We investigate the electronic state of a CoO_2 plane in the layered cobalt oxides Na_xCoO_2 using the 11 band d-p model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice, where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the LDA band structure. Effects of the Coulomb interaction at a Co site: the intra- and inter-orbital direct terms U and U', the exchange coupling J and the pair-transfer J', are treated within the Hartree-Fock approximation. We also consider the effect of the Na order at x=0.5, where Na ions form one-dimensional chains, by taking into account of an effective one-dimensional potential Delta epsilon_{d}. It is found that the one-dimensional Na order enhances the Fermi surface nesting and antiferromagnetism is caused which is suppressed due to the frustration effect in the case without the Na order. %It is found that the Na order enhances the Fermi surface nesting resulting in a metallic antiferromagnetism which is suppressed due to the frustration effect in the case without the Na order. Furthermore, we consider the effect of the Coulomb interaction between the nearest-neighbor Co sites V and find that a coexistence of the magnetic, charge and orbital ordered state takes place for V>V_c where the system becomes insulator.
We study the anomalous Hall effect on the antiferromagnetic coloring-triangular lattice with a coplanar magnetic configuration in presence of a spin-orbit interaction. The effect of the spin-orbit coupling is included at effective level as a rotation of the electronic spin as the electrons hop from site to site. Our result reveals that a finite Hall conductivity in the planar 120$^{\circ}$ structure takes place if a finite spin-orbit coupling is present. A quantized Hall conductivity occurs at global band gaps resulting from the topologically non-trivial band structure.
The $1/4$-filled organic compound, $δ$-(EDT-TTF-CONMe$_{2}$)$_{2}$AsF$_6$ is a frustrated two-dimensional triangular magnetic system as shown by high-frequency (111.2 and 222.4 GHz) electron spin resonance (ESR) and structural data in the literature. The material gradually orders antiferromagnetically below 40~K but some magnetically disordered domains persist down to 4 K. We propose that in defect free regions frustration prevents true magnetic order down to at least 4 K in spite of the large first- and second-neighbor exchange interactions along chains and between chains, respectively. The a…
Non-collinear triangular antiferromagnets with a coplanar spin arrangement and vanishing net magnetic moment can exhibit a large anomalous Hall effect owing to their non-vanishing momentum space Berry curvature. Here we show the existence of a large field induced topological Hall effect in the non-coplanar triangular antiferromagnetic geometry of Mn3Sn. A detailed magnetic and Hall effect measurements demonstrate the presence of three distinct Hall contributions; a high temperature anomalous Hall effect, a low temperature topological Hall effect and an intermediate temperature region with coex…
We study the recently reported characteristic gapless charge ordered state in a spinless fermion system on a triangular lattice under strong inter-site Coulomb interactions. In this state the charges are spontaneously divided into solid and liquid component, and the former solid part aligns in a Wigner crystal manner while the latter moves among them like a pinball. We show that such charge ordered liquid is stable over a wide range of filling, $1/3<n<2/3$, and examine its filling dependent nature.
The spin-1/2 stacked triangular antiferromagnet CsCu$_{1-x}$Co$_x$Cl$_3$ with $0.015<x<0.032$ undergoes two phase transitions at zero field. The low-temperature phase is produced by the small amount of Co$^{2+}$ doping. In order to investigate the magnetic structures of the two ordered phases, the neutron elastic scattering experiments have been carried out for the sample with $x\approx 0.03$. It is found that the intermediate phase is identical to the ordered phase of CsCuCl$_3$, and that the low-temperature phase is an oblique triangular antiferromagnetic phase in which the spins form a tria…
We extend the nonlinear spin wave theory (NLSWT) for the spin 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice (TAFHM). This novel NLSWT considers the corrections one order higher in 1/S than the linear spin wave theory (LSWT). It also distinguishes in which circumstance the negative energy excitation, the sign of the breakdown of LSWT, shall be renormalized to be positive both by a boson normal ordering and a self-consistent iteration. We draw a phase diagram by testing the stability of various magnetic orders for different parameters. In particular, the incommensurate configura…
A molecular Mott insulator $κ$-(ET)$_2$B(CN)$_4$ [ET = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene] with a distorted triangular lattice exhibits a quantum disordered state with gapped spin excitation in the ground state. $^{13}$C nuclear magnetic resonance, magnetization, and magnetic torque measurements reveal that magnetic field suppresses valence bond order and induces long-range magnetic order above a critical field $\sim 8$ T. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ shows persistent evolution of antiferromagnetic correlation above the transition temperature, highlighting a quantum spin…
The frustrated classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interactions on the triangular lattice is studied under a magnetic field by means of semiclassical calculations and large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that even a small DM interaction induces the formation of an Antiferromagnetic Skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) state. Unlike what is observed in ferromagnetic materials, we show that the AF-SkX state consists of three interpenetrating Skyrmion crystals (one by sublattice), and most importantly, the AF-SkX state seems to survive in the limit of zero te…
Motivated by the importance of antiferromagnetic skyrmions as building blocks of next-generation data storage and processing devices, we report theoretical and computational analysis of a model for a spin-orbit coupled correlated magnet on a triangular lattice. We find that two distinct antiferromagnetic skyrmion crystal (AF-SkX) states can be stabilized at low temperatures in the presence of external magnetic field. The results are obtained via Monte Carlo simulations on an effective magnetic model derived from the microscopic electronic Hamiltonian consisting of Rashba spin-orbit coupling, a…
We study, on the basis of the general entangled-plaquette variational ansatz, the ground-state properties of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice. Our numerical estimates are in good agreement with available exact results and comparable, for large system sizes, to those computed via the best alternative numerical approaches, or by means of variational schemes based on specific (i.e., incorporating problem dependent terms) trial wave functions. The extrapolation to the thermodynamic limit of our results for lattices comprising up to N=324 spins yields an upp…
Very often the skyrmions form a triangular crystal in chiral magnets. Here we study the effect of itinerant electrons on the structure of skyrmion crystal (SkX) on triangular lattice using Kondo lattice model in the large coupling limit and treating the localized spins as classical vectors. To simulate the system, we employ hybrid Markov Chain Monte Carlo method (hMCMC) which includes electron diagonalization in each MCMC update for classical spins. We present the low temperature results for $12\times 12$ system at electron density $n=1/3$ which show a sudden jump in skyrmion number when we in…
We measured magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering of CrVMoO$_7$ powder. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 26.5 \pm 0.8$ K. We consider that the probable spin model for CrVMoO$_7$ is an interacting antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer model. We evaluated the intradimer interaction $J$ to be $25 \pm 1$ K and the effective interdimer interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ to be $8.8 \pm 1$ K. CrVMoO$_7$ is a rare spin dimer compound that shows an antiferromagnetically ordered state at atmospheric press…
In order to study effects of frustration in an itinerant electron system, we investigate ground states of the antiferromagnetic double-exchange model on a triangular lattice. In this model, pseudo-spins are coupled to electron transfer integrals in such a way that antiparallel configurations of pseudo-spins gain kinetic energies. Although the antiferromagnetic Ising model on a triangular lattice shows macroscopic dengenerate ground states, the present model shows that the degeneracy is lifted due to long-range natures of the double exchange interactions. Spin ordering at the ground state is al…
We report a detailed study of the magnetic properties of KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$, in which magnetic Gd$^{3+}$ ($S=7/2$) ions form into two-dimensional triangular layers. Magnetization, specific heat and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) measurements have been performed on KBaGd(BO$_3$)$_2$ single crystals. The results show that a long-range antiferromagnetic state is established below $T_{\rm N}=0.24$ K. In zero fields, only about half of the full entropy is released at $T_{\rm N}$, indicating that not all the magnetic moments are frozen below the ordering temperature, as expected from the geometrical fru…
The Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is a prime example for a geometrically frustrated spin system. However most experimentally accessible compounds have spatially anisotropic exchange interactions. As a function of this anisotropy, ground states with different magnetic properties can be realized. Motivated by recent experimental findings on Cs$_{2}$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_{x}$, we discuss the full phase diagram of the anisotropic model with two exchange constants $J_{1}$ and $J_{2}$, including possible ferromagnetic exchange. Furthermore a comparison with the related square lattice model is c…
We use Schwinger boson mean field theory to study the antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on an anisotropic triangular lattice in the presence of a uniform external magnetic field. We calculate the field dependence of the spin incommensurability in the ordered spin spiral phase, and compare the results to the recent experiments in Cs$_{2}$CuCl$_{4}$ by Coldea et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett. 86, 1335 (2001)).
Zero-field muon-spin relaxation measurements of the frustrated triangular quantum magnet AgNiO2 are consistent with a model of charge disproportionation that has been advanced to explain the structural and magnetic properties of this compound. Below an ordering temperature of T_N=19.9(2) K we observe six distinct muon precession frequencies, due to the magnetic order, which can be accounted for with a model describing the probable muon sites. The precession frequencies show an unusual temperature evolution which is suggestive of the separate evolution of two opposing magnetic sublattices.
Motivated by a recent experimental report on in-plane anisotropic resistivity in the double-striped antiferromagnetic phase of FeTe, we theoretically calculate in-plane resistivity by applying a memory function approach to the ordered phase. We find that the resistivity is larger along an antiferromagnetically ordered direction than along a ferromagnetically ordered one, consistent with experimental observation. The anisotropic results are mainly contributed from Drude weight, whose behavior is attributed to Fermi surface topology of the ordered phase.
We consider the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg and the repulsive Hubbard model on two $N$-site one-dimensional lattices, which support dispersionless one-particle states corresponding to localized states on triangular trapping cells. We calculate the degeneracy of the ground states in the subspaces with $n\le n_{\max}$, $n_{\max}\propto N$ magnons or electrons as well as the contribution of these states (independent localized states) to thermodynamic quantities. Moreover, we discuss another class of low-lying eigenstates (so-called interacting localized states) and calculate their contribution t…
We investigate the antiferromagnetically ordered state in the half-filled Hubbard model on the Socolar dodecagonal tiling. When the interaction is introduced, the staggered magnetizations suddenly appear, which results from the existence of the macroscopically degenerate states in the tightbinding model. The increase of the interaction strength monotonically increases the magnetizations although its magnitude depends on the local environments. Magnetization profile is discussed in the perpendicular space. The similarity and difference are also addressed in magnetic properties in the Hubbard mo…
We present a detailed investigation of the magnetic properties of the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ system Li$_2$Co(WO$_4$)$_2$ by means of magnetic susceptibility and specific heat. Our experimental results show that in Li$_2$Co(WO$_4$)$_2$ a short-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) correlations appear near $χ$$_{max}$ $\sim$ 11 K and two successive long-range AFM phase transitions are observed at T$_{N1}$$\sim$ 9 K and T$_{N2}$$\sim$ 7 K. The frustration factor, $\mid$$Θ$$\mid$/T$_{N1}$$\sim$3, indicates that the system is moderately frustrated, which is identifiable by the broken triangular symmetry within…
To check the reliability of the Majorana representation of quantum spin systems, we use it to compute the ground state energy of an antiferromagnetic spin 1/2 chain to one loop order. We find a very small one loop correction of the mean field energy and a discrepancy of >100% compared to the Bethe Ansatz result. We conclude that a careful handling of the gauge degrees of freedom of this representation is crucial to get correct results.
We investigate thermodynamic properties like specific heat $c_{V}$ and susceptibility $χ$ in anisotropic $J_1$-$J_2$ triangular quantum spin systems ($S=1/2$). As a universal tool we apply the finite temperature Lanczos method (FTLM) based on exact diagonalization of finite clusters with periodic boundary conditions. We use clusters up to $N=28$ sites where the thermodynamic limit behavior is already stably reproduced. As a reference we also present the full diagonalization of a small eight-site cluster. After introducing model and method we discuss our main results on $c_V(T)$ and $χ(T)$. We …
The spin Green's function of the antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a triangular lattice is calculated using Mori's projection operator technique. At T=0 the spin excitation spectrum is shown to have gaps at the wave vectors of the classical Neel ordering. This points to the absence of the antiferromagnetic long-range order in the ground state. The calculated spin correlation on the neighboring sites of the same sublattice is in good agreement with the value derived from exact diagonalization. The temperature dependencies of the spin correlations and the gaps are calculated.
We investigate the excitation spectrum of the triangular-lattice antiferromagnetic $XXZ$ model using series expansions and mean field Schwinger bosons approaches. The single-magnon spectrum computed with series expansions exhibits rotonic minima at the middle points of the edges of the Brillouin zone, for all values of the anisotropy parameter in the range $0\leq J^z/J\leq1$. Based on the good agreement with series expansions for the single-magnon spectrum, we compute the full dynamical magnetic structure factor within the mean field Schwinger boson approach to investigate the relevance of the…
Inspired by the recent theoretical suggestion that the random-bond $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular and the kagome lattices might exhibit a randomness-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior when the strength of the randomness exceeds a critical value, and that this "random-singlet state" might be relevant to the QSL behaviors experimentally observed in triangular organic salts $κ{\rm -(ET)_2 Cu_2 (CN)_3}$and ${\rm EtMe_3 Sb[Pd(dmit)_2]_2}$ and in kagome herbertsmithite ${\rm CuZn_3(OH)_6Cl_2}$, we further investigate the nature of the static and the dynamical sp…
We study the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model in a lattice that interpolates between the triangular and the kagome lattices. The exchange interaction along the bonds of the kagome lattice is J, and the one along the bonds connecting kagome and non-kagome sites is J', so that J'=J corresponds to the triangular limit and J'=0 to the kagome one. We use variational and exact diagonalization techniques. We analyze the behavior of the order parameter for the antiferromagnetic phase of the triangular lattice, the spin gap, and the structure of the spin excitations as functions of J'/J. Our results indicate …
We study the t-J-$V$ model beyond mean field level at finite doping on the triangular lattice. The Coulomb repulsion $V$ between nearest neighbors brings the system to a charge ordered state for $V$ larger than a critical value $V_c$. One-particle spectral properties as self-energy, spectral functions and the quasiparticle weight are studied near and far from the charge ordered phase. When the system approaches the charge ordered state, charge fluctuations become soft and they strongly influence the system leading to incoherent one-particle excitations. Possible implications for cobaltates are…
The effect of Jahn-Teller phonons on the magnetic and orbital structure of LaMnO$_3$ is investigated using a combination of relaxation and Monte Carlo techniques on three-dimensional clusters of MnO$_6$ octahedra. In the physically relevant region of parameter space for LaMnO$_3$, and after including small corrections due to tilting effects, the A-type antiferromagnetic and C-type orbital structures were stabilized, in agreement with experiments.

We have studied the Tb$_2$Sn$_2$O$_7$ frustrated magnet by neutron diffraction under isotropic pressure of 4.6 GPa, combined with uniaxial pressure of 0.3 GPa, in the temperature range 0.06 K$<$T$<$100 K. Magnetic order persists under pressure but the ordered spin ice structure stabilized at ambient pressure below 1.3 K partly transforms into an antiferromagnetic one. The long range ordered moment at 0.06 K is reduced under pressure, which is interpreted by a pressure induced enhancement of the spin liquid fluctuations. Above the ordering transition, short range spin correlations are affected …
We study the magnetization process of the spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a layered triangular lattice by means of a numerical cluster mean-field method with a scaling scheme (CMF+S). It has been known that antiferromagnetic spins on a two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattice with quantum fluctuations exhibit a one-third magnetization plateau in the magnetization curve under magnetic field. We demonstrate that the CMF+S quantitatively reproduces the magnetization curve including the stabilization of the plateau. {We also discuss the effects of a finite interlayer coupling, which …
Order-by-disorder and long-range interactions in the antiferromagnetic transverse-field Ising model on the triangular lattice -- A perturbative point of view
Motivated by recent experiments on the frustrated quantum magnetic compound YbMgGaO4, we study an effective spin model on triangular lattice taking into account the effects of the spin-orbit coupling. We determine the classical ground-state phase diagram of this model, which includes a 120 degree Neel and two collinear antiferromagnetic phases. In the vicinity of the phase boundary between the Neel and collinear phases, we identify three intermediate non-collinear antiferromagnetic phases. In each of them the magnetic moments are ordered at multiple incommensurate wave vector Q values. We furt…
We investigate the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with an additional scalar chirality term and show that a chiral spin liquid is stabilized in a sizeable region of the phase diagram. This topological phase is situated in between a coplanar $120^\circ$ Néel ordered and a non-coplanar tetrahedrally ordered phase. Furthermore we discuss the nature of the spin-disordered intermediate phase in the $J_1$-$J_2$ model. We compare the groundstates from Exact Diagonalization with a Dirac spin liquid wavefunction and propose a scenario where this wavefunction describes the quantum…
We report the single-crystal growth and the fundamental magnetic and thermodynamic properties of a rare-earth triangular lattice antiferromagnet CeCd$_3$As$_3$. In this rare-earth antiferromagnet, the Ce local moments form a perfect triangular lattice. Due to the spin-orbital-entangled nature of the Ce local moments, the compound exhibits extremely anisotropic antiferromagnetic couplings along the c direction and in the ab plane respectively. We show that CeCd$_3$As$_3$ represents a {\it rare} experimental realization of an antiferromagnetic Ising model on a two dimensional triangular lattice …
Effect of exchange anisotropy on the relaxation time of spin and vector chirality is studied for the antiferromagnetic classical Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice by using the nonequilibrium relaxation Monte Carlo method. We identify the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition and the chiral transition in a wide range of the anisotropy, even for very small anisotropy of $\sim$ 0.01%. As the anisotropy decreases, both the critical temperatures steeply decrease, while the BKT critical region becomes divergently wide. We elucidate a sharp "V shape" of the phase diagram around th…
The trigonal compound EuSn2As2 was recently discovered to host Dirac surface states within the bulk band gap and orders antiferromagnetically below the Neel temperature TN = 24 K. Here the magnetic ground state of single-crystal EuSn2As2 and the evolution of its properties versus temperature T and applied magnetic field H are reported. Included are zero-field single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurements versus T, magnetization M(H,T), magnetic susceptibility chi(H,T) = M(T)/H, heat capacity Cp(H,T), and electrical resistivity rho(H,T) measurements. The neutron-diffraction and chi(T) measure…
We investigate the metal-insulator transition in the half-filled Hubbard model on a two-dimensional triangular lattice using both the Kotliar-Ruckenstein slave-boson technique, and exact numerical diagonalization of finite clusters. Contrary to the case of the square lattice, where the perfect nesting of the Fermi surface leads to a metal-insulator transition at arbitrarily small values of U, always accompanied by antiferromagnetic ordering, on the triangular lattice, due to the lack of perfect nesting, the transition takes place at a finite value of U, and frustration induces a non-trivial co…
The anisotropic triangular lattice of the crednerite system Cu(Mn1-xCux)O2 is used as a basic model for studying the influence of spin disorder on the ground state properties of a two-dimensional frustrated antiferromagnet. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the undoped phase (x=0) undergoes a transition to antiferromagnetic long-range order that is stabilized by a frustration-relieving structural distortion. Small deviation from the stoichiometric composition alters the magnetoelastic characteristics and reduces the effective dimensionality of the magnetic lattice. Upon increasing the…
We show that the chirality of triangular antiferromagnetic clusters can be used as a qubit even if it is entirely decoupled from the total spin of the cluster. In particular, we estimate the orbital moment associated to the chirality, and we show that it can be large enough to allow a direct measurement of the chirality with a field perpendicular to the cluster. Consequences for molecular magnets are discussed, and an alternative implementation with Cu atoms on a surface is proposed, for which one- and two-qubit gates are worked out in detail. Decoherence effects are also discussed.
Motivated by the importance of non-collinear and non-coplanar magnetic phases in determining various electrical properties of magnetic materials, we investigate the phase diagrams of the extended Hubbard model on anisotropic triangular lattice. We make use of a mean-field scheme that treats collinear, non-collinear and non-coplanar phases on equal footing. In addition to the ferromagnetic and 120° antiferromagnetic phases, we find the four-sublattice flux, the 3Q non-coplanar and the non-collinear charge-ordered states to be stable at specific values of filling fraction $n$. Inter-site Coulomb…
We find that the Schwinger Boson mean field theory(SBMFT) supplemented with Gutzwiller projection provides an exceedingly accurate description for the ground state of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ triangular lattice antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model(spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ TLHAF). However, we find the SBMFT fails even qualitatively in the description of the dynamical behavior of the system. In particular, the SBMFT fails to predict the Goldstone mode in the magnetic ordered phase. We show that the coherent peak in the two-spinon continuum in the presence of spinon condensate should not be interpreted as …
Effect of the coupling to mobile carriers on the 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic state is investigated in a ferromagnetic Kondo lattice model on a frustrated triangular lattice. Using a variational calculation for various spin orderings up to a four-site unit cell, we identify the ground-state phase diagram with focusing on the lightly-doped region. We find that an electron doping from the band bottom immediately destabilizes a 120$^\circ$ coplanar antiferromagnetic order and induces a noncoplanar three-sublattice ordering accompanied by an intervening phase separation. This noncoplanar phase ha…
We study the classical antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions in a magnetic field. We focus in particular in the emergence of a composite spin crystal phase, dubbed antiferromagnetic skyrmion lattice, that was recently observed in [Phys. Rev. B 92, 214439 (2015)] for intermediate fields. This complex phase can be made up from three inter-penetrated skyrmion lattices, one for each sub-lattice of the original triangular one. Following these recent numerical results, in this paper we explicitly construct the low-energy effective action…
Magnetic phase transition under hydrostatic pressure in TlCu$_{0.988}$Mg$_{0.012}$Cl$_3$ was investigated by magnetization measurements. The parent compound TlCuCl$_3$ is a coupled spin dimer system, which undergoes a pressure-induced quantum phase transition from a gapped ground state to an antiferromagnetic state at $P_{\rm c} = 0.42$ kbar due to the shrinkage of the gap. At ambient pressure, the present doped system exhibits impurity-induced magnetic ordering at $T_{\rm N}=2.5$ K. With increasing pressure, $T_{\rm N}$ increases. This is because the effective exchange interaction $J_{\rm eff…
A brief review is provided of earlier work on the low temperature phases of $S=1$ kagome and triangular lattice antiferromagnets in which there is sufficiently strongly single-ion anisotropy $D$ that dominates over the antiferromagnetic exchange $J$.
A Hubbard model at half-filling on an anisotropic triangular lattice has been proposed as the minimal model to describe conducting layers of $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2X$ organic materials. The model interpolates between the square lattice and decoupled chains. The $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2X$ materials present many similarities with cuprates, such as the presence of unconventional metallic properties and the close proximity of superconducting and antiferromagnetic phases. As in the cuprates, spin fluctuations are expected to play a crucial role in the onset of superconductivity. We perform a weak-coupling renormali…
The antiferromagnetic (AF) compound MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ is suggested to be the first realization of an antiferromagnetic (AF) topological insulator. Here we report on inelastic neutron scattering studies of the magnetic interactions in MnBi$_{2}$Te$_{4}$ that possess ferromagnetic (FM) triangular layers with AF interlayer coupling. The spin waves display a large spin gap and pairwise exchange interactions within the triangular layer are frustrated due to large next-nearest neighbor AF exchange. The degree of frustration suggests proximity to a variety of magnetic phases, potentially including s…
The magnetic correlations in the charge- and orbital-ordered manganite La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(4) have been studied by elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. Out of the well-defined CE-type magnetic structure with the corresponding magnons a competition between CE-type and ferromagnetic fluctuations develops. Whereas ferromagnetic correlations are fully suppressed by the static CE-type order at low temperature, elastic and inelastic CE-type correlations disappear with the melting of the charge-orbital order at high temperature. In its charge-orbital disordered phase, La(0.5)Sr(1.5)MnO(…
We use Schwinger boson mean field theory (SBMFT) to study the ground state of the spin-$S$ triangular-lattice Heisenberg model with nearest ($J_1$) and next-nearest ($J_2$) neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions. Previous work on the $S=1/2$ model leads us to consider two spin liquid Ansätze, one symmetric and one nematic, which upon spinon condensation give magnetically ordered states with 120$^{\circ}$ order and collinear stripe order, respectively. The SBMFT contains the parameter $κ$, the expectation value of the number of bosons per site, which in the exact theory equals $2S$. For $κ=1$ …
We demonstrate a robust frustration-driven charge-order to superconductivity transition in the half-filled negative-U extended Hubbard model. Superconductivity extends over a broad region of the parameter space. We argue that the model provides the correct insight to understanding unconventional superconductivity in the organic charge-transfer solids and other quarter-filled systems.
We investigate the magnon-density waves proposed as the longitudinal excitations in triangular lattice antiferromagnets by including the cubic and quartic corrections in the large-s expansion. The longitudinal excitation spectra for the two-dimensional (2D) triangular antiferromagnetic model and quasi-one dimensional (quasi-1D) antiferromagnetic materials have been obtained for a general quantum spin number $s$. For the 2D triangular lattice model, we find a significant reduction (about 40 %) in the energy spectra at the zone boundaries due to both the cubic and quartic corrections. For the qu…

The thermodynamics of the antiferromagnetic ordering transition in NiO and the photoelectron spectra in the antiferromagnetic phase are studied by the Variational Cluster Approximation. Using realistic Racah parameters to describe the Coulomb interaction in the Ni 3d shell and a Slater-Koster parameter pds which is slightly (10%) increased over the band structure estimate the calculated Neel temperature is 481 Kelvin (experimental value: 523 Kelvin). The magnetic susceptibility above TN has Curie-Weiss form. A significant contribution to the stabilization of the antiferromagnetic phase comes f…
It is known that there is no phase transition down to zero temperature in the antiferromagnetic Ising model on spatially anisotropic triangular lattices, in which the exchange coupling of one direction is stronger than those of other two directions. In the model, the low-temperature physics is governed by domain-wall excitations (defects) residing on bonds of the strong-coupling direction. In this letter, we show that an additional small attractive interaction between defects (a ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction in the weak-coupling direction) leads to a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Th…
