We obtain new gauge-invariant forms of two-dimensional integrable systems of nonlinear equations: the Sawada-Kotera and Kaup-Kuperschmidt system, the generalized system of dispersive long waves, and the Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov system. We show how these forms imply both new and well-known two-dimensional integrable nonlinear equations: the Sawada-Kotera equation, Kaup-Kuperschmidt equation, dispersive long-wave system, Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov equation, and modified Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov equation. We consider Miura-type transformations between nonlinear equations in different gauges.
New manifestly gauge-invariant forms of two-dimensional generalized dispersive long-wave and Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov systems of integrable nonlinear equations are presented. It is shown how in different gauges from such forms famous two-dimensional generalization of dispersive long-wave system of equations, Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov and modified Nizhnik-Veselov-Novikov equations and other known and new integrable nonlinear equations arise. Miura-type transformations between nonlinear equations in different gauges are considered.
A dispersionless integrable system underlying 2+1-dimensional hyperCR Einstein--Weyl structures is obtained as a symmetry reduction of the anti--self--dual Yang--Mills equations with the gauge group Diff$(S^1)$. Two special classes of solutions are obtained from well known soliton equations by embedding SU(1,1) in ${Diff}(S^1)$.
We study four dimensional N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory in the Omega-background with the two dimensional N=2 super-Poincare invariance. We explain how this gauge theory provides the quantization of the classical integrable system underlying the moduli space of vacua of the ordinary four dimensional N=2 theory. The epsilon-parameter of the Omega-background is identified with the Planck constant, the twisted chiral ring maps to quantum Hamiltonians, the supersymmetric vacua are identified with Bethe states of quantum integrable systems. This four dimensional gauge theory in its low energy desc…
We introduce a class of new integrable lattice models labeled by a pair of positive integers N and r. The integrable model is obtained from the Gauge/YBE correspondence, which states the equivalence of the 4d N=1 S^1 \times S^3/Z_r index of a large class of SU(N) quiver gauge theories with the partition function of 2d classical integrable spin models. The integrability of the model (star-star relation) is equivalent with the invariance of the index under the Seiberg duality. Our solution to the Yang-Baxter equation is one of the most general known in the literature, and reproduces a number of …
This is an introductory survey written in Japanese on classical integrability from the viewpoint of symmetry reduction of 4-dimensional anti-self-dual Yang-Mills equations. Twistor construction methods are discussed in detail in 4-dimension. Exact local solutions are, in this article, presented in terms of quasideterminants in a compact form. Some integrable aspects in lower-dimension are clarified in the context of the reduction. Noncommutative extension and higher-dimensional extension are briefly discussed.
We construct new integrable systems describing particles with internal spin from four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver gauge theories. The models can be quantized and solved exactly using the quantum inverse scattering method and also using the Bethe/Gauge correspondence.
Appropriate restrictions of Lax operators which allows to construction of (2+1)-dimensional integrable field systems, coming from centrally extended algebra of pseudo-differential operators, are reviewed. The gauge transformation and the reciprocal link between three classes of Lax hierarchies are established.
We study Bethe/gauge correspondence at the special locus of Coulomb moduli where the integrable system exhibits the splitting of degenerate levels. For this investigation, we consider the four-dimensional pure $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $U(N)$ gauge theory, with a half-BPS surface defect constructed with the help of an orbifold or a degenerate gauge vertex. We show that the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations imply the Schrödinger-type and the Baxter-type differential equations satisfied by the respective surface defect partition functions. At the special locus of Coulomb moduli the…
Recently, there has been observed an interesting correspondence between supersymmetric quiver gauge theories with four supercharges and integrable lattice models of statistical mechanics such that the two-dimensional spin lattice is the quiver diagram, the partition function of the lattice model is the partition function of the gauge theory and the Yang-Baxter equation expresses the identity of partition functions for dual pairs. This correspondence is a powerful tool which enables us to generate new integrable models. The aim of the present paper is to give a short account on a progress in in…
We introduce a general setting for multidimensional dispersionless integrable hierarchy in terms of differential $m$-form $Ω_m$ with the coefficients satisfying the Plücker relations, which is gauge-invariantly closed and its gauge-invariant coordinates (ratios of coefficients) are (locally) holomorphic with respect to one of the variables (the spectral variable). We demonstrate that this form defines a hierarchy of dispersionless integrable equations in terms of commuting vector fields locally holomorphic in the spectral variable. The equations of the hierarchy are given by the gauge-invarian…
A recursion operator is constructed for a new integrable system of coupled Korteweg - de Vries equations by the method of gauge-invariant description of zero-curvature representations. This second-order recursion operator is characterized by unusual structure of its nonlocal part.
We establish the isomorphism between a nonlinear $σ$-model and the abelian gauge theory on an arbitrary curved background, which allows us to derive integrable models and the corresponding Lax representations from gauge theoretical point of view. In our approach the spectral parameter is related to the global degree of freedom associated with the conformal or Galileo transformations of the spacetime. The B$\ddot{\rm a}$cklund transformations are derived from Chern-Simons theory where the spectral parameter is defined in terms of the extract compactified space dimension coordinate.
We propose an integral formulation of the equations of motion of a large class of field theories which leads in a quite natural and direct way to the construction of conservation laws. The approach is based on generalized non-abelian Stokes theorems for p-form connections, and its appropriate mathematical language is that of loop spaces. The equations of motion are written as the equality of an hyper-volume ordered integral to an hyper-surface ordered integral on the border of that hyper-volume. The approach applies to integrable field theories in (1+1) dimensions, Chern-Simons theories in (2+…
In this paper, we prove that the nonlocal complex modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation introduced by Ablowitz and Musslimani [Nonlinearity, 29, 915-946 (2016)] is gauge equivalent to a spin-like model. From the gauge equivalence, one can see that there exists significant difference between the nonlocal complex mKdV equation and the classical complex mKdV equation. Through constructing the Darboux transformation(DT) for nonlocal complex mKdV equation, a variety of exact solutions including dark soliton, W-type soliton, M-type soliton and periodic solutions are derived.
The Jackiw-Teitelboim gauge formulation of the 1+1 dimensional gravity allows us to relate different gauge fixing conditions with integrable hierarchies of evolution equations. We show that the equations for the Zweibein fields can be written as a pair of time reversed evolution equations of the reaction-diffusion type, admitting dissipative solutions. The spectral parameter for the related Lax pair appears as the constant valued spin connection associated with the $SO(1,1)$ gauge symmetry. Spontaneous breaking of the non-compact symmetry and the irreversible evolution are discussed.
We find and solve a large class of integrable dynamical systems which includes Calogero-Sutherland models and various novel generalizations thereof. In general they describe $N$ interacting particles moving on a circle and coupled to an arbitrary number, $m$, of $su(N)$ spin degrees of freedom with interactions which depend on arbitrary real parameters $x_j$, $j=1,2,...,m$. We derive these models from SU(N) Yang-Mills gauge theory coupled to non-dynamic matter and on spacetime which is a cylinder. This relation to gauge theories is used to prove integrability, to construct conservation laws, a…
We introduce an exactly integrable nonlinear model describing the dynamics of spinor solitons in space-dependent matrix gauge potentials of rather general types. The model is shown to be gauge equivalent to the integrable system of vector nonlinear Schrödinger equations known as the Manakov model. As an example we consider a self-attractive Bose-Einstein condensate with random spin-orbit coupling (SOC). If Zeeman splitting is also included, the system becomes nonintegrable. We illustrate this by considering the random walk of a soliton in a disordered SOC landscape. While at zero Zeeman splitt…
One fruitful motivating principle of much research on the family of integrable systems known as ``Toda lattices'' has been the heuristic assumption that the periodic Toda lattice in an affine Lie algebra is directly analogous to the nonperiodic Toda lattice in a finite-dimensional Lie algebra. This paper shows that the analogy is not perfect. A discrepancy arises because the natural generalization of the structure theory of finite-dimensional simple Lie algebras is not the structure theory of loop algebras but the structure theory of affine Kac-Moody algebras. In this paper we use this natural…
We study two-dimensional integrable field theories from the viewpoint of the four-dimensional Chern-Simons-type gauge theory introduced recently. The integrable field theories are realized as effective theories for the four-dimensional theory coupled with two-dimensional surface defects, and we can systematically compute their Lagrangians and the Lax operators satisfying the zero-curvature condition. Our construction includes many known integrable field theories, such as Gross-Neveu models, principal chiral models with Wess-Zumino terms and symmetric-space coset sigma models. Moreover we obtai…
A non-isospectral (2+1) dimensional integrable spin equation is investigated. It is shown that its geometrical and gauge equivalent counterparts is the (2+1) dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation introduced by Zakharov and studied recently by Strachan. Using a Hirota bilinearised form, line and curved soliton solutions are obtained. Using certain freedom (arbitrariness) in the solutions of the bilinearised equation, exponentially localized dromion-like solutions for the potential is found. Also, breaking soliton solutions (for the spin variables) of the shock wave type and algebraically l…
We suggest an approach for description of integrable cases of the Abel equations. It is based on increasing of the order of equations up to the second one and using equivalence transformations for the corresponding second-order ordinary differential equations. The problem of linearizability of the equations under consideration is discussed.
Motivated by the notion of Lagrangian multiforms, which provide a Lagrangian formulation of integrability, and by results of the authors on the role of covariant Hamiltonian formalism for integrable field theories, we propose the notion of Hamiltonian multiforms for integrable $1+1$-dimensional field theories. They provide the Hamiltonian counterpart of Lagrangian multiforms and encapsulate in a single object an arbitrary number of flows within an integrable hierarchy. For a given hierarchy, taking a Lagrangian multiform as starting point, we provide a systematic construction of a Hamiltonian …
In this work we establish that the Inozemtsev system is the Seiberg-Witten integrable system encoding the Coulomb branch physics of 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ USp(2N) gauge theory with four fundamental and (for $N \geq 2$) one antisymmetric tensor hypermultiplets. We describe the transformation from the spectral curves and canonical one-form of the Inozemtsev system in the $N=1$ and $N=2$ cases to the Seiberg-Witten curves and differentials explicitly, along with the explicit matching of the modulus of the elliptic curve of spectral parameters to the gauge coupling of the field theory, and of the coup…
We associate bicomplexes with several integrable models in such a way that conserved currents are obtained by a simple iterative construction. Gauge transformations and dressings are discussed in this framework and several examples are presented, including the nonlinear Schrodinger and sine-Gordon equations, and some discrete models.
Basic notions regarding classical integrable systems are reviewed. An algebraic description of the classical integrable models together with the zero curvature condition description is presented. The classical r-matrix approach for discrete and continuum classical integrable models is introduced. Using this framework the associated classical integrals of motion and the corresponding Lax pair are extracted based on algebraic considerations. Our attention is restricted to classical discrete and continuum integrable systems with periodic boundary conditions. Typical examples of discrete (Toda cha…
We study the connection between N = 2 supersymmetric gauge theories, quantum cohomology and quantum integrable systems of hydrodynamic type. We consider gauge theories on ALE spaces of A and D-type and discuss how they describe the quantum cohomology of the corresponding Nakajima's quiver varieties. We also discuss how the exact evaluation of local BPS observables in the gauge theory can be used to calculate the spectrum of quantum Hamiltonians of spin Calogero integrable systems and spin Intermediate Long Wave hydrodynamics. This is explicitly obtained by a Bethe Ansatz Equation provided by t…
We present results for the large-$N$ limit of the (1+1)-dimensional principal chiral sigma model. This is an asymptotically-free $N\times N$ matrix-valued field with massive excitations. All the form factors and the exact correlation functions of the Noether-current operator and the energy-momentum tensor are found, from Smirnov's form-factor axioms. We consider (2+1)-dimensional $SU(\infty)$ Yang-Mills theory as an array of principal chiral models with a current-current interaction. We discuss how to use our new form factors to calculate physical quantities in this gauge theory.
Yang-Mills gauge theory models on a cylinder coupled to external matter charges provide powerful means to find and solve certain non-linear integrable systems. We show that, depending on the choice of gauge group and matter charges, such a Yang-Mills model is equivalent to trigonometric Calogero-Moser systems and certain known spin generalizations thereof. Choosing a more general ansatz for the matter charges allows us to obtain and solve novel integrable systems. The key property we use to prove integrability and to solve these systems is gauge invariance of the corresponding Yang-Mills model…
We consider several integrable systems from a standpoint of the SL(2,R) invariant gauge theory. In the Drinfeld-Sokorov gauge, we get a one parameter family of nonlinear equations from zero curvature conditions. For each value of the parameter the equation is described by weak Lax equations. It is transformed to a set of coupled equations which pass the Painlevé test and are integrable for any integer values of the parameter. Performing successive gauge transformations (the Miura transformations) on the system of equations we obtain a series of nonlinear equations.
An alternative Lagrangian definition of an integrable defect is provided and analyzed. The new approach is sufficiently broad to allow a description of defects within the Tzitzeica model, which was not possible in previous approaches, and may be generalizable. New, two-parameter, sine-Gordon defects are also described, which have characteristics resembling a pair of 'fused' defects of a previously considered type. The relationship between these defects and Backlund transformations is described and a Hamiltonian description of integrable defects is proposed.
This work has its origins in an attempt to describe systematically the integrable geometries and gauge theories in dimensions one to four related to twistor theory. In each such dimension, there is a nondegenerate integrable geometric structure, governed by a nonlinear integrable differential equation, and each solution of this equation determines a background geometry on which, for any Lie group $G$, an integrable gauge theory is defined. In four dimensions, the geometry is selfdual conformal geometry and the gauge theory is selfdual Yang-Mills theory, while the lower-dimensional structures a…
We consider some nonlinear models describing interactions of long and short (LS) waves. Such LS models have been derived and proposed with various motivations, which mainly come from fluid and plasma physics. In this paper, we study some of integrable LS models, namely, the Yajima-Oikawa equation, the Newell equation, the Ma equation, the Geng-Li equation and etc. In particular, the gauge equivalent counterparts of these integrable LS models (equations) are found. In fact, these gauge equivalents of the LS equations are integrable generalized Heisenberg ferromagnet equations (HFE) with self-co…
We introduce a series of articles reviewing various aspects of integrable models relevant to the AdS/CFT correspondence. Topics covered in these reviews are: classical integrability, Yangian symmetry, factorized scattering, the Bethe ansatz, the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz, and integrable structures in (conformal) quantum field theory. In the present article we highlight how these concepts have found application in AdS/CFT, and provide a brief overview of the material contained in this series.
We present a tropical geometric description of a piecewise linear map whose invariant curve is a concave polygon. In contrast to convex polygons, a concave one is not directly related to tropical geometry; nevertheless the description is given in terms of the addition formula of a tropical elliptic curve. We show that the map is arising from a pair of tropical elliptic pencils each member of which is the invariant curve of the ultradiscrete QRT map.
We prove that the description of pencils of compatible (N x N)-metrics of constant Riemannian curvature is equivalent to a special class of integrable N-parametric deformations of quasi-Frobenius (in general, noncommutative) algebras.
A deformed differential calculus is developed based on an associative star-product. In two dimensions the Hamiltonian vector fields model the algebra of pseudo-differential operator, as used in the theory of integrable systems. Thus one obtains a geometric description of the operators. A dual theory is also possible, based on a deformation of differential forms. This calculus is applied to a number of multidimensional integrable systems, such as the KP hierarchy, thus obtaining a geometrical description of these systems. The limit in which the deformation disappears corresponds to taking the d…
This work consist of two interrelated parts. First, we derive massive gauge-invariant generalizations of geometric actions on coadjoint orbits of arbitrary (infinite-dimensional) groups $G$ with central extensions, with gauge group $H$ being certain (infinite-dimensional) subgroup of $G$. We show that there exist generalized ``zero-curvature'' representation of the pertinent equations of motion on the coadjoint orbit. Second, in the special case of $G$ being Kac-Moody group the equations of motion of the underlying gauged WZNW geometric action are identified as additional-symmetry flows of gen…
This thesis extends a previously found relation between the integrable KdV hierarchy and the boundary dynamics of pure gravity on AdS$_3$ described in the highest weight gauge, to a more general class of integrable systems associated to three-dimensional gravity on AdS$_3$ and higher spin gravity with gauge group $SL(N,\mathbb{R})\times SL(N,\mathbb{R})$ in the diagonal gauge. We present new sets of boundary conditions for the (higher spin) gravitational theories on AdS$_3$, where the dynamics of the boundary degrees of freedom is described by two independent left and right members of a hierar…
Motivated by the realisation of Yang-Baxter equation of 2d Integrable models in the 4d gauge theory of Costello-Witten-Yamazaki (CWY), we study the embedding of integrable 2d Toda field models inside this construction. This is done by using the Lax formulation of 2d integrable systems and by thinking of the standard Lax pair $L_{\pm }$ in terms of components of CWY gauge connection propagating along particular directions in the gauge bundle. We also use results of the CWY theory to build quantum line operators for 2d Toda models and compute the one loop contribution of two intersecting lines e…
In the present paper, we investigate some geometrical properties of the Camass-Holm equation (CHE). We establish the geometrical equivalence between the CHE and the M-CIV equation using a link with the motion of curves. We also show that these two equations are gauge equivalent each to other.
In the present paper, we study the integrable 2-layer generalized Heisenberg ferromagnet equation (HFE). The relation between this generalized HFE and differential geometry of curves is established. Using this relation we found the geometrical equivalent counterpart of the 2-layer spin system which is the 2-component KdV equation. Finally, the gauge equivalence between these equations is established.
We propose a nonlinear $σ$-model in a curved space as a general integrable elliptic model. We construct its exact solutions and obtain energy estimates near the critical point. We consider the Pohlmeyer transformation in Euclidean space and investigate the gauge equivalence conditions for a broad class of elliptic equations. We develop the inverse scattering transform method for the $\sinh$-Gordon equation and evaluate its exact and asymptotic solutions.
This paper is devoted to a description of integrable Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains associated with Dorfman Poisson brackets. Three main classes of these hydrodynamic chains are selected. Generating functions of conservation laws and commuting flows are found. Hierarchies of these Hamiltonian hydrodynamic chains are extended on negative moments and negative time variables. Corresponding three dimensional quasilinear equations of the second order are presented.
The Lax pair for a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation proposed by Chen-Lee-Liu is generalized into matrix form. This gives new types of integrable coupled derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations. By virtue of a gauge transformation, a new multi-component extension of a derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equation proposed by Kaup-Newell is also obtained.
Higher flows of the Heisenberg ferromagnet equation and the Wadati-Konno-Ichikawa equation are generalized into multi-component systems on the basis of the Lax formulation. It is shown that there is a correspondence between the multi-component systems through a gauge transformation. An integrable semi-discretization of the multi-component higher Heisenberg ferromagnet system is obtained.
This note gives a general construction of an integrable lattice model (and a solution of the Yang-Baxter equation with spectral parameter) from a four-dimensional field theory which is a mixture of topological and holomorphic. Spin-chain models arise in this way from a twisted, deformed version of N=1 gauge theory.

A $2n$-dimensional Lax integrable system is proposed by a set of specific spectral problems. It contains Takasaki equations, the self-dual Yang-Mills equations and its integrable hierarchy as examples. An explicit formulation of Darboux transformations is established for this Lax integrable system. The Vandermonde and generalized Cauchy determinant formulas lead to a description for deriving explicit solutions and thus some rational and analytic solutions are obtained.
