We use the inverse scattering method to construct classical solutions for the Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation, solving a problem posed by Lassas, Mueller, Siltanen, and Stahel. We exploit Bogadanov's Miura-type map which transforms solutions of the modified Novikov-Veselov (mNV) equation into solutions of the NV equation. We show that the Cauchy data of conductivity type considered by Lassas, Mueller, Siltanen, and Stahel correspond precisely to the range of the Miura map, so that it suffices to study the mNV equation. We solve the mNV equation using the scattering transform associated to the defocussing Davey-Stewartson II equation.
In this paper we study the Novikov-Veselov equation and the related modified Novikov-Veselov equation in certain Sobolev spaces. We prove local well-posedness in H^s (R2) for s > 1/2 for the Novikov-Veselov equation, and local well-posedness in H^s (R2) for s > 1 for the modified Novikov-Veselov equation. Finally we point out some ill-posedness issues for the Novikov- Veselov equation in the supercritical regime.
We prove that the Novikov-Veselov equation (an analog of KdV in dimension 2 + 1) at zero energy does not have sufficiently localized soliton solutions of conductivity type.
We demonstrate that the Novikov.Veselov equation (a (2+1)-dimensional analog of KdV) at zero energy does not possess solitons with the space localization stronger than O(|x|^{-4}).
In this note we show that the Novikov-Veselov equation at positive energy (an analog of KdV in 2+1 dimensions) has no exponentially localized solitons ( in the two-dimensional sense).
We show that the Novikov--Veselov equation (an analog of KdV in dimension 2 + 1) at positive and negative energies does not have solitons with the space localization stronger than O(|x|^{-3}) as |x| \to \infty.
Recent progress in the theory and computation for the Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation is reviewed with initial potentials decaying at infinity, focusing mainly on the zero-energy case. The inverse scattering method for the zero-energy NV equation is presented in the context of Manakov triples, treating initial data of conductivity type rigorously. Special closed-form solutions are presented, including multisolitons, ring solitons, and breathers. The computational inverse scattering method is used to study zero-energy exceptional points and the relationship between supercritical, critical, and su…
We present an explicit example of a fast decaying solution to the modified Novikov--Veselov equation with a one-point singularity in the space-time. It is constructed by using the geometrical interpretation of the Moutard transformation of solutions to this equation and the Enneper minimal surface.
We begin by introducing a new procedure for construction of the exact solutions to Cauchy problem of the real-valued (hyperbolic) Novikov-Veselov equation. The procedure shown therein utilizes the well-known Airy function $\text{Ai}(ξ)$ which in turn serves as a solution to the ordinary differential equation $\frac{d^2 z}{d ξ^2} = ξz$. In the second part of the article we show that the aforementioned procedure can also work for the $n$-th order generalizations of the Novikov-Veselov equation, provided that one replaces the Airy function with the appropriate solution of the ordinary differentia…
A construction of blowing up solutions to the modified Novikov-Veselov equation is proposed. It is based on the Moutard transformation of two-dimensional Dirac operators and its geometrical interpretation via surface geometry. An explicit example of such a solution constructed by using the Enneper minimal surface is discussed in detail. This example was briefly announced in arXiv:1408.4723.
The initial value problem $u(x,y,0)=u_0(x,y)$ for the Novikov-Veselov equation $$\partial_tu+(\partial ^3 + \overline{\partial}^3)u +3(\partial (u\overline{\partial}^{-1}\partial u)+\overline{\partial}(u\partial^{-1}\overline{\partial}u))=0$$ is investigated by the Fourier restriction norm method. Local well-posedness is shown in the nonperiodic case for $u_0 \in H^s(\mathbb{R}^2)$ with $s > - \frac{3}{4}$ and in the periodic case for data $u_0 \in H^s_0(\mathbb{T}^2)$ with mean zero, where $s > - \frac{1}{5}$. Both results rely on the structure of the nonlinearity, which becomes visible with …

In the present paper we begin studies on the large time asymptotic behavior for solutions of the Cauchy problem for the Novikov--Veselov equation (an analog of KdV in 2 + 1 dimensions) at positive energy. In addition, we are focused on a family of reflectionless (transparent) potentials parameterized by a function of two variables. In particular, we show that there are no isolated soliton type waves in the large time asymptotics for these solutions in contrast with well-known large time asymptotics for solutions of the KdV equation with reflectionless initial data.
We study numerically the evolution of perturbed Korteweg-de Vries solitons and of well localized initial data by the Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation at different levels of the "energy" parameter $ E $. We show that as $ |E| \to \infty $, NV behaves, as expected, similarly to its formal limit, the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. However at intermediate regimes, i.e. when $ | E | $ is not very large, more varied scenarios are possible, in particular, blow-ups are observed. The mechanism of the blow-up is studied.
In the present paper we are concerned with the Novikov--Veselov equation at negative energy, i.e. with the $ (2 + 1) $--dimensional analog of the KdV equation integrable by the method of inverse scattering for the two--dimensional Schrödinger equation at negative energy. We show that the solution of the Cauchy problem for this equation with non--singular scattering data behaves asymptotically as $ \frac{\const}{t^{3/4}} $ in the uniform norm at large times $ t $. We also present some arguments which indicate that this asymptotics is optimal.
Using the inverse scattering method, we construct global solutions to the Novikov-Veselov equation for real-valued decaying initial data q with the property that the associated Schrodinger operator with potential q is nonnegative. Such initial data are either critical (an arbitrarily small perturbation of the potential makes the operator nonpositive) or subcritical (sufficiently small perturbations of the potential preserve non-negativity of the operator). Previously, Lassas, Mueller, Siltanen and Stahel proved global existence for critical potentials, also called potentials of "conductivity t…
The Novikov-Veselov (NV) equation is a (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear evolution equation that generalizes the (1+1)-dimensional Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation. Solution of the NV equation using the inverse scattering method has been discussed in the literature, but only formally (or with smallness assumptions in case of nonzero energy) because of the possibility of exceptional points, or singularities in the scattering data. In this work, absence of exceptional points is proved at zero energy for evolutions with compactly supported, smooth and rotationally symmetric initial data of the conductiv…
New manifestly gauge-invariant forms of two-dimensional generalized dispersive long-wave and Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov systems of integrable nonlinear equations are presented. It is shown how in different gauges from such forms famous two-dimensional generalization of dispersive long-wave system of equations, Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov and modified Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov equations and other known and new integrable nonlinear equations arise. Miura-type transformations between nonlinear equations in different gauges are considered.
We obtain new gauge-invariant forms of two-dimensional integrable systems of nonlinear equations: the Sawada-Kotera and Kaup-Kuperschmidt system, the generalized system of dispersive long waves, and the Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov system. We show how these forms imply both new and well-known two-dimensional integrable nonlinear equations: the Sawada-Kotera equation, Kaup-Kuperschmidt equation, dispersive long-wave system, Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov equation, and modified Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov equation. We consider Miura-type transformations between nonlinear equations in different gauges.
In this article we show that the large time asymptotics for the Grinevich-Zakharov rational solutions of the Novikov-Veselov equation at positive energy (an analog of KdV in 2+1 dimensions) is given by a finite sum of localized travel waves (solitons).
The inverse scattering method for the Novikov-Veselov equation is studied for a larger class of Schrödinger potentials than could be handled previously. Previous work concerns so-called conductivity type potentials, which have a bounded positive solution at zero energy and are a nowhere dense set of potentials. We relax this assumption to include logarithmically growing positive solutions at zero energy. These potentials are stable under perturbations. Assuming only that the potential is subcritical and has two weak derivatives in a weighted Sobolev space, we prove that the associated scatteri…
We develop the Riemann-Hilbert problem approach to inverse scattering for the two-dimensional Schrodinger equation at fixed energy. We obtain global or generic versions of the key results of this approach for the case of positive energy and compactly supported potentials. In particular, we do not assume that the potential is small or that Faddeev scattering solutions do not have singularities (i.e. we allow the Faddeev exceptional points to exist). Applications of these results to the Novikov-Veselov equation are also considered.
