The first heavy fermion superconductor CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ has not revealed all its striking mysteries yet. At high pressures, superconductivity is supposed to be mediated by valence fluctuations, in contrast to ambient pressure, where spin fluctuations most likely act as pairing glue. We have carried out a multiprobe (electric transport, thermopower, ac specific heat, Hall and Nernst effects) experiment up to $7 \text{GPa}$ on a high quality CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ single crystal. Reliable resistivity data reveal for the first time a scaling behavior close to the supposed valence transition, and allow to locate the critical end point at $4.5\pm0.2 \text{GPa}$ and a slightly negative temperature. In the same pressure region, remarkable features have also been detected in the other physical properties, acting as further signatures of the Ce valence crossover and the associated critical fluctuations.
We review the evidence supporting valence-fluctuation mediated superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 and CeCu2Ge2, where Tc reaches 2.4 K at high pressure. In these systems the valence and magnetic critical points, at p_V and p_c respectively, are well separated. Characteristic signatures associated with both phenomena are distinct. In contrast, the valence and spin fluctuation regions appear much closer in most Ce based compounds. Concerning d-transition metals, superconductivity in pure iron emerges in the pressure window 15-30 GPa with the onset of Tc up to almost 3 K. All relevant observations poi…
I study an Extended Periodic Anderson Model (EPAM) with non-local hybridisation, $V_{fc}$, and a coulomb interaction, $U_{fc}$, between localised $f$ electrons and wide band conduction ($c$) electrons. Within DMFT, a quantum phase transition (QPT) driven by soft $f$-valence fluctuations, accompanied by a discontinuous jump in the Fermi volume, is found as $V_{fc}$ is tuned across a critical value. Near the associated QCP, an unconventional superconductive instability, driven by these extended, singular valence fluctuations, naturally emerges. {\it All} these phenomena are representative of obs…
It has been proposed that there are two types of superconductivity in CeCu2Si2, mediated by spin fluctuations at ambient pressure, and by critical valence fluctuations around a charge instability at a pressure P_v \simeq 4.5 GPa. We present in detail some of the unusual features of this novel type of superconducting state, including the coexistence of superconductivity and huge residual resistivity of the order of the Ioffe-Regel limit, large and pressure dependent resistive transition widths in a single crystal measured under hydrostatic conditions, asymmetric pressure dependence of the speci…
Resistivity measurements were carried out up to 8 GPa on single crystal and polycrystalline samples of CeCu2Si2 from differing sources in the homogeneity range. The anisotropic response to current direction and small uniaxial stresses was explored, taking advantage of the quasi-hydrostatic environment of the Bridgman anvil cell. It was found that both the superconducting transition temperature Tc and the normal state properties are very sensitive to uniaxial stress, which leads to a shift of the valence instability pressure Pv and a small but significant change in Tc for different orientations…
Simultaneous resistivity and a.c.-specific heat measurements have been performed under pressure on single crystalline CeCu2Si2 to over 6 GPa in a hydrostatic helium pressure medium. A series of anomalies were observed around the pressure coinciding with a maximum in the superconducting critical temperature, $T_c^{max}$. These anomalies can be linked with an abrupt change of the Ce valence, and suggest a second quantum critical point at a pressure $P_v \simeq 4.5$ GPa, where critical valence fluctuations provide the superconducting pairing mechanism, as opposed to spin fluctuations at ambient p…
Ubiquity of unconventional phenomena observed in a series of heavy fermion metals is discussed on the basis of an idea of critical valence fluctuations. After surveying experimental aspects of these unconventional behaviors in prototypical compounds, CeCu_2(Si,Ge)_2, under pressure, we propose that sharp valence crossover phenomena are realized in CeCu_6, CeRhIn_5, and Ce(Ir,Rh)Si_3 by tuning the pressure and the magnetic field simultaneously, on the basis of previous results for an extended Anderson lattice model with the Coulomb repulsion U_fc between localized f-electron and itinerant condu…
CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ is an exemplary correlated electron metal that features two domes of unconventional superconductivity in its temperature-pressure phase diagram. The first dome surrounds an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, whereas the more exotic second dome may span the termination point of a line of $f$-electron valence transitions. This behavior has received intense interest, but what has been missing are ways to access the high pressure behavior under milder conditions. Here we study Si $\rightarrow$ P chemical substitution, which compresses the unit cell volume but simultaneously w…
Many cerium-based heavy fermion (HF) compounds have pressure-temperature phase diagrams in which a superconducting region extends far from a magnetic quantum critical point. In at least two compounds, CeCu2Si2 and CeCu2Ge2, an enhancement of the superconducting transition temperature was found to coincide with an abrupt valence change, with strong circumstantial evidence for pairing mediated by critical valence, or charge transfer, fluctuations. This pairing mechanism, and the valence instability, is a consequence of a f-c Coulomb repulsion term U_fc in the hamiltonian. While some non-supercon…
A very rich phase diagram has recently been found in CeCu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ from high pressure experiments where, in particular, a transition between an intermediate valence configuration and an integral valent heavy fermion state has been observed. We show that such a valence transition can be understood in the framework of the periodic Anderson model. In particular, our results show a breakdown of a mixed-valence state which is accompanied by a drastic change in the \textit{f} occupation in agreement with experiment. This valence transition can possibly be interpreted as a collapse of the large …
Low-temperature (T) heat-capacity measurements under hydrostatic pressure of up to p=2.1 GPa have been performed on single-crystalline CeCu2Si2. A broad superconducting (SC) region exists in the T-p phase diagram. In the low-pressure region antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations and in the high-pressure region valence fluctuations had previously been proposed to mediate Cooper pairing. We could identify these two distinct SC regions. We found different thermodynamic properties of the SC phase in both regions, supporting the proposal that different mechanisms might be implied in the formation of s…
We have investigated the proximity effect between a superconductor (Nb) and a 'Heavy Fermion' system (CeCu_6) by measuring critical temperatures $T_c$ and parallel critical fields H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T) of Nb films with varying thickness deposited on 75 nm thick films of CeCu_6, and comparing the results with the behavior of similar films deposited on the normal metal Cu. For Nb on CeCu_6 we find a strong decrease of T_c with decreasing Nb thickness and a finite critical thickness of the order of 10 nm. Also, dimensional crossovers in H_{c2}^{\parallel}(T) are completely absent, in strong contr…
The effects of Ni substitution on Ce(Cu1-xNix)2Si2 have been studied by specific heat and electrical resistivity measurements. The specific heat measurement has revealed that the enhanced quantum fluctuations around an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point are markedly suppressed by Ni substitution, and that the Fermi liquid state recovers in the Nirich region (x > 0.12). The characteristic T-linear dependence of the resistivity has been observed at approximately x ~ 0.10 together with a sign of superconductivity. The variation of n in the form of rho - rho0 = aT^n against Tmax^1, at which …
On the basis of the Ward-Pitaevskii identity, the residual resistivity $ρ_{0}$ is shown to exhibit huge enhancement around the quantum critical point of valence transition in Ce-based heavy electron systems. This explains a sharp peak of $ρ_{0}$ observed in CeCu$_2$Ge$_2$ under the pressure at $P\sim$16GPa where the superconducting trasition temperature also exhibit the sharp peak.
We report electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements of intermediate valence YbNi$_{3}$Ga$_{9}$ under pressure and magnetic field. We have revealed a characteristic pressure-induced Yb valence crossover within the temperature-pressure phase diagram, and a first-order metamagnetic transition is found below $P_{\rm c}$ $\sim$ 9 GPa where the system undergoes a pressure-induced antiferromagnetic transition. As a possible origin of the metamagnetic behavior, a critical valence fluctuation emerging near the critical point of the first-order val…
The tilted balance among competing interactions can yield a rich variety of ground states of quantum matter. In most Ce-based heavy fermion systems, this can often be qualitatively described by the famous Doniach phase diagram, owing to the competition between the Kondo screening and the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yoshida exchange interaction. Here, we report an unusual pressure-temperature phase diagram beyond the Doniach one in CeCuP2. At ambient pressure, CeCuP2 displays typical heavy-fermion behavior, albeit with a very low carrier density. With lowering temperature, it shows a crossover from …
We discuss ground-state projector simulations of a modified two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg model in the valence bonds basis. Tuning matrix elements corresponding to the diagonal and off-diagonal terms in the quantum dimer model, we show that there is a quantum phase transition from the antiferromagnet into a columnar valence-bond-solid (VBS). There are no signs of discontinuities, suggesting a continuous or very weakly first-order transition. The Z4-symmetric VBS order parameter exhibits an emergent U(1) symmetry as the phase transition is approached. We extract the associated length-scale g…
We investigate a two-orbital Anderson lattice model with Ising orbital intersite exchange interactions by means of dynamical mean field theory combined with the static mean field approximation of the intersite orbital interactions. Focusing on Ce-based heavy-fermion compounds, we examine the orbital crossover between the two orbital states, when the total f-electron number per site n_f is n_f ~ 1. We show that a "meta-orbital" transition, at which the occupancy of the two orbitals changes steeply, occurs when the hybridization between the ground-state f-electron orbital and conduction electron…
Despite almost 40 years of research, the origin of heavy-fermion superconductivity is still strongly debated. Especially, the pressure-induced enhancement of superconductivity in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ away from the magnetic breakdown is not sufficiently taken into consideration. As recently reported in CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ and several related compounds, optimal superconductivity occurs at the pressure of a valence crossover, which arises from a virtual critical end point at negative temperature $T_{\rm cr}$. In this context, we did a meticulous analysis of a vast set of top-quality high-pressure electrical…
We report Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements (RIXS) in YbCu$_2$Si$_2$ at the Yb L$_{3}$ edge under high pressure (up to 22 GPa) and at low temperatures (down to 7 K) with emphasis on the vicinity of the transition to a magnetic ordered state. We find a continuous valence change towards the trivalent state with increasing pressure but with a pronounced change of slope close to the critical pressure. Even at 22 GPa the Yb$^{+3}$ state is not fully achieved. The pressure where this feature is observed decreases as the temperature is reduced to 9 GPa at 7K, a value close to the criti…
We present results of magnetic susceptibility and thermal expansion measurements performed on high-quality single crystals of EuPd$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ for 0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2 and temperatures 2 K $\leq T \leq$ 300 K. Data were taken at ambient pressure and finite He-gas pressure $p$ $\leq$ 0.5 GPa. For x = 0 and ambient pressure we observe a pronounced valence-change crossover centred around $T'_V$ $\approx$ 160 K with a non-magnetic ground state. This valence-change crossover is characterized by an extraordinarily strong pressure dependence of d$T'_V$ /d$p$ = (80 $\pm 10)$ K/GPa. We o…
We report measurements of the physical properties and electronic structure of the hexagonal compounds Yb2Ni12Pn7 (Pn = P, As) by measuring the electrical resistivity, magnetization, specific heat and partial fluorescence yield x-ray absorption spectroscopy (PFY-XAS). These demonstrate a crossover upon reducing the unit cell volume, from an intermediate valence state in Yb2Ni12As7 to a heavy-fermion paramagnetic state in Yb2Ni12P7, where the Yb is nearly trivalent. Application of pressure to Yb2Ni12P7 suppresses T_FL, the temperature below which Fermi liquid behavior is recovered, suggesting th…
We study the extended Anderson model on the two-dimensional Penrose lattice, combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with the non-crossing approximation. It is found that the Coulomb repulsion between localized and conduction electrons does not induce a valence transition, but the crossover between the Kondo and mixed valence states in contrast to the conventional periodic system. In the mixed-valence region close to the crossover, nontrivial valence distributions appear characteristic of the Penrose lattice, demonstrating that the mixed-valence state coexists with local Kondo sta…
We present a detailed study of the temperature evolution of the crystal structure, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of single crystals of the paradigmatic valence-fluctuating compound EuIr$_2$Si$_2$. A comparison to stable-valent isostructural compounds EuCo$_2$Si$_2$ (with Eu$^{3+}$), and EuRh$_2$Si$_2$, (with Eu$^{2+}$) reveals an anomalously large thermal expansion indicative of the lattice softening associated to valence fluctuations. A marked broad peak at temperatures around 65-75 K is observed in specific heat, susceptibility and the derivative of resistivity, as t…
The intermediate valence compound YbAl$_3$ is known to undergo a hybridization process between itinerant and localized electrons. The resulting heavy Fermi liquid remains non-magnetic and non-superconducting. A microscopic understanding of the hybridization process in YbAl$_3$ is still lacking although some characteristic temperature and energy scales have been identified. Here we report results from novel spectroscopic measurements based on quasiparticle scattering. From the conductance spectra taken over a wide temperature range, we deduce that the band renormalization and hybridization proc…
Nearly magnetic metals often have layered lattice structures, consisting of coupled planes. In such a situation, physical properties will display, upon decreasing temperature or energy, a dimensional crossover from two-dimensional (2d) to three-dimensional (3d) behavior, which is particularly interesting near quantum criticality. Here we study this crossover in thermodynamics using a suitably generalized Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson approach to the critical behavior, combined with renormalization group techniques. We focus on two experimentally relevant cases: the crossover from a 2d to a 3d antifer…
We have investigated temperature-dependent behaviors of electronic structure and resistivity in a mixed-valent golden phase of SmS, based on the dynamical mean-field theory band structure calculations. Upon cooling, the coherent Sm 4$f$ bands are formed to produce the hybridization induced pseudogap near the Fermi level, and accordingly the topology of Fermi surface is changed to exhibit a Lifshitz-like transition. The surface states emerging in the bulk gap region are found to be not topologically protected states but just typical Rashba spin-polarized states, indicating that SmS is not a top…
Multiorbital systems away from global half-filling host intriguing physical properties promoted by Hund's coupling. Despite increasing awareness of this regime dubbed Hund's metal, effect of nonlocal interaction is still elusive. Here we study a three-orbital model with $1/3$ filling (two electrons per site) including the intersite Coulomb interaction ($V$). Using the $GW$ plus extended dynamical mean-field theory, the valence-skipping charge order transition is shown to be driven by $V$. Most interestingly, the instability to this transition is significantly enhanced in the spin-freezing cros…
A technique for measuring the electrical resistivity and absolute thermopower is presented for pressures up to 30 GPa, temperatures down to 25 mK and magnetic fields up to 10 T. With the examples of CeCu2Ge2 and CeCu2Si2 we focus on the interplay of normal phase and superconducting properties. With increasing pres- sure, the behaviour of CeCu2Ge2 evolves from that of an antiferromagnetically ordered Kondo system to that characteristic of an intermediate valence compound as the Kondo temperature increases by about two orders of magnitude. In the pressure window 8-10 < P < 20 GPa, a superconduct…
Temperature dependence of magnetization curves of well homogenized samples of Ce(Co$_{1-x}$Cu$_{x}$)$_5$ ($0\le x \le 0.7$), a family of representative $4f$-$3d$ intermetallic magnets found in rare-earth permanent magnets, is measured. A remarkable enhancement of intrinsic coercivity is observed with $x=0.3$ and $x=0.4$, persisting to higher temperatures. This experimental observation is theoretically attributed to an effect of electronic correlation among $4f$-electrons. That is, an intrinsic pinning happens originating in an anomalously enhanced magnetic anisotropy energy contributed by an o…
We have investigated the valence transition in the extended periodic Anderson model (EPAM) within the framework of dynamical mean field theory. Previous theoretical studies have indicated the presence of this transition in parameter ranges that are experimentally inaccessible. In this work, we show that, inclusion of dynamics beyond static mean-field brings the valence transition in physically relevant regimes. We show the strong dependence of the quasiparticle-weight scale across the sharp valence crossover. The density of states also exhibit concomitant large scale spectral weight transfers,…
We explore the spontaneous formation of an excitonic insulator state at the semimetal-semiconductor transition of mixed-valence materials in the framework of the spinless Falicov-Kimball model with direct $f$-$f$ electron hopping. Adapting the projector-based renormalization method, we obtain a set of renormalization differential equations for the extended Falicov-Kimball model parameters and finally derive analytical expressions for the order parameter, as well as for the renormalized $c$- and $f$-electron dispersions, momentum distributions, and wave-vector resolved single-particle spectral …
We examine the one-dimensional spinless Falicov-Kimball model extended by a hybridization potential between the localized and itinerant electron states. Below half-filling we find a crossover from a mixed-valence metal to an integer-valence phase separated state with increasing on-site Coulomb repulsion. This crossover regime is characterized by local competition between the strong- and weak-coupling behaviour, manifested by the formation of an electronic polaron liquid. We identify this intermediate-coupling regime as a charge-analogy of the Griffiths phase; a phase diagram is presented and d…
We measured the thermal expansion of the valence fluctuating phase of SmS (golden SmS) to construct a pressure vs temperature phase diagram. The obtained phase diagram is characterized by three lines. One is a crossover line that divides the paramagnetic phase into two regions. The other two lines correspond to a second-order Neel transition and a first-order Neel transition. The crossover line appears to emerge from a tricritical point that separates the first-order Neel transition from the second-order one. We argue that a valence jump occurs at the border of antiferromagnetism.
We compare the results of measurements of the magnetic susceptibility Chi(T), the linear coefficient of specific heat Gamma(T)=C(T)/T and 4f occupation number nf(T) for the intermediate valence compounds YbXCu4 (X = Ag, Cd, In, Mg, Tl, Zn) to the predictions of the Anderson impurity model, calculated in the non-crossing approximation (NCA). The crossover from the low temperature Fermi liquid state to the high temperature local moment state is substantially slower in the compounds than predicted by the NCA; this corresponds to the ''protracted screening'' recently predicted for the Anderson Lat…
Influence of quantum critical point (QCP) of first-order valence transition (FOVT) on Ce- and Yb-based heavy fermions is discussed as a key origin of anomalies such as non-Fermi liquid, metamagnetism, and unconventional superconductivity. Even in intermediate-valence materials, the QCP of the FOVT is shown to be induced by applying a magnetic field, which creates a new characteristic energy distinct from the Kondo temperature. It is stressed that the key concept is closeness to the QCP of the FOVT by pointing out that the proximity of the QCP explains sharp contrast between X=Ag and X=Cd in Yb…
Many heavy fermion materials are known to crossover from the Kondo lattice regime to the mixed-valent regime or vice-versa as a function of pressure or doping. We study this crossover theoretically by employing the periodic Anderson model within the framework of the dynamical mean field theory. Changes occurring in the dynamics and transport across this crossover are highlighted. As the valence is decreased (increased) relative to the Kondo lattice regime, the Kondo resonance broadens significantly, while the lower (upper) Hubbard band moves closer to the Fermi level. The resistivity develops …
We present a neutron scattering investigation of Ce1-xYxAl3 as a function of chemical pressure, which induces a transition from heavy-fermion behavior in CeAl3 (TK=5 K) to a mixed-valence state at x=0.5 (TK=150 K). The crossover can be modeled accurately on an absolute intensity scale by an increase in the k-f hybridization, Vkf, within the Anderson impurity model. Surprisingly, the principal effect of the increasing Vkf is not to broaden the low-energy components of the dynamic magnetic susceptibility but to transfer spectral weight to high energy.
We study the mechanism of the mass enhancement in an intermediate-valent regime of heavy-fermion materials. We find that the crossovers between the Kondo, intermediate valent, and almost empty f-electron regimes become sharp with the Coulomb interaction between the conduction and f electrons. In the intermediate-valent regime, we find a substantial mass enhancement, which is not expected in previous theories. Our theory may be relevant to the observed nonmonotonic variation in the effective mass under pressure in CeCu2Si2 and the mass enhancement in the intermediate-valent compounds alpha-YbAl…
Conventional and unconventional superconductivity, respectively, arise from attractive (electron-phonon) and repulsive (many-body Coulomb) interactions with fixed-sign and sign-reversal pairing symmetries. Although heavy-fermions, cuprates, and pnictides are widely believed to be unconventional superconductors, recent evidence in one of the heavy fermion superconductor (CeCu$_2$Si$_2$) indicate the presence of a novel conventional type pairing symmetry beyond the electron-phonon coupling. We present a new mechanism of attractive potential between electrons, mediated by emergent boson fields (v…
The localized-itinerant nature of Ce-4$f$ valence electrons in heavy fermion compound CeIn$_{3}$ under pressure is studied thoroughly by means of the combination of density functional theory and single-site dynamical mean-field theory. The detailed evolutions of electronic structures of CeIn$_{3}$, including total and partial density of states, momentum-resolved spectral functions, and valence state histograms etc., are calculated in a wide pressure range where the corresponding volume compression $V/V_0 \in [0.6,1.0]$ (here $V_0$ is the experimental crystal volume) at $T \cong 116$ K. Upon in…
The mechanism of the emergence of robust quantum criticality in the heavy-electron quasicrystal Yb15Al34Au51 is analyzed theoretically. By constructing a minimal model for the quasicrystal and its crystalline approximant, which contain concentric shell structures with Yb and Al-Au clusters, we show that a set of quantum critical points of the first-order valence transition of Yb appears as spots in the ground-state phase diagram. Their critical regions overlap each other, giving rise to a wide quantum critical region. This well explains the robust criticality observed in Yb15Al34Au51 under pre…
We perform a comprehensive theoretical study of the pressure-induced evolution of the electronic structure, magnetic state, and phase stability of the late transition metal monoxides MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO using a fully charge self-consistent DFT+dynamical mean-field theory method. Our results reveal that the pressure-induced Mott insulator-to-metal phase transition in MnO-NiO is accompanied by a simultaneous collapse of local magnetic moments and lattice volume, implying a complex interplay between chemical bonding and electronic correlations. We compute the pressure-induced evolution of rela…
We report the observation of a universal scaling of the Nernst coefficient over a wide intermediate temperature range in heavy fermion materials, including the superconductors CeCu$_2$Si$_2$, CeCoIn$_5$, and Ce$_2$PdIn$_8$, the ferromagnetic Kondo lattice Ce$_3$RhSi$_3$, the nonmagnetic CeRu$_2$Si$_2$, the intermediate valent YbAl$_3$, and the hidden order compound URu$_2$Si$_2$, that cover a broad spectrum of heavy fermion materials with different crystal, valence and ground state properties. The scaling formula follows exactly the magnetic susceptibility of emergent heavy quasiparticles as p…
The pressure-temperature-phase diagram of the new heavy-fermion superconductor CeAu$_2$Si$_2$ is markedly different from those studied previously. Indeed, superconductivity emerges, not on the verge, but deep inside the magnetic phase. In this context, we have carried out ac-calorimetry, resistivity and thermoelectric power measurements on a CeAu$_2$Si$_2$-single crystal under high-pressure. The principal novelties of this experiment are the observation of a new transition line, presumably a magnetic structure rearrangement at $T_{\mathrm{M}}^{\mathrm{mod}}$ inside the antiferromagnetic phase,…
We present the pressure-temperature phase diagram of the antiferromagnet CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ established via resistivity and calorimetry measurements under quasi-hydrostatic conditions up to 22.5~GPa. With increasing pressure, the Néel temperature [$T_{\mathrm{N}}(p=0)=8.6$~K] slowly increases up to $T_{\mathrm{N}}=13.4$~K at 9.4~GPa and then vanishes abruptly at the magnetic critical pressure $p_{\mathrm{c}}\sim13$~GPa. For the first time, heavy fermion superconductivity is observed in CeAg$_2$Si$_2$ . Superconductivity emerges at $\sim 11$~GPa and persists over roughly 10~GPa. Partial- and bulk-t…
The nature of the quantum valence transition is studied in the one-dimensional periodic Anderson model with Coulomb repulsion between f and conduction electrons by the density-matrix renormalization group method. It is found that the first-order valence transition emerges with the quantum critical point and the crossover from the Kondo to the mixed-valence states is strongly stabilized by quantum fluctuation and electron correlation. It is found that the superconducting correlation is developed in the Kondo regime near the sharp valence increase. The origin of the superconductivity is ascribed…
It has been known that the elemental Yb, a divalent metal at mbient pressure, becomes a mixed-valent metal under external pressure, with its valence reaching ~2.6 at 30 GPa. In this work, infrared spectroscopy has been used to probe the evolution of microscopic electronic states associated with the valence crossover in Yb at external pressures up to 18 GPa. The measured infrared reflectivity spectrum R(w) of Yb has shown large variations with pressure. In particular, R(w) develops a deep minimum in the mid-infrared, which shifts to lower energy with increasing pressure. The dip is attributed t…
We calculate the temperature dependence of the transport properties of heavy-fermion systems such as resistivity, optical conductivity, thermoelectric power, the electronic part of the thermal conductivity, and the "figure of merit." The one-particle properties of the periodic Anderson model are obtained within dynamical mean-field theory for the paramagnetic phase using Wilson's numerical renormalization group and the modified perturbation theory as impurity solvers. We discuss the dependence of the transport properties on the band filling, valence, and Coulomb correlation $U$. The typical ex…
We show theoretically that the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate (T_1T)^{-1} and the spin susceptibility exhibit divergent behaviors toward zero temperature at the quantum critical point (QCP) of the first-order valence transition. Remarkable enhancement in (T_1T)^{-1} and the spin susceptibility is induced by valence fluctuations even at the valence-crossover temperature far away from the QCP. This mechanism well explains peculiar behaviors observed recently in YbAuCu_4 and also gives a systematic explanation for YbXCu_4 for X=In, Au, Ag, Tl, and Pd from the viewpoint of the closeness to t…
The roles of critical valence fluctuations of Ce and Yb are discussed as a key origin of several anomalies observed in Ce- and Yb-based heavy fermion systems. Recent development of the theory has revealed that a magnetic field is an efficient control parameter to induce the critical end point of the first-order valence transition. Metamagnetism and non-Fermi liquid behavior caused by this mechanism are discussed by comparing favorably with CeIrIn5, YbAgCu4, and YbIr2Zn20. The interplay of the magnetic order and valence fluctuations offers a key concept for understanding Ce- and Yb-based system…
A normal metal exhibits a valence plasmon, which is a sound wave in its conduction electron density. The mysterious strange metal is characterized by non-Boltzmann transport and violates most fundamental Fermi liquid scaling laws. A fundamental question is: Do strange metals have plasmons? Using momentum-resolved inelastic electron scattering (M-EELS) we recently showed that, rather than a plasmon, optimally-doped Bi$_{2.1}$Sr$_{1.9}$Ca$_{1.0}$Cu$_{2.0}$O$_{8+x}$ (Bi-2212) exhibits a featureless, temperature-independent continuum with a power-law form over most energy and momentum scales [M. M…
The heavy fermion properties are reviewed on selected examples often studied in Grenoble. The physical problems are presented as example of exotic matter at low temperature with three major insights: the localisation of the 4f electrons, the collapse of the long range magnetic order and the entrance in an intermediate valence regime. The question on the first or second order nature of the quantum phase transition will be discussed. In the first example, the Ising Kondo lattice of CeRu2Si2, experiments seem to be described with the picture of 4f itinerant electron dominated by their spin fluctu…
A brief review on major advances in heavy fermion physics is presented including the Ce metal phase diagram, the huge effective mass detected in CeAl3, and the successive discoveries of unconventional superconductivity in CeCu2Si2 and three U based compounds, UBe13, UPt3 and URu2Si2. In order to track the origin of the huge effective mass, the case of intermediate valence compounds is discussed with emphasis of the differences between Yb and Ce materials. The formation of the effective mass is analyzed by two regular- and singular-part contributions. Examples are given for both, antiferromagne…
