit a self dual Einstein (SDE) metric of positive scalar curvature $s>0$, with a one-dimensional group of isometries. In particular we want to prove that these examples are different from those described by Boyer, Galicki and Piccinni in \emph{$3-$Sasakian geometry, nilpotents orbits, and exeptional quotients}. We construct explicitly our new examples as quaternion-K$\ddot{\mathrm{a}}$hler reductions of the quaternion K$\ddot{\mathrm{a}}$hler Grassmannian $Gr_4(\mathbb{R}^8)$ by an isometric act…
We relate the (non)existence of lower scalar curvature bounds to the existence of certain distance-decreasing maps. We also give a sufficient condition for the existence of a limiting scalar curvature measure in the backward limit of a Ricci flow solution.
We prove an analogue of the result of Hsiang and Kleiner for 4-dimensional compact orbifolds with positive curvature and an isometric circle action. Additionally, we prove that when the underlying space is simply connected, then the orbifold fundamental group provides a bound on the failure of integer-valued Poincare Duality of the underlying space, and if the orbifold is simply connected, then ineteger-valued Poincre Duality holds for the underlying space.
This is a survey on cohomogeneity one manifolds with positive curvature. We discuss the known examples of this type and their geometry and the functions that describe the metric. We also describe the classification of cohomogeneity one manifolds that can admit a metric with positive curvature due to Grove-Wilking-Ziller. Two series of candidates arose in this classification for which it is not yet know if they admit positive curvature. The connection of these candidates to the Hitchin self dual Einstein orbifolds is discussed as well, including the curvature properties of the Hitchin metrics.
We show any Riemannian curvature model can be geometrically realized by a manifold with constant scalar curvature. We also show that any pseudo-Hermitian curvature model, para-Hermitian curvature model, hyper-pseudo-Hermitian curvature model, or hyper-para-Hermitian curvature model can be realized by a manifold with constant scalar and *-scalar curvature.
In this paper, we show that steady or shrinking complete gradient Yamabe solitons with finite total scalar curvature and non-positive Ricci curvature are Ricci flat. Moreover, under certain pinching condition for Ricci curvature, we show that steady or shrinking complete gradient Yamabe solitons with finite total scalar curvature and non-positive scalar curvature have zero scalar curvature.
In this short paper, we establish a closer relation between the Berwald scalar curvature and the $S$-curvature. In fact, we prove that a Finsler metric has isotropic Berwald scalar curvature if and only if it has weakly isotropic $S$-curvature. For Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature and of weakly isotropic $S$-curvature, they have almost isotropic $S$-curvature if and only if the flag curvature is weakly isotropic.
We study the properties of the $n$-volumic scalar curvature in this note. Lott-Sturm-Villani's curvature-dimension condition ${\rm CD}(κ,n)$ was showed to imply Gromov's $n$-volumic scalar curvature $\geq nκ$ under an additional $n$-dimensional condition and we show the stability of $n$-volumic scalar curvature $\geq κ$ with respect to smGH-convergence. Then we propose a new weighted scalar curvature on the weighted Riemannian manifold and show its properties.
The aim of the present paper is to provide an \emph{intrinsic} investigation of special Finsler spaces of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature and of $H_{p}\,$-constant curvature. Characterizations of such spaces are shown. Sufficient condition for Finsler space of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature to be of perpendicular scalar curvature is investigated. Necessary and sufficient condition under which a Finsler space of scalar curvature turns into a Finsler space of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature is given. Further, certain conditions under which a Finsler manifolds of $H_{p}$-scalar curvature and of scalar curvature redu…
We formulate several conjectures on mean convex domains in the Euclidean spaces, as well as in more general spaces with lower bonds on their scalar curvatures, and prove a few theorems motivating these conjectures.
In this note, we prove that for a complete noncompact three dimensional Riemannian manifold with bounded sectional curvature, if it has uniformly positive scalar curvature, then there is a uniform lower bound on the injectivity radius.
In this paper, we study the Randers metrics of weakly isotropic scalar curvature. We prove that a Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature must be of isotropic $S$-curvature. Further, we prove that a conformally flat Randers metric of weakly isotropic scalar curvature is either Minkowskian or Riemannian.
We consider modified scalar curvature functions for Riemannian manifolds equipped with smooth measures. Given a Riemannian submersion whose fiber transport is measure-preserving up to constants, we show that the modified scalar curvature of the base is bounded below in terms of the scalar curvatures of the total space and fibers. We give an application concerning the scalar curvature of a smooth limit space arising in a bounded curvature collapse.
Extending Aubin's construction of metrics with constant negative scalar curvature, we prove that every $n$-dimensional closed manifold admits a Riemannian metric with constant negative scalar-Weyl curvature, that is $R+t|W|, t\in\mathbb{R}$. In particular, there are no topological obstructions for metrics with $\varepsilon$-pinched Weyl curvature and negative scalar curvature.
We approximate boundaries of convex polytopes by smooth hypersurfaces $Y=Y_\varepsilon$ with {\it positive mean curvatures} and, by using basic geometric relations between the scalar curvatures of Riemannin manifolds and the mean curvatures of their boundaries, establish {\it lower bound on the dihedral angles} of these polytopes.
The infimum of the Weyl functional is shown to be surprisingly small on many compact 4-manifolds that admit positive-scalar-curvature metrics. Results are also proved that systematically compare the scalar and self-dual Weyl curvatures of certain almost-Kaehler 4-manifolds.
In this short paper, we prove that a Finsler manifold with vanishing Berwald scalar curvature has zero $\mathbf{E}$-curvature. As a consequence, Landsberg manifolds with vanishing Berwald scalar curvature are Berwald manifolds. This improves a previous result in \cite{Li}. For $(α,β)$-metrics on manifold of dimension greater than 2, if the mean Landsberg curvature and the Berwald scalar curvature both vanish, the Berwald curvature also vanishes.
