We study the ratio ergodic theorem (RET) of Hopf for group actions. Under a certain technical condition, if a sequence of sets {F_n} in a group satisfy the RET, then there is a finite set E such that {EF_n} satisfies the Besicovitch covering property. Consequently for free abelian groups of infinite rank there is no sequence F_n along which the RET holds, and in many finitely generated groups, including the discrete Heisenberg group and the free group on d>1 generators, there is no (sub)sequence of balls, in the standard generators, along which the RET holds.
On the other hand, in groups with polynomial growth (including the Heisenberg group, to which our negative results apply) there always exists a sequence of balls along which the RET holds if convergence is understood as a.e. convergence in density (i.e. omitting a sequence of density zero).
We prove martingale-ergodic and ergodic-martingale theorems with continuous parameter for vector valued Bochner integrable functions. We first prove almost everywhere convergence of vector valued martingales with continuous parameter. The norm as well as almost everywhere convergence of martingale-ergodic and ergodic-martingale averages are given. We also obtain the dominant and maximal inequalities. Finally, we show that a.e. martingale-ergodic and ergodic-martingale theorems will coincide under certain assumptions.
A result for subadditive ergodic cocycles is proved that provides more delicate information than Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem. As an application we deduce a multiplicative ergodic theorem generalizing an earlier result of Karlsson-Ledrappier, showing that the growth of a random product of semi-contractions is always directed by some horofunction. We discuss applications of this result to ergodic cocycles of bounded linear operators, holomorphic maps and topical operators, as well as a random mean ergodic theorem.
This paper proves various results concerning non-ergodic actions of locally compact groups and particularly Borel cocycles defined over such actions. The general philosophy is to reduce the study of the cocycle to the study of its restriction to each ergodic component of the action, while being careful to show that all objects arising in the analysis depend measurably on the ergodic component. This allows us to prove a version of the superrigidity theorems for cocycles defined over non-ergodic actions.
In this work, we introduce the concept of term ergodicity for action semigroups and construct semigroups on two dimensional manifolds which are $C^{1+α}$-robustly term ergodic. Moreover, we illustrate the term ergodicity by some exciting examples. At last, we study a problem in the context of circle packing which is concerned to term ergodic.
We prove a ratio ergodic theorem for amenable equivalence relations satisfying a strong form of the Besicovich covering property. We then use this result to study general non-singular actions of non-abelian free groups and establish a ratio ergodic theorem for averages along horospheres.
In this note we show existence of bounded, transitive cocycles over a transitive action of a finitely generated group, and bounded, ergodic cocycles over an ergodic, probability preserving action of $\Bbb Z^d$.
For a totally uniquely ergodic dynamical system, we prove a topological Wiener-Wintner ergodic theorem with polynomial weights under the coincidence of the quasi discrete spectrums of the system in both senses of Abramov and of Hahn-Parry. The result applies to ergodic nilsystems. Fully oscillating sequences can then be constructed on nilmanifolds.
We prove that if an ergodic action of a countable group on a probability space admits a generating partition having finite Shannon entropy then it admits a finite generating partition.
We find limits of some multiple ergodic averages, generalizing a result of Bergelson to the setting of two commuting transformations and actions of amenable groups.
This is an earlier, but more general, version of "An L^1 Ergodic Theorem for Sparse Random Subsequences". We prove an L^1 ergodic theorem for averages defined by independent random selector variables, in a setting of general measure-preserving group actions. A far more readable version of this paper is in the works.
In this work, we address ergodicity of smooth actions of finitely generated semi-groups on an m-dimensional closed manifold M. We provide sufficient conditions for such an action to be ergodic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. Our results improve the main result in [8], where the ergodicity for one dimensional fiber was proved. We will introduce Markov partition for finitely generated semi-group actions and then we establish ergodicity for a large class of finitely generated semi-groups of C^{1+alpha}-diffeomorphisms that admit a Markov partition. Moreover, we present some transitivity cri…
We consider stationary stochastic dynamical systems evolving on a compact metric space, by perturbing a deterministic dynamics with a random noise, added according to an arbitrary probabilistic distribution. We prove the maximal and pointwise ergodic theorems for the transfer operators associated to such systems. The results are extensions to noisy systems of some of the fundamental ergodic theorems for deterministic systems.
In this paper, we prove a criterion for the local ergodicity of non-uniformly hyperbolic symplectic maps with singularities. Our result is an extension of a theorem of Liverani and Wojtkowski.
For totally ergodic Z^2-actions a collection of weak limits provide the set {2,4, ..., 2 ^ n} of spectral multiplicities for their tensor product. Our conditions allow to obtain a similar result for mixing actions via some limit procedure.
An algebraic $Γ$-action is an action of a countable group $Γ$ on a compact abelian group $X$ by continuous automorphisms of $X$. We prove that any expansive algebraic action of a finitely generated nilpotent group $Γ$ on a connected group $X$ is ergodic. We also show that this result does not hold for actions of polycyclic groups.
Let $K$ be a compact metrizable group and $\Ga$ be a group of automorphisms of $K$. We first show that each $\ap \in \Ga$ is distal on $K$ implies $\Ga$ itself is distal on $K$, a local to global correspondence provided $\Ga$ is a generalized $\ov{FC}$-group or $K$ is a connected finite-dimensional group. We show that $\Ga$ contains an ergodic automorphism when $\Ga$ is nilpotent and ergodic on a connected finite-dimensional compact abelian group $K$.
We introduce methods that allow to derive continuous-time versions of various discrete-time ergodic theorems. We then illustrate these methods by giving simple proofs and refinements of some known results as well as establishing new results of interest.
We present a lecture note on Thouvenot's proof of the Roth-Furstenberg theorem and joining proofs of Furstenberg's theorems on multiple progression average mixing for weakly mixing transformations.
Given $k>0$ and an Abelian countable discrete group $G$ with elements of infinite order, we construct $(i)$ rigid funny rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(ii)$ 0-type funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions of ergodic index $k$, $(iii)$ funny rank-one i.m.p. $G$-actions $T$ of ergodic index 2 such that the product $T\times T^{-1}$ is not ergodic. It is shown that $T\times T^{-1}$ is conservative for each funny rank-one $G$-action $T$.
This work contains the following results: the trajectory fullness of the homoclinic groups, their connections with factors, K-property, weak multiple mixing; the ergodicity of the weakly homoclinic group for Gauss and Poisson actions; the triviality of the weakly homoclinic group for classes of rank-1 actions. Some open problems are discussed.
A simple proof of the fact that each rank-one infinite measure preserving (i.m.p.) transformation is subsequence weakly rationally ergodic is found. Some classes of funny rank-one i.m.p. actions of Abelian groups are shown to be subsequence weakly rationally ergodic. A constructive definition of finite funny rank for actions of arbitrary infinite countable groups is given. It is shown that the ergodic i.m.p. transformations of balanced finite funny rank are subsequence weakly rationally ergodic. It is shown that the ergodic probability preserving transformations of exact finite rank, the ergod…
We prove a version of ergodic theorem for an action of an amenable group, where a Fø lner sequence needs not to be tempered. Instead, it is assumed that a function satisfies certain mixing condition.
We extend constructions of Hahn-Katznelson and Pavlov to Z^d-actions on symbolic dynamical spaces with prescribed topological and ergodic properties. More specifically, we describe a method to build Z^d-actions which are (totally) minimal, (totally) strictly ergodic and have positive topological entropy.
Karlsson and Margulis proved in the setting of uniformly convex geodesic spaces, which additionally satisfy a nonpositive curvature condition, an ergodic theorem that focuses on the asymptotic behavior of integrable cocycles of nonexpansive mappings over an ergodic measure-preserving transformation. In this note we show that this result holds true when assuming a weaker notion of uniform convexity.
Amos Nevo established the pointwise ergodic theorem in $L^p$ for measure-preserving actions of $\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{R})$ on probability spaces with respect to ball averages and every $p>1$. This paper shows by explicit example that Nevo's Theorem cannot be extended to $p=1$.
We show that a $k$-linear pointwise ergodic theorem on an ergodic measure-preserving system implies a uniform $k$-linear nilsequence Wiener-Wintner theorem on that system. The assumption is known to hold for arbitrary systems and $k=2$ (due to Bourgain) and for distal systems and arbitrary $k$ (due to Huang, Shao, and Ye).
We establish pointwise ergodic theorems for a large class of natural averages on simple Lie groups of real-rank-one, going well beyond the radial case considered previously. The proof is based on a new approach to pointwise ergodic theorems, which is independent of spectral theory. Instead, the main new ingredient is the use of direct geometric arguments in hyperbolic space.
We consider infinite measure-preserving non-primitive self-similar tiling systems in Euclidean space $\mathbb R^d$. We establish the second-order ergodic theorem for such systems, with exponent equal to the Hausdorff dimension of a graph-directed self-similar set associated with the substitution rule.
The purpose of this note is to present my understanding of Tim Austin's proof of the multiple ergodic theorem for commuting transformations, emphasizing on the use of joinings, extensions and factors. The existence of a sated extension, which is a key argument in the proof, is presented in a general context.
Let $Γ$ be an amenable countable discrete group. Fix an ergodic free nonsingular action of $Γ$ on a nonatomic standard probability space. Let $G$ be a compactly generated locally compact second countable group such that the closure of the group of inner automorphisms of $G$ is compact in the natural topology. It is shown that there exists a {\it bounded} ergodic $G$-valued cocycle of $Γ$.
The principal results proved in this expository thesis are the IP polynomial Szemerédi theorem for nilpotent groups and the multiple term return times theorem with nilsequence weights. It also contains extensions of the convergence theorem for nilpotent polynomial multiple ergodic averages and the return times theorem to locally compact second countable amenable groups.
We consider a family of homoclinic groups and Gordin's type invariants of measure-preserving actions, state their connections with factors, full groups, ranks, rigidity, multiple mixing and realize such invariants in the class of Gaussian and Poisson suspensions.
The survey presents the main developments obtained over the last decade regarding pointwise ergodic theorems for measure preserving actions of locally compact groups. The survey includes an exposition of the solutions to a number of long standing open problems in ergodic theory, some of which are very recent and have not yet appeared elsewhere.
We unify and extend some previous results about cubic ergodic averages and sets of positive density in products of groups. This provides a joint generalization of earlier work of the author in the case of two commuting actions of an amenable group, and of Q. Chu's recent result on a a finite number of commuting transformations.
We present a general new method for constructing pointwise ergodic sequences on countable groups, which is applicable to amenable as well as to non-amenable groups and treats both cases on an equal footing. The principle underlying the method is that both cases can be viewed as instances of the general ergodic theory of amenable equivalence relations.
We consider sequences of Davenport type or Gelfond type and prove that sequences of Davenport exponent larger than $\frac{1}{2}$ are good sequences of weights for the ergodic theorem, and that the ergodic sums weighted by a sequence of strong Gelfond property is well controlled almost everywhere. We prove that for any $q$-multiplicative sequence, the Gelfond property implies the strong Gelfond property and that sequences realized by dynamical systems can be fully oscillating and have the Gelfond property.
For a weakly mixing bounded rank-one construction the disjointness of its powers is proved. For non-rigid constructions we get minimal self-joinings. Examples of non-mixing rank one actions with explicit weak closure are proposed.
We present a survey of ergodic theorems for actions of algebraic and arithmetic groups recently established by the authors, as well as some of their applications. Our approach is based on spectral methods employing the unitary representation theory of the groups involved. This allows the derivation of ergodic theorems with a rate of convergence, an important phenomenon which does not arise in classical ergodic theory. Quantitative ergodic theorems give rise to new and previously inaccessible applications, and we demonstrate the remarkable diversity of such applications by presenting several nu…
It is shown that each non-compact locally compact second countable non-(T) group $G$ possesses non-strongly ergodic weakly mixing IDPFT Poisson actions of arbitrary Krieger's type. These actions are amenable if and only if $G$ is amenable. If $G$ has the Haagerup property then (and only then) these actions can be chosen of 0-type. If $G$ is amenable and unimodular then $G$ has weakly mixing Bernoulli actions of any possible Krieger's type.
In the present paper, we consider random invariant densities and the mean ergodic theorem for Markov operator cocycles which are applicable to quenched type random dynamical systems. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of random invariant densities for Markov operator cocycles and establish the mean ergodic theorem for generalized linear operator cocycles over a weakly sequentially complete Banach space. The advantage of the result is that we show the implication of weak precompactness for almost every environment to strong convergence in the global sense.
Given a space $X$, a $σ$-algebra $\mathfrak{B}$ on $X$ and a measurable map $T:X \to X$, we say that a measure $μ$ is half-invariant if, for any $B \in \mathfrak{B}$, we have $μ(T^{-1}(B)\leq μ(B)$. In this note we present a generalization of Birkhoff's Ergodic theorem to $σ$-finite half-invariant measures.
The mapping class group of a compact oriented surface of genus greater than one with boundary acts ergodically on connected components of the representation variety corresponding to a connected compact Lie group, for every choice of conjugacy class boundary condition.
We prove maximal inequalities for concentric ball and spherical shell averages on a general Gromov hyperbolic group, in arbitrary probability preserving actions of the group. Under an additional condition, satisfied for example by all groups acting isometrically and properly discontinuously on CAT(-1) spaces, we prove a pointwise ergodic theorem with respect to a sequence of probability measures supported on concentric spherical shells.
A volume growth-based proof of the Multiplicative Ergodic Theorem for Banach spaces is presented, following the approach of Ruelle for cocycles acting on a Hilbert space. As a consequence, we obtain a volume growth interpretation for the Lyapunov exponents of a Banach space cocycle.
We prove an L^1 subsequence ergodic theorem for sequences chosen by independent random selector variables, thereby showing the existence of universally L^1-good sequences nearly as sparse as the set of squares. In the process, we prove that a certain deterministic condition implies a weak maximal inequality for a sequence of \ell^1 convolution operators.
We define a notion of entropy for an infinite family $\mathcal{C}$ of measurable sets in a probability space. We show that the mean ergodic theorem holds uniformly for $\mathcal{C}$ under every ergodic transformation if and only if $\mathcal{C}$ has zero entropy. When the entropy of $\mathcal{C}$ is positive, we establish a strong converse showing that the uniform mean ergodic theorem fails generically in every isomorphism class, including the isomorphism classes of Bernoulli transformations. As a corollary of these results, we establish that every strong mixing transformation is uniformly str…
This note is devoted to infinite self-similar rank 1 constructions and their applications to the spectral theory of dynamical systems. The properties of orthogonal operators induced by self-similar constructions provide some unusual spectral properties of Gaussian and Poisson suspensions.
