If a pair of functions nearly extremizes Young's convolution inequality for R^d, with all three exponents finite and strictly greater than 1, then each function is close in norm to a Gaussian. The proof relies on the Riesz-Sobolev rearrangement inequality and in particular, on an approximate inverse Riesz-Sobolev inequality established in a companion paper.
Those functions which nearly extremize Young's convolution inequality are characterized for discrete groups which have no nontrivial finite subgroups. Near-extremizers of the Hausdorff-Young inequality are characterized for Z^d.
The Radon transform is a bounded operator from L^p of Euclidean space R^d to L^q of the Grassmann manifold of all affine hyperplanes in R^d, for certain exponents. We identify all extremizers of the associated inequality for the endpoint case p=(d+1)/d and q=d+1.
The $k$-plane transform is a bounded operator from $\lp$ to $L^q$ of the Grassmann manifold of all affine $k$-planes in $\R^n$ for certain exponents depending on $k$ and $n$. In the endpoint case $q=n+1$, we identify all extremizers of the associated inequality for the general $k$-plane transform.
The Tomas-Stein inequality or the adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the sphere $S^1$ states that the mapping $f\mapsto \hat{fσ}$ is bounded from $L^2(S^1)$ to $L^6(\mathbb{R}^2)$. We prove that there exists an extremizer for this inequality. We also prove that any extremizer satisfies $|f(-x)|=|f(x)|$ for almost every $x\in S^1$.
The adjoint Fourier restriction inequality for the sphere $S^2$ states that if $f\in\lt(S^2,σ)$ then $\widehat{fσ}\in L^4(\reals^3)$. We prove that all critical points $f$ of the functional $\norm{\widehat{fσ}}_{L^4}/\norm{f}_{\lt}$ are smooth; that any complex-valued extremizer for the inequality is a nonnegative extremizer multiplied by the character $e^{ix\cdotξ}$ for some $ξ$; and that complex-valued extremizing sequences for the inequality are precompact modulo multiplication by characters.
The k-plane transform acting on test functions on R^d satisfies a dilation-invariant L^p to L^q inequality for some exponents p,q. We will explicit some extremizers and the value of the best constant for any value of k and d, solving the limit case of a 1997 conjecture from Baernstein and Loss. This extends their own result for k=2 and Christ's result for k=d-1.
We identify the compactness threshold for optimizing sequences of the Airy-- Strichartz inequality as an explicit multiple of the sharp constant in the Strichartz inequality. In particular, if the sharp constant in the Airy--Strichartz inequality is strictly smaller than this multiple of the sharp constant in the Strichartz inequality, then there is an optimizer for the former inequality. Our result is valid for the full range of Airy--Strichartz inequalities (except the endpoints) both in the diagonal and off-diagonal cases.
We prove that in dimensions $d \geq 3$, the non-endpoint, Lorentz-invariant $L^2 \to L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the $d$-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathbb{H}^d \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ possesses maximizers. The analogous result had been previously established in dimensions $d=1,2$ using the convolution structure of the inequality at the lower endpoint (an even integer); we obtain the generalization by using tools from bilinear restriction theory.
We give an exact formula for the Bellman function of the weak type of martingale transform. We also give the extremal functions (actually extremal sequences of functions). We find them using the precise form of the Bellman function. The extremal examples have a fractal nature as it often happens in that kind of problems. This article is devoted to the unweighted weak type estimate.
Let $d\ge 2$ and $T$ be the convolution operator $Tf(x)=\int_{\reals^{d-1}} f(x'-t,x_d-|t|^2)\,dt$, which is is bounded from $L^{(d+1)/d}(\reals^d)$ to $L^{d+1}(\reals^d)$. We show that any critical point $f\in L^{(d+1)/d}$ of the functional $\norm{Tf}_{d+1}/\norm{f}_{(d+1)/d}$ is infinitely differentiable, and that $|x|^δf\in L^{(d+1)/d}$ for some $δ>0$. In particular, this holds for all extremizers of the associated inequality. This is done by exploiting a generalized Euler-Lagrange equation, and certain weighted norm inequalities for $T$.
We find the exact Bellman function for the weak $L^1$ norm of local positive dyadic shifts. We also describe a sequence of functions, self-similar in nature, which in the limit extremize the local weak-type (1,1) inequality.
The $L^2 \to L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the $d$-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathbb{H}^d \subset \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ holds provided $6 \leq p < \infty$, if $d=1$, and $2(d+2)/d \leq p\leq 2(d+1)/(d-1)$, if $d\geq2$. Quilodrán recently found the values of the optimal constants in the endpoint cases $(d,p)\in\{(2,4),(2,6),(3,4)\}$ and showed that the inequality does not have extremizers in these cases. In this paper we answer two questions posed by Quilodrán, namely: (i) we find the explicit value of the optimal constant in the endpoint case $(d,p) = (1,6)$ (the remaining endpoint…
The Hausdorff-Young inequality for Euclidean space, in its sharp form due to Beckner, gives an upper bound for the Fourier transform in terms of Lebesgue space norms, with an optimal constant. The extremizers have been identified by Lieb to be the Gaussians. We establish an improved upper bound, for functions that nearly extremize the inequality, with a negative second term roughly proportional to the square of the distance to the set of extremizers. One formulation of this term comes with its own sharp constant. The main step is to show that any extremizing sequence is precompact, modulo the …
Let d > 1 and 0 < k < d. The k-plane transform satisies some Lp to Lq dilation-invariant inequality. In this case the best constant and the extremizers are explicitly known. We give a quantitative form of the inequality with respect to these extremizers, that works for k = d - 1 and for k < d-1 while restricted to radial functions.
We establish the existence of extremizers for a Fourier restriction inequality on planar convex arcs without points with colinear tangents whose curvature satisfies a natural assumption. More generally, we prove that any extremizing sequence of nonnegative functions has a subsequence which converges to an extremizer.
We establish the nonexistence of extremizers for a local Fourier restriction inequality on a certain class of planar convex curves whose curvature satisfies a natural assumption. We accomplish this by studying the local behavior of the triple convolution of the arclength measure on the curve with itself, and show in particular that every extremizing sequence concentrates at a point on the curve.
It is known that extremizers for the $L^2$ to $L^6$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the cone in $\mathbb{R}^3$ exist. Here we show that nonnegative extremizing sequences are precompact, after the application of symmetries of the cone. If we use the knowledge of the exact form of the extremizers, as found by Carneiro, then we can show that nonnegative extremizing sequences converge, after the application of symmetries.
We prove the existence of functions that extremize the endpoint $L^2$ to $L^4$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the one-sheeted hyperboloid in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^4$ and that, taking symmetries into consideration, any extremizing sequence has a subsequence that converges to an extremizer.
We study the problem of existence of extremizers for the $L^2$ to $L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequalities on the hyperboloid in dimensions 3 and 4, in which cases $p$ is an even integer. We will use the method developed by Foschi to show that extremizers do not exist.
We disprove a conjecture of Foschi, regarding extremizers for the Strichartz inequality with data in the Sobolev space $\dot{H}^{1/2}\times\dot{H}^{-1/2}(\mathbb R^d)$, for even $d\ge 2$. On the other hand, we provide evidence to support the conjecture in odd dimensions, and refine his sharp inequality in $\mathbb R^{1+3}$, adding a term proportional to the distance of the initial data from the set of extremizers. The proofs use the conformal compactification of the Minkowski space-time given by the Penrose transform.
The adjoint Fourier restriction inequality of Tomas and Stein states that the mapping $f\mapsto \widehat{fσ}$ is bounded from $\lt(S^2)$ to $L^4(\reals^3)$. We prove that there exist functions which extremize this inequality, and that any extremizing sequence of nonnegative functions has a subsequence which converges to an extremizer.
The Hölder-Brascamp-Lieb inequalities are a collection of multilinear inequalities generalizing a convolution inequality of Young and the Loomis-Whitney inequalities. The full range of exponents was classified in Bennett et al. (2008). In a setting similar to that of Ivanisvili and Volberg (2015), we introduce a notion of size for these inequalities which generalizes $L^p$ norms. Under this new setup, we then determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a generalized Hölder-Brascamp-Lieb type inequality to hold and establish sufficient conditions for extremizers to exist when the underlyi…
We focus on the improvements for Young inequality. We give elementary proof for known results by Dragomir, and we give remarkable notes and some comparisons. Finally, we give new inequalities which are extensions and improvements for the inequalities shown by Dragomir.
Young's integral inequality is reformulated with upper and lower bounds for the remainder. The new inequalities improve Young's integral inequality on all time scales, such that the case where equality holds becomes particularly transparent in this new presentation. The corresponding results for difference equations are given, and several examples are included. We extend these results to piecewise-monotone functions as well.
The nonlinear Hausdorff-Young inequality follows from the work of Christ and Kiselev. Later Muscalu, Tao, and Thiele asked if the constants can be chosen independently of the exponent. We show that the nonlinear Hausdorff-Young quotient admits an even better upper bound than the linear one, provided that the function is sufficiently small in the $L^1$ norm. The proof combines perturbative techniques with the sharpened version of the linear Hausdorff-Young inequality due to Christ.
Young's convolution inequality provides an upper bound for the convolution of functions in terms of $L^p$ norms. It is known that for certain groups, including Heisenberg groups, the optimal constant in this inequality is equal to that for Euclidean space of the same topological dimension, yet no extremizing functions exist. For Heisenberg groups we characterize ordered triples of functions that nearly extremize the inequality. The analysis relies on a characterization of approximate solutions of a certain class of functional equations. A result of this type is developed for a class of such eq…
Following the works of Lyons and Oberlin, Seeger, Tao, Thiele and Wright, we relate the variation of certain discrete curves on the Lie group $\text{SU}(1,1)$ to the corresponding variation of their linearized versions on the Lie algebra. Combining this with a discrete variational Menshov-Paley-Zygmund theorem, we establish a variational Hausdorff-Young inequality for a discrete version of the nonlinear Fourier transform on $\text{SU}(1,1)$.
It is known that if $q$ is an even integer then the $L^q(\mathbb{R}^d)$ norm of the Fourier transform of a superposition of translates of a fixed gaussian is monotone increasing as their centres "simultaneously slide" to the origin. We provide explicit examples to show that this monotonicity property fails dramatically if $q > 2$ is not an even integer. These results are equivalent, upon rescaling, to similar statements involving solutions to heat equations. Such considerations are natural given the celebrated theorem of Beckner concerning the gaussian extremisability of the Hausdorff--Young i…
In this paper we study an autocorrelation inequality proposed by Barnard and Steinerberger. The study of these problems is motivated by a classical problem in additive combinatorics. We establish the existence of extremizers to this inequality, for a general class of weights, including Gaussian functions (as studied by the second author and Ramos) and characteristic function (as originally studied by Barnard and Steinerberger). Moreover, via a discretization argument and numerical analysis, we find some almost optimal approximation for the best constant allowed in this inequality. We also disc…
In this short note, we give the refined Young inequality with Specht's ratio by only elementary and direct calculations. The obtained inequality is better than one previously shown by the author in 2012. In addition, we give a new property of Specht's ratio. These imply an alternative proof of the refined Young ineqaulity shown by author in 2012. We also give a remark on the relation to Kantorovich constant. Finally, we give a proposition for a corresponding general function.
Two reverse inequalities for Young's inequality were shown by M. Tominaga, using Specht ratio. In this short paper, we show alternative reverse inequalities for Young's inequality without using Specht ratio.
We prove several results about the best constants in the Hausdorff-Young inequality for noncommutative groups. In particular, we establish a sharp local central version for compact Lie groups, and extend known results for the Heisenberg group. In addition, we prove a universal lower bound to the best constant for general Lie groups.
We give some estimates of the remainder terms for several conformally-invariant Sobolev-type inequalities on the Heisenberg group, in analogy with the Euclidean case. By considering the variation of associated functionals, we give a stability of two dual forms: the fractional Sobolev (Folland-Stein) and Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev inequality, in terms of distance to the submanifold of extremizers. Then we compare their remainder terms to improve the inequalities in another way. We also compare, in the limit case s = Q (or $λ$ = 0), the remainder terms of Beckner-Onofri inequality and its dual Log…
It is shown that the Laplace transform of an Lp (1<p<=2) function defined on the positive semiaxis satisfies the Hausdorff-Young type inequality with a positive weight in the right complex half-plane if and only if the weight is a Carleson measure.
In the paper, the authors review several refinements of Young's integral inequality via several mean value theorems, such as Lagrange's and Taylor's mean value theorems of Lagrange's and Cauchy's type remainders, and via several fundamental inequalities, such as Čebyšev's integral inequality, Hermite--Hadamard's type integral inequalities, Hölder's integral inequality, and Jensen's discrete and integral inequalities, in terms of higher order derivatives and their norms, survey several applications of several refinements of Young's integral inequality, and further refine Young's integral inequa…

We give bounds on the difference between the weighted arithmetic mean and the weighted geometric mean. These imply refined Young inequalities and the reverses of the Young inequality. We also study some properties on the difference between the weighted arithmetic mean and the weighted geometric mean. Applying the newly obtained inequalities, we show some results on the Tsallis divergence, the Rényi divergence, the Jeffreys-Tsallis divergence and the Jensen-Shannon-Tsallis divergence.
In this paper, we obtain some inequalities by using a kernel and an inequality which is a result of Young inequality. Besides we give some applications to special means.
A considerable amount of literature in the theory of inequality is devoted to the study of Jensen's and Young's inequality. This article presents a number of new inequalities involving the log-convex functions and the geometrically convex functions. As their consequences, we derive the refinements for Young's inequality and Jensen's inequality. In addition, the operator Jensen's type inequality is also developed for conditioned two functions. Utilizing these new inequalities, we investigate the operator inequalities related to the relative operator entropy.
In this paper we present several applications of Cartwright-Field's inequality. Among these we found Young's inequality, Bernoulli's inequality, the inequality between the weighted power means, Hölder's inequality and Cauchy's inequality. We give also two applications related to arithmetic functions and to operator inequalities.
In this article we prove mixed inequalities for maximal operators associated to Young functions, which are an improvement of a conjecture established in \cite{Berra}. Concretely, given $r\geq 1$, $u\in A_1$, $v^r\in A_\infty$ and a Young function $Φ$ with certain properties, we have that inequality \[uv^r\left(\left\{x\in \mathbb{R}^n: \frac{M_Φ(fv)(x)}{M_Φv(x)}>t\right\}\right)\leq C\int_{\mathbb{R}^n}Φ\left(\frac{|f(x)|}{t}\right)u(x)v^r(x)\,dx\] holds for every positive $t$. The involved operator $\frac{M_Φ(fv)(x)}{M_Φv(x)}$ seems to be an adequate extension when $v^r\in A_\infty$, since wh…
For non-decreasing real functions $f$ and $g$, we consider the functional $ T(f,g ; I,J)=\int_{I} f(x)\di g(x) + \int_J g(x)\di f(x)$, where $I$ and $J$ are intervals with $J\subseteq I$. In particular case with $I=[a,t]$, $J=[a,s]$, $s\leq t$ and $g(x)=x$, this reduces to the expression in classical Young's inequality. We survey some properties of Lebesgue-Stieltjes interals and present a new simple proof for change of variables. Further, we formulate a version of Young's inequality with respect to arbitrary positive finite measure on real line including a purely discrete case, and discuss an…
We obtain several versions of the Hausdorff-Young and Hardy-Littlewood inequalities for the $(k,a)$-generalized Fourier transform recently investigated at length by Ben Saï d, Kobayashi, and Ø rsted. We also obtain a number of weighted inequalities - in particular Pitt's inequality - that have application to uncertainty principles. Specifically we obtain several analogs of the Heisenberg-Pauli-Weyl principle for $L^p$-functions, local Cowling-Price-type inequalities, Donoho-Stark-type inequalities and qualitative extensions. We finally use the Hausdorff-Young inequality as a means to obtain en…
