In this paper, the averaging principle for quasi-geostrophic motions with rapidly oscillating forcing is proved, both on finite but large time intervals and on the entire time axis. This includes comparison estimate, stability estimate, and convergence result between quasi-geostrophic motions and its averaged motions. Furthermore, the existence of almost periodic quasi-geostrophic motions and attractor convergence are also investigated.
We consider the 2D quasi-geostrophic equation with supercritical dissipation and dispersive forcing in the whole space. When the dispersive amplitude parameter is large enough, we prove the global well-posedness of strong solution to the equation with large initial data. We also show the strong convergence result as the amplitude parameter goes to $\infty$. Both results rely on the Strichartz-type estimates for the corresponding linear equation.
We consider the initial value problem for the 2D quasi-geostrophic equation with weak dissipation term $κ(-Δ)^{α/2}θ (0<α\leqslant 1)$ and dispersive forcing term $Au_2$. We establish a unique global solution for a given initial data $θ_0$ which belongs to the scaling subcritical Sobolev space $H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)\ (s>2-α)$ if the size of dispersion parameter is sufficiently large. This phenomenon is so-called the global regularity. We also obtain the relationship between the initial data and the dispersion parameter, which ensures the existence of the global solution. Moreover, we show the glob…
We consider surface quasi-geostrophic equation with dispersive forcing and critical dissipation. We prove global existence of smooth solutions given sufficiently smooth initial data. This is done using a maximum principle for the solutions involving conservation of a certain family of moduli of continuity.
We consider the asymptotic behavior of the surface quasi-geostrophic equation, subject to a small external force. Under suitable assumptions on the forcing, we first construct the steady states and we provide a number of useful a posteriori estimates for them. Importantly, to do so, we only impose minimal cancellation conditions on the forcing function. Our main result is that all $L^1\cap L^\infty$ localized initial data produces global solutions of the forced SQG, which converge to the steady states in $L^p(\mathbf R^2), 1<p\leq 2$ as time goes to infinity. This establishes that the steady s…
In this paper we study the time evolution of a temperature patch in $R^2$ according to the modified Surface Quasi-Geostrophic Equation (SQG) patch equation. In particular we give a temporal estimate on the growth of the support, providing a rigorous proof of the confinement of a hot patch of temperature in absence of external forcing, under the quasi-geostrophic approximation.
We consider the evolution by crystalline curvature of a planar set in a stratified medium, modeled by a periodic forcing term. We characterize the limit evolution law as the period of the oscillations tends to zero. Even if the model is very simple, the limit evolution problem is quite rich, and we discuss some properties such as uniqueness, comparison principle and pinning/depinning phenomena.
This paper is devoted to provide a theoretical underpinning for ensemble forecasting with rapid fluctuations in body forcing and in boundary conditions. Ensemble averaging principles are proved under suitable `mixing' conditions on random boundary conditions and on random body forcing. The ensemble averaged model is a nonlinear stochastic partial differential equation, with the deviation process (i.e., the approximation error process) quantified as the solution of a linear stochastic partial differential equation.
We describe a topological method to study the dynamics of dissipative PDEs on a torus with rapidly oscillating forcing terms. We show that a dissipative PDE, which is invariant with respect to Galilean transformations, with a large average initial velocity can be reduced to a problem with rapidly oscillating forcing terms. We apply the technique to the Burgers equation, and the incompressible 2D Navier-Stokes equations with a time-dependent forcing. We prove that for a large initial average speed the equation admits a bounded eternal solution, which attracts all other solutions forward in time…
We show that, under reasonably mild hypotheses, the solution of the forced--dissipative rotating primitive equations of the ocean loses most of its fast, inertia--gravity, component in the small Rossby number limit as $t\to\infty$. At leading order, the solution approaches what is known as "geostrophic balance" even under ageostrophic, slowly time-dependent forcing. Higher-order results can be obtained if one further assumes that the forcing is time-independent and sufficiently smooth. If the forcing lies in some Gevrey space, the solution will be exponentially close to a finite-dimensional "s…
We consider quasi-geostrophic (Q-G) models in two- and three-layers that are useful in theoretical studies of planetary atmospheres and oceans. In these models, the streamfunctions are given by (1+2) partial differen- tial systems of evolution equations. A two-layer Q-G model, in a simpli- fied version, is dependent exclusively on the Rossby radius of deformation. However, the f-plane Q-G point vortex model contains factors such as the density, thickness of each layer, the Coriolis parameter, and the constant of gravitational acceleration, and this two-layered model admits a lesser number of L…
The ocean thermohaline circulation, also called meridional overturning circulation, is caused by water density contrasts. This circulation has large capacity of carrying heat around the globe and it thus affects the energy budget and further affects the climate. We consider a thermohaline circulation model in the meridional plane under external wind forcing. We show that, when there is no wind forcing, the stream function and the density fluctuation (under appropriate metrics) tend to zero exponentially fast as time goes to infinity. With rapidly oscillating wind forcing, we obtain an averagin…
The quasi-geostrophic equation or the Euler equation with dissipation studied in the present paper is a simplified form of the atmospheric circulation model introduced by Charney and DeVore [J. Atmos. Sci. 36(1979), 1205-1216] on the existence of multiple steady states to the understanding of the persistence of atmospheric blocking. The fluid motion defined by the equation is driven by a zonal thermal forcing and an Ekman friction forcing measured by $κ>0$. It is proved that the steady-state solution is unique for $κ>1$ while multiple steady-state solutions exist for $κ<κ_{crit}$ with respect …

For Burgers equations with real data and complex forcing terms, Lerner, Morimoto and Xu [{\it Instability of the Cauchy-Kovalevskaya solution for a class of non-linear systems}, Amer.~J.~Math.~2010] proved that only analytical data generate local $C^2$ solutions. The corresponding instabilities are however not observed numerically; rather, numerical simulations show an exponential growth only after a delay in time. We argue that numerical diffusion is responsible for this time delay, as we prove that for Burgers equations in the torus with small viscosity and a complex forcing, oscillating dat…
