We map the problem of the orbital excitation (orbiton) in a 2D antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ground state onto a problem of a hole in 2D antiferromagnet. The orbiton turns out to be coupled to magnons and can only be mobile on a strongly renormalized scale by dressing with magnetic excitations. We show that this leads to a dispersion relation reflecting the two-site unit cell of the antiferromagnetic background, in contrast to the predictions based on a mean-field approximation and linear orbital-wave theory.
We study the effect of four-particle ring exchange process on orbital antiferromagnetic state that occurs in some correlated electron systems in two dimensions. The primary question is whether the ring exchange process enhances or suppresses the orbital antiferromagnetic ordering. Using the fact that the orbital antiferromagnetic state arises in the large-N limit of the SU(N) generalization of the t-J model, we consider the large-N limit of the t-J-$K$ model where $K$ represents the four-particle ring exchange term. The phase diagrams in the large-N mean field theory are obtained for the half-…
We have extended our previous series studies of quantum antiferromagnets at zero temperature by computing the one-magnon dispersion curves and various structure factors for the linear chain, square and simple cubic lattices. Many of these results are new; others are a substantial extension of previous work. These results are directly comparable with neutron scattering experiments and we make such comparisons where possible.
A generalized Schwinger boson representation is proposed to describe the two-dimensional SU(4) symmetric spin-orbital quantum antiferromagnet. A uniform mean field solution gives rise to an antiferromagnetic long range ordered state with a small staggered magnetization $m_{s}=0.07566$, and the recent quantum Monte Carlo simulations on rather large lattice sizes have provided strong evidence to support these mean field results.
Evolution of the hole spectral function along the Gamma-(pi,pi) cut is studied in the antiferromagnetic state of the Hubbard model. The kink in the calculated hole dispersion, the sharp spectral-weight transfer between the branches, and the drastically suppressed coherent spectral weight near k=(0,0), as observed recently in the high-resolution ARPES studies of cuprate antiferromagnets, are shown to be strongly enhanced by finite-U double-occupancy effects. Together with the anomalous spin-wave dispersion observed earlier in high-resolution neutron-scattering studies, the present study provide…
Antikink dispersion of the asymmetric $J_1$-$J_2$ sawtooth spin-1/2 anisotropic Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain has been derived. Value of spin-gap is obtained by estimating the minimum of dispersion relation variationally. The exact doubly-degenerate ground state energy has been derived at the symmetric point, $J_1=J_2$, for the whole anisotropic regime. Analytic form of dispersion relations of three different antikink states is obtained and their validity in the parameter space is discussed. The value of spin-gap, specific heat and susceptibility are estimated numerically by diagonalizing…
The Berry phase due to the spin wavefunction gives rise to the orbital ferromagnetism and anomalous Hall effect in the non-coplanar antiferromagnetic ordered state on face centered cubic (fcc) lattice once the crystal is distorted perpendicular to (1,1,1) or (1,1,0)- plane. The relevance to the real systems $γ$-FeMn and NiS$_2$ is also discussed.
Motivated by the quasi-1D antiferromagnet CaV$_2$O$_4$, we explore spin-orbital systems in which the spin modes are gapped but orbitals are near a macroscopically degenerate classical transition. Within a simplified model we show that gapless orbital liquid phases possessing power-law correlations may occur without the strict condition of a continuous orbital symmetry. For the model proposed for CaV$_2$O$_4$, we find that an orbital phase with coexisting order parameters emerges from a multicritical point. The effective orbital model consists of zigzag-coupled transverse field Ising chains. Th…
The effect of Jahn-Teller phonons on the magnetic and orbital structure of LaMnO$_3$ is investigated using a combination of relaxation and Monte Carlo techniques on three-dimensional clusters of MnO$_6$ octahedra. In the physically relevant region of parameter space for LaMnO$_3$, and after including small corrections due to tilting effects, the A-type antiferromagnetic and C-type orbital structures were stabilized, in agreement with experiments.
We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations and numerical analytic continuation to study high-energy spin excitations in the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperature. We present results for both the transverse and longitudinal dynamic spin structure factor S(q,w) at q=(pi,0) and (pi/2,pi/2). Linear spin-wave theory predicts no dispersion on the line connecting these momenta. Our calculations show that in fact the magnon energy at (pi,0) is 10% lower than at (pi/2,pi/2). We also discuss the transverse and longitudinal multi-magnon continua and their relevance to neutron sc…
The magnetic response of antiferromagnetic CsO2, coming from the p-orbital S=1/2 spins of anionic O2- molecules, is followed by 133Cs nuclear magnetic resonance across the structural phase transition occuring at Ts1=61 K on cooling. Above Ts1, where spins form a square magnetic lattice, we observe a huge, nonmonotonic temperature dependence of the exchange coupling originating from thermal librations of O2- molecules. Below Ts1, where antiferromagnetic spin chains are formed as a result of p-orbital ordering, we observe a spin Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior of spin dynamics. These two inte…
In order to discuss the spin-gap formation in a multiorbital system, we analyze an e_g-orbital Hubbard model on a geometrically frustrated zigzag chain by using a density-matrix renormalization group method. Due to the appearance of a ferro-orbital arrangement, the system is regarded as a one-orbital system, while the degree of spin frustration is controlled by the spatial anisotropy of the orbital. In the region of strong spin frustration, we observe a finite energy gap between ground and first-excited states, which should be called a spin-orbital gap. The physical meaning is clarified by an …
In this short review, which is based on the works published between 2011 and 2016, we discuss the problem of the propagation of a collective orbital excitation (orbiton) created in the Mott insulating and antiferromagnetic ground state. On the theoretical side, the problem is solved by mapping a Kugel-Khomskii spin-orbital model describing an orbiton moving in an antiferromagnet onto an effective t-J model with a 'single hole' moving in an antiferromagnet. The most important consequence of the existence of the above mapping is the fractionalisation of the electron's spin and orbital degree of …
Polar magnetic states are realized in pseudocubic manganite thin films fabricated on high-index substrates, in which a Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion remains an active variable. Several types of orbital-orders were found to develop large optical second harmonic generation, signaling broken-inversion-symmetry distinct from their bulk forms and films on (100) substrates. The observed symmetry-lifting and first-principles calculation both indicate that the modified JT q2 mode drives Mn-site off-centering upon orbital order, leading to the possible cooperation of "Mn-site polarization" and magnetism.
We used femtosecond optical spectroscopy to study ultrafast spin and orbital ordering dynamics in the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$. This chromate system possesses multiple spin and orbital ordered phases, and therefore could enable us to study the unique interplay between these collective phases through their non-equilibrium response to photoexcitation. Here, by varying the pump photon energy, we selectively drove inter-site spin hopping between neighboring Cr $t_{2g}$ orbitals and charge transfer-type transitions between oxygen 2$p$ and Cr $e_{g}$ orbitals. The resulting…
Towards understanding the multi-orbital quantum antiferromagnetism in iron pnictides, effective spin couplings and spin fluctuation induced quantum corrections to sublattice magnetization are obtained in the $(π,0)$ AF state of a realistic three band interacting electron model involving $xz$, $yz$, and $xy$ Fe 3d orbitals. The $xy$ orbital is found to be mainly responsible for the generation of strong ferromagnetic spin coupling in the $b$ direction, which is critically important to fully account for the spin wave dispersion as measured in inelastic neutron scattering experiments. The ferromag…
We explore orbital dynamics in the spin liquid candidate Ba3CuSb2O9 using multi-frequency electron spin resonance. We prepared two high quality single crystals. The crystal with a slight copper deficiency shows a structural phase transition at around 200 K due to the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect, accompanied with orbital ordering. In contrast, the crystal with almost perfect stoichiometry shows no orbital ordering down to the lowest temperature of 1.5 K. Dramatic change in the g-factor anisotropy as a function of frequency and temperature demonstrates orbital quantum fluctuations at a nearly…
An antiferromagnetic Hund coupling in multiorbital Hubbard systems induces orbital freezing and an associated superconducting instability, as well as unique composite orders in the case of an odd number of orbitals. While the rich phase diagram of the half-filled three-orbital model has recently been explored in detail, the properties of the doped system remain to be clarified. Here, we complement the previous studies by computing the entropy of the half-filled model, which exhibits an increase in the orbital-frozen region, and a suppression in the composite ordered phase. The doping dependent…
Recently it was proposed that the orbital ordering of $π_{x,y}^*$ molecular orbitals in the superoxide CsO$_2$ compound leads to the formation of spin-1/2 chains below the structural phase transition occuring at $T_{\rm{s1}}=61$~K on cooling. Here we report a detailed X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) study of this phase in CsO$_2$ powder. The EPR signal appears as a broad line below $T_{\rm{s1}}$, which is replaced by the antiferromagnetic resonance below the Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}=8.3$~K. The temperature dependence of the EPR linewidth between $T_{\rm{s1}}$ and $T_{\rm{N}}$ a…
We discuss the ground state of a pyrochlore lattice of threefold-orbitally-degenerate $S=1/2$ magnetic ions. We derive an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian and show that the orbital degrees of freedom can modulate the spin exchange, removing the infinite spin-degeneracy characteristic of pyrochlore structures. The resulting state is a collection of spin-singlet dimers, with a residual degeneracy due to their relative orientation. This latter is lifted by a magneto-elastic interaction, induced in the spin-singlet phase-space, that forces a tetragonal distortion. Such a theory provides an expla…
We report inelastic neutron scattering results on the spin dynamics in the 50 % hole-doped manganites, Pr{1/2}Sr{1/2}MnO3 and Nd{1/2}Sr{1/2}MnO3. In the paramagnetic phase, these systems exhibit a ridge-type diffuse scattering, indicating a two-dimensional ferromagnetic (FM) correlation. With decreasing temperature, the systems enter the FM state, but simultaneously they develop A-type antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. The spin wave dispersion in the FM state is strongly anisotropic. These behaviors can be consistently interpreted from a viewpoint of the underlying orbital ordering.
The magnetic correlations in the charge- and orbital-ordered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Out of the well-defined CE-type magnetic structure with the corresponding magnons a competition between CE-type and ferromagnetic fluctuations develops. Whereas ferromagnetic correlations are fully suppressed by the static CE-type order at low temperature, elastic and inelastic CE-type correlations disappear with the melting of the charge-orbital order at high temperature. In its charge-orbital disordered phase, La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(…
The mean-field theory with the use of the slave-boson functional method is generalized to take account of the spin- and orbital-ordered state in the doubly degenerate Hubbard model. Some numerical calculations are presented of the antiferromagnetic orbital-ordered state in the half-filled simple-cubic model. The orbital order in the present theory is much reduced compared with that in the Hartree-Fock approximation because of the large orbital fluctuations. From a comparison of the ground-state energy, the antiferromagnetic orbital state is shown to be unstable against the antiferromagnetic sp…
Ultrasound velocity measurements of the orbitally-frustrated GeCo$_2$O$_4$ reveal unusual elastic instabilities due to the phonon-spin coupling within the antiferromagnetic phase. Shear moduli exhibit anomalies arising from the coupling to short-range ferromagnetic excitations. Diplike anomalies in the magnetic-field dependence of elastic moduli reveal magnetic-field-induced orbital order-order transitions. These results strongly suggest the presence of geometrical orbital frustration which causes novel orbital phenomena within the antiferromagnetic phase.
We report a high-resolution neutron diffraction study on the orbitally-degenerate spin-1/2 hexagonal antiferromagnet AgNiO2. A structural transition to a tripled unit cell with expanded and contracted NiO6 octahedra indicates root(3) x root(3) charge order on the Ni triangular lattice. This suggests charge order as a possible mechanism of lifting the orbital degeneracy in the presence of charge fluctuations, as an alternative to Jahn-Teller distortions. A novel magnetic ground state is observed at base temperatures with the electron-rich S = 1 Ni sites arranged in alternating ferromagnetic row…
We report the single-crystal X-ray analysis and magnetic properties of a new double-layered perovskite antiferromagnet, Cs$_3$Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$. This structure is composed of Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$ double layers with elongated CuCl$_4$Br$_2$ octahedra and is closely related to the Sr$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$ structure. An as-grown crystal has a singlet ground state with a large excitation gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B}\simeq 2000$ K, due to the strong antiferromagnetic interaction between the two layers. Cs$_3$Cu$_2$Cl$_4$Br$_3$ undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_{\rm s}\simeq330$ K accompanied by changes …
KO2 exhibits concomitant antiferromagnetic (AFM) and structural transitions, both of which originate from the open-shell 2p electrons of O$_{2}^{-}$ molecules. The structural transition is accompanied by the coherent tilting of O$_{2}^{-}$ molecular axes. The interplay among the spin-orbital-lattice degrees of freedom in KO2 is investigated by employing the first-principles electronic structure theory and the kinetic-exchange interaction scheme. We have shown that the insulating nature of the high symmetry phase of KO2 at high temperature (T) arises from the combined effect of the spin-orbit c…
We describe square lattice spin liquids which break time-reversal symmetry, while preserving translational symmetry. The states are distinguished by the manner in which they transform under mirror symmetries. All the states have non-zero scalar spin chirality, which implies the appearance of spontaneous orbital charge currents in the bulk (even in the insulator); but in some cases, orbital currents are non-zero only in a formulation with three orbitals per unit cell. The states are formulated using both the bosonic and fermionic spinon approaches. We describe states with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ and U(1…
Self-energy corrections due to fermion-magnon interaction are studied in the antiferromagnetic state of the $t-t'-t''$ Hubbard model within the rainbow (noncrossing) approximation in the full $U$ range from weak to strong coupling. The role of classical (mean-field) features of fermion and magnon dispersion, associated with finite $U,t',t''$, are examined on quantum corrections to quasiparticle energy, weight, one-particle density of states etc. A finite-$U$ induced classical dispersion term, absent in the $t-J$ model, is found to play an important role in suppressing the quasiparticle weight …

An incommensurate spin density wave ($Q$ phase) confined inside the superconducting state at high basal plane magnetic field is an unique property of the heavy fermion metal CeCoIn$_5$. The neutron scattering experiments and the theoretical studies point out that this state come out from the soft mode condensation of magnetic resonance excitations. We show that the fixation of direction of antiferromagnetic modulations by a magnetic field reported by Gerber et al., Nat. Phys. {\bf 10}, 126 (2014) is explained by spin-orbit coupling. This result, obtained on the basis of quite general phenomeno…
Novel electronic phenomena frequently form in heavy fermions as a consequence of the mutual nature of localization and itineracy of f electrons. On the magnetically ordered side of the heavy fermion phase diagram, f moments are expected to be localized and decoupled from the Fermi surface. It remains ambiguous whether a Kondo lattice can develop inside the magnetically ordered phase. Using spectroscopic imaging with the scanning tunneling microscope, complemented by neutron scattering, x ray absorption spectroscopy, and dynamical mean field theory, we probe the electronic states in the antifer…
We derive higher-order corrections in the magnon dispersion relations for two- and three-dimensional antiferromagnets exposed to magnetic and staggered fields that are mutually aligned. "Dressing" the magnons is the prerequisite to separate the low-temperature representation of the pressure into a piece due to noninteracting magnons and a piece that corresponds to the magnon-magnon interaction. Both in two and three spatial dimensions, the interaction in the pressure turns out to be attractive. While concrete figures refer to the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ square-lattice and the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ sim…
We present neutron scattering measurements on powder samples of the spinel FeSc2S4 that reveal a previously unobserved magnetic ordering transition occurring at 11.8(2)~K. Magnetic ordering occurs subsequent to a subtle cubic-to-tetragonal structural transition which distorts Fe coordinating sulfur tetrahedra lifting the orbital degeneracy. The application of 1~GPa hydrostatic pressure appears to destabilize this Néel state, reducing the transition temperature to 8.6(8)~K and redistributing magnetic spectral weight to higher energies. The relative magnitudes of ordered $\langle m \rangle^2\!=\…
We report a metal-insulator transition (MIT) in the half-filled multiorbital antiferromagnet (AF) BaMn$_2$Bi$_2$ that is tunable by a magnetic field perpendicular to the AF sublattices. Instead of an Anderson-Mott mechanism usually expected in strongly correlated systems, we find by scaling analyses that the MIT is driven by an Anderson localization. Electrical and thermoelectrical transport measurements in combination with electronic band calculations reveal a strong orbital-dependent correlation effect, where both weakly and strongly correlated $3d$-derived bands coexist with decoupled charg…
We present a systematic analysis on the basis of ab initio calculations and many-body perturbation theory for clarifying the dominant fluctuation in complex charge-spin-orbital coupled systems. For a tight-binding multiband model obtained from the maximally-localized Wannier function analysis of the band structure by the local density approximation, we take into account electron correlations at the level of random phase approximation. To identify the dominant fluctuation, we carry out the eigenmode analysis of the generalized susceptibility that includes all the multiple degrees of freedom: ch…
The excitation spectrum of a S=1/2 2D triangular quantum antiferromagnet is studied using 1/S expansion. Due to the non-collinearity of the classical ground state significant and non-trivial corrections to the spin wave spectrum appear already in the first order in 1/S in contrast to the square lattice antiferromagnet. The resulting magnon dispersion is almost flat in a substantial portion of the Brillouin zone. Our results are in quantitative agreement with recent series expansion studies by Zheng, Fjaerestad, Singh, McKenzie, and Coldea [PRL 96, 057201 (2006) and cond-mat/0608008].
Motivated by the recent discovery of high temperature antiferromagnet SrRu$_2$O$_6$ and its potential to be the parent of a new superconductor, we construct a minimal $t_{2g}$-orbital model on a honeycomb lattice to simulate its low energy band structure. Local Coulomb interaction is taken into account through both random phase approximation and mean field theory. Experimentally observed Antiferromagnetic order is obtained in both approximations. In addition, our theory predicts that the magnetic moments on three $t_{2g}$-orbitals are non-collinear as a result of the strong spin-orbit coupling…
We investigate the electronic state of a CoO_2 plane in the layered cobalt oxides Na_xCoO_2 using the 11 band d-p model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice, where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the LDA band structure. Effects of the Coulomb interaction at a Co site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J', are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We also consider the effect of the Na order at x=0.5, where Na ions form one-dimensional chains, by taking into account of an effective one-dimensiona…
We investigate the influence of the spin-phonon coupling in the triangular antiferromagnet where the coupling is of the exchange-striction type. The magnon dispersion is shown to be modified significantly at wave vector (2pi,0) and its symmetry-related points, exhibiting a roton-like minimum and an eventual instability in the dispersion. Various correlation functions such as equal-time phonon correlation, spin-spin correlation, and local magnetization are calculated in the presence of the coupling.
Applying the correlated electronic structure method based on density functional theory plus the Hubbard $U$ interaction, we have investigated the tetragonal scheelite structure Mott insulator KOsO$_4$, whose $e_g^1$ configuration should be affected only slightly by spin-orbit couping (SOC). The method reproduces the observed antiferromagnetic Mott insulating state, populating the Os $d_{z^2}$ majority orbital. The quarter-filled $e_g$ manifold is characterized by a symmetry breaking due to the tetragonal structure, and the Os ion shows a crystal field splitting $Δ_{cf}$ = 1.7 eV from the $t_{2…
We study a two dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $J_1-J_2$ antiferromagnet in a square lattice using the linearized spin wave theory recognizing the 4-sublattice nature of the underlying magnetic lattice. Multiple magnon modes with optical and acoustic branches about the stable Neel ordered and double acoustic branches about the columnar reference states are obtained for small and large values of $λ(=J_2/J_1)$ respectively. An additional uniaxial anisotropy, for large $λ$, can lead to distinct spin gaps in such systems, as also witnessed experimentally. The single hole spectral behavior in a 2D $…
We report inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the spin dynamics in the layered hexagonal magnet 2H-AgNiO2 which has stacked triangular layers of antiferromagnetically-coupled Ni2+ spins (S=1) ordered in a collinear alternating stripe pattern. We observe a broad band of magnetic excitations above a small gap of 1.8 meV and extending up to 7.5 meV, indicating strongly dispersive excitations. The measured dispersions of the boundaries of the powder-averaged spectrum can be quantitatively explained by a linear spin-wave dispersion for triangular layers with antiferromagnetic nearest- and …
Inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been performed on underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (x = 4.7%) where superconductivity and long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) order coexist. The broad magnetic spectrum found in the normal state develops into a magnetic resonance feature below TC that has appreciable dispersion along c-axis with a bandwidth of 3-4 meV. This is in contrast to the optimally doped x = 8.0% composition, with no long-range AFM order, where the resonance exhibits a much weaker dispersion [see Lumsden et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 102, 107005 (2009)]. The results suggest that the re…
The magnon dispersion in the charge, orbital and spin ordered phase in La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) has been studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering. We find an excellent agreement with a magnetic interaction model basing on the CE-type superstructure. The magnetic excitations are dominated by ferromagnetic exchange parameters revealing a nearly-one dimensional character at high energies. The nearest neighbor ferromagnetic interaction in La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) is significantly larger than the one in the metallic ferromagnetically ordered manganites. The large ferromagnetic interaction in the ch…
In order to clarify a key role of orbital degree of freedom in the spin S=1 Haldane system, we investigate ground-state properties of the t2g-orbital degenerate Hubbard model on the linear chain by using numerical techniques. Increasing the Hund's rule coupling in multi-orbital systems, in general, there occurs a transition from an antiferromagnetic to a ferromagnetic phase. We find that the antiferromagnetic phase is described as the Haldane system with spin gap, while in the ferromagnetic phase, there exists the gapless excitation with respect to orbital degree of freedom. Possible relevance…
We use series expansion methods to calculate the dispersion relation of the one-magnon excitations for the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice nearest-neighbor Heisenberg antiferromagnet above a three-sublattice ordered ground state. Several striking features are observed compared to the classical (large-S) spin-wave spectra. Whereas at low energies the dispersion is only weakly renormalized by quantum fluctuations, significant anomalies are observed at high energies. In particular, we find roton-like minima at special wave-vectors and strong downward renormalization in large parts of the Brillouin zo…
We performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements on a polycrystalline sample of a classical kagome antiferromagnet NaBa$_{2}$Mn$_{3}$F$_{11}$ to investigate the possibility of a dispersionless zero-energy excitation associated with rotation of spins along the chains. The observed spectra indeed exhibit such an excitation with strong intensity at low energy, as well as dispersive excitations with weak intensity at high energy. Combining the measurements with calculations from linear spin-wave theory reveals that NaBa$_{2}$Mn$_{3}$F$_{11}$ is a good realization of the classical kagome anti…
We discuss the ground state properties of a spin 1/2 magnetic ion with threefold $t_{2g}$ orbital degeneracy on a highly frustrated pyrochlore lattice, like Ti$^{3+}$ ion in B-spinel MgTi$_2$O$_4$. We formulate an effective spin-orbital Hamiltonian and study its low energy sector by constructing several exact-eigenstates in the limit of vanishing Hund's coupling. We find that orbital degrees of freedom modulate the spin-exchange energies, release the infinite spin-degeneracy of pyrochlore structure, and drive the system to a non-magnetic spin-singlet manifold. The latter is a collection of spi…
We study the intrinsic orbital magnetization (OM) in antiferromagnets on the distorted face-centered-cubic lattice. The combined lattice distortion and spin frustration induce nontrivial $k$-space Chern invariant, which turns to result in profound effects on the OM properties. We derive a specific relation between the OM and the Hall conductivity, according to which it is found that the intrinsic OM vanishes when the electron chemical potential lies in the Mott gap. The distinct behavior of the intrinsic OM in the metallic and insulating regions is shown. The Berry phase effects on the thermoe…
We study the roton-like dip in the magnon dispersion at the boundary of the Brillouin zone in the isotropic S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet. This high-energy feature is sometimes seen as indication of a fractionalization of the magnons to spinons. In this article, we provide evidence that the description of the dip in terms of magnons can be improved significantly by applying more advanced evaluation schemes. In particular, we illustrate the usefulness of the application of the principle of minimal sensitivity in varied perturbation theory. Thereby, we provide an example for the appli…
The hole-doped antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 two-leg ladder is an important model system for the high-$T_c$ superconductors based on cuprates. Using the technique of self-similar continuous unitary transformations we derive effective Hamiltonians for the charge motion in these ladders. The key advantage of this technique is that it provides effective models explicitly in the thermodynamic limit. A real space restriction of the generator of the transformation allows us to explore the experimentally relevant parameter space. From the effective Hamiltonians we calculate the dispersions for single ho…
We revisit the problem of the dispersion of a single hole injected into a quantum antiferromagnet. We applied a spin-density-wave formalism extended to a large number of orbitals and obtained an integral equation for the full quasiparticle Green's function in the self-consistent "non-crossing" Born approximation. We found that for $t/J \gg 1$, the bare fermionic dispersion is completely overshadowed by the self-energy corrections. We obtain a broad incoherent continuum which extends over a frequency range of $\sim 6t$ and a narrow region of width $O(JS)$ below the top of the valence band, wher…
