Let p be a prime and let C be a genus one curve over a number field k representing an element of order dividing p in the Shafarevich-Tate group of its Jacobian. We describe an algorithm which computes the set of D in the Shafarevich-Tate group such that pD = C and obtains explicit models for these D as curves in projective space. This leads to a practical algorithm for performing 9-descents on elliptic curves over the rationals.
We explain how recent work on 3-descent and 4-descent for elliptic curves over Q can be combined to search for generators of the Mordell-Weil group of large height. As an application we show that every elliptic curve of prime conductor in the Stein-Watkins database has rank at least as large as predicted by the conjecture of Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer.
A rational perfect cuboid is a rectangular parallelepiped whose edges and face diagonals are given by rational numbers and whose space diagonal is equal to unity. Recently it was shown that the Diophantine equations describing such a cuboid lead to a couple of parametric families of elliptic curves. Two and three descent methods for calculating their ranks are discussed in the present paper. The elliptic curves in each parametric family are subdivided into two subsets admitting 2-descent and 3-descent methods respectively.
We consider the practical computation of rational points on y^2=x(x^2+ax+b). The algebra necessary for a 4-descent procedure is described. A simple further descent is then described which only uses integer arithmetic. Numerous examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of this extra descent. Currently, the largest point found has height 51.15 or 102.3, depending on which height normalisation you use.
Let $E$ be an elliptic curve over a number field $K$. Descent calculations on $E$ can be used to find upper bounds for the rank of the Mordell-Weil group, and to compute covering curves that assist in the search for generators of this group. The general method of 4-descent, developed in the PhD theses of Siksek, Womack and Stamminger, has been implemented in Magma (when $K={\mathbb Q}$) and works well for elliptic curves with sufficiently small discriminant. We work out the complete descent via 4-isogeny for a family of rational elliptic curves with a rational point of order 4; such a family is of the form $y^2 + x y + a y = x^3 + a x^2$ where $\sqrt{-a} \in \mathbb Q^\times$. In the process we exhibit the 4-isogeny and the isogenous curve, explicitly present the principal homogeneous spaces, and discuss examples by computing the rank.
This is the first in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, with the aim of representing its elements as genus one normal curves of degree n. The methods we describe are practical in the case n=3 for elliptic curves over the rationals, and have been implemented in Magma.
We give explicit formulae for the logarithmic class group pairing on an elliptic curve defined over a number field. Then we relate it to the descent relative to a suitable cyclic isogeny. This allows us to connect the resulting Selmer group with the logarithmic class group of the base. These constructions are explicit and suitable for computer experimentation. From a conceptual point of view, the questions that arise here are analogues of "visibility" questions in the sense of Cremona and Mazur.
In this note, we consider an l-isogeny descent on a pair of elliptic curves over Q. We assume that l > 3 is a prime. The main result expresses the relevant Selmer groups as kernels of simple explicit maps between finite- dimensional F_l-vector spaces defined in terms of the splitting fields of the kernels of the two isogenies. We give examples of proving the l-part of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula for certain curves of small conductor.
We show that the average number of integral points on elliptic curves, counted modulo the natural involution on a punctured elliptic curve, is bounded from above by $2.1 \times 10^8$. To prove it, we design a descent map, whose prototype goes at least back to Mordell, which associates a pair of binary forms to an integral point on an elliptic curve. Other ingredients of the proof include the upper bounds for the number of solutions of a Thue equation by Evertse and Akhtari-Okazaki, and the estimation of the number of binary quartic forms by Bhargava-Shankar. This is the third in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve, with the aim of representing its elements as curves of degree n in P^{n-1}. The methods we describe are practical in the case n=3 for elliptic curves over the rationals, and have been implemented in Magma. One important ingredient of our work is an algorithm for trivialising central simple algebras. This is of independent interest: for example, it could be used for parametrising Brauer-Severi surfaces.
A positive integer that is the area of some rational right triangle is called a congruent number. In an algebraic point of view, being a congruent number means satisfying a system of equations. As early as the 1800s, it is understood that if $n$ is a congruent number, then the equation $nm^2 = uv(u^2 - v^2)$ has a solution in $\mathbb{Z}$. Let E be an elliptic curve over Q (or, more generally, a number field). Then on the one hand, we have the finitely generated abelian group E(Q), on the other hand, there is the Shafarevich-Tate group Sha(Q,E). Descent is a general method of getting information on both of these objects - ideally complete information on the Mordell-Weil group E(Q), and usually partial information on Sha(Q,E). Let h be a p-isogeny of elliptic curves. We describe how to perform h-descents on the nontrivial elements in the Shafarevich-Tate group which are killed by the dual isogeny h'. This makes computation of p-Selmer groups of elliptic curves admitting a p-isogeny over Q feasible for p = 5,7 in cases where an isogeny descent is insufficient and a full p-descent would be infeasible. As an application we complete the verification of the full Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjectural formula for all elliptic curves over Q of rank zero or one and conductor less than 5000.
This is the second in a series of papers in which we study the n-Selmer group of an elliptic curve. In this paper, we show how to realize elements of the n-Selmer group explicitly as curves of degree n embedded in P^{n-1}. The main tool we use is a comparison between an easily obtained embedding into P^{n^2-1} and another map into P^{n^2-1} that factors through the Segre embedding P^{n-1} x P^{n-1} --> P^{n^2-1}. The comparison relies on an explicit version of the local-to-global principle for the n-torsion of the Brauer group of the base field.
Descent via an isogeny on an elliptic curve is used to construct two subrings of the field of rational numbers, which are complementary in a strong sense, and for which Hilbert's Tenth Problem is undecidable. This method further develops that of Poonen, who used elliptic divisibility sequences to obtain undecidability results for some large subrings of the rational numbers.
Transcendental Brauer elements are notoriously difficult to compute. Work of Wittenberg, and later, Ieronymou, gives a method for computing 2-torsion transcendental classes on surfaces that have a genus 1 fibration with rational 2-torsion in the Jacobian fibration. We use ideas from a descent paper of Poonen and Schaefer to remove this assumption on the rational 2-torsion.
We introduce the use of $p$-descent techniques for elliptic surfaces over a perfect field of characteristic not $2$ or $3$. Under mild hypotheses, we obtain an upper bound for the rank of a non-constant elliptic surface. When $p=2$, this bound is an arithmetic refinement of a well-known geometric bound for the rank deduced from Igusa's inequality. This answers a question raised by Ulmer. We give some applications to rank bounds for elliptic surfaces over the rational numbers.
We prove new results on splitting Brauer classes by genus 1 curves, settling in particular the case of degree 7 classes over global fields. Though our method is cohomological in nature, and proceeds by considering the more difficult problem of splitting $μ_N$-gerbes, we use crucial input from the arithmetic of modular curves and explicit $N$-descent on elliptic curves.
We give parametrisation of curves C of genus 2 with a maximal isotropic (ZZ/3)^2 in J[3], where J is the Jacobian variety of C, and develop the theory required to perform descent via (3,3)-isogeny. We apply this to several examples, where it can shown that non-reducible Jacobians have nontrivial 3-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group.
We describe an algorithm that determines a set of unramified covers of a given hyperelliptic curve, with the property that any rational point will lift to one of the covers. In particular, if the algorithm returns an empty set, then the hyperelliptic curve has no rational points. This provides a relatively efficiently tested criterion for solvability of hyperelliptic curves. We also discuss applications of this algorithm to curves of genus 1 and to curves with rational points.
For the hyperelliptic curve C_p with equation y^2=x(x-2p)(x-p)(x+p)(x+2p) with p a prime number, we discuss bounds for the rank of its Jacobian over Q, find many cases having 2-torsion in the associated Shafarevich-Tate group, and we present some results on rational points of C_p.
Let k be a number field and X a smooth projective k-variety. In this paper, we study the information obtainable from descent via torsors under finite k-group schemes on the location of the k-rational points on X within the adelic points. Our main result is that if a curve C/k maps nontrivially into an abelian variety A/k such that A(k) is finite and Sha(k,A) has no nontrivial divisible elements, then the information coming from finite abelian descent cuts out precisely the rational points of C. We split the program of explicit descent of elliptic curves into two parts. For $n=3$ and $n=5,$ we first display a model for the universal elliptic curve $E$ with full level $n$ structure and describe the map of rational points of $E$ to the cohomology group $H^1(G, E[n]).$ Second, we find models in $\PP^{n-1}$ of principal homogeneous spaces of $E$ corresponding to all possible elements of $H^1(G, E[n]),$ i.e. for those elements with trivial period-index obstruction. We are concerned with the question of determining the set $C(\mathbb{Q})$, where $C$ is a curve defined by an equation of the form $y^q=f(x)$, where $q$ is an odd prime and $f$ is a polynomial defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. This question can often be answered using a set which encapsulates information about local solubility of a particular collection of covers of $C$. We define this set and show how to compute it.
We give large families of Shimura curves defined by congruence conditions, all of whose twists lack $p$-adic points for some $p$. For each such curve we give analytically large families of counterexamples to the Hasse principle via the descent (or equivalently étale Brauer-Manin) obstruction to rational points applied to étale coverings coming from the level structure. More precisely, we find infinitely many quadratic fields defined using congruence conditions such that a twist of a related Shimura curve by each of those fields violates the Hasse principle. Given a smooth plane quartic curve C over a field k of characteristic 0, with Jacobian variety J, and a marked rational point P of C(k), we construct a reductive group G and a G-variety X, together with an injection J(k)/2J(k) -> G(k)\X(k). We do this using the Mumford theta group of J, and a construction of Lurie which passes from Heisenberg groups to Lie algebras.

Using a multidimensional large sieve inequality, we obtain a bound for the mean square error in the Chebotarev theorem for division fields of elliptic curves that is as strong as what is implied by the Generalized Riemann Hypothesis. Let C : y^2=f(x) be a hyperelliptic curve defined over the rationals. Let K be a number field and suppose f factors over K as a product of irreducible polynomials f=f_1 f_2...f_r. We shall define a "Selmer set" corresponding to this factorization with the property that if it is empty then the curve C has no rational points. We shall demonstrate the effectiveness of our new method by solving the generalized Fermat equation with signature (3,4,5), which is unassailable via the previously existing methods.

An elliptic divisibility sequence is an integer recurrence sequence associated to an elliptic curve over the rationals together with a rational point on that curve. In this paper we present a higher-dimensional analogue over arbitrary base fields. Suppose E is an elliptic curve over a field K, and P_1, ..., P_n are points on E defined over K. We compute twists of the modular curve $X(13)$ that parametrise the elliptic curves 13-congruent to a given elliptic curve. Searching for rational points on these twists enables us to find non-trivial pairs of 13-congruent elliptic curves over ${\mathbb Q}$, i.e. pairs of non-isogenous elliptic curves over ${\mathbb Q}$ whose 13-torsion subgroups are isomorphic as Galois modules. We give a generalization of the method of "Elliptic Curve Chabauty" to higher genus curves and their Jacobians. This method can sometimes be used in conjunction with covering techniques and a modified version of the Mordell-Weil sieve to provide a complete solution to the problem of determining the set of rational points of an algebraic curve $Y$.
