We apply a molecular dynamics scheme to analyze classically chaotic properties of a two-dimensional circular billiard system containing two Coulomb-interacting electrons. As such, the system resembles a prototype model for a semiconductor quantum dot. The interaction strength is varied from the noninteracting limit with zero potential energy up to the strongly interacting regime where the relative kinetic energy approaches zero. At weak interactions the bouncing maps show jumps between quasi-regular orbits. In the strong-interaction limit we find an analytic expression for the bouncing map. Its validity in the general case is assessed by comparison with our numerical data. To obtain a more quantitative view on the dynamics as the interaction strength is varied, we compute and analyze the escape rates of the system. Apart from very weak or strong interactions, the escape rates show consistently exponential behavior, thus suggesting strongly chaotic dynamics and a phase space without significant sticky regions within the considered time scales.
A billiard in the form of a stadium with periodically perturbed boundary is considered. Two types of such billiards are studied: stadium with strong chaotic properties and a near-rectangle billiard. Phase portraits of such billiards are investigated. In the phase plane areas corresponding to decrease and increase of the velocity of billiard particles are found. Average velocities of the particle ensemble as functions of the number of collisions are obtained.
For classical billiards we suggest that a matrix of action or length of trajectories in conjunction with statistical measures, level spacing distribution and spectral rigidity, can be used to distinguish chaotic from integrable systems. As examples of 2D chaotic billiards we considered the Bunimovich stadium billiard and the Sinai billiard. In the level spacing distribution and spectral rigidity we found GOE behaviour consistent with predictions from random matrix theory. We studied transport properties and computed a diffusion coefficient. For the Sinai billiard, we found normal diffusion, wh…
Using fractal analysis, we investigate how the size of openings affects the chaotic behavior of a classical closed billiard when two openings are made on the boundary of the billiard. This kind of open billiards retains chaotic properties of original closed billiards when openings are small compared to the size of the billiard. We calculate the fractal dimension using an one-dimensional subset of all possible initial conditions that will produce trajectories of a particle injected from an opening for the billiard, and then observe how the opening size can change the classical chaotic propertie…
We consider a modification of isospectral cavities whereby the classical dynamics changes from pseudointegrable to chaotic. We construct an example where we can prove that isospectrality is retained. We then demonstrate this explicitly in microwave resonators.
Nonlinear coupling between eigenmodes of a system leads to spectral energy redistribution. For multi-wavespeed chaotic billiards the average coupling strength can exhibit sharp discontinuities as a function of frequency related to wavevector coincidences between constituent waves of different wavespeeds. The phenomenon is investigated numerically for an ensemble of 2D square two-wavespeed billiards with rough boundaries and quadratic nonlinearity representative of elastodynamic waves. Results of direct numerical simulations are compared with theoretical predictions.
We construct an autonomous chaotic Hamiltonian ratchet as a channel billiard subdivided by equidistant walls attached perpendicularly to one side of the channel, leaving an opening on the opposite side. A static homogeneous magnetic field penetrating the billiard breaks time-reversal invariance and renders the classical motion partially chaotic. We show that the classical dynamics exhibits directed transport, owing to the asymmetric distribution of regular regions in phase space. The billiard is quantized by a numerical method based on a finite-element algorithm combined with the Landau gauge …
We present a study of the chaotic behavior of the bouncing ball billiard. The work is realised on the purpose of finding at least certain causes of separation of the neighbouring trajectories. Having in view the geometrical construction of the system, we report a clear origin of chaoticity of the bouncing ball billiard. By this we claim that in case when the floor is made of arc of circles - in a certain interval of frequencies - a lower bound for the maximal Ljapunov can be evaluated by sem-ianalitical techniques.
Dynamical properties of the elliptical stadium billiard, which is a generalization of the stadium billiard and a special case of the recently introduced mushroom billiards, are investigated analytically and numerically. In dependence on two shape parameters delta and gamma, this system reveals a rich interplay of integrable, mixed and fully chaotic behavior. Poincare sections, the box counting method and the stability analysis determine the structure of the parameter space and the borders between regions with different behavior. Results confirm the existence of a large fully chaotic region sur…
The probability current statistics of two-dimensional open chaotic ballistic billiards is studied both analytically and numerically. Assuming that the real and imaginary parts of the scattering wave function are both random Gaussian fields, we find a universal distribution function for the probability current. In by-passing we recover previous analytic forms for wave function statistics. The expressions bridge the entire region from GOE to GUE type statistics. Our analytic expressions are verified numerically by explicit quantum-mechanical calculations of transport through a Bunimovich billiar…
Chaotic properties of symmetrical two-dimensional stadium-like billiards with elliptical arcs are studied numerically and analytically. For the two-parameter truncated elliptical billiard the existence and linear stability of several lowest-order periodic orbits are investigated in the full parameter space. Poincar\' e plots are computed and used for evaluation of the degree of chaoticity with the box-counting method. The limit of the fully chaotic behavior is identified with circular arcs. Above this limit, for flattened elliptical arcs, mixed dynamics with numerous stable elliptic islands is…
Dynamical billiards are paradigmatic examples of chaotic Hamiltonian dynamical systems with widespread applications in physics. We study how well their Lyapunov exponent, characterizing the chaotic dynamics, and its dependence on external parameters can be estimated from phase space volume arguments, with emphasis on billiards with mixed regular and chaotic phase spaces. We show that in the very diverse billiards considered here the leading contribution to the Lyapunov exponent is inversely proportional to the chaotic phase space volume, and subsequently discuss the generality of this relation…
We study theoretically and numerically the velocity dynamics of fully chaotic time-dependent shape-preserving billiards. The average velocity of an ensemble of initial conditions generally asymptotically follows the power law $v = n^β$ with respect to the number of collisions n. If the shape of the chaotic time-dependent billiard is not preserved it is well known that the acceleration exponent is $β= 1/2$. We show, on the other hand, that if the shape of the billiard is preserved then the only possible values of $β$ are $1/4$, $1/6$ and in a special case $0$. We show that the value of $β$ is d…
We consider the motion of a particle subjected to the constant gravitational field and scattered inelasticaly by hard boundaries which possess the shape of parabola, wedge, and hyperbola. The billiard itself performs oscillations. The linear dependence of the restitution coefficient on the particle velocity is assumed. We demonstrate that this dynamical system can be either regular or chaotic, which depends on the billiard shape and the oscillation frequency. The trajectory calculations are compared with the experimental data; a good agreement has been achieved. Moreover, the properties of the…
The dynamics of chaotic billiards is significantly influenced by coexisting regions of regular motion. Here we investigate the prevalence of a different fundamental structure, which is formed by marginally unstable periodic orbits and stands apart from the regular regions. We show that these structures both {\it exist} and {\it strongly influence} the dynamics of locally perturbed billiards, which include a large class of widely studied systems. We demonstrate the impact of these structures in the quantum regime using microwave experiments in annular billiards.
We present numerical and experimental results for the development of islands of stability in atom-optics billiards with soft walls. As the walls are soften, stable regions appear near singular periodic trajectories in converging (focusing) and dispersing billiards, and are surrounded by areas of "stickiness" in phase-space. The size of these islands depends on the softness of the potential in a very sensitive way.
We investigate the effect of white-noise perturbations on chaotic trajectories in open billiards. We focus on the temporal decay of the survival probability for generic mixed-phase-space billiards. The survival probability has a total of five different decay regimes that prevail for different intermediate times. We combine new calculations and recent results on noise perturbed Hamiltonian systems to characterize the origin of these regimes, and to compute how the parameters scale with noise intensity and billiard openness. Numerical simulations in the annular billiard support and illustrate ou…
We study the quantum behaviour of the stadium billiard. We discuss how the interplay between quantum localization and the rich structure of the classical phase space influences the quantum dynamics. The analysis of this model leads to new insight in the understanding of quantum properties of classically chaotic systems.
We present the expanded boundary integral method for solving the planar Helmholtz problem, which combines the ideas of the boundary integral method and the scaling method and is applicable to arbitrary shapes. We apply the method to a chaotic billiard with unidirectional transport, where we demonstrate existence of doublets of chaotic eigenstates, which are quasi-degenerate due to time-reversal symmetry, and a very particular level spacing distribution that attains a chaotic Shnirelman peak at short energy ranges and exhibits GUE-like statistics for large energy ranges. We show that, as a cons…
Non-generic contributions to the quantal level-density from parallel segments in billiards are investigated. These contributions are due to the existence of marginally stable families of periodic orbits, which are structurally unstable, in the sense that small perturbations, such as a slight tilt of one of the segments, destroy them completely. We investigate the effects of such perturbation on the corresponding quantum spectra, and demonstrate them for the stadium billiard.
We study analytically and numerically the classical diffusive process which takes place in a chaotic billiard. This allows to estimate the conditions under which the statistical properties of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions can be described by Random Matrix Theory. In particular the phenomenon of quantum dynamical localization should be observable in real experiments.
We study the statistical properties of wavefunctions in a chaotic billiard that is opened up to the outside world. Upon increasing the openings, the billiard wavefunctions cross over from real to complex. Each wavefunction is characterized by a phase rigidity, which is itself a fluctuating quantity. We calculate the probability distribution of the phase rigidity and discuss how phase rigidity fluctuations cause long-range correlations of intensity and current density. We also find that phase rigidities for wavefunctions with different incoming wave boundary conditions are statistically correla…
We present the first experimental study of the electric field distributions E_N of a three-dimensional (3D) microwave chaotic rough billiard with the translational symmetry. The translational symmetry means that the cross-section of the billiard is invariant under translation along z direction. The 3D electric field distributions were measured up to the level number N = 489. In this way the experimental spatial correlation functions C_{N,p}(x,s) ~ < E_{N,p}(x+1/2*s) E_{N,p}^(*)(x - 1/2*s)> were found and compared with the theoretical ones. The experimental results for higher two-dimensional le…
We study the quantum behaviour of chaotic billiards which exhibit classically diffusive behaviour. In particular we consider the stadium billiard and discuss how the interplay between quantum localization and the rich structure of the classical phase space influences the quantum dynamics. The analysis of this model leads to new insight in the understanding of quantum properties of classically chaotic systems.
We investigate the local electronic structure of a Sinai-like, quadrilateral graphene quantum billiard with zigzag and armchair edges using scanning tunneling microscopy at room temperature. It is revealed that besides the $(\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3})R30$° superstructure, which is caused by the intervalley scattering, its overtones also appear in the STM measurements, which are attributed to the Umklapp processes. We point out that these results can be well understood by taking into account the Coulomb interaction in the quantum billiard, accounting for both the measured density of state values a…
This is the first survey of highly excited eigenstates of a chaotic 3D billiard. We introduce a strongly chaotic 3D billiard with a smooth boundary and we manage to calculate accurate eigenstates with sequential number (of a 48-fold desymmetrized billiard) about 45,000. Besides the brute-force calculation of 3D wavefunctions we propose and illustrate another two representations of eigenstates of quantum 3D billiards: (i) normal derivative of a wavefunction over the boundary surface, and (ii) ray - angular momentum representation. The majority of eigenstates is found to be more or less uniforml…
Chaotic orbits of mushroom billiards display intermittent behaviors. We investigate statistical properties of this system by constructing an infinite partition on the chaotic part of a Poincaré surface which illustrates details of chaotic dynamics. Each piece of the infinite partition has an unique escape time from the half disk region, and from this result it is shown that, for fixed values of the system parameters, the escape time distribution obeys power law $1/t_{\rm esc}^3$.
We investigate the effective field theory of a quantum chaotic billiard from a new perspective of quantum anomalies, which result from the absence of continuous spectral symmetry in quantized systems. It is shown that commutators of composite operators on the energy shell acquire anomalous part. The presence of the anomaly allows one to introduce effective dual fields as phase variables without any additional coarse-graining nor ensemble averaging in a ballistic system. The spectral Husimi function plays a role as the corresponding amplitude.
We study the classical and quantum mechanics of a three-dimensional stadium billiard. It consists of two quarter cylinders that are rotated with respect to each other by 90 degrees, and it is classically chaotic. The billiard exhibits only a few families of nongeneric periodic orbits. We introduce an analytic method for their treatment. The length spectrum can be understood in terms of the nongeneric and unstable periodic orbits. For unequal radii of the quarter cylinders the level statistics agree well with predictions from random matrix theory. For equal radii the billiard exhibits an additi…
We investigate chaotic scattering on an attractive step potential with a quadrupolar deformation. The phase space features of the bound billiard are studied by using the notion of symmetry lines to find periodic orbits. We show that the scattering dynamics is intimately linked to structures in the bound billiard (infinite potential wall) phase space. The existence of preferred scattering directions is shown to be a consequence of large scale features of the phase space such as the period-two orbits. Self-similarity in the scattering functions is directly linked to unstable periodic orbits of t…
Classical chaotic systems with symbolic dynamics but strong pruning present a particular challenge for the application of semiclassical quantization methods. In the present study we show that the technique of periodic orbit quantization by harmonic inversion of trace formulae, which does not rely on the existence of a complete symbolic dynamics or other specific properties, lends itself ideally to calculating semiclassical eigenvalues from periodic orbit data even in strongly pruned systems. As the number of periodic orbits proliferates exponentially in chaotic systems, we apply the harmonic i…
Classical-quantum correspondence for conservative chaotic Hamiltonians is investigated in terms of the structure of the eigenfunctions and the local density of states, using as a model a 2D rippled billiard in the regime of global chaos. The influence of the observed localized and sparsed states in the quantum-classical correspondence is discussed.
Close to a spacelike singularity, pure gravity and supergravity in four to eleven spacetime dimensions admit a cosmological billiard description based on hyperbolic Kac-Moody groups. We investigate the quantum cosmological billiards of relativistic wavepackets towards the singularity, employing flat and hyperbolic space descriptions for the quantum billiards. We find that the strongly chaotic classical billiard motion of four-dimensional pure gravity corresponds to a spreading wavepacket subject to successive redshifts and tending to zero as the singularity is approached. We discuss the possib…
The spectral properties of a two-dimensional microwave billiard showing threefold symmetry have been studied with a new experimental technique. This method is based on the behavior of the eigenmodes under variation of a phase shift between two input channels, which strongly depends on the symmetries of the eigenfunctions. Thereby a complete set of 108 Kramers doublets has been identified by a simple and purely experimental method. This set clearly shows Gaussian unitary ensemble statistics, although the system is time-reversal invariant.
We study the dynamics of billiard models with a modified collision rule: the outgoing angle from a collision is a uniform contraction, by a factor lambda, of the incident angle. These pinball billiards interpolate between a one-dimensional map when lambda=0 and the classical Hamiltonian case of elastic collisions when lambda=1. For all lambda<1, the dynamics is dissipative, and thus gives rise to attractors, which may be periodic or chaotic. Motivated by recent rigorous results of Markarian, Pujals and Sambarino, we numerically investigate and characterise the bifurcations of the resulting att…
The Loschmidt echo (LE) (or fidelity) quantifies the sensitivity of the time evolution of a quantum system with respect to a perturbation of the Hamiltonian. In a typical chaotic system the LE has been previously argued to exhibit a long-time saturation at a value inversely proportional to the effective size of the Hilbert space of the system. However, until now no quantitative results have been known and, in particular, no explicit expression for the proportionality constant has been proposed. In this paper we perform a quantitative analysis of the phenomenon of the LE saturation and provide …
This paper is devoted to the quantum chaology of three-dimensional systems. A trace formula is derived for compact polyhedral billiards which tessellate the three-dimensional hyperbolic space of constant negative curvature. The exact trace formula is compared with Gutzwiller's semiclassical periodic-orbit theory in three dimensions, and applied to a tetrahedral billiard being strongly chaotic. Geometric properties as well as the conjugacy classes of the defining group are discussed. The length spectrum and the quantal level spectrum are numerically computed allowing the evaluation of the trace…
We study a two-particle circular billiard containing two finite-size circular particles that collide elastically with the billiard boundary and with each other. Such a two-particle circular billiard provides a clean example of an "intermittent" system. This billiard system behaves chaotically, but the time scale on which chaos manifests can become arbitrarily long as the sizes of the confined particles become smaller. The finite-time dynamics of this system depends on the relative frequencies of (chaotic) particle-particle collisions versus (integrable) particle-boundary collisions, and invest…
Generic one-parameter billiards are studied both classically and quantally. The classical dynamics for the billiards makes a transition from regular to fully chaotic motion through intermediary soft chaotic system. The energy spectra of the billiards are computed using finite element method which has not been applied to the euclidean billiard. True generic quantum chaotic transitional behavior and its sensitive dependence on classical dynamics are uncovered for the first time. That is, this sensitive dependence of quantum spectral measures on classical dynamics is a genuine manifestation of qu…
We show that using the concept of the two-dimensional level number N_{|} one can experimentally study of the nodal domains in a three-dimensional (3D) microwave chaotic rough billiard with the translational symmetry. Nodal domains are regions where a wave function has a definite sign. We found the dependence of the number of nodal domains aleph_{N_{|}} lying on the cross-sectional planes of the cavity on the two-dimensional level number N_{|}. We demonstrate that in the limit N_{|} -> infinity the least squares fit of the experimental data reveals the asymptotic ratio aleph_{N_{|}}/N_{|} = 0.0…
We study the coupling of bouncing-ball modes to chaotic modes in two-dimensional billiards with two parallel boundary segments. Analytically, we predict the corresponding decay rates using the fictitious integrable system approach. Agreement with numerically determined rates is found for the stadium and the cosine billiard. We use this result to predict the asymptotic behavior of the counting function N_bb(E) ~ E^δ. For the stadium billiard we find agreement with the previous result δ= 3/4. For the cosine billiard we derive δ= 5/8, which is confirmed numerically and is well below the previousl…
It has recently been shown that the computing abilities of Boltzmann machines, or Ising spin-glass models, can be implemented by chaotic billiard dynamics without any use of random numbers. In this paper, we further numerically investigate the capabilities of the chaotic billiard dynamics as a deterministic alternative to random Monte Carlo methods by applying it to classical spin models in statistical physics. First, we verify that the billiard dynamics can yield samples that converge to the true distribution of the Ising model on a small lattice, and we show that it appears to have the same …
Numerical calculation and analysis of extremely high-lying energy spectra, containing thousands of levels with sequential quantum number up to 62,000 per symmetry class, of a generic chaotic 3D quantum billiard is reported. The shape of the billiard is given by a simple and smooth de formation of a unit sphere which gives rise to (almost) fully chaotic classical dynamics. We present an analysis of (i) quantum length spectrum whose smooth part agrees with the 3D Weyl formula and whose oscillatory part is peaked around the periods of classical periodic orbits, (ii) nearest neighbor level spacing…
For the first time a three--dimensional (3D) chaotic billiard -- the 3D Sinai billiard -- was quantized, and high--precision spectra with thousands of eigenvalues were calculated. We present here a semiclassical and statistical analysis of the spectra, and point out some of the features which are genuine consequences of the three dimensionality of this chaotic billiard.
The boundary of the lemon billiards is defined by the intersection of two circles of equal unit radius with the distance $2B$ between their centers, as introduced by Heller and Tomsovic in Phys. Today {\bf 46} 38 (1993). This paper is a continuation of our recent paper on classical and quantum ergodic lemon billiard ($B=0.5$) with strong stickiness effects published in Phys. Rev. E {\bf 103} 012204 (2021). Here we study the classical and quantum lemon billiards, for the cases $B=0.42,\;0.55,\; 0.6$, which are mixed-type billiards without stickiness regions and thus serve as ideal examples of s…
The persistent current of ballistic chaotic billiards is considered with the help of the Gutzwiller trace formula. We derive the semiclassical formula of a typical persistent current $I^{typ}$ for a single billiard and an average persistent current $<I>$ for an ensemble of billiards at finite temperature. These formulas are used to show that the persistent current for chaotic billiards is much smaller than that for integrable ones. The persistent currents in the ballistic regime therefore become an experimental tool to search for the quantum signature of classical chaotic and regular dynamics.
We consider chaotic billiards in d dimensions, and study the matrix elements M_{nm} corresponding to general deformations of the boundary. We analyze the dependence of |M_{nm}|^2 on ω= (E_n-E_m)/\hbar using semiclassical considerations. This relates to an estimate of the energy dissipation rate when the deformation is periodic at frequency ω. We show that for dilations and translations of the boundary, |M_{nm}|^2 vanishes like ω^4 as ω-> 0, for rotations like ω^2, whereas for generic deformations it goes to a constant. Such special cases lead to quasi-orthogonality of the eigenstates on the bo…
We consider classical dynamical properties of a particle in a constant gravitational force and making specular reflections with circular, elliptic or oval boundaries. The model and collision map are described and a detailed study of the energy regimes is made. The linear stability of fixed points is studied, yielding exact analytical expressions for parameter values at which a period-doubling bifurcation occurs. The dynamics is apparently ergodic at certain energies in all three models, in contrast to the regularity of the circular and elliptic billiard dynamics in the field-free case. This fi…
The quantum dynamics of a chaotic billiard with moving boundary is considered in this work. We found a shape parameter Hamiltonian expansion which enables us to obtain the spectrum of the deformed billiard for deformations so large as the characteristic wave length. Then, for a specified time dependent shape variation, the quantum dynamics of a particle inside the billiard is integrated directly. In particular, the dispersion of the energy is studied in the Bunimovich stadium billiard with oscillating boundary. The results showed that the distribution of energy spreads diffusively for the firs…
Friedel oscillations of electron densities near step edges have an analog in microwave billiards. A random plane wave model, normally only appropriate for the eigenfunctions of a purely chaotic system, can be applied and is tested for non-purely-chaotic dynamical systems with measurements on pseudo-integrable and mixed dynamics geometries. It is found that the oscillations in the pseudo-integrable microwave cavity matches the random plane-wave modeling. Separating the chaotic from the regular states for the mixed system requires incorporating an appropriate phase space projection into the mode…
We perform echo spectroscopy on ultra cold atoms in atom optics billiards, to study their quantum dynamics. The detuning of the trapping laser is used to change the ``perturbation'', which causes a decay in the echo coherence. Two different regimes are observed: First, a perturbative regime in which the decay of echo coherence is non-monotonic and partial revivals of coherence are observed. These revivals are more pronounced in traps with mixed dynamics as compared to traps where the dynamics is fully chaotic. Next, for stronger perturbations, the decay becomes monotonic and independent of the…
The dynamics in three-dimensional billiards leads, using a Poincaré section, to a four-dimensional map which is challenging to visualize. By means of the recently introduced 3D phase-space slices an intuitive representation of the organization of the mixed phase space with regular and chaotic dynamics is obtained. Of particular interest for applications are constraints to classical transport between different regions of phase space which manifest in the statistics of Poincaré recurrence times. For a 3D paraboloid billiard we observe a slow power-law decay caused by long-trapped trajectories wh…
Quantum cavities or dots have markedly different properties depending on whether their classical counterparts are chaotic or not. Connecting a superconductor to such a cavity leads to notable proximity effects, particularly the appearance, predicted by random matrix theory, of a hard gap in the excitation spectrum of quantum chaotic systems. Andreev billiards are interesting examples of such structures built with superconductors connected to a ballistic normal metal billiard since each time an electron hits the superconducting part it is retroreflected as a hole (and vice-versa). Using a semic…
We study experimentally nodal domains of wave functions (electric field distributions) lying in the regime of Shnirelman ergodicity in the chaotic microwave half-circular ray-splitting rough billiard. For this aim the wave functions Psi_N of the billiard were measured up to the level number N=415. We show that in the regime of Shnirelman ergodicity (N>208) wave functions of the chaotic half-circular microwave ray-splitting rough billiard are extended over the whole energy surface and the amplitude distributions are Gaussian. For such ergodic wave functions the dependence of the number of nodal…
In generic Hamiltonian systems with a mixed phase space chaotic transport may be directed and ballistic rather than diffusive. We investigate one particular model showing this behaviour, namely a spatially periodic billiard chain in which electrons move under the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field. We analyze the phase-space structure and derive an explicit expression for the chaotic transport velocity. Unlike previous studies of directed chaos our model has a parameter regime in which the dispersion of an ensemble of chaotic trajectories around its moving center of mass is essentiall…
We investigate a two-level model with a large number of open decay channels in order to describe avoided level crossing statistics in open chaotic billiards. This model allows us to describe the fundamental changes of the probability distribution of the avoided level crossings compared with the closed case. Explicit expressions are derived for systems with preserved and broken Time Reversal Symmetry (TRS). We find that the decay process induces a modification at small spacings of the probability distribution of the avoided level crossings due to an attraction of the resonances. The theoretical…
We investigate dynamical properties of chaotic trajectories in mushroom billiards. These billiards present a well-defined simple border between a single regular region and a single chaotic component. We find that the stickiness of chaotic trajectories near the border of the regular region occurs through an infinite number of marginally unstable periodic orbits. These orbits have zero measure, thus not affecting the ergodicity of the chaotic region. Notwithstanding, they govern the main dynamical properties of the system. In particular, we show that the marginally unstable periodic orbits expla…
We present here a new method which applies well ordered symbolic dynamics to find unstable periodic and non-periodic orbits in a chaotic system. The method is simple and efficient and has been successfully applied to a number of different systems such as the Hénon map, disk billiards, stadium billiard, wedge billiard, diamagnetic Kepler problem, colinear Helium atom and systems with attracting potentials. The method seems to be better than earlier applied methods.
We study the motion of classical particles confined in a two-dimensional "nuclear" billiard whose walls undergo periodic shape oscillations according to a fixed multipolarity. The presence of a coupling term in the single particle Hamiltonian between the particle motion and the collective coordinate generates a fully selfconsistent dynamics. We consider in particular monopole oscillations and demonstrate that self-consistency is essential in order to induce chaotic single-particle motion. We also discuss the dissipative behaviour of the wall motion and its relation with the order-to-chaos tran…
We study the aspects of quantum localization in the stadium billiard, which is a classically chaotic ergodic system, but in the regime of slightly distorted circle billiard the diffusion in the momentum space is very slow. In quantum systems with discrete energy spectrum the Heisenberg time $t_H =2π\hbar/ΔE$, where $ΔE$ is the mean level spacing (inverse energy level density), is an important time scale. The classical transport time scale $t_T$ (diffusion time) in relation to the Heisenberg time scale $t_H$ (their ratio is the parameter $α=t_H/t_T$) determines the degree of localization of the…
