Density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed for the high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) isomers of a series of iron(II) spin crossover complexes with nitrogen ligands. The calculated charge densities have been analyzed in the framework of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM). For a number of iron(II) complexes with substituted tris(pyrazolyl) ligands the energy difference between HS and LS isomers, the spin state splitting, has been decomposed into atomic contributions in order to rationalize changes of the spin state splitting due to substituent effects.
In a recent paper [J. Organomet. Chem. (2013) doi: 10.1016 /j.jorganchem. 2013.03.047] analyzing the bonding mode of Trimethylenemethane (TMM) with some metal carbonyls, Mousavi and Frenking have declared the absence of bond paths, the so-called missed bond paths, between metal atoms and terminal carbon atoms in several complexes. In this communication, it is first demonstrated that the presupposition of the equivalence of a bond path and a chemical bond within the context of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) is superficial and basically flawed which is not only against with the…
DFT is used throughout nanoscience, especially when modeling spin-dependent properties that are important in spintronics. But standard quantum chemical methods (both CCSD(T) and self-consistent semilocal density functional calculations) fail badly for the spin adiabatic energy difference in Fe(II) spin-crossover complexes. We show that all-electron fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo can be converged at significant computational cost, and that the B3LYP single-determinant has sufficiently accurate nodes, providing benchmarks for these systems. We also find that density-corrected DFT, using Hartre…
The development of optical power limiting materials is important to protect individuals or materials from intense laser irradiation. The photophysical behavior of Os(II) polypyridinyl complexes having aromatic hydrocarbon terpyridyl ligands has received considerable attention as systems exhibiting intramolecular energy transfer to yield a long excited states lifetime. Here we present a focused discussion to illustrate the photophysical behavior of transition metal complexes with modified terpyridyl ligands, utilizing density functional theory. Our DFT studies of the excited state behavior of O…
Density functional methods have been applied to calculate the quadrupole splitting of a series of iron(II) spin crossover complexes. Experimental and calculated values are in reasonable agreement. In one case spin-orbit coupling is necessary to explain the very small quadrupole splitting value of 0.77 mm/s at 293 K for a high-spin isomer.
Density functional theory (DFT) provides a theoretical framework for efficient and fairly accurate calculations of the electronic structure of molecules and crystals. The main features of density functional theory are described and DFT methods are compared with wavefunction-based methods like the Hartree-Fock approach. Some recent applications of DFT to spin crossover complexes are reviewed, e.g., the calculation of Mössbauer parameters, of vibrational modes and of differences of entropy, vibrational energy, and total electronic energy between high-spin and low-spin isomers.
This paper presents an approach for obtaining accurate interaction energies at the DFT level for systems where dispersion interactions are important. This approach combines Becke and Johnson's [J. Chem. Phys. 127, 154108 (2007)] method for the evaluation of dispersion energy corrections and a Hirshfeld method for partitioning of molecular polarizability tensors into atomic contributions. Due to the availability of atomic polarizability tensors, the method is extended to incorporate anisotropic contributions, which prove to be important for complexes of lower symmetry. The method is validated f…

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) shielding constants of transition metals in solvated complexes are computed at the relativistic density functional theory (DFT) level. The solvent effects evaluated with subsystem-DFT approaches are compared with the reference solvent shifts predicted from supermolecular calculations. Two subsystem-DFT approaches are analyzed -- in the standard frozen density embedding (FDE) scheme the transition metal complexes are embedded in an environment of solvent molecules whose density is kept frozen, in the second approach the densities of the complex and of its enviro…
The lytic polysaccharide monooxygenase (LPMO) enzymes boost polysaccharide depolymerization through oxidative chemistry, which has fueled the hope for more energy-efficient production of biofuel. We have recently proposed a mechanism for the oxidation of the polysaccharide substrate (Hedegård & Ryde, Chem. Sci. 2018, 9, 3866). In this mechanism, complexes with superoxide, oxyl, as well as hydroxyl (i.e. [CuO2]+, [CuO]+ and [CuOH]2+) cores were involved. These complexes can have both singlet and triplet spin states, and both spin-states may be important for how LPMOs function during catalytic t…
The adsorption of gas molecules (CO, NH$_3$, CO$_2$ ) on Polyaniline Emeraldine salt has been performed to study gas sensing. Density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations have been carried out to compute the response mechanism of polyaniline emeraldine salt (PANI ES) oligoanalinines (with two to six rings) to gas molecules. The optimized geometry and electronic structure corresponding to molecule and complexes are computed with the pseudo-potential and full-potential methods. The absorption spectra corresponding to polyaniline emeraldine sa…
High-throughput computational screening has emerged as a critical component of materials discovery. Direct density functional theory (DFT) simulation of inorganic materials and molecular transition metal complexes is often used to describe subtle trends in inorganic bonding and spin-state ordering, but these calculations are computationally costly and properties are sensitive to the exchange-correlation functional employed. To begin to overcome these challenges, we trained artificial neural networks (ANNs) to predict quantum-mechanically-derived properties, including spin-state ordering, sensi…
Standard density functional approximations often give questionable results for odd-electron radical complexes, with the error typically attributed to self-interaction. In density corrected density functional theory (DC-DFT), certain classes of density functional theory calculations are significantly improved by using densities more accurate than the self-consistent densities. We discuss how to identify such cases, and how DC-DFT applies more generally. To illustrate, we calculate potential energy surfaces of HO$\cdot$Cl$^-$ and HO$\cdot$H$_2$O complexes using various common approximate functio…
Density functional theory (DFT) embedding provides a formally exact framework for interfacing correlated wave-function theory (WFT) methods with lower-level descriptions of electronic structure. Here, we report techniques to improve the accuracy and stability of WFT-in-DFT embedding calculations. In particular, we develop spin-dependent embedding potentials in both restricted and unrestricted orbital formulations to enable WFT-in-DFT embedding for open-shell systems, and we develop an orbital-occupation-freezing technique to improve the convergence of optimized effective potential (OEP) calcul…
While density functional theory (DFT) is widely applied for its combination of cost and accuracy, corrections (e.g., DFT+U) that improve it are often needed to tackle correlated transition-metal chemistry. In principle, the functional form of DFT+U, consisting of a set of localized atomic orbitals (AO) and a quadratic energy penalty for deviation from integer occupations of those AOs, enables the recovery of the exact conditions of piecewise linearity and the derivative discontinuity. Nevertheless, for practical transition-metal complexes, where both atomic states and ligand orbitals participa…
Transition metal complexes are ubiquitous in biology and chemical catalysis, yet they remain difficult to accurately describe with ab initio methods due to the presence of a large degree of dynamic electron correlation, and, in some cases, strong static correlation which results from a manifold of low-lying states. Progress has been hindered by a scarcity of high quality gas-phase experimental data, while exact ab initio predictions are usually computationally unaffordable due to the large size of the systems. In this work, we present a data set of 34 3d metal-containing complexes with gas-pha…
A recently proposed "DFT+dispersion" treatment (Rajchel et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 2010, 104, 163001) is described in detail and illustrated by more examples. The formalism derives the dispersion-free density functional theory (DFT) interaction energy and combines it with the dispersion energy from separate DFT calculations. It consists in the self-consistent polarization of DFT monomers restrained by the exclusion principle via the Pauli blockade technique. Within the monomers a complete exchange-correlation potential should be used, but between them only the exact exchange operates. The appli…
Despite its widespread use, the predictive accuracy of density functional theory (DFT) is hampered by delocalization errors, especially for correlated systems such as transition-metal complexes. Two complementary tuning strategies have been developed to reduce delocalization error: eliminating the global curvature with respect to charge addition or removal, and computing a linear response Hubbard U as a measure of local curvature at the metal center at fixed charge and applying it to the transition-metal complex in a DFT+U framework. We investigate the relationship between the two measures of …
We present a detailed analysis of several time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) methods, including conventional hybrid functionals and two types of non-empirically tuned range-separated functionals, for predicting a diverse set of electronic excitations in DNA nucleobase monomers and dimers. This large and extensive set of excitations comprises a total of 50 different transitions (for each tested DFT functional) that includes several n $\rightarrow$ π and π $\rightarrow$ π* valence excitations, long-range charge-transfer excitations, and extended Rydberg transitions (complete with benchmark calculations…
DNA base-gold interactions are studied theoretically at the DFT level using Au3 and Au4 clusters as simple catalytic models for Au particles. The bonding between DNA bases and gold clusters occurs via the anchoring of a Au atom to the N or O atoms of the bases. In the most stable planar base-Au3 complexes, the Au-N or Au-O anchor bonds are reinforced by N-H...Au bonds. The mechanism of formation of these nonconventional H-bonds is discussed.
Surface-enhanced Raman scattering and density functional theory study of selected-lanthanide-citrate complexes (lanthanide: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, and Gd)
Semi-empirical quantum mechanical methods traditionally expand the electron density in a minimal, valence-only electron basis set. The minimal-basis approximation causes molecular polarization to be underestimated, and hence intermolecular interaction energies are also underestimated, especially for intermolecular interactions involving charged species. In this work, the third-order self-consistent charge density functional tight-binding method (DFTB3) is augmented with an auxiliary response density using the chemical-potential equalization (CPE) method and an empirical dispersion correction (…
Devices based on deep-blue emitting iridium (III) complexes with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands have recently been shown to give excellent performance as phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs). To facilitate the design of even better deep-blue phosphorescent emitters we carried out density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the lowest triplet ($T_1$) potential-energy surfaces (PES) upon lengthening the iridium-ligand (Ir-C) bonds. Relativistic time dependent-DFT (TDDFT) calculations demonstrate that this changes the nature of $T_1$ from a highly-emissive metal-to-lig…
We propose a physically motivated decomposition of DFT 3-body nonadditive interaction energies into the exchange and density-deformation (polarization) components. The exchange component represents the effect of the Pauli exclusion in the wave function of the trimer and is found to be challenging for density functional approximations (DFAs). The remaining density-deformation nonadditivity is less dependent upon the DFAs. Numerical demonstration is carried out for rare gas atom trimers, Ar$_2$-HX (X = F, Cl) complexes, and small hydrogen-bonded and van der Waals molecular systems. None of the t…

Coordination compounds with tin centre surrounded by both organic and inorganic ligands ([SnI4{(C6H5)3PO}2], [SnI4{(C6H5)2SO}2] and [SnI4(C5H5NO)2]), acting as molecular semiconductors are in the spotlight of this article. This is a new class of hybrid semiconducting materials where optoelectronic properties of inorganic core (SnI4) were tuned by organic ligands. The valence band is located at inorganic part of the molecule while the conduction band is made of carbon-based orbitals. This suggests a great importance of hydrogen bonds where iodine atoms play the role of an acceptor. Weak intermo…
Approximate density functional theory (DFT) suffers from many-electron self- interaction error, otherwise known as delocalization error, that may be diagnosed and then corrected through elimination of the deviation from exact piecewise linear behavior between integer electron numbers. Although paths to correction of energetic delocalization error are well- established, the impact of these corrections on the electron density is less well-studied. Here, we compare the effect on density delocalization of DFT+U, global hybrid tuning, and range- separated hybrid tuning on a diverse test set of 32 t…
The nature of metal silane sigma-bond interaction has been investigated in several key systems by a range of experimental and computational techniques. The structure of [Cp'Mn(CO)2(eta2-HSiHPh2)] 1 has been determined by single crystal neutron diffraction, and the geometry at the Si atom is shown to approximate to a trigonal bipyramid. This complex is similar to [Cp'Mn(CO)2(eta2-HSiFPh2)] 2, whose structure and bonding characteristics have recently been determined by charge density studies based on high-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction data. The geometry at the Si atom in these sigma-b…
The accurate description of open-shell molecules, in particular of transition metal complexes and clusters, is still an important challenge for quantum chemistry. While density-functional theory (DFT) is widely applied in this area, the sometimes severe limitations of its currently available approximate realizations often preclude its application as a predictive theory. Here, we review the foundations of DFT applied to open-shell systems, both within the nonrelativistic and the relativistic framework. In particular, we provide an in-depth discussion of the exact theory, with a focus on the rol…
We discuss the system-specific optimization of long-range separated density functional theory (DFT) for the prediction of electronic properties relevant for a photocatalytic cycle based on an Ir(III) photosensitizer (IrPS). Special attention is paid to the charge-transfer properties, which are of key importance for the photoexcitation dynamics, but and cannot be correctly described by means of conventional DFT. The optimization of the range-separation parameter using the $Δ$SCF method is discussed for IrPS including its derivatives and complexes with electron donors and acceptors used in photo…
Recently, some new series of heteroleptic ruthenium-based dyes, the so-called RD dyes, were designed and synthesized showing better performances compared to the well-known homoleptic N719. In this work, using the density-functional theory and its time-dependent extension, we have investigated the electronic structure and absorption spectra of these newly synthesized dyes, and compared the results to those of N3 dye to describe the variations of the properties due to the molecular engineering of ancillary ligand. We have shown that the calculation results of the absorption spectra for these dye…
We develop a generalization of the Kohn-Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT) + Hubbard $U$ (DFT+$U$) method to the excited-state regime. This has the form of Hubbard $U$ corrected linear-response time-dependent DFT, or `TDDFT+$U$'. Combined with calculated linear-response Hubbard $U$ parameters, it may provide a computationally light, first-principles method for the simulation of tightly-bound excitons on transition-metal ions. Our presented implementation combines linear-scaling DFT+$U$ and linear-scaling TDDFT, but the approach is broadly applicable. In detailed benchmark tests on two Ni-…
Ranking the binding of small molecules to protein receptors through physics-based computation remains challenging. Though inroads have been made using free energy methods, these fail when the underlying classical mechanical force fields are insufficient. In principle, a more accurate approach is provided by quantum mechanical density functional theory (DFT) scoring, but even with approximations, this has yet to become practical on drug discovery-relevant timescales and resources. Here, we describe how to overcome this barrier using algorithms for DFT calculations that scale on widely available…
Approximate density functional theory (DFT) has become indispensable owing to its cost-accuracy trade-off in comparison to more computationally demanding but accurate correlated wavefunction theory. To date, however, no single density functional approximation (DFA) with universal accuracy has been identified, leading to uncertainty in the quality of data generated from DFT. With electron density fitting and transfer learning, we build a DFA recommender that selects the DFA with the lowest expected error with respect to gold standard but cost-prohibitive coupled cluster theory in a system-speci…
The density functional theory (DFT)+$U$ method is a pragmatic and effective approach for calculating the ground-state properties of strongly-correlated systems, and linear response calculations are widely used to determine the requisite Hubbard parameters from first principles. We provide a detailed treatment of spin within this linear response approach, demonstrating that the conventional Hubbard $U$ formula, unlike the conventional DFT+$U$ corrective functional, incorporates interactions that are off-diagonal in the spin indices and places greater weight on one spin channel over the other. W…
Computational virtual high-throughput screening (VHTS) with density functional theory (DFT) and machine-learning (ML)-acceleration is essential in rapid materials discovery. By necessity, efficient DFT-based workflows are carried out with a single density functional approximation (DFA). Nevertheless, properties evaluated with different DFAs can be expected to disagree for the cases with challenging electronic structure (e.g., open shell transition metal complexes, TMCs) for which rapid screening is most needed and accurate benchmarks are often unavailable. To quantify the effect of DFA bias, w…
The nuclear waste problem is one of the main interests of the rare earth and actinide elements chemistry. Studies of Actinide-containing compounds are at the frontier of the applications of current theoretical methods due to the need to consider relativistic effects and approximations to the Dirac equation in them. Here, we employ four-component relativistic quantum calculations and scalar approximations to understand the contribution of f-type atomic orbitals in the chemical bonding of actinides (Ac) to organic ligands. We studied the relativistic quantum structure of an isostructural family …
Dangerous radioactive waste leftover from the Cold War era nuclear weapons production continues to contaminate sixteen sites around the United States. Although many challenges and obstacles exist in decontaminating these sites, two particularly difficult tasks associated with cleanup of this waste are extracting and separating actinide elements from the remainder of the solution, containing other actinide elements and non actinide elements. Developing effective methods for performing these separations is possible by designing new chelating agents that form stable complexes with actinide elemen…
