We measured magnetization, specific heat, electron spin resonance, neutron diffraction, and inelastic neutron scattering of CrVMoO$_7$ powder. An antiferromagnetically ordered state appears below $T_{\rm N} = 26.5 \pm 0.8$ K. We consider that the probable spin model for CrVMoO$_7$ is an interacting antiferromagnetic spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ dimer model. We evaluated the intradimer interaction $J$ to be $25 \pm 1$ K and the effective interdimer interaction $J_{\rm eff}$ to be $8.8 \pm 1$ K. CrVMoO$_7$ is a rare spin dimer compound that shows an antiferromagnetically ordered state at atmospheric pressure and zero magnetic field. The magnitude of ordered moments is $0.73(2) μ_{\rm B}$. It is much smaller than a classical value $\sim 3 μ_{\rm B}$. Longitudinal-mode magnetic excitations may be observable in single crystalline CrVMoO$_7$.
We study the critical properties in cubic systems of antiferromagnetically coupled spin dimers near magnetic-field induced quantum phase transitions. The quantum critical points in the zero-temperature phase diagrams are determined from quantum Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore, scaling properties of the uniform magnetization and the staggered transverse magnetization across the quantum phase transition in magnetic fields are calculated. The critical exponents are derived from Ginzburg-Landau theory. We find excellent agreement between the quantum Monte Carlo simulations and the analytical …
In2VO5, containing magnetically frustrated zig-zag chains, shows a remarkable magnetic crossover at 120 K between paramagnetic states with positive (17 K) and negative (-70 K) Weiss temperatures. Magnetic moment and entropy data show that the V4+ S = 1/2 spins condense into S = 1 triplet dimers below the crossover. A further freezing of the antiferromagnetically coupled triplet dimers into a global singlet state is observed at 2.5 K, with no long range magnetic order down to 0.42 K and in fields up to 9 T. No structural V-V dimerization is observed by high-resolution X-ray diffraction down to …
Understanding the dynamics of interacting quantum spins has been one of the active areas of condensed matter physics research. Recently, extensive inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out in an interesting class of systems, Cr_2(W, Te, Mo)O_6. These systems consist of bilayers of Cr^{3+} spins (S=3/2) with strong antiferromagnetic inter-bilayer coupling (J) and tuneable intra-bilayer coupling (j) from ferro (for W and Mo) to antiferro (for Te). In the limit when J>|j|, the system reduces to weakly interacting quantum spin-3/2 dimers. In this paper we discuss the low-temp…
The quasi-two-dimensional Heisenberg spin $S=1/2$ dimer system bis(2-amino-5-fluoro-pyridinium) tetrachlorocuprate(II) is studied by means of inelastic neutron scattering, calorimetry and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. In the absence of an applied magnetic field we find dispersive triplet excitations with a spin gap of $Δ=1.112(15)$ meV and a bandwidth of $0.715(15)$ meV within the layers and $0.116(15)$ meV between the layers, respectively. In an applied magnetic field of $μ_0H_c\approx 8.5$ T the spin gap is closed and we find a field induced antiferromagnetically ordered phas…
We explore several classes of quadrupolar ordering in a system of antiferromagnetically coupled quantum spin-1 dimers, which are stacked in the triangular lattice geometry forming a bilayer. Low-energy properties of this model is described by an $\mathcal{S}=1$ hard-core bosonic degrees of freedom defined on each dimer-bond, where the singlet and triplet states of the dimerized spins are interpreted as the vacuum and the occupancy of boson, respectively. The number of bosons per dimer and the magnetic and density fluctuations of bosons are controlled by the inter-dimer Heisenberg interactions.…
Heat capacity and susceptibility measurements have been performed on the diluted spin dimer compound Ba3(Mn1-xVx)2O8. The parent compound Ba3Mn2O8 is a spin dimer system based on pairs of antiferromagnetically coupled S = 1, 3d2 Mn5+ ions such that the zero field groundstate is a product of singlets. Substitution of non-magnetic S = 0, 3d0 V5+ ions leads to an interacting network of unpaired Mn moments, the low temperature properties of which are explored in the limit of small concentrations, 0<x<0.05. The zero-field heat capacity of this diluted system reveals a progressive removal of magneti…
A ferrimagnetic spin model composed of $S=1/2$ spin-dimers and $S=5/2$ spin-chains is studied by combining the bond-operator representation (for $S=1/2$ spin-dimers) and Holstein-Primakoff transformation (for $S=5/2$ spins). A finite interaction $J_{\rm DF}$ between the spin-dimer and the spin chain makes the spin chains ordered antiferromagnetically and the spin dimers polarized. The effective interaction between the spin chains, mediated by the spin dimers, is calculated up to the third order. The staggered magnetization in the spin dimer is shown proportional to $J_{\rm DF}$. It presents an…
The spin dynamics of a quasi one dimensional $S=1$ bond alternating spin-gap antiferromagnet Ni(C$_9$H$_{24}$N$_4$)NO$_2$(ClO$_4$) (abbreviated as NTENP) is studied by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) technique. Five modes of ESR transitions are observed and identified: transitions between singlet ground state and excited triplet states, three modes of transitions between spin sublevels of collective triplet states and antiferromagnetic resonance absorption in the field-induced antiferromagnetically ordered phase. Singlet-triplet and intra-triplet modes demonstrate a doublet structure wh…
KCuCl$_3$ is known to show a quantum phase transition from the disordered to antiferromagnetically ordered phases by applying pressure. There is a longitudinal excitation mode (Higgs amplitude mode) in the vicinity of the quantum critical point in the ordered phase. To detect the Higgs amplitude mode, high-pressure ESR measurements are performed in KCuCl$_3$. The experimental data are analyzed by the extended spin-wave theory on the basis of the vector spin chirality. We report the first ESR detection of the Higgs amplitude mode and the important role of the electric dipole described by the ve…
The dimerized S=1/2 spins of the Cu ions in TlCuCl3 are ordered antiferromagnetically in the presence of a field larger than about 54 kOe in the zero-temperature limit. Within the mean-field approximation all thermal effects are frozen out below 6 K. Nevertheless, experiments show significant changes of the critical field and the magnetization below this temperature, which reflect the presence of low-energetic dimer-spin excitations. We calculate the dimer-spin correlation functions within a self-consistent random-phase approximation, using as input the effective exchange coupling parameters o…
The magnetic coupling between single Co atoms adsorbed on a copper surface is determined by probing the Kondo resonance using low-temperature scanning tunneling spectroscopy. The Kondo resonance, which is due to magnetic correlation effects between the spin of a magnetic adatom and the conduction electrons of the substrate, is modified in a characteristic way by the coupling of the neighbouring adatom spins. Increasing the interatomic distance of a Cobalt dimer from 2.56A to 8.1A we follow the oscillatory transition from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic coupling. Adding a third atom to the a…
Magnetism of the spin-$\frac12$ $α$-KVOPO$_4$ is studied by thermodynamic measurements, $^{31}$P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), neutron diffraction, and density-functional band-structure calculations. Ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq 15.9$ K and the saturation field of $μ_0H_s\simeq 11.3$ T suggest the predominant ferromagnetic coupling augmented by a weaker antiferromagnetic exchange that leads to a short-range order below 5 K and the long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{\rm N}\simeq 2.7$ K in zero field. Magnetic structure with the propagation vector $\ma…
We present measurements of the magnetic susceptibility $χ$ and the magnetization M of single crystals of metallic \ypp, where localized Yb moments lie on the geometrically frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL). Strong magnetic frustration is found in this quasi-two dimensional system, which orders antiferromagnetically (AF) at T$_{N}$=2.02 \emph{K} from a paramagnetic liquid of Yb-dimers, having a gap $Δ$=4.6 \emph{K} between the singlet ground state and the triplet excited states. Magnetic fields suppress the AF order, which vanishes at a 1.25 \emph{T} quantum critical point. The spin g…
The development of long-range ferromagnetic (FM) order in dilute magnetic topological insulators can induce dissipationless electronic surface transport via the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We measure the magnetic excitations in a prototypical magnetic topological crystalline insulator, Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te, using inelastic neutron scattering. Neutron diffraction and magnetization data indicate that our Sn$_{0.95}$Mn$_{0.05}$Te sample has no FM long-range order above a temperature of 2 K. However, we observe slow, collective FM fluctuations ($<$~70 $μ$eV), indicating proximity to FM orde…
Neutron diffraction measurements were carried out on single crystals and powders of Yb2Pt2Pb, where Yb moments form planes of orthogonal dimers in the frustrated Shastry-Sutherland Lattice (SSL). Yb2Pt2Pb orders antiferromagnetically at TN=2.07 K, and the magnetic structure determined from these measurements features the interleaving of two orthogonal sublattices into a 5*5*1 magnetic supercell that is based on stripes with moments perpendicular to the dimer bonds, which are along (110) and (-110). Magnetic fields applied along (110) or (-110) suppress the antiferromagnetic peaks from an indiv…
We study the spin ordering within the 3-leg ladders present in the oxyborate Fe(3)O(2)BO(3) consisting of localized classical spins interacting with conduction electrons (one electron per rung). We also consider the competition with antiferromagnetic superexchange interactions to determine the magnetic phase diagram. Beside a ferromagnetic phase we find (i) a phase with ferromagnetic rungs ordered antiferromagnetically (ii) a zig-zag canted spin ordering along the legs. We also determine the induced charge ordering within the different phases and the interplay with lattice instability. Our mod…
We report a comprehensive study of the static susceptibility, high-field magnetization and high-frequency/high-magnetic field electron spin resonance (HF-ESR) spectroscopy of polycrystalline samples of the bismuth cobalt oxy-phosphate BiCoPO$_5$. This compound features a peculiar spin system that can be considered as antiferromagnetic (AFM) chains built of pairs of ferromagnetically coupled Co spins and interconnected in all three spatial directions. It was previously shown that BiCoPO$_5$ orders antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N} \approx 10$ K and this order can be continuously suppressed by…
Measurements of the static magnetic susceptibility and of the nuclear magnetic resonance of multiwalled vanadium-oxide nanotubes are reported. In this nanoscale magnet the structural low-dimensionality and mixed valency of vanadium ions yield a complex temperature dependence of the static magnetization and the nuclear relaxation rates. Analysis of the different contributions to the magnetism allows to identify individual interlayer magnetic sites as well as strongly antiferromagnetically coupled vanadium spins (S = 1/2) in the double layers of the nanotube's wall. In particular, the data give …
The molecular dissociation energy has often been explained and discussed in terms of singlet bonds, formed by bounded pairs of valence electrons. In this work we use a highly correlated resonating valence bond ansatz, providing a consistent paradigm for the chemical bond, where spin fluctuations are shown to play a crucial role. Spin fluctuations are known to be important in magnetic systems and correspond to the zero point motion of the spin waves emerging from a magnetic broken symmetry state. Recently, in order to explain the excitation spectrum of the carbon dimer, an unusual quadruple bon…
We report on the magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy (MAE) and spin reorientation in antiferromagnetic state of spin $S=1/2$ tetramer system SeCuO$_3$ observed in torque magnetometry measurements in magnetic fields $H<5$~T and simulated using density functional calculations. We employ simple phenomenological model of spin reorientation in finite magnetic field to describe our experimental torque data. Our results strongly support collinear model for magnetic structure in zero field with possibility of only very weak canting. Torque measurements also indicate that, contrary to what is expected…
Macroscopic assemblies of interacting spins give rise to a broad spectrum of behaviors determined by the spatial arrangement of the magnetic sites and the electronic interactions between them. Compounds of copper (II), in which each copper carries spin $\frac{1}{2}$, exhibit a vast variety of physical properties. For antiferromagnetically coupled spin sites, there are two limiting scenarios: spin chains in which the spins can exhibit a long-range order or a mixture of dimers in which the spins within each pair are entangled but do not communicate with the spins from other dimers. In principle,…
We perform magnetic susceptibility and magnetic torque measurements on the organic $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Hg(SCN)$_2$Br, which is recently suggested to host an exotic quantum dipole-liquid in its low-temperature insulating phase. Below the metal-insulator transition temperature, the magnetic susceptibility follows a Curie-Weiss law with a positive Curie-Weiss temperature, and a particular $M\propto \sqrt{H}$ curve is observed. The emergent ferromagnetically interacting spins amount to about 1/6 of the full spin moment of localized charges. Taking account of the possible inhomogeneous quasi-charge-o…
We studied the magnetic properties, in particular dynamics, of the correlated spins associated with natural defects in the organic spin chain compounds ($o$-DMTTF)$_2X$ ($X$ = Br, Cl) by means of electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy. Both materials exhibit spin-Peierls transitions at temperatures around 50 K [P. Foury-Leylekian et al. Phys. Rev. B 84, 195134 (2011)], which allow a separation of the properties of defects inside the chains from the magnetic response of the spin chains. Indeed, continuous wave ESR measurements performed over a wide temperature range evidence the evolution o…
We carried out AC magnetic susceptibility measurements and muon spin relaxation spectroscopy on the cubic double perovskite Ba2YMoO6, down to 50 mK. Below ~1 K the muon relaxation is typical of a magnetic insulator with a spin-liquid type ground state, i.e. without broken symmetries or frozen moments. However, the AC susceptibility revealed a dilute-spin-glass like transition below ~ 1 K. Antiferromagnetically coupled Mo5+ 4d1 electrons in triply degenerate t2g orbitals are in this material arranged in a geometrically frustrated fcc lattice. Bulk magnetic susceptibility data has previously bee…
In order to investigate the spin state of azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, we have measured the thermal conductivity along the c-axis, $κ$c, perpendicular to the spin diamond-chains. It has been found that the temperature dependence of $κ$c shows a broad peak at ~ 100 K, which is explained as being due to the strong phonon-scattering by the strong spin-fluctuation owing to the spin frustration at low temperatures below ~ 100 K. Furthermore, it has been found that the temperature dependence of $κ$c shows another peak at low temperatures below 20 K and that $κ$c is suppressed by the application of magne…
We use a combination of density matrix renormalization group calculations and analytical approaches to study a simplified model for a spatially anisotropic spin-1/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet: the three-leg triangular spin tube (TST). The model is described by three Heisenberg chains, with exchange constant J, coupled antiferromagnetically with exchange constant J' along the diagonals of the ladder system, with periodic boundary conditions in the shorter direction. We determine the full phase diagram of this model as a function of spatial anisotropy, J'/J, and magnetic field…
