Let $d\ge 2$ and $T$ be the convolution operator $Tf(x)=\int_{\reals^{d-1}} f(x'-t,x_d-|t|^2)\,dt$, which is is bounded from $L^{(d+1)/d}(\reals^d)$ to $L^{d+1}(\reals^d)$. We show that any critical point $f\in L^{(d+1)/d}$ of the functional $\norm{Tf}_{d+1}/\norm{f}_{(d+1)/d}$ is infinitely differentiable, and that $|x|^δf\in L^{(d+1)/d}$ for some $δ>0$. In particular, this holds for all extremizers of the associated inequality. This is done by exploiting a generalized Euler-Lagrange equation, and certain weighted norm inequalities for $T$.
We establish the nonexistence of extremizers for a local Fourier restriction inequality on a certain class of planar convex curves whose curvature satisfies a natural assumption. We accomplish this by studying the local behavior of the triple convolution of the arclength measure on the curve with itself, and show in particular that every extremizing sequence concentrates at a point on the curve.
The operator $T$, defined by convolution with the affine arc length measure on the moment curve parametrized by $h(t)=(t,t^{2},...,t^{d})$ is a bounded operator from $L^{p}$ to $L^{q}$ if $(\frac{1}{p}, \frac{1}{q})$ lies on a line segment. In this article we prove that at non-end points there exist functions which extremize the associated inequality and any extremizing sequence is pre compact modulo the action of the symmetry of $T$. We also establish a relation between extremizers for $T$ at the end points and the extremizers of an X-ray transform restricted to directions along the moment cu…
Those functions which nearly extremize Young's convolution inequality are characterized for discrete groups which have no nontrivial finite subgroups. Near-extremizers of the Hausdorff-Young inequality are characterized for Z^d.
For an appropriate class of convex functions $ϕ$, we study the Fourier extension operator on the surface $\{(y, |y|^2+ϕ(y)):y\in\mathbb{R}^2\}$ equipped with projection measure. For the corresponding extension inequality, we compute optimal constants and prove that extremizers do not exist. The main tool is a new comparison principle for convolutions of certain singular measures that holds in all dimensions. Using tools of concentration-compactness flavor, we further investigate the behavior of general extremizing sequences. Our work is directly related to the study of extremizers and optimal …
If a pair of functions nearly extremizes Young's convolution inequality for R^d, with all three exponents finite and strictly greater than 1, then each function is close in norm to a Gaussian. The proof relies on the Riesz-Sobolev rearrangement inequality and in particular, on an approximate inverse Riesz-Sobolev inequality established in a companion paper.
We prove that in dimensions $d \geq 3$, the non-endpoint, Lorentz-invariant $L^2 \to L^p$ adjoint Fourier restriction inequality on the $d$-dimensional hyperboloid $\mathbb{H}^d \subseteq \mathbb{R}^{d+1}$ possesses maximizers. The analogous result had been previously established in dimensions $d=1,2$ using the convolution structure of the inequality at the lower endpoint (an even integer); we obtain the generalization by using tools from bilinear restriction theory.
Consider the trilinear form for twisted convolution on $\mathbb{R}^{2d}$: \begin{equation*} \mathcal{T}_t(\mathbf{f}):=\iint f_1(x)f_2(y)f_3(x+y)e^{itσ(x,y)}dxdy,\end{equation*} where $σ$ is a symplectic form and $t$ is a real-valued parameter. It is known that in the case $t\neq0$ the optimal constant for twisted convolution is the same as that for convolution, though no extremizers exist. Expanding about the manifold of triples of maximizers and $t=0$ we prove a sharpened inequality for twisted convolution with an arbitrary antisymmetric form in place of $σ$.
Let $\mathbb{S}^{d-1}$ denote the unit sphere in Euclidean space $\mathbb{R}^d$, $d\geq 2$, equipped with surface measure $σ_{d-1}$. An instance of our main result concerns the regularity of solutions of the convolution equation \[ a\cdot(fσ_{d-1})^{\ast {(q-1)}}\big\vert_{\mathbb{S}^{d-1}}=f,\text{ a.e. on }\mathbb{S}^{d-1}, \] where $a\in C^\infty(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$, $q\geq 2(d+1)/(d-1)$ is an integer, and the only a priori assumption is $f\in L^2(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$. We prove that any such solution belongs to the class $C^\infty(\mathbb{S}^{d-1})$. In particular, we show that all critical po…
We find two-sides estimates for the best uniform approximations of classes of convolutions of $2π$-periodic functions from unit ball of the space $L_p, 1 \le p <\infty,$ with fixed kernels, modules of Fourier coefficients of which satisfy the condition $\sum\limits_{k=n+1}^\inftyψ(k)<ψ(n).$ In the case of $\sum\limits_{k=n+1}^\inftyψ(k)=o(1)ψ(n)$ the obtained estimates become the asymptotic equalities.
The Hölder-Brascamp-Lieb inequalities are a collection of multilinear inequalities generalizing a convolution inequality of Young and the Loomis-Whitney inequalities. The full range of exponents was classified in Bennett et al. (2008). In a setting similar to that of Ivanisvili and Volberg (2015), we introduce a notion of size for these inequalities which generalizes $L^p$ norms. Under this new setup, we then determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a generalized Hölder-Brascamp-Lieb type inequality to hold and establish sufficient conditions for extremizers to exist when the underlyi…
We obtain exact for order estimates of best uniform approximations and uniform approximations by Fourier sums of classes of convolutions the periodic functions belong to unit balls of spaces $L_{p}, \ {1\leq p<\infty}$, with generating kernel $Ψ_β$, whose absolute values of Fourier coefficients $ψ(k)$ are such that $\sum\limits_{k=1}^{\infty}ψ^{p'}(k)k^{p'-2}<\infty$, $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1$, and product $ψ(n)n^{\frac{1}{p}}$ can't tend to nought faster than power functions.
On the sets of $2π$-periodic functions $f$, which are defined with a help of $(ψ, β)$-integrals of the functions $φ$ from $L_{1}$, we establish Lebesgue-type inequalities, in which the uniform norms of deviations of Fourier sums are expressed via the best approximations by trigonometric polynomials of the functions $φ$. We prove that obtained estimates are best possible, in the case when the sequences $ψ(k)$ decrease to zero faster than any power function. In some important cases we establish the asymptotic equalities for the exact upper boundaries of uniform approximations by Fourier sums on …
In metric of spaces $L_{s}, \ 1< s\leq\infty$, we obtain exact order estimates of best approximations and approximations by Fourier sums of classes of convolutions the periodic functions that belong to unit ball of space $L_{1}$, with generating kernel $Ψ_β(t)=\sum\limits_{k=1}^{\infty}ψ(k)\cos(kt-\frac{βπ}{2})$, $β\in\mathbb{R}$, whose coefficients $ψ(k)$ are such that product $ψ(n)n^{1-\frac{1}{s}}$, $1<s\leq\infty$, can't tend to nought faster than every power function and besides, if $1<s<\infty$, then $\sum\limits_{k=1}^{\infty}ψ^{s}(k)k^{s-2}<\infty$ and if $s=\infty$, then $\sum\limits_…
We obtain order estimates for the best uniform orthogonal trigonometric approximations of $2π$-periodic functions, whose $(ψ,β)$-derivatives belong to unit balls of spaces $L_{p}, \ 1\leq p<\infty$, in case at consequences $ψ(k)$ are that product $ψ(n)n^{\frac{1}{p}}$ can tend to zero slower than any power function and $\sum\limits_{k=1}^{\infty}ψ^{p'}(k)k^{p'-2}<\infty$ when $1<p<\infty$, $\frac{1}{p}+\frac{1}{p'}=1$ and $\sum\limits_{k=1}^{\infty}ψ(k)<\infty$ when $p=1$. We also establish the analogical estimates in $L_{s}$-metric, $1< s\leq \infty$, for classes of the summable $(ψ,β)$-diffe…
The $L^q$ dimensions, for $1<q<\infty$, quantify the degree of smoothness of a measure. We study the following problem on the real line: when does the $L^q$ dimension improve under convolution? This can be seen as a variant of the well-known $L^p$-improving property. Our main result asserts that uniformly perfect measures (which include Ahlfors-regular measures as a proper subset) have the property that convolving with them results in a strict increase of the $L^q$ dimension. We also study the case $q=\infty$, which corresponds to the supremum of the Frostman exponents of the measure. We obtai…
Let $\T (0\leq α<n)$ be the singular and fractional integrals with variable kernel $Ω(x,z)$, and $[b,\T]$ be the commutator generated by $\T$ and a Lipschitz function $b$. In this paper, the authors study the boundedness of $[b,\T]$ on the Hardy spaces, under some assumptions such as the $L^r$-Dini condition. Similar results and the weak type estimates at the end-point cases are also given for the homogeneous convolution operators $\tT (0\leq α<n)$. The smoothness conditions imposed on $\tOmega$ are weaker than the corresponding known results.
We prove that kernels of analytic functions of kind $H_{h,β}(t)=\sum\limits_{k=1}^{\infty}\frac{1}{\cosh kh}\cos\Big(kt-\frac{βπ}{2}\Big)$, $h>0$, ${β\in\mathbb{R}}$, satisfies Kushpel's condition $C_{y,2n}$ beginning with some number $n_h$ which is explicitly expressed by parameter $h$ of smoothness of the kernel. As a consequence, for all $n\geqslant n_h$ we obtain lower bounds for Kolmogorov widths $d_{2n}$ of functional classes that are representable as convolutions of kernel $H_{h,β}$ with functions $φ\perp1$, which belong to the unit ball in the space $L_{\infty}$, in the space $C$. The …
