After 100 years of effort, the classification of all the finite subgroups of SU(3) is yet incomplete. The most recently updated list can be found in P.O. Ludl, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 44 255204 (2011), where the structure of the series (C) and (D) of SU(3)-subgroups is studied. We provide a minimal set of generators for one of these groups which has order 162. These generators appear up to phase as the image of an irreducible unitary braid group representation issued from the Jones-Kauffman version of SU(2) Chern-Simons theory at level 4. In light of these new generators, we study the structure of the group in detail and recover the fact that it is isomorphic to the semidirect product Z_9 \times Z_3 \rtimes S_3 with respect to conjugation.
We show that non-abelian two-generator subgroups of right-angled Artin groups are quasi-isometrically embedded free groups. This provides an alternate proof of a theorem of A. Baudisch: that all two-generator subgroups are free or free abelian. Additionally, it shows that they are quasi-isometrically embedded. Our theorem also gives a method for detecting groups that are not isomorphic to a subgroup of any RAAG. We present some counterexamples in subgroups with more than two generators.
In this paper we describe the profinite completion of the free solvable group on m generators of solvability length r>1. Then, we show that for m=r=2, the free metabelian group on two generators does not have the Congruence Subgroup Property.
We consider what some authors call 'parabolic Möbius subgroups' of matrices over Z, Q, and R and focus on the membership problem in these subgroups and complexity of relevant algorithms.
We classify all subgroups of $SO(3)$ that are generated by two elements, each a rotation of finite order, about axes separated by an angle that is a rational multiple of $π$. In all cases we give a presentation of the subgroup. In most cases the subgroup is the free product, or the amalgamated free product, of cyclic groups or dihedral groups. The relations between the generators are all simple consequences of standard facts about rotations by $π$ and $π/2$. Embedded in the subgroups are explicit free groups on 2 generators, as used in the Banach-Tarski paradox.
According to the Tits conjecture proved by Crisp and Paris, [CP], the subgroups of the braid group generated by proper powers of the Artin elements are presented by the commutators of generators which are powers of commuting elements. Hence they are naturally presented as right-angled Artin groups. The case of subgroups generated by powers of the band generators is more involved. We show that the groups are right-angled Artin groups again, if all generators are proper powers with exponent at least 3. We also give a presentation in cases at the other extreme, when all generators occur with expo…
We show that any two elements of the pure braid group either commute or generate a free group, settling a question of Luis Paris. Our proof involves the theory of 3-manifolds and the theory of group actions on trees.
It is well known that, in general, the set of commutators of a group $G$ may not be a subgroup. Guralnick showed that if $G$ is a finite $p$-group with $p\ge 5$ such that $G'$ is abelian and $3$-generator, then all the elements of the derived subgroup are commutators. In this paper, we extend Guralnick's result by showing that the condition of $G'$ to be abelian is not needed. In this way, we complete the study of this property in finite $p$-groups in terms of the number of generators of the derived subgroup. We will also see that the same result is true when the action of $G$ on $G'$ is unise…
Let $G$ be a finite $p$-group whose derived subgroup $G'$ can be generated by $2$ elements. If $G'$ is abelian, Guralnick proved that every element of $G'$ is a commutator. In this paper, we prove that the condition that $G'$ should be abelian is not needed. Even more, we prove that every element of $G'$ is a commutator of the form $[x,g]$ for a fixed $x\in G$.
Let G be a finite non-nilpotent group such that every Sylow subgroup of G is generated by at most d elements, and such that p is the largest prime dividing |G|. We show that G has a non-nilpotent image G/N, such that N is characteristic and of index bounded by a function of d and p. This result will be used to prove that the index of the Frattini subgroup of G is bounded in terms of d and p. Upper bounds will be given explicitly for soluble groups.

The Surface Group Conjectures are statements about recognising surface groups among one-relator groups, using either the structure of their finite-index subgroups, or all subgroups. We resolve these conjectures in the two generator case. More generally, we prove that every two-generator one-relator group with every infinite-index subgroup free is itself either free or a surface group.
The nonsoluble length $λ(G)$ of a finite group $G$ is defined as the minimum number of nonsoluble factors in a normal series of $G$ each of whose quotients either is soluble or is a direct product of nonabelian simple groups. The generalized Fitting height of a finite group $G$ is the least number $h=h^*(G)$ such that $F^*_h(G)=G$, where $F^*_1(G)=F^*(G)$ is the generalized Fitting subgroup, and $F^*_{i+1}(G)$ is the inverse image of $F^*(G/F^*_{i}(G))$. In the present paper we prove that if $λ(J)\leq k$ for every 2-generator subgroup $J$ of $G$, then $λ(G)\leq k$. It is conjectured that if $h…
We address two questions of Simon Thomas. First, we show that for any n>2 one can find a four generated free subgroup of SLn(Z) which is profinitely dense. More generally, we show that an arithmetic group Γwhich admits the congruence subgroup property, has a profinitely dense free subgroup with an explicit bound of its rank. Next, we show that the set of profinitely dense, locally free subgroups of such an arithmetic group Γis uncountable.
The group U_n(F) of all nxn unipotent upper-triangular matrices over F has derived length d := Ceiling(log_2 (n)), equivalently 2^{d-1} < n <= 2^d. We prove that U_n(F) has a 3-generated subgroup of derived length d, and it has a 2-generated subgroup of derived length d if and only if (21/32)* 2^d < n <= 2^d.
It was conjectured by Tits that the only relations amongst the squares of the standard generators of an Artin group are the obvious ones, namely that a^2 and b^2 commute if ab=ba appears as one of the Artin relations. In this paper we prove Tits' conjecture for all Artin groups. More generally, we show that, given a number m(s)>1 for each Artin generator s, the only relations amongst the powers s^m(s) of the generators are that a^m(a) and b^m(b) commute if ab=ba appears amongst the Artin relations.
In this paper, we characterize the finite groups $G$ of even order with the property that for any involution $x$ and element $y$ of $G$, $\langle x, y \rangle$ is isomorphic to one of the following groups: $\mathbb{Z}_2,$ $\mathbb{Z}_2^2$, $\mathbb{Z}_4$, $\mathbb{Z}_6$, $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_4$, $\mathbb{Z}_2 \times\mathbb{Z}_6$ and $A_4$. As a result, a characterization will be obtained for the finite groups all of whose Cayley graphs of degree $3$ have integral spectrum.
We use polyhedral product models to analyse the structure of the commutator subgroup of a right-angled Artin group. In particular, we provide a minimal set of generators for the commutator subgroup, consisting of special iterated commutators of canonical generators.
The congruence subgroup problem for a finitely generated group $Γ$ asks whether the map $\hat{Aut\left(Γ\right)}\to Aut(\hatΓ)$ is injective, or more generally, what is its kernel $C\left(Γ\right)$? Here $\hat{X}$ denotes the profinite completion of $X$. It is well known that for finitely generated free abelian groups $C\left(\mathbb{Z}^{n}\right)=\left\{ 1\right\}$ for every $n\geq3$, but $C\left(\mathbb{Z}^{2}\right)=\hat{F}_ω$, where $\hat{F}_ω$ is the free profinite group on countably many generators. Considering $Φ_{n}$, the free metabelian group on $n$ generators, it was also proven that…
We give a small generating set for the twist subgroup of the mapping class group of a non-orientable surface by Dehn twists. The difference between the number of the generators and a lower bound of numbers of generators for the twist subgroup by Dehn twists is one. The lower bounds is obtained from an argument of Hirose [5].
A subgroup $H$ of a free group $F$ is called inert in $F$ if for every $G < F$ the rank of the intersection of $H$ with $G$ is no grater than the rank of $G$. In this paper we expand the known families of inert subgroups. We show that the inertia property holds for 1-generator endomorphisms. Equivalently, echelon subgroups in free groups are inert. An echelon subgroup is defined through a set of generators that are in echelon form with respect to some ordered basis of the free group, and may be seen as a generalization of a free factor. For example, the fixed subgroups of automorphisms of fini…
In this paper, we show that every measure-preserving ergodic equivalence relation of cost less than m comes from a "rich" faithful invariant random subgroup of the free group on m generators, strengthening a result of Bowen which had been obtained by a Baire category argument. Our proof is completely explicit: we use our previous construction of topological generators for full groups and observe that these generators induce a totally non free action. We then twist this construction so that the action is moreover amenable onto almost every orbit and highly faithful.
We study finitely-generated nondiscrete free subgroups in Lie groups. We address the following question first raised by Étienne Ghys: is it always possible to make arbitrarily small perturbation of the generators of the free subgroup in such a way that the new group formed by the perturbed generators be not free? In other words, is it possible to approximate generators of a free subgroup by elements satisfying a nontrivial relation? We prove that the answer to Ghys' question is positive and generalize this result to certain non-free subgroups. We also consider the question on the best approxim…
Let $G$ be a finite group and $N\unlhd G$. In this note, we construct a class poset of $G$ for some cyclic subgroup $C$ of $G$. And we find a relation between $m_{G,N}$ and the Euler characteristic of some nerve spaces of these posets(see Main Theorem).
The background of this paper is the following: search of the minimal systems of generators for this class of group which still was not founded also problem of representation for this class of group, exploration of systems of generators for Sylow 2-subgroups $Syl_2{A_{2^k}}$ and $Syl_2{A_{n}}$ of alternating group, finding structure these subgroups. The aim of this paper is to research the structure of Sylow 2-subgroups and to construct a minimal generating system for such subgroups. In other words, the problem is not simply in the proof of existence of a generating set with elements for Sylow …
For most (and possibly all) non-associative finite simple Moufang loops, three generators of order 3 can be chosen so that each two of them generate a group isomorphic to $(3, 3 | 3, p)$. The subgroup structure of $(3, 3 | 3, p)$ depends on the solvability of a certain quadratic congruence, and it is described here in terms of generators.
Let G be a split real Kac-Moody group of arbitrary type and let K be its maximal compact subgroup, i.e. the subgroup of elements fixed by a Cartan-Chevalley involution of G. We construct non-trivial spin covers of K, thus confirming a conjecture by Damour and Hillmann (arXiv:0906.3116). For irreducible simply laced diagrams and for all spherical diagrams these spin covers are two-fold central extensions of K. For more complicated irreducible diagrams these spin covers are central extensions by a finite 2-group of possibly larger cardinality. Our construction is amalgam-theoretic and makes use …
For an odd prime p, we determine a minimal set of topological generators of the pro-p Iwahori subgroup of a split reductive group G over Z\_p. In the simple adjoint case and for any sufficiently large regular prime p, we also construct Galois extensions of Q with Galois group between the pro-p and the standard Iwahori subgroups of G.
The background of this paper is the following: search of the minimal systems of generators for this class of group which still was not founded also problem of representation for this class of group, exploration of systems of generators for Sylow 2-subgroups $Syl_2{A_{2^k}}$ and $Syl_2{A_{n}}$ of alternating group, finding structure of these subgroups. The authors of article "Structure of 2-sylow subgroup of symmetric and alternating group" U.~Dmitruk, V.~Suschansky didn't proof minimality of finding by them system of generators for such Sylow 2-subgroups of $A_n$ and structure of it were found…
Let $G$ be a discrete Coxeter group, $G^+$ its alternating subgroup and $\tilde{G}^+$ the spinor cover of $G^+$. A presentation of the groups $G^+$ and $\tilde{G}^+$ is proved for an arbitrary Coxeter system $(G,S)$; the generators are related to edges of the Coxeter graph. Results of the Coxeter--Todd algorithm - with this presentation - for the chains of alternating groups of types A, B and D are given.
We explore an elementary construction that produces finitely presented groups with diverse homological finiteness properties -- the {\em binary subgroups}, $B(Σ,μ)<G_1\times\dots\times G_m$. These full subdirect products require strikingly few generators. If each $G_i$ is finitely presented, $B(Σ,μ)$ is finitely presented. When the $G_i$ are non-abelian limit groups (e.g. free or surface groups), the $B(Σ,μ)$ provide new examples of finitely presented, residually-free groups that do not have finite classifying spaces and are not of Stallings-Bieri type. These examples settle a question of Mina…
Let G be a unipotent algebraic subgroup of some GL_m(C) defined over Q. We describe an algorithm for finding a finite set of generators of the subgroup G(Z) = G \cap GL_m(Z). This is based on a new proof of the result (in more general form due to Borel and Harish-Chandra) that such a finite generating set exists.
In this paper we continue to develop the topological method started in Santos-San Martin \cite{ariasm} to get semigroup generators of semi-simple Lie groups. Consider a subset $Γ\subset G$ that contains a semi-simple subgroup $G_{1}$ of $G$. Then $Γ$ generates $G$ if $\mathrm{Ad}\left( Γ\right) $ generates a Zariski dense subgroup of the algebraic group $\mathrm{Ad}\left( G\right) $. The proof is reduced to check that some specific closed orbits of $G_{1}$ in the flag manifolds of $G$ are not trivial in the sense of algebraic topology. Here, we consider three different cases of semi-simple Lie…
A maximal abelian normal subgroup A in a nilpotent group N is self-centralizing. This makes their role an important one in determining the structure of the nilpotent group. For example if A is finite then N is also finite. In the free nilpotent group of class 2 such a group is always a cyclic extension of the center. However this need not be true in an arbitrary finitely generated class two nilpotent group. We show that three generator nilpotent groups violating this condition can be easily found. However in the case when there are four or more generators certain conditions must hold.
Let F_n be the free group on n generators, and PΣ_n be the group of automorphisms of F_n which send each generator to a conjugate of itself. Let K_n be the kernel of the homomorphism from PΣ_n to PΣ_{n-1} induced by mapping one of the free group generators to the identity. We show that K_n has cohomological dimension n-1, and that the ith cohomology groups are infinitely generated for all i between 2 and n-1. It follows that K_n is not finitely presentable for n>2.
The problem of determining whether or not a non-elementary subgroup of $PSL(2,\CC)$ is discrete is a long standing one. The importance of two generator subgroups comes from Jørgensen's inequality which has as a corollary the fact that a non-elementary subgroup of $PSL(2,\CC)$ is discrete if and only if every non-elementary two generator subgroup is. A solution even in the two-generator $PSL(2,\RR)$ case appears to require an algorithm that relies on a the concept of {\sl trace minimizing} that was initiated by Rosenberger and Purzitsky in the 1970's Their work has lead to many discreteness res…
We prove that any non-cocompact irreducible lattice in a higher rank semi-simple Lie group contains a subgroup of finite index, which has three generators.
For each natural number $d$ we construct a $3$-generated group $H_d$, which is a subdirect product of free groups, such that the cohomological dimension of $H_d$ is $d$. Given a group $F$ and a normal subgroup $N \lhd F$ we prove that any right angled Artin group containing the special HNN-extension of $F$ with respect to $N$ must also contain $F/N$. We apply this to construct, for every $d \in \mathbb{N}$, a $4$-generated group $G_d$, embeddable into a right angled Artin group, such that the cohomological dimension of $G_d$ is $2$ but the cohomological dimension of any right angled Artin grou…
Let $G$ be a finite almost simple group. It is well known that $G$ can be generated by 3 elements, and in previous work we showed that 6 generators suffice for all maximal subgroups of $G$. In this paper we consider subgroups at the next level of the subgroup lattice - the so-called second maximal subgroups. We prove that with the possible exception of some families of rank 1 groups of Lie type, the number of generators of every second maximal subgroup of $G$ is bounded by an absolute constant. We also show that such a bound holds without any exceptions if and only if there are only finitely m…
We consider random subgroups of Thompson's group $F$ with respect to two natural stratifications of the set of all $k$ generator subgroups. We find that the isomorphism classes of subgroups which occur with positive density are not the same for the two stratifications. We give the first known examples of {\em persistent} subgroups, whose isomorphism classes occur with positive density within the set of $k$-generator subgroups, for all sufficiently large $k$. Additionally, Thompson's group provides the first example of a group without a generic isomorphism class of subgroup. Elements of $F$ are…
We consider the structure of finite $p$-groups $G$ having precisely three characteristic subgroups, namely $1$, $Φ(G)$ and $G$. The structure of $G$ varies markedly depending on whether $G$ has exponent $p$ or $p^2$, and, in both cases, the study of such groups raises deep problems in representation theory. We present classification theorems for 3- and 4-generator groups, and we also study the existence of such $r$-generator groups with exponent $p^2$ for various values of $r$. The automorphism group induced on the Frattini quotient is, in various cases, related to a maximal linear group in As…
Given a semisimple group over a local field of residual characteristic p, its topological group of rational points admits maximal pro-p-subgroups. Quasi-split simply-connected semisimple groups can be described in the combinatorial terms of valued root groups, thanks to Bruhat-Tits theory. In this context, it becomes possible to compute explicitly a minimal generating set of the (all conjugated) maximal pro-p-subgroups thanks to parametrizations of a suitable maximal torus and of corresponding root groups. We show that the minimal number of generators is then linear with respect to the rank of…
The congruence subgroup problem for a finitely generated group $Γ$ asks whether $\widehat{Aut\left(Γ\right)}\to Aut(\hatΓ)$ is injective, or more generally, what is its kernel $C\left(Γ\right)$? Here $\hat{X}$ denotes the profinite completion of $X$. In this paper we first give two new short proofs of two known results (for $Γ=F_{2}$ and $Φ_{2}$) and a new result for $Γ=Φ_{3}$: 1. $C\left(F_{2}\right)=\left\{ e\right\}$ when $F_{2}$ is the free group on two generators. 2. $C\left(Φ_{2}\right)=\hat{F}_ω$ when $Φ_{n}$ is the free metabelian group on $n$ generators, and $\hat{F}_ω$ is the free pr…
We study a subgroup $Fr(162\times 4)$ of SU(3) of order 648 which is an extension of $D(9,1,1;2,1,1)$ and whose generators arise from anyonic systems. We show that this group is isomorphic to a semi-direct product $(\mathbb{Z}/18\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/6\mathbb{Z})\rtimes S_3$ with respect to conjugation and we give a presentation of the group. We show that the group $D(18,1,1;2,1,1)$ from the series $(D)$ in the existing classification for finite SU(3)-subgroups is also isomorphic to a semi-direct product $(\mathbb{Z}/18\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/6\mathbb{Z})\rtimes S_3$, also with respect…
Generators and defining relations for wreath products of groups are given. Under some condition (conormality of the generators) they are minimal. In particular, it is just the case for the Sylow subgroups of the symmetric groups.
Let $F_{2,d}$ denote the free class-2-nilpotent group on $d$ generators. We compute the normal zeta functions $ζ^\triangleleft_{F_{2,d}}(s)$, prove that they satisfy local functional equations and determine their abscissae of convergence and pole orders.
In this paper we give a description of the generators of the prime level congruence subgroups of braid groups. Also, we give a new presentation of the symplectic group over a finite field, and we calculate symmetric quotients of the prime level congruence subgroups of braid groups. Finally, we find a finite generating set for the level-3 congruence subgroup of the braid group on 3 strands.
Let G be a right-angled Artin group. We use geometric methods to compute a presentation of the subgroup H of Aut(G) consisting of the automorphisms that send each generator to a conjugate of itself. This generalizes a result of McCool on basis-conjugating automorphisms of free groups.
We show that the class of amalgamated free products of two free groups over a cyclic subgroup admits amenable, faithful and transitive actions on infinite countable sets. This work generalizes the results on such actions for doubles of free group on 2 generators.
For a connected graph L, let G(L) be a group with generators the vertex set of L, subject only to the relations that the ends of each edge commute. Now let H(L) be the kernel of the homomorphism from G(L) to the integers that takes each vertex to 1. M. Bestvina and N. Brady have shown that finiteness properties of H(L) are intimately related to the topology of the clique complex of L. We give a presentation for H(L), with generators the edges of L, and an infinite family of relators for each 1-cycle in L. In the case when the clique complex for L is simply-connected, we give a finite presentat…
A Magnus subgroup of a one-relator group is the free subgroup freely generated by a proper subset of the generators. Two such subgroups can intersect in the obvious way or in a larger, exceptional way. The condition of non-exceptional intersection of Magnus subgroups of a one-relator group is applied to give criteria for the resulting cyclically presented groups to contain nonabelian free subgroups.
