We use the inverse scattering transform and a diffusion approximation limit theorem to study the stability of soliton components of the solution of the nonlinear Schrödinger and Korteweg-de Vries equations under random perturbations of the initial conditions: for a wide class of rapidly oscillating random perturbations this problem reduces to the study of a canonical system of stochastic differential equations which depends only on the integrated covariance of the perturbation. We finally study the problem when the perturbation is weak, which allows us to analyze the stability of solitons quantitatively.
In this article we study the homogenization rates of eigenvalues of a Steklov problem with rapidly oscillating periodic weight functions. The results are obtained via a careful study of oscillating functions on the boundary and a precise estimate of the $L^\infty$ bound of eigenfunctions. As an application we provide some estimates on the first nontrivial curve of the Dancer-{F}u{č}{\'ı}k spectrum.
In this paper, for a family of second-order elliptic equations with rapidly oscillating periodic coefficients and rapidly oscillating periodic potentials, we are interested in the $H^1$ convergence rates and the Dirichlet eigenvalues and bounds of the normal derivatives of Dirichlet eigenfunctions. The $H^1$ convergence rates rely on the Dirichlet correctors and the first-order corrector for the oscillating potentials. And the bound results rely on an $O(\varepsilon)$ estimate in $H^1$ for solutions with Dirichlet condition.
The paper is devoted to the development of the theory of inverse problems for evolution equations with terms rapidly oscillating in time. A new approach to setting such problems is developed for the case in which additional constraints are imposed only on several first terms of the asymptotics of the solution rather that on the whole solution. This approach is realized in the case of a multidimensional hyperbolic equation with unknown absolute term.
In the present paper, we consider second order strictly hyperbolic linear operators of the form $Lu\,=\,\partial_t^2u\,-\,{\rm div}\big(A(t,x)\nabla u\big)$, for $(t,x)\in[0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^n$. We assume the coefficients of the matrix $A(t,x)$ to be smooth in time on $\,]0,T]\times\mathbb{R}^n$, but rapidly oscillating when $t\to 0^+$; they match instead minimal regularity assumptions (either Lipschitz or log-Lipschitz regularity conditions) with respect to the space variable. Correspondingly, we prove well-posedness results for the Cauchy problem related to $L$, either with no loss of deri…
In this paper we continue the study of critical sets of solutions $u_\e$ of second-order elliptic equations in divergence form with rapidly oscillating and periodic coefficients. In \cite{Lin-Shen-3d}, by controling the "turning" of approximate tangent planes, we show that the $(d-2)$-dimensional Hausdorff measures of the critical sets are bounded uniformly with respect to the period $\e$, provided that doubling indices for solutions are bounded. In this paper we use a different approach, based on the reduction of the doubling indices of $u_\e$, to study the two-dimensional case. The proof rel…
We introduce a new iterative method for computing solutions of elliptic equations with random rapidly oscillating coefficients. Similarly to a multigrid method, each step of the iteration involves different computations meant to address different length scales. However, we use here the homogenized equation on all scales larger than a fixed multiple of the scale of oscillation of the coefficients. While the performance of standard multigrid methods degrades rapidly under the regime of large scale separation that we consider here, we show an explicit estimate on the contraction factor of our met…
We analyse a system of partial differential equations describing the behaviour of an elastic plate with periodic moduli in the two planar directions, in the asymptotic regime when the period and the plate thickness are of the same order of smallness. Assuming that the displacement gradients of the points of the plate are small enough for the equations of linearised elasticity to be a suitable approximation of the material response, such as the case in e.g. acoustic wave propagation, we derive a class of "hybrid", homogenisation dimension-reduction, norm-resolvent estimates for the plate, under…
The paper deals with homogenization of Levy-type operators with rapidly oscillating coefficients. We consider cases of periodic and random statistically homogeneous micro-structures and show that in the limit we obtain a Levy-operator. In the periodic case we study both symmetric and non-symmetric kernels whereas in the random case we only investigate symmetric kernels. We also address a nonlinear version of this homogenization problem.
We study the 2D full Ginzburg-Landau energy with a periodic rapidly oscillating, discontinuous and [strongly] diluted pinning term using a perturbative argument. This energy models the state of an heterogeneous type II supercon-ductor submitted to a magnetic field. We calculate the value of the first critical field which links the presence of vorticity defects with the intensity of the applied magnetic field. Then we prove a standard dependance of the quantized vorticity defects with the intensity of the applied field. Our study includes the case of a London solution having several minima. The…
The finite time blow-up of solutions for 1-D NLS with oscillating nonlinearities is shown in two domains: (1) the whole real line where the nonlinear source is acting in the interior of the domain and (2) the right half-line where the nonlinear source is placed at the boundary point. The distinctive feature of this work is that the the initial energy is allowed to be non-negative and the momentum is allowed to be infinite in contrast to the previous literature on the blow-up of solutions with time dependent nonlinearities. The common finite momentum assumption is removed by using a compactly s…
