We consider stationary stochastic dynamical systems evolving on a compact metric space, by perturbing a deterministic dynamics with a random noise, added according to an arbitrary probabilistic distribution. We prove the maximal and pointwise ergodic theorems for the transfer operators associated to such systems. The results are extensions to noisy systems of some of the fundamental ergodic theorems for deterministic systems.
In this paper, we establish a noncommutative analogue of Calderón's transference principle, which allows us to deduce noncommutative ergodic maximal inequalities from the special case---operator-valued maximal inequalities. As applications, we deduce dimension-free estimates of noncommutative Wiener's maximal ergodic inequality and noncommutative Stein-Calderón's maximal ergodic inequality over Euclidean spaces. We also show the corresponding individual ergodic theorems. To show Wiener's pointwise ergodic theorem, we construct a dense subset on which pointwise convergence holds following a som…
A tale of two vortices: how numerical ergodic theory and transfer operators reveal fundamental changes to coherent structures in non-autonomous dynamical systems
We consider in this paper the set of transfer times between two measurable subsets of positive measures in an ergodic probability measure-preserving system of a countable abelian group. If the lower asymptotic density of the transfer times is small, then we prove this set must be either periodic or Sturmian. Our results can be viewed as ergodic-theoretical extensions of some classical sumset theorems in compact abelian groups due to Kneser. Our proofs are based on a correspondence principle for action sets which was developed previously by the first two authors.
Ergodic optimization and discrete weak KAM theory are two parallel theories with several results in common. For instance, the Mather set is the locus of orbits which minimize the ergodic averages of a given observable. In the favorable cases, the observable is cohomologous to its ergodic minimizing value on the Mather set, and the discrete weak KAM solution plays the role of the transfer function. One possibility of construction of such a coboundary is by using the non linear Lax-Oleinik operator. The other possibility is by using a discounted cohomological equation. It is known that the disco…
We investigate the relation between the distributions appearing in the study of ergodic averages of parabolic flows (e.g. in the work of Flaminio-Forni) and the ones appearing in the study of the statistical properties of hyperbolic dynamical systems (i.e. the eigendistributions of the transfer operator). In order to avoid, as much as possible, technical issues that would cloud the basic idea, we limit ourselves to a simple flow on the torus. Our main result is that, roughly, the growth of ergodic averages of a parabolic flows is controlled by the eigenvalues of a suitable transfer operator as…
This paper is devoted to the study of noncommutative ergodic theorems for connected amenable locally compact groups. For a dynamical system $(\mathcal{M},τ,G,σ)$, where $(\mathcal{M},τ)$ is a von Neumann algebra with a normal faithful finite trace and $(G,σ)$ is a connected amenable locally compact group with a well defined representation on $\mathcal{M}$, we try to find the largest noncommutative function spaces constructed from $\mathcal{M}$ on which the individual ergodic theorems hold. By using the Emerson-Greenleaf's structure theorem, we transfer the key question to proving the ergodic t…

Given a stochastic nonlinear system controlled over a possibly noisy communication channel, the paper studies the largest class of channels for which there exist coding and control policies so that the closed-loop system is stochastically stable. The stability criterion considered is asymptotic mean stationarity (AMS). We develop a general method based on ergodic theory and probability to derive fundamental bounds on information transmission requirements leading to stabilization. Through this method we develop a new notion of entropy which is tailored to derive lower bounds for asymptotic mean…
We adapt to $C^r$ Anosov flows on compact manifolds a construction for $C^r$ discrete-time hyperbolic dynamics ($r>1$), obtaining anisotropic Banach or Hilbert spaces on which the resolvent of the generator of weighted transfer operators for the flow is quasi-compact. We apply this to study the ergodic integrals of the horocycle flows $h_ρ$ of $C^r$ codimension one mixing Anosov flows. In dimension three, for any suitably bunched $C^3$ contact Anosov flow with orientable strong-stable distribution, we establish power-law convergence of the ergodic average. We thereby implement the program of G…
In this paper, we establish the quantitative mean ergodic theorems for two subclasses of power bounded operators on a fixed noncommutative $L_p$-space with $1<p<\infty$, which mainly concerns power bounded invertible operators and Lamperti contractions. Our approach to the quantitative ergodic theorems is the noncommutative square function inequalities. The establishment of the latter involves several new ingredients such as the almost orthogonality and Calderón-Zygmund arguments for non-smooth kernels from semi-commutative harmonic analysis, the extension properties of the operators under con…
In this review we survey the literature on mean-field coupled maps. We start with the early works from the physics literature, arriving to some recent results from ergodic theory studying the thermodynamic limit of globally coupled maps and the associated self-consistent transfer operators. We also give few pointers to related research fields dealing with mean-field coupled systems in continuous time, and applications.

We prove a central limit theorem for the real and imaginary part and the absolute value of the Riemann zeta-function sampled along a vertical line in the critical strip with respect to an ergodic transformation similar to the Boolean transformation. This result complements a result by Steuding who has proven a strong law of large numbers for the same system. As a side result we state a general central limit theorem for a class of unbounded observables on the real line over the same ergodic transformation. The proof is based on the transfer operator method.
