The category of I-spaces is the diagram category of spaces indexed by finite sets and injections. This is a symmetric monoidal category whose commutative monoids model all E-infinity spaces. Working in the category of I-spaces enables us to simplify and strengthen previous work on group completion and units of E-infinity spaces. As an application we clarify the relation to Gamma-spaces and show how the spectrum of units associated with a commutative symmetric ring spectrum arises through a chain of Quillen adjunctions.
We recall the cohomological interpretation of the unipotent quotients of the fundamental groupoid of an algebraic complex variety (Beilinson, Deligne-Goncharov). We then give a construction of the resutting transition morphisms in terms of singular homology.
Let $M$ be a topological monoid with homotopy group completion $ΩBM$. Under a strong homotopy commutativity hypothesis on $M$, we show that $π_k (ΩBM)$ is the quotient of the monoid of free homotopy classes $[S^k, M]$ by its submonoid of nullhomotopic maps. We give two applications. First, this result gives a concrete description of the Lawson homology of a complex projective variety in terms of point-wise addition of spherical families of effective algebraic cycles. Second, we apply this result to monoids built from the unitary, or general linear, representation spaces of discrete groups, lea…
Following Boardman-Vogt, McDuff, Segal, and others, we construct a monoidal topological groupoid or space of finite subsets of the plane, and interpret the Burau representation of knot theory as a topological quantum field theory defined on it. Its determinant or {\bf writhe} is an invertible braided monoidal TQFT which group completes to define a Hopkins-Mahowald model for integral homology as an $E_2$ Thom spectrum. We use these ideas to construct an infinite cyclic (Alexander) cover for the space of finite subsets of $\C$, and we argue that the TQFT defined by Burau is closely related to th…
We give an overview of five rationalization theories for spaces (Bousfield-Kan's $\mathbb Q$-completion; Sullivan's rationalization; Bousfield's homology rationalization; Casacuberta-Peschke's $Ω$-rationalization; Gómez-Tato-Halperin-Tanré's $π_1$-fiberwise rationalization) that extend the classical rationalization of simply connected spaces. We also give an overview of the corresponding rationalization theories for groups ($\mathbb Q$-completion; $H\mathbb Q$-localization; Baumslag rationalization) that extend the classical Malcev completion.
We consider a functor from the category of groups to itself $G\mapsto \mathbb Z_\infty G$ that we call right exact $\mathbb Z$-completion of a group. It is connected with the pronilpotent completion $\hat G$ by the short exact sequence $1\to {\varprojlim}^1\: M_n G \to \mathbb Z_\infty G \to \hat G \to 1,$ where $M_n G$ is $n$-th Baer invariant of $G.$ We prove that $\mathbb Z_\infty π_1(X)$ is an invariant of homological equivalence of a space $X$. Moreover, we prove an analogue of Stallings' theorem: if $G\to G'$ is a 2-connected group homomorphism, then $\mathbb Z_\infty G\cong \mathbb Z_\i…
In this note we show that a $p$-complete nilpotent space $X$ has a $p$-complete suspension spectrum if and only if its homotopy groups $π_*X$ are bounded $p$-torsion. In contrast, if $π_*X$ is not all bounded $p$-torsion, we locate uncountable rational vector spaces in the integral homology and in the stable homotopy groups of $X$. To prove this, we establish a homological criterion for $p$-completeness of connective spectra. Moreover, we illustrate our results by studying the stable homotopy groups of $K(\mathbb{Z}_p,n)$ via Goodwillie calculus.
We show that the twisted K-theory of the classifying space of a p-local finite group is isomorphic to the completion of the Grothendieck group of twisted representations of the fusion system with respect to the augmentation ideal of the representation ring of the fusion system. We use this result to compute the K-theory of the Ruiz-Viruel exotic 7-local finite groups.
