We study the roton-like dip in the magnon dispersion at the boundary of the Brillouin zone in the isotropic S=1/2 Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet. This high-energy feature is sometimes seen as indication of a fractionalization of the magnons to spinons. In this article, we provide evidence that the description of the dip in terms of magnons can be improved significantly by applying more advanced evaluation schemes. In particular, we illustrate the usefulness of the application of the principle of minimal sensitivity in varied perturbation theory. Thereby, we provide an example for the application of this approach to an extended condensed matter problem governed by correlations which can trigger analogous investigations for many other systems.
We propose a novel mechanism for exchange-induced exciton-magnon absorptions via hopping between two antiferromagnetically coupled sites and a simultaneous magnetic dipole transition to an excited orbital state. The obtained selection rules correspond to ones for magnetic dipole transitions and are in agreement with the exciton-magnon transitions observed in the quasi one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet KCuF3. The calculated magnon density of states in combination with a structure dependent factor identifies the observed optical magnon sideband to originate from transverse magnon modes.
We report ac susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron scattering measurements on a dipolar-coupled antiferromagnet LiYbF$_4$. For the thermal transition, the order-parameter critical exponent is found to be 0.20(1) and the specific-heat critical exponent -0.25(1). The exponents agree with the 2D XY/h$_4$ universality class despite the lack of apparent two-dimensionality in the structure. The order-parameter exponent for the quantum phase transitions is found to be 0.35(1) corresponding to (2+1)D. These results are in line with those found for LiErF$_4$ which has the same crystal structure, b…
Using $1/S$ expansion, we discuss the magnon spectrum of Heisenberg antiferromagnet (AF) on a simple cubic lattice with small dipolar interaction at small temperature $T\ll T_N$, where $T_N$ is the Neel temperature. Similar to 3D and 2D ferromagnets, quantum and thermal fluctuations renormalize greatly the bare gapless spectrum leading to a gap $Δ\sim ω_0$, where $ω_0$ is the characteristic dipolar energy. This gap is accompanied by anisotropic corrections to the free energy which make the cube edges easy directions for the staggered magnetization (dipolar anisotropy). In accordance with previ…
Magnetization, magnetocaloric, calorimetric, neutron and X-ray diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering measurements are performed on single crystals of BaCdVO(PO$_4$)$_2$. The low-temperature crystal structure is found to be of a lower symmetry than previously assumed. The result is a more complicated model spin Hamiltonian, which we infer from measurements of the spin wave dispersion spectrum. The main finding is a novel spin state which emerges in high magnetic fields after antiferromagnetic order is terminated at $H_{c1}\simeq 4.0$ T. It is a distinct thermodynamic phase with a well-de…
We present a comprehensive study of static and dynamic magnetic properties in the Ising-like dipolar antiferromagnet (AFM) DyScO$_3$\ by means of DC and AC magnetization measurements supported by classical Monte-Carlo calculations. Our AC-susceptibility data show that the magnetic dynamics exhibit a clear crossover from an Arrhenius-like regime to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM) at $T^* = 10$ K. Below $T_{\mathrm{N}} = 3.2$ K DyScO$_3$ orders in an antiferromagnetic $GxAy$-type magnetic structure and the magnetization dynamics slow down to the minute timescale. The low-temperature mag…
We investigate quantum phase transitions for the $s=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a pyrochlore lattice. By means of a series expansion starting from isolated tetrahedra, the ground-state phase diagram is determined. When the ratio of the two competing exchange couplings is varied, the first-order (second-order) quantum phase transition occurs between the two spin gap phases (the spin-gap and the antiferromagnetic phases). We also discuss some properties expected for the s=1 pyrochlore spin system.
Ever since the experiments which founded the field of highly frustrated magnetism, the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet has been the archetypical setting for the study of fluctuation induced exotic ordering. To this day the nature of its classical low-temperature state has remained a mystery: the non-linear nature of the fluctuations around the exponentially numerous harmonically degenerate ground states has not permitted a controlled theory, while its complex energy landscape has precluded numerical simulations at low temperature. Here we present an efficient Monte Carlo algorithm which remo…
We study the Coulomb-to-dipole transition which occurs when the separation $d$ of an electron-hole bilayer system is varied with respect to the characteristic in-layer distances. An analysis of the classical ground state configurations for harmonically confined clusters with $N\leq30$ reveals that the energetically most favorable state can differ from that of two-dimensional pure dipole or Coulomb systems. Performing a normal mode analysis for the N=19 cluster it is found that the lowest mode frequencies exhibit drastic changes when $d$ is varied. Furthermore, we present quantum-mechanical gro…
Recent theoretical research on tensor gauge theories led to the discovery of an exotic type of quasiparticles, dubbed fractons, that obey both charge and dipole conservation. Here we describe physical implementation of dipole conservation laws in realistic systems. We show that fractons find a natural realization in hole-doped antiferromagnets. There, individual holes are largely immobile, while dipolar hole pairs move with ease. First, we demonstrate a broad parametric regime of fracton behavior in hole-doped two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnets viable through five orders in perturbation th…
A dimerized quantum Heisenberg or XY antiferromagnetic chain has a gap in the spectrum. We show that a weak incommensurate modulation around a dimerized chain produces a zero temperature quantum critical point. As the incommensuration wavelength is varied, there is a transition to a modulated gapless state. The critical behaviour is in the universality class of the classical commensurate-incommensurate (Pokrovsky-Talapov) transition. An analogous metal-insulator transition can also take place for an incommensurate chain.
CeRu2Si2 and CeRh2Si2 are two similar heavy fermion stoichiometric compounds located on the two sides of the magnetic quantum critical phase transition. CeRh2Si2 is an antiferromagnet below T_N=36 K with moderate electronic masses whereas CeRu2Si2 is a paramagnetic metal with particularly heavy electrons. Here we present tunneling spectroscopy measurements as a function of temperature (from 0.15 K to 45 K). The tunneling conductance at 0.15 K reveals V-shaped dips around the Fermi level in both compounds, which disappear in CeRu2Si2 above the coherence temperature, and above the Néel temperatu…
We use a variety of series expansion methods at both zero and finite temperature to study an antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin model proposed recently by Miyahara and Ueda for the quasi two-dimensional material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. We confirm that this model exhibits a first-order quantum phase transition at T=0 between a gapped dimer phase and a gapless Néel phase when the ratio $x=J'/J$ of nearest and next-nearest neighbour interactions is varied, and locate the transition at $x_c=0.691(6)$. Using longer series we are able to give more accurate estimates of the model parameters by fitting t…
An $S=1/2$ triangular-lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet with next-nearest-neighbor interactions is investigated under a magnetic field by the numerical-diagonalization method. It is known that, in both cases of weak and strong next-nearest-neighbor interactions, this system reveals a magnetization plateau at one-third of the saturated magnetization. We examine the stability of this magnetization plateau when the amplitude of next-nearest-neighbor interactions is varied. We find that a nonplateau region appears between the plateau phases in the cases of weak and strong next-nearest-neighbor in…

We discuss the role of quantum fluctuations in Heisenberg antiferromagnets on face-centered cubic lattice with small dipolar interaction in which the next-nearest-neighbor exchange coupling dominates over the nearest-neighbor one. It is well known that a collinear magnetic structure which contains (111) ferromagnetic planes arranged antiferromagnetically along one of the space diagonals of the cube is stabilized in this model via order-by-disorder mechanism. On the mean-field level, the dipolar interaction forces spins to lie within (111) planes. By considering 1/S - corrections to the ground …
We report a neutron spin-echo study of the critical dynamics in the $S=5/2$ antiferromagnets MnF$_2$ and Rb$_2$MnF$_4$ with three-dimensional (3D) and two-dimensional (2D) spin systems, respectively, in zero external field. Both compounds are Heisenberg antiferromagnets with a small uniaxial anisotropy resulting from dipolar spin-spin interactions, which leads to a crossover in the critical dynamics close to the Néel temperature, $T_N$. By taking advantage of the $μ\text{eV}$ energy resolution of the spin-echo spectrometer, we have determined the dynamical critical exponents $z$ for both longi…
Low-temperature powder neutron diffraction measurements are performed in the ordered magnetic state of the pyrochlore antiferromagnet Gd2Sn2O7. Symmetry analysis of the diffraction data indicates that this compound has the ground state predicted theoretically for a Heisenberg pyrochlore antiferromagnet with dipolar interactions. The difference in magnetic structures of Gd2Sn2O7 and of nominally analogous Gd2Ti2O7 is found to be determined by a specific type of third-neighbor superexchange interaction on the pyrochlore lattice between spins across empty hexagons.
Low-temperature magnetic resonance study of the quasi-two-dimensional antiferromagnet Cu(en)(H$_2$O)$_2$SO$_4$ (en = C$_2$H$_8$N$_2$) was performed down to 0.45~K. This compound orders antiferromagnetically at 0.9K. The analysis of the resonance data within the hydrodynamic approach allowed to identify anisotropy axes and to estimate the anisotropy parameters for the antiferromagnetic phase. Dipolar spin-spin coupling turns out to be the main contribution to the anisotropy of the antiferromagnetic phase. The splitting of the resonance modes and its non-monotonous dependency on the applied freq…
We study the Kitaev-Heisenberg-$Γ$ model with antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchanges in the strong anisotropic (toric code) limit to understand the phases and the intervening phase transitions between the gapped $Z_2$ quantum spin liquid and the spin-ordered (in the Heisenberg limit) as well as paramagnetic phases (in the pseudo-dipolar, $Γ$, limit). We find that the paramagnetic phase obtained in the large $Γ$ limit has no topological entanglement entropy and is proximate to a gapless critical point of a system described by an equal superposition of differently oriented stacked one-dimensional $Z…
