We give a proof of the Jardine-Tillmann generalized group completion theorem. It is much in the spirit of the original homology fibration approach by McDuff and Segal, but follows a modern treatment of homotopy colimits, using as little simplicial technology as possible. We compare simplicial and topological definitions of homology fibrations.
In this paper we prove a stability result for inner fibrations in terms of the wide, or fat join operation on simplicial sets. We also prove some additional results on inner anodyne morphisms that may be of independent interest.
The purpose of this note is to clarify some details in McDuff and Segal's proof of the group-completion theorem and to generalize both this and the homology fibration criterion of McDuff to homology with twisted coefficients. This will be used in forthcoming work to identify the limiting homology of "oriented" configuration spaces, which doubly cover the classical configuration spaces of distinct unordered points in a manifold.
We derive spectral sequences for the intersection homology of stratified fibrations and approximate tubular neighborhoods in manifold stratified spaces. These neighborhoods include regular neighborhoods in PL stratified spaces.
We gather conditions on a class H of continuous maps of topological spaces that allow a reasonable theory of fibrations up to an equivalence (a map from this class) which we call H-fibrations. The weak homotopy equivalences recover quasifibrations and homology equivalences yield homology fibrations. We study local H-fibrations that behave nicely with respect to homotopy colimits together with universal H-fibrations that behave nicely with respect to pullbacks. We then proceed to classify H-fibrations up to a natural notion of equivalence.

In this paper, we develop Leray-Serre-type spectral sequences to compute the intersection homology of the regular neighborhood and deleted regular neighborhood of the bottom stratum of a stratified PL-pseudomanifold. The E^2 terms of the spectral sequences are given by the homology of the bottom stratum with a local coefficient system whose stalks consist of the intersection homology modules of the link of this stratum (or the cone on this link). In the course of this program, we establish the properties of stratified fibrations over unfiltered base spaces and of their mapping cylinders. We al…
The mod p homology of E-infinity spaces is a classical topic in algebraic topology traditionally approached in terms of Dyer--Lashof operations. In this paper, we offer a new perspective on the subject by providing a detailed investigation of an alternative family of homology operations equivalent to, but distinct from, the Dyer--Lashof operations. Among other things, we will relate these operations to the Dyer--Lashof operations, describe the algebra generated by them, and use them to describe the homology of free E-infinity spaces. We will also investigate the relationship between the operat…
Motivated by prominent problems like the Hilali conjecture Yamaguchi--Yokura recently proposed certain estimates on the relations of the dimensions of rational homotopy and rational cohomology groups of fibre, base and total spaces in a fibration of rationally elliptic spaces. In this article we prove these estimates in the category of formal elliptic spaces and, in general, whenever the total space in addition has positive Euler characteristic or has the rational homotopy type of a homogeneous manifold (respectively of a known example) of positive sectional curvature. Additionally, we provide…
In their previous work, Barraud and Cornea enriched the Lagrangian Floer complex by adding cubical chains in the based loop space of the Lagrangian, and recovered the Leray-Serre spectral sequence of the based path space fibration, assuming that the Lagrangian is weakly exact and simply connected. In the present article, we remove the simple connectivity assumption and adapt the construction to any Hurewicz fibration. To this end, we introduce a stronger notion of local systems than the classical one, as a topological functor from the free path space of a manifold to the category of topologica…
Given a cohomology theory, there is a well-known abstract way to define the dual homology theory using the theory of spectra. In [4] the author provides a more geometric construction of the homology theory, using a generalization of the bordism groups. Such a generalization involves in its definition the vector bundle modification, which is a particular case of the Gysin map. In this paper we provide a more natural variant of that construction, which replaces the vector bundle modification with the Gysin map itself, which is the natural push-forward in cohomology. We prove that the two constru…
The Representation Theorem by Zomorodian and Carlsson has been the starting point of the study of persistent homology under the lens of algebraic representation theory. In this work, we give a more accurate statement of the original theorem and provide a complete and self-contained proof. Furthermore, we generalize the statement from the case of linear sequences of $R$-modules to $R$-modules indexed over more general monoids. This generalization subsumes the Representation Theorem of multidimensional persistence as a special case.
Parallel transport in a fibre bundle with respect to smooth paths in the base space B have recently been extended to representations of the smooth singular simplicial set Sing_{smooth}(B). Inspired by these extensions,I revisit the development of a notion of `parallel' transport in the topological setting of fibrations with the homotopy lifting property and then extend it to representations of Sing(B) on such fibrations. Closely related is the notion of (strong or `infty') homotopy action, which has variants under a variety of names.
The aim of this short paper is to establish a spectral algebra analog of the Bousfield-Kan "fibration lemma" under appropriate conditions. We work in the context of algebraic structures that can be described as algebras over an operad $\mathcal{O}$ in symmetric spectra. Our main result is that completion with respect to topological Quillen homology (or TQ-completion, for short) preserves homotopy fibration sequences provided that the base and total $\mathcal{O}$-algebras are connected. Our argument essentially boils down to proving that the natural map from the homotopy fiber to its TQ-complet…
The Dold$-$Thom theorem states that for a sufficiently nice topological space, M, there is an isomorphism between the homotopy groups of the infinite symmetric product of M and the homology groups of M itself. The crux of most known proofs of this is to check that a certain map is a quasi-fibration. It is our goal to present a more direct proof of the Dold$-$Thom theorem which does appeal to any such fact. The heart of our proof lies in identification of the infinite symmetric product as an instance of factorization homology.
In their 2012 paper, Bobadilla and Kollár studied topological conditions which guarantee that a proper map of complex algebraic varieties is a topological or differentiable fibration. They also asked whether a certain finiteness property on the relative covering space can imply that a proper map is a fibration. In this paper, we answer positively the integral homology version of their question in the case of abelian varieties, and the rational homology version in the case of compact ball quotients. We also propose several conjectures in relation to the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the complex pro…
In 1995 the author, Jones, and Segal introduced the notion of "Floer homotopy theory". The proposal was to attach a (stable) homotopy type to the geometric data given in a version of Floer homology. More to the point, the question was asked, "When is the Floer homology isomorphic to the (singular) homology of a naturally occuring (pro)spectrum defined from the properties of the moduli spaces inherent in the Floer theory?". A proposal for how to construct such a spectrum was given in terms of a "framed flow category", and some rather simple examples were described. Years passed before this noti…
We generalize the results of a previous paper of ours to compact Lie groups. Using a recently developed ordinary equivariant homology and cohomology, we define equivariant Poincare complexes with the properties that (1) every compact G-manifold is an equivariant Poincare complex, (2) every finite equivariant Poincare complex (with some mild additional hypotheses) has an equivariant spherical Spivak normal fibration, and (3) the Pi-Pi Theorem holds for equivariant Poincare pairs under suitable gap hypotheses. The nice behavior of the ordinary equivariant homology and cohomology theories allows …
Let H be a symplectic vector space, let V be a vector space, and consider the nilpotent Lie algebra L_H(V) = H \otimes V + S^2(V) with bracket [(h_1 \otimes v_1;a_1),(h_2 \otimes v_2;a_2)] = (0,<h_1,h_2> v_1 v_2) . In this paper, we calculate the Lie algebra homology of L_H(V) as a polynomial functor of V. This has applications to the analysis of the Leray-Serre spectral sequence of the fibrations of moduli spaces of pointed curves M_{1,n}->M_{1,1} and M_{g,n}->M_g.
We compute the mod two homology Hopf rings of the spectra KO and KU. The spaces in these spectra are the infinite classical groups and their coset spaces, and their homology was first calculated in the Cartan seminars, but the Hopf ring structure was first determined in the second author's unpublished PhD thesis. The presentation given here serves as an introduction to the first author's much more intricate work on the connective spectrum bo. The Hopf ring viewpoint turns out to be very convenient for understanding the homological effect of various maps between classical groups and fibrations …
This paper compares two invariants of foliated manifolds which seem to measure the non-Hausdorffness of the leaf space: the transversal length on the fundamental group and the foliated Gromov norm on the homology. We consider foliations with the property that the set of singular simplices transverse to the foliation satisfies a weakened version of the Kan extension property. (We prove that this assumption is fairly general: it holds for all fibration-covered foliations, in particular for all foliations of 3-manifolds without Reeb components.) For such foliations we show that vanishing of the t…
Tate cohomology (as well as Borel homology and cohomology) of connective K-theory for $G=(\mathbb{Z}/2)^n$ was completely calculated by Bruner and Greenlees. In this note, we essentially redo the calculation by a different, more elementary method, and we extend it to $p>2$ prime. We also identify the resulting spectra, which are products of Eilenberg-Mac Lane spectra, and finitely many finite Postnikov towers. For $p=2$, we also reconcile our answer completely with the result of Bruner and Greenlees, which is in a different form, and hence the comparison involves some non-trivial combinatorics…
Given any connected topological space $X$, assume that there exists an epimorphism $ϕ: π_1(X) \to \mathbb{Z}$. The deck transformation group $\mathbb{Z}$ acts on the associated infinite cyclic cover $X^ϕ$ of $X$, hence on the homology group $H_i(X^ϕ, \mathbb{C})$. This action induces a linear automorphism on the torsion part of the homology group as a module over the Laurent ring $\mathbb{C}[t,t^{-1}]$, which is a finite dimensional $\mathbb{C}$-vector space. We study the sizes of the Jordan blocks of this linear automorphism. When $X$ is a compact Kähler manifold, we show that all the Jordan …
