For a Banach space $X$ by $Conv_H(X)$ we denote the space of non-empty closed convex subsets of $X$, endowed with the Hausdorff metric. We prove that for any closed convex set $C\subset X$ and its metric component $H_C=\{A\in Conv_H(X):d_H(A,C)<\infty\}$ in $Conv_H(X)$, the following conditions are equivalent: (1) $C$ is approximatively polyhedral, which means that for every $ε>0$ there is a polyhedral convex subset $P\subset X$ on Hausdorff distance $d_H(P,C)<ε$ from $C$; (2) $C$ lies on finite Hausdorff distance $d_H(C,P)$ from some polyhedral convex set $P\subset X$; (3) the metric space $(H_C,d_H)$ is separable; (4) $H_C$ has density $dens(H_C)<\mathfrak c$; (5) $H_C$ does not contain a positively hiding convex set $P\subset X$.
If the Banach space $X$ is finite-dimensional, then the conditions (1)--(5) are equivalent to: (6) $C$ is not positively hiding; (7) $C$ is not infinitely hiding.
A convex subset $C\subset X$ is called {\em positively hiding} (resp. {\em infinitely hiding}) if there is an infinite set $A\subset X\setminus C$ such that $\inf_{a\in A}dist(a,C)>0$ (resp. $\sup_{a\in A}dist(a,C)=\infty$) and for any distinct points $a,b\in A$ the segment $[a,b]$ meets the set $C$.
In this paper, we show that the sum of a compact convex subset and a simultaneously $τ$-strongly proximinal convex subset (resp. simultaneously approximatively $τ$-compact convex subset) of a Banach space X is simultaneously tau-strongly proximinal (resp. simultaneously approximatively $τ$-compact ), and the sum of weakly compact convex subset and a simultaneously approximatively weakly compact convex subset of X is still simultaneously approximatively weakly compact, where $τ$ is the norm or the weak topology. Moreover, some related results on the sum of simultaneously proximinal subspaces ar…
Let $E$ be a $(\mathrm{IV})$-polyhedral Banach space. We show that, for each $ε>0$, $E$ admits an $ε$-equivalent $\mathrm{(V)}$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points. In particular, we obtain that every separable isomorphically polyhedral Banach space, for each $ε>0$, admits an $ε$-equivalent $(\mathrm{V})$-polyhedral norm such that the corresponding closed unit ball is the closed convex hull of its extreme points.
We prove that an onto isometry between unit spheres of finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces extends to a linear isometry of the corresponding spaces.
We show that if $X$ and $Y$ are Banach spaces, where $Y$ is separable and polyhedral, and if $T:X \to Y$ is a bounded linear operator such that $T^*(Y^*)$ contains a boundary $B$ of $X$, then $X$ is separable and isomorphic to a polyhedral space. Some corollaries of this result are presented.
In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called $w^*$-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.
We show that norms on certain Banach spaces $X$ can be approximated uniformly, and with arbitrary precision, on bounded subsets of $X$ by $C^{\infty}$ smooth norms and polyhedral norms. In particular, we show that this holds for any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$, where $Γ$ is an arbitrary set. We also give a necessary condition for the existence of a polyhedral norm on a weakly compactly generated Banach space, which extends a well-known result of Fonf.
A Banach space is polyhedral if the unit ball of each of its finite dimensional subspaces is a polyhedron. It is known that a polyhedral Banach space has a separable dual and is $c_0$-saturated, i.e., each closed infinite dimensional subspace contains an isomorph of $c_0$. In this paper, we show that the Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ is isomorphic to a polyhedral Banach space if $\lim_{t\to 0}M(Kt)/M(t) = \infty$ for some $K < \infty$. We also construct an Orlicz sequence space $h_M$ which is $c_0$-saturated, but which is not isomorphic to any polyhedral Banach space. This shows that being $c_0$…
We characterize $k-$smoothness of an element on the unit sphere of a finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach space. Then we study $k-$smoothness of an operator $T \in \mathbb{L}(\ell_{\infty}^n,\mathbb{Y}),$ where $\mathbb{Y}$ is a two-dimensional Banach space with the additional condition that $T$ attains norm at each extreme point of $B_{\ell_{\infty}^{n}}.$ We also characterize $k-$smoothness of an operator defined between $\ell_{\infty}^3$ and $\ell_{1}^3.$
Let $(x_n)$ be a sequence in a Banach space $X$ which does not converge in norm, and let $E$ be an isomorphically precisely norming set for $X$ such that \[ \sum_n |x^*(x_{n+1}-x_n)|< \infty, \; \forall x^* \in E. \qquad (*) \] Then there exists a subsequence of $(x_n)$ which spans an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space. It follows immediately from results of V. Fonf that the converse is also true: If a separable Banach space $Y$ is a separable isomorphically polyhedral then there exists a non norm convergent sequence $(x_n)$ which spans $Y$ and there exists an isomorphically precisely norm…
The aim of this note is to present two results that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces, having either a Schauder basis or an uncountable unconditional basis, easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both results are based on decomposing the unit sphere of a Banach space into countably many pieces, such that each one satisfies certain properties. Some examples of spaces having equivalent polyhedral norms are given.
We give two examples of polyhedral Banach spaces failing all the diameter two properties, showing that there is not any connection between polyhedrality and the diameter two properties.
The aim of this paper is to present two tools, Theorems 4 and 7, that make the task of finding equivalent polyhedral norms on certain Banach spaces easier and more transparent. The hypotheses of both tools are based on countable decompositions, either of the unit sphere S_X or of certain subsets of the dual ball of a given Banach space X. The sufficient conditions of Theorem 4 are shown to be necessary in the separable case. Using Theorem 7, we can unify two known results regarding the polyhedral renorming of certain C(K) spaces, and spaces having an (uncountable) unconditional basis. New exam…
We study delta-points in Banach spaces $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ generated by adequate families $\mathcal A$ where $1 \le p < \infty$. In the case the familiy $\mathcal A$ is regular and $p=1,$ these spaces are known as combinatorial Banach spaces. When $p > 1$ we prove that neither $h_{\mathcal{A},p}$ nor its dual contain delta-points. Under the extra assumption that $\mathcal A$ is regular, we prove that the same is true when $p=1.$ In particular the Schreier spaces and their duals fail to have delta-points. If $\mathcal A$ consists of finite sets only we are able to rule out the existence of delt…
For every Banach space $Z$ with a shrinking unconditional basis satisfying upper $p$-estimates for some $p > 1$, an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $Z$.
We extend the result of B. Cascales at al. about expand-contract plasticity of the unit ball of strictly convex Banach space to those spaces whose unit ball is the union of all its finite-dimensional polyhedral extreme subsets. We also extend the definition of expand-contract plasticity to uniform spaces and generalize the theorem on expand-contract plasticity of totally bounded metric spaces to this new setting.
For every $ 1 < p < \infty $ an isomorphically polyhedral Banach space $E_p$ is constructed having an unconditional basis and admitting a quotient isomorphic to $\ell_p$. It is also shown that $E_p$ is not isomorphic to a subspace of a $C(K)$ space for every countable and compact metric space $K$.
We completely characterize the left-symmetric points, the right-symmetric points, and, the symmetric points in the sense of Birkhoff-James, in a Banach space. We obtain a complete characterization of the left-symmetric (right-symmetric) points in the infinity sum of two Banach spaces, in terms of the left-symmetric (right-symmetric) points of the constituent spaces. As an application of this characterization, we explicitly identify the left-symmetric (right-symmetric) points of some well-known three-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces.
We show the existence of a compact metric space $K$ such that whenever $K$ embeds isometrically into a Banach space $Y$, then any separable Banach space is linearly isometric to a subspace of $Y$. We also address the following related question: if a Banach space $Y$ contains an isometric copy of the unit ball or of some special compact subset of a separable Banach space $X$, does it necessarily contain a subspace isometric to $X$? We answer positively this question when $X$ is a polyhedral finite-dimensional space, $c_0$ or $\ell_1$.
Relatively recently it was proved that if $Γ$ is an arbitrary set, then any equivalent norm on $c_0(Γ)$ can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by polyhedral norms and $C^\infty$ smooth norms, with arbitrary precision. We extend this result to more classes of spaces having uncountable symmetric bases, such as preduals of the `discrete' Lorentz spaces $d(w,1,Γ)$, and certain symmetric Nakano spaces and Orlicz spaces. We also show that, given an arbitrary ordinal number $α$, there exists a scattered compact space $K$ having Cantor-Bendixson height at least $α$, such that every equivalent n…
In terms of fragmentability, we describe a new class of Banach spaces which do not contain weak-G_delta open bounded subsets. In particular, none of these spaces is isomorphic to a separable polyhedral space.
We explore the relation between the orthogonality of bounded linear operators in the space of operators and that of elements in the ground space. To be precise, we study if $ T, A \in \mathbb{L}(\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y}) $ satisfy $ T \bot_B A,$ then whether there exists $ x \in \mathbb{X} $ such that $ Tx\bot_B Ax$ with $ \|x\| =1, \|Tx\| = \|T\|$, where $\mathbb{X}, \mathbb{Y} $ are normed linear spaces. In this context, we introduce the notion of Property $ P_n $ for a Banach space and illustrate its connection with orthogonality of a bounded linear operator between Banach spaces. We further …
We introduce and study Banach spaces which have property CWO, i.e., every finite convex combination of relatively weakly open subsets of their unit ball is open in the relative weak topology of the unit ball. Stability results of such spaces are established, and we introduce and discuss a geometric condition---property (co)---on a Banach space. Property (co) essentially says that the operation of taking convex combinations of elements of the unit ball is, in a sense, an open map. We show that if a finite dimensional Banach space $X$ has property (co), then for any scattered locally compact Hau…
We show that all the symmetric projective tensor products of a Banach space $X$ have the Daugavet property provided $X$ has the Daugavet property and either $X$ is an $L_1$-predual (i.e.\ $X^*$ is isometric to an $L_1$-space) or $X$ is a vector-valued $L_1$-space. In the process of proving it, we get a number of results of independent interest. For instance, we characterise "localised" versions of the Daugavet property (i.e.\ Daugavet points and $Δ$-points recently introduced) for $L_1$-preduals in terms of the extreme points of the topological dual, a result which allows to characterise a pol…
The linear projection constant $Π(E)$ of a finite-dimensional real Banach space $E$ is the smallest number $C\in [0,+\infty)$ such that $E$ is a $C$-absolute retract in the category of real Banach spaces with bounded linear maps. We denote by $Π_n$ the maximal linear projection constant amongst $n$-dimensional Banach spaces. In this article, we prove that $Π_n$ may be determined by computing eigenvalues of certain two-graphs. From this result we obtain that the relative projection constants of codimension $n$ converge to $1+Π_n$. Furthermore, using the classification of $K_4$-free two-graphs, …
