The set of hypertrees on $n$ vertices can be endowed with a poset structure. J. McCammond and J. Meier computed the dimension of the unique non zero homology group of the hypertree poset. We give another proof of their result and use the theory of species to determine the action of the symmetric group on this homology group, which is linked with the anti-cyclic structure of the $\operatorname{Prelie}$ operad. We also compute the action on the Whitney homology of the poset.

We adapt here the computation of characters on incidence Hopf algebras introduced by W. Schmitt in the 1990s to a family mixing bounded and unbounded posets. We then apply our results to the family of hypertree posets and partition posets. As a consequence, we obtain some enumerative formulas and a new proof for the computation of the Moebius numbers of the hypertree posets. Moreover, we compute the coproduct of the incidence Hopf algebra and recover a known formula for the number of hypertrees with fixed valency set and edge sizes set.
Hypertrees and noncrossing trees are well-established objects in the combinatorics literature, but the hybrid notion of a noncrossing hypertree has received less attention. In this article I investigate the poset of noncrossing hypertrees as an induced subposet of the hypertree poset. Its dual is the face poset of a simplicial complex, one that can be identified with a generalized cluster complex of type $A$. The first main result is that this noncrossing hypertree complex is homeomorphic to a piecewise spherical complex associated with the noncrossing partition lattice and thus it has a natur…
C. Jensen, J. McCammond and J. Meier have used weighted hypertrees to compute the Euler characteristic of a subgroup of the automorphism group of a free product. Weighted hypertrees also appear in the study of the homology of the hypertree poset. We link them to decorated hypertrees after a general study on decorated hypertrees, which we enumerate using box trees.---C.
We define a poset of partitions associated to an operad. We prove that the operad is Koszul if and only if the poset is Cohen-Macaulay. In one hand, this characterisation allows us to compute the homology of the poset. This homology is given by the Koszul dual operad. On the other hand, we get new methods for proving that an operad is Koszul.
Over thirty years ago, Kalai proved a beautiful $d$-dimensional analog of Cayley's formula for the number of $n$-vertex trees. He enumerated $d$-dimensional hypertrees weighted by the squared size of their $(d-1)$-dimensional homology group. This, however, does not answer the more basic problem of unweighted enumeration of $d$-hypertrees, which is our concern here. Our main result, Theorem 1.4, significantly improves the lower bound for the number of $d$-hypertrees. In addition, we study a random $1$-out model of $d$-complexes where every $(d-1)$-dimensional face selects a random $d$-face cont…
We describe some open problems related to homology representations of subposets of the partition lattice, beginning with questions first raised in Stanley's work on group actions on posets.
We define a homology theory for a certain class of posets equipped with a representation. We show that when restricted to Boolean lattices this homology is isomorphic to the homology of the "cube" complex defined by Khovanov.
We introduce and study additive posets. We show that the top homology group (with coefficients in Z/2Z) of a finite dimensional CW-complex carries a structure of an additive poset invariant under subdivisions. Applications to CW-complexes and graphs are discussed.
We prove analogues for sub-posets of the Dowling lattices of the results of Calderbank, Hanlon, and Robinson on homology of sub-posets of the partition lattices. The technical tool used is the wreath product analogue of the tensor species of Joyal.
We classify flag complexes on at most 12 vertices with torsion in the first homology group. The result is moderately computer-aided. As a consequence we confirm a folklore conjecture that the smallest poset whose order complex is homotopy equivalent to the real projective plane (and also the smallest poset with torsion in the first homology group) has exactly 13 elements.
We extend the existing idea of "cellular poset", introduce a collection of "cellular methods" for the computation of homology of intersection lattice of a complicated subspace arrangement, and for the computation of multiplicative structure induced by intersection. As an application, we give a presentation of cohomology ring of orbit configuration space of standard action by cellular methods and a spectral sequence associated with Grothendieck fibration of poset.
We investigate the (co)homological properties of two classes of Lie algebras that are constructed from any finite poset: the solvable class $\frak{gl}^\preceq$ and the nilpotent class $\frak{gl}^\prec$. We confirm the conjecture of Jollenbeck that says: every prime power $p^r\!\leq\!n\!-\!2$ appears as torsion in $H_\ast(\frak{nil}_n;\mathbb{Z})$, and every prime power $p^r\!\leq\!n\!-\!1$ appears as torsion in $H_\ast(\frak{sol}_n;\mathbb{Z})$. If $\preceq$ is a bounded poset, then the (co)homology of $\frak{gl}^\preceq$ is \emph{torsion-convex}, i.e. if it contains $p$-torsion, then it also …
The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_n$ acts naturally on the poset of injective words over the alphabet $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$. The induced representation on the homology of this poset has been computed by Reiner and Webb. We generalize their result by computing the representation of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the homology of all rank-selected subposets, in the sense of Stanley. A further generalization to the poset of $r$-colored injective words is given.
The notion of Rees product of posets was introduced by Björner and Welker, where they study connections between poset topology and commutative algebra. Björner and Welker conjectured and Jonsson proved that the dimension of the top homology of the Rees product of the truncated Boolean algebra $B_n \setminus \{0\}$ and the $n$-chain $C_n$ is equal to the number of derangements in the symmetric group $\mathfrak S_n$. Here we prove a refinement of this result, which involves the Eulerian numbers, and a $q$-analog of both the refinement and the original conjecture, which comes from replacing the B…
The homological information about a filtered simplicial complex over the poset of positive real numbers is often presented by a barcode which depicts the evolution of the associated Betti numbers. However, there is a wonderfully complex combinatorics associated with the homology classes of a filtered complex, and one can do more than just counting them over the index poset. Here, we show that this combinatorial information can be encoded by filtered matroids, or even better, by rooted forests. We also show that these rooted forests can be realized as cobordisms.
Hepworth, Willerton, Leinster and Shulman introduced the magnitude homology groups for enriched categories, in particular, for metric spaces. The purpose of this paper is to describe the magnitude homology group of a metric space in terms of order complexes of posets. In a metric space, an interval (the set of points between two chosen points) has a natural poset structure, which is called the interval poset. Under additional assumptions on sizes of $4$-cuts, we show that the magnitude chain complex can be constructed using tensor products, direct sums and degree shifts from order complexes of…
We consider the poset of weighted partitions $Π_n^w$, introduced by Dotsenko and Khoroshkin in their study of a certain pair of dual operads. The maximal intervals of $Π_n^w$ provide a generalization of the lattice $Π_n$ of partitions, which we show possesses many of the well-known properties of $Π_n$. In particular, we prove these intervals are EL-shellable, we show that the Möbius invariant of each maximal interval is given up to sign by the number of rooted trees on on node set $\{1,2,\dots,n\}$ having a fixed number of descents, we find combinatorial bases for homology and cohomology, and …
For each composition $\vec{c}$ we show that the order complex of the poset of pointed set partitions $Π^{\bullet}_{\vec{c}}$ is a wedge of spheres of the same dimension with the multiplicity given by the number of permutations with descent composition $\vec{c}$. Furthermore, the action of the symmetric group on the top homology is isomorphic to the Specht module $S^{B}$ where $B$ is a border strip associated to the composition. We also study the filter of pointed set partitions generated by a knapsack integer partition and show the analogous results on homotopy type and action on the top homol…
We develop a new method to compute the homology groups of finite topological spaces (or equivalently of finite partially ordered sets) by means of spectral sequences giving a complete and simple description of the corresponding differentials. Our method proves to be powerful and involves far fewer computations than the standard one. We derive many applications of our technique which include a generalization of Hurewicz theorem for regular CW-complexes, results in homological Morse theory and formulas to compute the Möbius function of posets.
Let $X$ be 2n-dimensional compact manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus. The orbit space $X/T$ is a manifold with corners. Suppose that all proper faces of $X/T$ are acyclic. In the paper we study the homological spectral sequence $E^*_{*,*}\Rightarrow H_*(X)$ corresponding to the filtration of $X$ by orbit types. When the free part of the action is not twisted, we describe the whole spectral sequence in terms of homology and combinatorial structure of $X/T$. In this case we describe the kernel and the cokernel of the natural map $k[X/T]/(l.s.o.p.) \to H_*(X)$, where $k[X/…
This paper studies the poset of eigenspaces of elements of an imprimitive unitary reflection group, for a fixed eigenvalue, ordered by the reverse of inclusion. The study of this poset is suggested by the eigenspace theory of Springer and Lehrer. The posets are shown to be isomorphic to certain subposets of Dowling lattices (the `d-divisible, k-evenly coloured Dowling lattices'). This enables us to prove that these posets are Cohen-Macaulay, and to determine the dimension of their top homology.
Using the tools of algebraic Morse theory, and the thin poset approach to constructing homology theories, we give a categorification of Whitney's broken circuit theorem for the chromatic polynomial, and for Stanley's chromatic symmetric function.
We give a combinatorial expansion of a Schubert homology class in the affine Grassmannian Gr_{SL_k} into Schubert homology classes in Gr_{SL_{k+1}}. This is achieved by studying the combinatorics of a new class of partitions called k-shapes, which interpolates between k-cores and k+1-cores. We define a symmetric function for each k-shape, and show that they expand positively in terms of dual k-Schur functions. We obtain an explicit combinatorial description of the expansion of an ungraded k-Schur function into k+1-Schur functions. As a corollary, we give a formula for the Schur expansion of an…
Let $P$ be a finite poset. We will show that for any reasonable $P$-persistent object $X$ in the category of finite topological spaces, there is a $P-$ weighted graph, whose clique complex has the same $P$-persistent homology as $X$.
An affine monoid is an additive monoid which is cancellative, pointed and finitely generated. An affine monoid $Λ$ has the partial order defined by $λ\le λ+ μ$. The Frobenius complex is the order complex of an open interval of $Λ$ with respect to this partial order. The reduced homology of the Frobenius complex is related to the torsion group of the monoid algebra $K[Λ]$. In this paper, we pay attention to homotopy types of Frobenius complexes, and we express the homotopy types of the Frobenius complexes of $Λ$ in terms of those of $Λ_1$ and $Λ_2$ when $Λ$ is an affine monoid obtained by gluin…
The lattice of intersections of reflecting hyperplanes of a complex reflection group W may be considered as the poset of 1-eigenspaces of the elements of W. In this paper we replace 1 with an arbitrary eigenvalue and study the topology and homology representation of the resulting poset. After posing the main question of whether this poset is shellable, we show that all its upper intervals are geometric lattices, and then answer the question in the affirmative for the infinite family G(m,p,n) of complex reflection groups, and the first 31 of the 34 exceptional groups, by constructing CL-shellin…
The commutative and homological algebra of modules over posets is developed, as closely parallel as possible to the algebra of finitely generated modules over noetherian commutative rings, in the direction of finite presentations, primary decompositions, and resolutions. Interpreting this finiteness in the language of derived categories of subanalytically constructible sheaves proves two conjectures due to Kashiwara and Schapira concerning sheaves with microsupport in a given cone. The motivating case is persistent homology of arbitrary filtered topological spaces, especially the case of multi…
In this paper we expand the theory of weighted sheaves over posets, and use it to study the local homology of Artin groups. First, we use such theory to relate the homology of classical braid groups with the homology of certain independence complexes of graphs. Then, in the context of discrete Morse theory on weighted sheaves, we introduce a particular class of acyclic matchings. Explicit formulas for the homology of the corresponding Morse complexes are given, in terms of the ranks of the associated incidence matrices. We use such method to perform explicit computations for the new affine cas…
We prove a number of new restrictions on the enumerative properties of homology manifolds and semi-Eulerian complexes and posets. These include a determination of the affine span of the fine $h$-vector of balanced semi-Eulerian complexes and the toric $h$-vector of semi-Eulerian posets. The lower bounds on simplicial homology manifolds, when combined with higher dimensional analogues of Walkup's 3-dimensional constructions \cite{Wal}, allow us to give a complete characterization of the $f$-vectors of arbitrary simplicial triangulations of $S^1 \times S^3, \C P^2,$ $ K3$ surfaces, and $(S^2 \ti…
In 1980, Edelman defined a poset on objects called the noncrossing 2-partitions. They are closely related with noncrossing partitions and parking functions. To some extent, his definition is a precursor of the parking space theory, in the framework of finite reflection groups. We present some enumerative and topological properties of this poset. In particular, we get a formula counting certain chains, that encompasses formulas for Whitney numbers (of both kinds). We prove shellability of the poset, and compute its homology as a representation of the symmetric group. We moreover link it with tw…
A theory of modules over posets is developed to define computationally feasible, topologically interpretable data structures, in terms of birth and death of homology classes, for persistent homology with multiple real parameters. To replace the noetherian hypothesis in the general setting of modules over posets, a "finitely encoded" condition is defined combinatorially and developed algebraically. It captures topological tameness of persistent homology. Poset-modules satisfying it can be specified by "fringe presentations" that reflect birth-and-death descriptions of persistence. A syzygy theo…
Let $X$ be a $2n$-manifold with a locally standard action of a compact torus $T^n$. If the free part of action is trivial and proper faces of the orbit space $Q$ are acyclic, then there are three types of homology classes in $X$: (1) classes of face submanifolds; (2) $k$-dimensional classes of $Q$ swept by actions of subtori of dimensions $<k$; (3) relative $k$-classes of $Q$ modulo $\partial Q$ swept by actions of subtori of dimensions $\geqslant k$. The submodule of $H_*(X)$ spanned by face classes is an ideal in $H_*(X)$ with respect to the intersection product. It is isomorphic to $(\mathb…
The purpose of this paper is twofold. 1. We give combinatorial bounds on the ranks of the groups $\Tor^{R}_\bullet(k,k)_\bullet$ in the case where $R = k[Λ]$ is an affine semi-group ring, and in the process provide combinatorial proofs for bounds by Eisenbud, Reeves and Totaro on which Tor groups vanish. In addition, we show that if the bounds hold for a field $k$ then they hold for $\field[Λ]$ and any field $\field$. Moreover, we provide a combinatorial construction for a free resolution of $\field$ over $\field[Λ]$ which achieves these bounds. 2. We extend the lexicographic discrete Morse fu…
Given a filter $Δ$ in the poset of compositions of $n$, we form the filter $Π^{*}_Δ$ in the partition lattice. We determine all the reduced homology groups of the order complex of $Π^{*}_Δ$ as ${\mathfrak S}_{n-1}$-modules in terms of the reduced homology groups of the simplicial complex $Δ$ and in terms of Specht modules of border shapes. We also obtain the homotopy type of this order complex. These results generalize work of Calderbank--Hanlon--Robinson and Wachs on the $d$-divisible partition lattice. Our main theorem applies to a plethora of examples, including filters associated to intege…
In this paper we study the problem of determining the homology groups of a quotient of a topological space by an action of a group. The method is to represent the original topological space as a homotopy limit of a diagram, and then act with the group on that diagram. Once it is possible to understand what the action of the group on every space in the diagram is, and what it does to the morphisms, we can compute the homology groups of the homotopy limit of this quotient diagram. Our motivating example is the symmetric deleted join of a simplicial complex. It can be represented as a diagram of …
