The thermodynamics of the antiferromagnetic ordering transition in NiO and the photoelectron spectra in the antiferromagnetic phase are studied by the Variational Cluster Approximation. Using realistic Racah parameters to describe the Coulomb interaction in the Ni 3d shell and a Slater-Koster parameter pds which is slightly (10%) increased over the band structure estimate the calculated Neel temperature is 481 Kelvin (experimental value: 523 Kelvin). The magnetic susceptibility above TN has Curie-Weiss form. A significant contribution to the stabilization of the antiferromagnetic phase comes from electron hopping between oxygen which would be missed in theories that consider superexchange along a single bond only. The single particle spectral function in the ordered phase is in good agreement with experiment, in particular a number of dispersionless bands which are not reproduced by most calculations are obtained correctly. These flat bands are shown to be direct experimental evidence for a dispersionless electronic self-energy with several poles in the energy range of the valence band which originate from the multiplets of the Ni3+ ion. Small but possibly experimentally detectable changes of the photoelectron spectra with temperature are discussed, in p articular a widening of the insulating gap in the paramagnetic phase by approximately 10% is predicted.
We report evidence that the experimentally observed small deformation of antiferromagnetic NiO modifies the symmetry of the crystal in such a way that the antiferromagnetic state becomes an eigenstate of the electronic Hamiltonian. This deformation closely resembles a rhombohedral contraction, but does not possess the perfect symmetry of a trigonal (rhombohedral) space group. We determine the monoclinic base-centered magnetic space group of the antiferromagnetic structure within the deformed crystal which is strongly influenced by the time-inversion symmetry of the Hamiltonian. The antiferroma…
This letter extends my recent paper on antiferromagnetic NiO [Structural Distortion Stabilizing the Antiferromagnetic and Insulating Ground State of NiO, Symmetry 2020, 12(1), 56] by including also the paramagnetic phase of this compound. I report evidence that paramagnetic NiO possesses a narrow, roughly half-filled energy band that produces a nonadiabatic atomic-like motion providing the basis for a Mott insulator in the paramagnetic phase. While the atomic-like motion operating in the antiferromagnetic phase is adapted to the symmetry of the antiferromagnetic state, in the paramagnetic phas…
LDA+DMFT method in the framework of the iterative perturbation theory (IPT) with full LDA Hamiltonian without mapping onto the effective Wannier orbitals. We then apply this LDA+DMFT method to ferromagnetic bcc-Fe and fcc-Ni as a test of transition metal, and to antiferromagnetic NiO as an example of transition metal oxide. In Fe and Ni, the width of occupied 3d bands is narrower than those in LDA and Ni 6eV satellite appears. In NiO, the resultant electronic structure is of charge-transfer insulator type and the band gap is 4.3eV. These results are in good agreement with the experimental XPS.…
Coherent spin oscillations were non-thermally induced by circularly polarized pulses in fully compensated antiferromagnetic NiO. This effect is attributed to an entirely new mechanism of the action, on the spins, of the effective magnetic field generated by an inverse Faraday effect. The novelty of this mechanism is that spin oscillations are driven by the time derivative of the effective magnetic field acting even on "pure" antiferromagnets with zero net magnetic moment in the ground state. The measured frequencies (1.07 THz and 140 GHz) of the spin oscillations correspond to the out-of-plane…
Wide-band-gap insulators such as NiO offer the exciting prospect of coherently manipulating electronic correlations with strong optical fields. Contrary to metals where rapid dephasing of optical excitation via electronic processes occurs, the sub-gap excitation in charge-transfer insulators has been shown to couple to low-energy bosonic excitations. However, it is currently unknown if the bosonic dressing field is composed of phonons or magnons. Here we use the prototypical charge-transfer insulator NiO to demonstrate that 1.5 eV sub-gap optical excitation leads to a renormalised NiO band-gap…
At low temperature the holes doped into the NiO(2) planes of La(2)NiO(4.133) by the excess oxygen collect in diagonal stripes that separate narrow antiferromagnetic domains. The magnetic order drops abruptly to zero at T_m = 110.5 K, but charge order remains with a period of 3a/2. We show that application of a magnetic field in the regime T > T_m induces staggered magnetic order of period 3a due to the net magnetic moment of the high-temperature bond-centered stripes, together with the odd number of Ni spins across an antiferromagnetic domain.
In this paper I report evidence that the antiferromagnetic and insulating ground state of MnO is caused by a nonadiabatic atomic-like motion as it is evidently the case in NiO. In addition, I show that the experimental findings of Goodwin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. (2006), 96,~047209] corroborate my suggestion that the rhombohedral-like distortion in antiferromagnetic MnO as well as in antiferromagnetic NiO is an inner distortion of the monoclinic base-centered Bravais lattice of the antiferromagnetic phases.
Despite the recent discovery of superconductivity in Nd$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$NiO$_2$ thin films, the absence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism in their bulk materials remain a puzzle. Here we report the $^{1}$H NMR measurements on powdered Nd$_{0.85}$Sr$_{0.15}$NiO$_2$ samples by taking advantage of the enriched proton concentration after hydrogen annealing. We find a large full width at half maximum of the spectrum, which keeps increasing with decreasing the temperature and exhibits an upturn behavior at low temperatures. The spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/^{1}T_1$ is strongly enhanced w…
Neutron diffraction has been used to investigate antiferromagnetism since 1949. Here we show that antiferromagnetic reflections can also be seen in transmission electron diffraction patterns from NiO. The diffraction patterns taken here came from regions as small as 10.5 nm and such patterns could be used to form an image of the antiferromagnetic structure with a nanometre resolution.
Charge excitations across an electronic band gap play an important role in opto-electronics and light harvesting. In contrast to conventional semiconductors, studies of above-band-gap photoexcitations in strongly correlated materials are still in their infancy. Here we reveal the ultrafast dynamics controlled by Hund's physics in strongly correlated photo-excited NiO. By combining time-resolved two-photon photoemission experiments with state-of-the-art numerical calculations, an ultrafast ($\lesssim$ 10\,fs) relaxation due to Hund excitations and related photo-induced in-gap states are identif…
We investigate the spin-current transport through antiferromagnetic insulator (AFMI) by means of the spin-Hall magnetoressitance (SMR) over a wide temperature range in Pt/NiO/Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (Pt/NiO/YIG) heterostructures. By inserting the AFMI NiO layer, the SMR dramatically decreases by decreasing the temperature down to the antiferromagnetically ordered state of NiO, which implies that the AFM order prevents rather than promotes the spin-current transport. On the other hand, the magnetic proximity effect (MPE) on induced Pt moments by YIG, which entangles with the spin-Hall effect (SHE) …
The absence of sharp structures in the core-valence-valence Auger line shapes of partially filled bands has severely limited the use of electron spectroscopy in magnetic crystals and other correlated materials. Here by a novel interplay of experimental and theoretical techniques we achieve a combined understanding of the Photoelectron, Auger %$M_{23}M_{45}M_{45}$ and Auger-Photoelectron Coincidence Spectra (APECS) of CoO. This is a prototype antiferromagnetic material in which the recently discovered Dichroic Effect in Angle Resolved (DEAR) APECS reveals a complex pattern in the strongly corre…
For La_(1 2/3)Sr_(1/3)NiO_4 -- a commensurately doped Mott-Hubbard system -- charge- and spin-ordering in a stripe phase has been investigated by phononic and magnetic Raman scattering. Formation of a superlattice and an opening of a pseudo-gap in the electron-hole excitation spectra as well as two types of double-spin excitations -- within the antiferromagnetic domain and across the domain wall -- are observed below the charge-ordering transition. The temperature dependence suggests that the spin ordering is driven by charge ordering and that fluctuating stripes persist above the ordering tra…
In spite of extensive studies on NiO and their accomplishments, the rich physics still raises unsolved physical problems. In particular, the nature of the two-peak structure in the valence band photoemission spectra is still controversial. By using \textit{ab initio} LQSGW+DMFT, the two-peak structure is shown to be driven by the concerted effect of antiferromagnetic ordering and intersite electron hopping. Magnetic ordering in the Ni-$e_{g}$ orbitals splits majority- and minority-spin Ni-$t_{2g}$ levels due to local Hund's coupling. Strong hybridization between O-$p$ and Ni-$e_g$, a signature…
We have detected strong dichroism in the Ni $L_{2,3}$ x-ray absorption spectra of monolayer NiO films. The dichroic signal appears to be very similar to the magnetic linear dichroism observed for thicker antiferromagnetic NiO films. A detailed experimental and theoretical analysis reveals, however, that the dichroism is caused by crystal field effects in the monolayer films, which is a non trivial effect because the high spin Ni $3d^{8}$ ground state is not split by low symmetry crystal fields. We present a practical experimental method for identifying the independent magnetic and crystal fiel…
The antiferromagnetic topological insulator has attracted lots of attention recently, as its intrinsic magnetism and topological property makes it a potential material to realize the quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE) at relative high temperature. Until now, only MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ is predicted and grown successfully. The other MB$_2$T$_4$-family materials predicted (MB$_2$T$_4$:M=transition-metal or rare-earth element, B=Bi or Sb, T=Te, Se, or S) with not only antiferromagnetic topological property but also rich and exotic topological quantum states and dynamically stable (or metastable) struct…
The (001) surface of NiO, an antiferromagnet at room temperature, was investigated under ultra-high vacuum conditions with frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). The antiferromagnetic coupling between ions leads to a spin superstructure on (001) surfaces. Exchange interaction between the probe of a force microscope and the NiO (001) surface should allow to image spin superstructures in real space. The surface was imaged with three different probing tips: nonmagnetic W tips, ferromagnetic Co tips and antiferromagnetic NiO tips - and atomic resolution was achieved with all three …
The electronic structure of the antiferromagnet uranium nitride (UN) has been studied by angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy using soft X-rays (hn=420-520 eV). Strongly dispersive bands with large contributions from the U 5f states were observed in ARPES spectra, and form Fermi surfaces. The band structure as well as the Fermi surfaces in the paramagnetic phase are well explained by the band-structure calculation treating all the U 5f electrons as being itinerant, suggesting that itinerant description of the U 5f states is appropriate for this compound. On the other hand, changes in the …
In this work, we report the pressure dependence of the effective Coulomb interaction parameters (Hubbard U) in paramagnetic NiO within the constrained random phase approximation (cRPA). We consider five different low energy models starting from the most expensive one that treats both Ni-d and O-p states as correlated orbitals (dp-dp model) to the smallest possible two-orbital model comprising the eg states only (eg-eg model). We find that in all the considered models, the bare interactions are not very sensitive to the compression. However the partially screened interaction parameters show an …
The electronic spectrum, energy gap and local magnetic moment of paramagnetic NiO are computed by using the local density approximation plus dynamical mean-field theory (LDA+DMFT). To this end the noninteracting Hamiltonian obtained within the local density approximation (LDA) is expressed in Wannier functions basis, with only the five anti-bonding bands with mainly Ni 3d character taken into account. Complementing it by local Coulomb interactions one arrives at a material-specific many-body Hamiltonian which is solved by DMFT together with quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) simulations. The large insu…
A GW approximation (GWA) method named U+GWA is proposed, where we can start GWA with more localized wave functions obtained by the local spin-density approximation (LSDA)+U method. Then GWA and U+GWA are applied to MnO, NiO, and V$_2$O$_3$ in antiferromagnetic phase. The band gaps and energy spectra show an excellent agreement with the experimentally observed results and are discussed in details. The calculated width of d-bands of V$_2$O$_3$ is much narrower than that of the observed one which may be a mixture of t$_{2g}^2$ multiplet and single electron t$_{2g}$ level. GWA or U+GWA does not wo…
Non-centrosymmetric EuTGe3 (T=Co, Ni, Rh, and Ir) possesses magnetic Eu2+ ions and antiferromagnetic ordering appears at low temperatures. Transition metal substitution leads to changes of the unit cell volume and of the magnetic ordering. However, the magnetic ordering temperature does not scale with the volume change and the Eu valence is expected to remain divalent. Here we study the bulk electronic structure of non-centrosymmetric EuTGe3 (T=Co, Ni, Rh, and Ir) by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The Eu 3d core level spectrum confirms the robust Eu2+ valence state against the transiti…
We investigate the magnetic resonant x-ray scattering spectra around the $K$ edge of Ni in antiferromagnetic NiO using an \textit{ab-initio} band-structure calculation based on the density-functional theory. By taking account of orbital polarization through the spin-orbit interaction, we reproduce well the spectra obtained experimentally, thus demonstrating the usefulness of the \textit{ab-initio} calculation. It is shown that the main-edge peak, which mainly comes from the dipolar ($1s \to 4p$) transition, is a direct reflection of the orbital polarization of the $4p$ states. It is clarified …
The nature of the magnetic transition of the half-filled triangular antiferromagnet Ag$_{2}$NiO$_2$ with $T_{\rm N}$=56K was studied with positive muon-spin-rotation and relaxation ($μ^+$SR) spectroscopy. Zero field $μ^+$SR measurements indicate the existence of a static internal magnetic field at temperatures below $T_{\rm N}$. Two components with slightly different precession frequencies and wide internal-field distributions suggest the formation of an incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below 56 K. This implies that the antifrerromagnetic interaction is predominant in the NiO$_2$ plane i…
Ordering process of stripe order in La{2-x}Sr{x}NiO{4} with x being around 1/3 was investigated by neutron diffraction experiments. When the stripe order is formed at high temperature, incommensurability εof the stripe order has a tendency to show the value close to 1/3 for the samples with x at both sides of 1/3. With decreasing temperature, however, εbecomes close to the value determined by the linear relation of ε= n_h, where n_h is a hole concentration. This variation of the εstrongly affects the character of the stripe order through the change of the carrier densities in stripes and antif…
We investigate charge distribution in the recently discovered high-$T_c$ superconductors, layered nickelates. With increasing value of charge-transfer energy we observe the expected crossover from the cuprate to the local triplet regime upon hole doping. We find that the $d-p$ Coulomb interaction $U_{dp}$ plays a role and makes Zhang-Rice singlets less favorable, while the amplitude of local triplets is enhanced. By investigating the effective two-band model with orbitals of $x^2-y^2$ and $s$ symmetries we show that antiferromagnetic interactions dominate for electron doping. The screened inte…
CeIrSn with a quasikagome Ce lattice in the hexagonal basal plane is a strongly valence fluctuating compound, as we confirm by hard x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and inelastic neutron scattering, with a high Kondo temperature of $T_{\mathrm{K}}\sim 480$\,K. We report a negative in-plane thermal expansion $α/T$ below 2\,K, which passes through a broad minimum near 0.75\,K. Volume and $a$-axis magnetostriction for $B \parallel a$ are markedly negative at low fields and change sign before a sharp metamagnetic anomaly at 6\,T. These behaviors are unexpected for Ce-based intermediate valence sys…
The so-called local density approximation plus the multi-orbital mean-field Hubbard model (LDA+U) has been implemented within the all-electron projector augmented-wave method (PAW), and then used to compute the insulating antiferromagnetic ground state of NiO and its optical properties. The electronic and optical properties have been investigated as a function of the Coulomb repulsion parameter U. We find that the value obtained from constrained LDA (U=8 eV) is not the best possible choice, whereas an intermediate value (U=5 eV) reproduces the experimental magnetic moment and optical propertie…
The electronic structures of UX$_3$ (X=Al, Ga, and In) were studied by photoelectron spectroscopy to understand the relationship between their electronic structures and magnetic properties. The band structures and Fermi surfaces of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ were revealed experimentally by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), and they were compared with the result of band-structure calculations. The topologies of the Fermi surfaces and the band structures of UAl$_3$ and UGa$_3$ were explained reasonably well by the calculation, although bands near the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm{F}$) were r…
We analyze the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the Ni $K$ edge in an antiferromagnetic insulator NiO by applying the theory developed by the present authors. It is based on the Keldysh Green's function formalism, and treats the core-hole potential in the intermediate state within the Born approximation. We calculate the single-particle energy bands within the Hartree-Fock approximation on the basis of the multi-orbital tight-binding model. Using these energy bands together with the $4p$ density of states from an ab initio band structure calculation, we calculate the RIXS …
We have investigated the temperature-dependent changes in the near-$E$$_F$ occupied and unoccupied states of Pr$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ which shows the presence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. The temperature-dependent changes in the charge and orbital degrees of freedom and associated changes in the Mn 3$d$ - O 2$p$ hybridization result in varied O 2$p$ contributions to the valence band. A quantitative estimate of the charge transfer energy ($E$$_{CT}$) shows a larger value compared to the earlier reported estimates. The charge localization causing the large $E$$_{CT}$ is di…
The layered van der Waals antiferromagnet MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ has been predicted to combine the band ordering of archetypical topological insulators such as Bi$_2$Te$_3$ with the magnetism of Mn, making this material a viable candidate for the realization of various magnetic topological states. We have systematically investigated the surface electronic structure of MnBi$_2$Te$_4$(0001) single crystals by use of spin- and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. In line with theoretical predictions, the results reveal a surface state in the bulk band gap and they provide evidence for t…
We present a theoretical study of the effect of electron-electron interactions and Sr doping on the electronic structure of infinite-layer (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ using the density functional+dynamical mean-field theory approach. In particular, we explore the impact of epitaxial compressive strain that experience (Nd,Sr)NiO$_2$ films on the electronic properties, magnetic correlations, and exchange couplings. Our results reveal the crucial importance of orbital-dependent correlation effects in the Ni $3d$ shell of Sr-doped NdNiO$_2$. Upon doping with Sr, it undergoes a Lifshitz transition which is acco…
We report an experimental and theoretical analysis of the sqrt(3)x sqrt(3)-R30 and 2x2 reconstructions on the NiO (111) surface combining transmission electron microscopy, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and reasonably accurate density functional calculations using the meta-GGA hybrid functional TPSSh. While the main focus here is on the surface structure, we also observe an unusual step morphology with terraces containing only even numbers of unit cells during annealing of the surfaces. The experimental data clearly shows that the surfaces contain significant coverage of hydroxyl terminatio…
The aim of the present paper is twofold. The first goal is to show that high resolution angle-resolved photoelectron spectra from cuprates indicate the presence of string-like excitations of the quasihole excitation in a quantum antiferromagnet. In order to compare with the experimental intensity plots, we calculate the spectral function of the t-J and the t-t'-t"-J models within the self-consistent Born approximation for widely accepted values of the parameters of these models. The main features of the high resolution photoelectron spectra are in general agreement with the results based on th…
We use first-principles calculations to find that in infinite-layer nickelates $R$NiO$_2$, the widely studied tetragonal $P4/mmm$ structure is only dynamically stable for early lanthanide elements $R$ = La-Sm. For late lanthanide elements $R$ = Eu-Lu, an imaginary phonon frequency appears at $A=(π,π,π)$ point. For those infinite-layer nickelates, condensation of this phonon mode into the $P4/mmm$ structure leads to a more energetically favorable $I4/mcm$ structure that is characterized by an out-of-phase rotation of "NiO$_4$ square". Special attention is given to two borderline cases: PmNiO$_2…
In heavy-fermion compounds, f electrons show both itinerant and localized behaviour depending on the external conditions, and the hybridization between localized f electrons and itinerant conduction bands gives rise to their exotic properties like heavy-fermions, magnetic orders and unconventional superconductivity. Duo to the risk of handling radioactive actinide materials, the direct experimental evidence of the band structure evolution across the localized-itinerant and magnetic transitions for 5f electrons is lacking. Here, by using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, we revealed th…
