In 1971, Grauert and Remmert proved that a commutative, complex, Noetherian Banach algebra is necessarily finite-dimensional. More precisely, they proved that a commutative, complex Banach algebra has finite dimension over $\C$ whenever all the closed ideals in the algebra are (algebraically) finitely generated. In 1974, Sinclair and Tullo obtained a non-commutative version of this result. In 1978, Ferreira and Tomassini improved the result of Grauert and Remmert by showing that the statement is also true if one replaces `closed ideals' by `maximal ideals in the Šilov boundary of $A$'. We shall give a shorter proof of this latter result, together with some extensions and related examples.
Our goal is to present a new shorter proof for the maximal monotonicity of the Minkowski sum of two maximal monotone multi-valued operators defined in a reflexive Banach space under the classical interiority condition involving their domains.
In a real Banach space, we first prove that the sum of a monotone operator of type (FPV) and maximal monotone operator Rockafellar's constraint qualification is maximal. This prove leads to the solution of most interesting long-time outstanding problem in monotone operator theory is the sum problem.
Let $A$ be the generator of a $C_0$-semigroup $T$ on a Banach space of analytic functions on the open unit disc. If $T$ consists of composition operators, then there exists a holomorphic function $G:{\mathbb D}\to{\mathbb C}$ such that $Af=Gf'$ with maximal domain. The aim of the paper is the study of the reciprocal implication.
The paper deals with multidimensional Bochner-Phillips functional calculus. In the previous paper by the author bounded perturbations of Bernstein functions of several commuting semigroup generators on Banach spaces where considered, conditions for Lipschitzness and estimates for the norm of commutators of such functions where proved. Also in the one-dimensional case the Frechet differentiability of Bernstein functions of semigroup generators on Banach spaces where proved and a generalization of Livschits-Kreĭn trace formula derived. The aim of the present paper is to prove the Frechet differe…
In this paper, we prove that the generator of any bounded analytic semigroup in $(θ,1)$-type real interpolation of its domain and underlying Banach space has maximal $L^1$-regularity, using a duality argument combined with the result of maximal continuous regularity. As an application, we consider maximal $L^1$-regularity of the Dirichlet-Laplacian and the Stokes operator in inhomogeneous $B^s_{q,1}$-type Besov spaces on domains of $\mathbb R^n$, $n\geq 2$.
Using methods from Banach space theory, we prove two new structural results on maximal regularity. The first says that there exist positive analytic semigroups on UMD-Banach lattices, namely $\ell_p(\ell_q)$ for $p \neq q \in (1, \infty)$, without maximal regularity. In the second result we show that the extrapolation problem for maximal regularity behaves in the worst possible way: for every interval $I \subset (1, \infty)$ with $2 \in I$ there exists a family of consistent bounded analytic semigroups $(T_p(z))_{z \in Σ_{π/2}}$ on $L_p(\mathbb{R})$ such that $(T_p(z))$ has maximal regularity …
Hytönen, McIntosh and Portal (J. Funct. Anal., 2008) proved two vector-valued generalizations of the classical Carleson embedding theorem, both of them requiring the boundedness of a new vector-valued maximal operator, and the other one also the type p property of the underlying Banach space as an assumption. We show that these conditions are also necessary for the respective embedding theorems, thereby obtaining new equivalences between analytic and geometric properties of Banach spaces.
We prove that the spaces $\ell_p$, $1<p<\infty, p\ne 2$, and all infinite-dimensional subspaces of their quotient spaces do not admit equivalent almost transitive renormings. This is a step towards the solution of the Banach-Mazur rotation problem, which asks whether a separable Banach space with a transitive norm has to be isometric or isomorphic to a Hilbert space. We obtain this as a consequence of a new property of almost transitive spaces with a Schauder basis, namely we prove that in such spaces the unit vector basis of $\ell_2^2$ belongs to the two-dimensional asymptotic structure and w…
Stopping-time Banach spaces is a collective term for the class of spaces of eventually null integrable processes that are defined in terms of the behaviour of the stopping times with respect to some fixed filtration. From the point of view of Banach space theory, these spaces in many regards resemble the classical spaces such as $L^1$ or $C(Δ)$, but unlike these, they do have unconditional bases. In the present paper we study the canonical bases in the stopping-time spaces in relation to factorising the identity operator thereon. Since we work exclusively with the dyadic-tree filtration, this …
We study some fundamental properties of semicocycles over semigroups of self-mappings of a domain in a Banach space. We prove that any semicocycle over a jointly continuous semigroup is itself jointly continuous. For semicocycles over semigroups which have generator, we establish a sufficient condition for differentiablity with respect to the time variable, and hence for the semicocycle to satisfy a linear evolution problem, giving rise to the notion of `generator' of a semicocycle. Bounds on the growth of a semicocycle with respect to the time variable are given in terms of this generator. Sp…
In this paper, we provide a sublinear function $p$ on ordered Banach spaces, which depends on the order structure of the space. With respect to this $p$, we study the relation between $p$-contractivity of positive semigroups and the $p$-dissipativity of its generators. The positive off-diagonal property of generators is also studied in ordered vector spaces.
Let $ω_1$ be the first uncountable ordinal. By a result of Rudin, bounded operators on the Banach space $C([0,ω_1])$ have a natural representation as $[0,ω_1]\times 0,ω_1]$-matrices. Loy and Willis observed that the set of operators whose final column is continuous when viewed as a scalar-valued function on $[0,ω_1]$ defines a maximal ideal of codimension one in the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(C([0,ω_1]))$ of bounded operators on $C([0,ω_1])$. We give a coordinate-free characterization of this ideal and deduce from it that $\mathscr{B}(C([0,ω_1]))$ contains no other maximal ideals. We then obt…
Maximal monotone operators on a Banach space into its dual can be represented by convex functions bounded below by the duality product. It is natural to ask under which conditions a convex function represents a maximal monotone operator. A satisfactory answer, in the context of reflexive Banach spaces, has been obtained some years ago. Recently, a partial result on non-reflexive Banach spaces was obtained. In this work we study some others conditions which guarantee that a convex function represents a maximal monotone operator in non-reflexive Banach spaces.
We discuss "Banach SN spaces", which include Hilbert spaces, negative Hilbert spaces, and the product of any real Banach space with its dual. We introduce "L-positive" sets, which generalize monotone multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual. We introduce the concepts of "$r_L$-density" and its specialization "quasidensity": the closed quasidense monotone multifunctions from a Banach space into its dual form a (generally) strict subset of the maximally monotone ones, though all surjective maximally monotone and all maximally monotone multifunctions on a reflexive space are quasidense. W…
This paper presents a survey of maximal inequalities for stochastic convolutions in $2$-smooth Banach spaces and their applications to stochastic evolution equations.
We address the following two questions regarding the maximal left ideals of the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(E)$ of bounded operators acting on an infinite-dimensional Banach pace $E$: (Q1) Does $\mathscr{B}(E)$ always contain a maximal left ideal which is not finitely generated? (Q2) Is every finitely-generated, maximal left ideal of $\mathscr{B}(E)$ necessarily of the form \{T\in\mathscr{B}(E): Tx = 0\} (*) for some non-zero $x\in E$? Since the two-sided ideal $\mathscr{F}(E)$ of finite-rank operators is not contained in any of the maximal left ideals given by (*), a positive answer to the se…
This is a 30 page set of lecture notes, in Plain TeX, which were prepared for and presented as a series of lectures (10 1/2 hours over two weeks) at the 2nd Summer School on Banach Spaces, Related Areas and Applications in Prague and Paseky, Czech Republic, during August, 1993. They consist of a largely self-contained exposition of both classical and recent basic facts about maximal monotone operators on Banach spaces, motivated in part by the goal of highlighting several fundamental properties of such operators which remain open questions in nonreflexive Banach spaces.
We are concerned with surjectivity of perturbations of maximal monotone operators in non-reflexive Banach spaces. While in a reflexive setting, a classical surjectivity result due to Rockafellar gives a necessary and sufficient condition to maximal monotonicity, in a non-reflexive space we characterize maximality using a ``enlarged'' version of the duality mapping, introduced previously by Gossez.
We study linear and algebraic structures in sets of Dirichlet series with maximal Bohr's strip. More precisely, we consider a set $\mathscr M$ of Dirichlet series which are uniformly continuous on the right half plane and whose strip of uniform but not absolute convergence has maximal width, i.e., $\frac{1}{2}$. Considering the uniform norm, we show that $\mathscr M$ contains an isometric copy of $\ell_1$ (except zero) and is strongly $\aleph_0$-algebrable. Also, there is a dense $G_δ$ set such that any of its elements generates a free algebra contained in $\mathscr M\cup \{0\}$. Furthermore, …
It is an open problem whether an infinite-dimensional amenable Banach algebra exists whose underlying Banach space is reflexive. We give sufficient conditions for a reflexive, amenable Banach algebra to be finite-dimensional (and thus a finite direct sum of full matrix algebras). If $A$ is a reflexive, amenable Banach algebra such that for each maximal left ideal $L$ of $A$ (i) the quotient $A / L$ has the approximation property and (ii) the canonical map from $A \check{\otimes} L^\perp$ to $(A / L) \wtensor L^\perp$ is open, then $A$ is finite-dimensional. As an application, we show that, if …
In this work we are concerned with maximality of monotone operators representable by certain convex functions in non-reflexive Banach spaces. We also prove that these maximal monotone operators satisfy a Bronsted-Rockafellar type property. We show that if a function in XxX^* and its conjugate are above the duality product in their respective domains, then this function represents a maximal monotone operator.
The maximal roundness of a metric space is a quantity that arose in the study of embeddings and renormings. In the setting of Banach spaces, it was shown by Enflo that roundness takes on a much simpler form. In this paper we provide simple computations of the roundness of many standard Banach spaces, such as $\ell^{p}$, the Lebesgue-Bochner spaces $\ell^{p}(\ell^{q})$ and the Schatten ideals $S_{p}$. We also introduce a property that is dual to that of roundness, which we call coroundness, and make explicit the relation of these properties to the geometric concepts of smoothness and convexity …
In this paper we study the maximal ideals in a commutative ring of bicomplex numbers and then we describe the maximal ideals in a bicomplex algebra. We found that the kernel of a nonzero multiplicative BC-linear functional in a commutative bicomplex Banach algebra need not be a maximal ideal. Finally, we introduce the notion of bicomplex division algebra and generalize the Gelfand-Mazur theorem for the bicomplex division Banach algebra.
A recent result of Leung (Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society, to appear) states that the Banach algebra $\mathscr{B}(X)$ of bounded, linear operators on the Banach space $X=\bigl(\bigoplus_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\ell_\infty^n\bigr)_{\ell_1}$ contains a unique maximal ideal. We show that the same conclusion holds true for the Banach spaces $X=\bigl(\bigoplus_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\ell_\infty^n\bigr)_{\ell_p}$ and $X=\bigl(\bigoplus_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\ell_1^n\bigr)_{\ell_p}$ whenever $p\in(1,\infty)$.
Let $\mathcal{E}(X,d,μ)$ be a Banach function space over a space of homogeneous type $(X,d,μ)$. We show that if the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator $M$ is bounded on the space $\mathcal{E}(X,d,μ)$, then its boundedness on the associate space $\mathcal{E}'(X,d,μ)$ is equivalent to a certain condition $\mathcal{A}_\infty$. This result extends a theorem by Andrei Lerner from the Euclidean setting of $\mathbb{R}^n$ to the setting of spaces of homogeneous type.
The paper develops the theory of topological radicals of Banach Lie algebras and studies the structure of Banach Lie algebras with sufficiently many Lie subalgebras of finite codimensions -- the intersection of all these subalgebras is zero. It is shown that the intersections of certain families of Lie subalgebras (closed Lie subalgebras of finite codimension, closed Lie ideals of finite codimension, closed maximal Lie subalgebras of finite codimension, closed maximal Lie ideals of finite codimension) correspond to different preradicals, and that these preradicals generate the same radical, th…
In this paper we show that the concept of maximal $L^p$-regularity is stable under a large class of unbounded perturbations, namely Staffans-Weiss perturbations. To that purpose, we first prove that the analyticity of semigroups is preserved under this class of perturbations, which is a necessary condition for the maximal regularity. In UMD spaces, $\mathcal{R}$-boundedness conditions are exploited to give conditions guaranteing the maximal regularity. For non-reflexive Banach space, a condition is imposed to the Dirichlet operator associated to the boundary value problem to prove the maximal …
During the 1970s Brézis and Browder presented a now classical characterization of maximal monotonicity of monotone linear relations in reflexive spaces. In this paper, we extend and refine their result to a general Banach space.
This paper is primarily concerned with the problem of maximality for the sum $A+B$ and composition $L^{*}ML$ in non-reflexive Banach space settings under qualifications constraints involving the domains of $A,B,M$. Here $X$, $Y$ are Banach spaces with duals $X^{*}$, $Y^{*}$, $A,B:X\rightrightarrows X^{*}$, $M:Y\rightrightarrows Y^{*}$ are multi-valued maximal monotone operators, and $L:X\to Y$ is linear bounded. Based on the Fitzpatrick function, new characterizations for the maximality of an operator as well as simpler proofs, improvements of previously known results, and several new results …
We provide a convenient framework for the study of the well-posedness of a variety of abstract (integro)differential equations in general Banach function spaces. It allows us to extend and complement the known theory on the maximal regularity of such equations. More precisely, by methods of harmonic analysis, we identify large classes of Banach spaces which are invariant with respect to distributional Fourier multipliers. Such classes include general vector-valued Banach function spaces $Φ$ and/or the scales of Besov and Triebel-Lizorkin spaces defined by $Φ$. We apply this result to the study…
We study problems of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces. This is done by providing an analysis of the structure of small subgroups of the general linear group GL(X), where X is a separable reflexive Banach space. In particular, we provide the first known example of a Banach space X without any equivalent maximal norm, or equivalently such that GL(X) contains no maximal bounded subgroup. Moreover, this space X may be chosen to be super-reflexive.
We present a simple proof of the maximal monotonicity of the subdifferential operator in general Banach spaces. Using the Fitzpatrick function the Rockafellar surjectivity theorem follows as a corollary.
We prove that in a large class of Banach spaces of analytic functions in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ an (unbounded) operator $Af=G\cdot f'+g\cdot f$ with $G,\, g$ analytic in $\mathbb{D}$ generates a $C_0$-semigroup of weighted composition operators if and only if it generates a $C_0$-semigroup. Particular instances of such spaces are the classical Hardy spaces. Our result generalizes previous results in this context and it is related to cocycles of flows of analytic functions on Banach spaces. Likewise, for a large class of non-separable Banach spaces $X $ of analytic functions in $\mathbb{D}$…
In this paper we discuss symmetrically self-dual spaces, which are simply real vector spaces with a symmetric bilinear form. Certain subsets of the space will be called q-positive, where q is the quadratic form induced by the original bilinear form. The notion of q-positivity generalizes the classical notion of the monotonicity of a subset of a product of a Banach space and its dual. Maximal q-positivity then generalizes maximal monotonicity. We discuss concepts generalizing the representations of monotone sets by convex functions, as well as the number of maximally q-positive extensions of a …
We investigate questions of maximal symmetry in Banach spaces and the structure of certain bounded non-unitarisable groups on Hilbert space. In particular, we provide structural information about bounded groups with an essentially unique invariant complemented subspace. This is subsequently combined with rigidity results for the unitary representation of ${\rm Aut}(T)$ on $\ell_2(T)$, where $T$ is the countably infinite regular tree, to describe the possible bounded subgroups of ${\rm GL}(\mathcal H)$ extending a well-known non-unitarisable representation of $\mathbb F_\infty$. As a related re…
This paper is devoted to the study of unbounded derivations on Banach quasi *-algebras with a particular emphasis to the case when they are infinitesimal generators of one parameter automorphisms groups. Both of them, derivations and automorphisms are considered in a weak sense; i.e., with the use of a certain families of bounded sesquilinear forms. Conditions for a weak *-derivation to be the generator of a *-automorphisms group are given.
In the context of general Banach spaces characterizations for the maximal monotonicity of operators with non-empty domain interior as well as stronger continuity properties for such operators are provided.
The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the concept of maximal $L^p$-regularity for perturbed evolution equations in Banach spaces. We mainly consider three classes of perturbations: Miyadera-Voigt perturbations, Desch-Schappacher perturbations, and more general Staffans-Weiss perturbations. We introduce conditions for which the maximal $L^p$-regularity can be preserved under these kind of perturbations. We give examples for a boundary perturbed heat equation in $L^r$-spaces and a perturbed boundary integro-differential equation. We mention that our results mainly extend those in the …
In this paper we study the maximal subspaces of continuous n-homogeneous polynomials on complex and real non separable Banach spaces. In the real case we will prove that if P is a 2-homogeneous polynomial and if there exist a k-dimensional P-maximal subspace then every P-maximal subspace is k-dimensional.
Introducing the notions of (inner) $σ$-derivation, (inner) $σ$-endomorphism and one-parameter group of $σ$-endomorphisms ($σ$-dynamics) on a Banach algebra, we correspond to each $σ$-dynamics a $σ$-derivation named as its $σ$-infinitesimal generator. We show that the $σ$-infinitesimal generator of a $σ$-dynamics of inner $σ$-endomorphisms is an inner $σ$-derivation and deal with the converse. We also establish a nice generalized Leibniz formula and extend the Kleinenckr--Sirokov theorem for $σ$-derivations under certain conditions.
This paper presents a brief survey of the theory of stochastic integration in Banach spaces. Expositions of the stochastic integrals in martingale type 2 spaces and UMD spaces are presented, as well as some applications of the latter to vector-valued Malliavin calculus and the stochastic maximal regularity problem. A new proof of the stochastic maximal regularity theorem is included.
